This was our second visit. We ordered seaweed salad to start. It tasted old. We ordered the rainbow roll and iron man roll plus unagi nigiri sushi. The rainbow roll had very small pieces of tuna and salmon on it. The salmon tasted off! Rainbow roll was good. The unagi was terrible. It looked and tasted burnt. I think they put the unagi sauce on it then grilled it causing it to burn. I had to spit it out unfortunately. read more

It was oddly quiet on the evening that we went to Yamachen. The place is what you would expect from a 3.5 star sushi place but I'll give it a 4 given that the service was pretty solid. Great service and signature hospitality touches gives YamaChen's Sushi a special place in my heart. Looking to duck the crowd, Nye' and I arrived around 5p, half an hour after they reopen for dinner. We had the place to ourselves, a couple customers coming in and out to pick up their takeout orders. Our server who was also working the takeout orders came over with water and took our appetizer order. Nye' was pleasantly surprised by how good the shrimp tempura was. Well battered, light, airy and crisp. Just freakin' right. We both enjoyed the seaweed salad, and the house salad was a nice bed of fresh mixed greens with ginger dressing. We both ordered a couple rolls to follow. We chose to order sushi roll combos both favoring the Hawaii roll. They even included a small side of seaweed salad with your combo. During our meal we were served complimentary spring rolls, NICE. Overall we enjoyed Yamachen's. My only gripe being the excessive amount of rice used to make each roll. They were filling, maybe a bit too filling. Other than that, the food was fresh, service was friendly, and I greatly appreciated the complimentary mini cheesecake for dessert. My husband and I used to eat here every paycheck for over 2yrs. This year our money has been tight so we only order when we "splurge". The last few times, the food has really gone downhill. The rolls are bland, I can make better sushi rice at home, fish didn't taste fresh either! After our order last night, it's the last time we're going buying anything at YamaChen. I've been going to the yama locations for years but today togo meal was subpar. The wasabi tasted more like flour and peppermint and the miso soup was disgusting it was soo sour it was inedible. Salads used to come with atleast 1 tomato and a slice or 2 of cucumbers but was just lettuce today... the 2 rolls I got were ok and the sashimi app was descent. The best tasting thing was the free slice of cheesecake and even that I was worried about being sour. Definitely not worth 50 plus tip. read more

4.5 stars. This would be my go to sushi spot. We were given edamame and egg rolls as a free appetizer and a couple of yummy cheesecake bits to round out the meal. I wish the rice around the rolls was a bit thinner, but the meal filled us up! The Thai iced tea was delicious! We will be back! read more

First visit 9/23/2021 - Finally got to try this Yama location. They all seem to follow the same concept of giving some freebies which is really a pleasant surprise especially since Covid. Coming from a local whose never been to Japan, I would say the quality is between a sushi AYCE buffet and high-end local sushi establishment. Yama is a decent quick fix especially on a good day. Luckily, my first visit was good! We were given a cold plate of delicious edamame. We love edamame & wish it was served hot vs cold. Another Yama we went to also served it cold, but beggars can't be choosers. We ordered a roll each and two bowls of Miso. Miso wasn't bland & had a decent flavor. The two rolls were Iron Man and Earthquake. Iron Man has Shrimp tempura, crab meat, tuna, salmon (crab meat). Earthquake contains Spicy tuna, spicy salmon, real crab meat, avocado(tuna,salmon). Not sure that I tasted real crabmeat in either, but both rolls were delicious! I didn't overanalyze the filling because we were so hungry and enjoying. Rice was cooked & seasoned well. The sauce slightly overpowers, but that's part of Yama's appeal too. Yama's rolls are a good size with a balanced ratio of rice to filling. We love that they don't use a ton rice! I usually see mountains of rice left over on my daughter's plate, but not here! read more

I had no idea YamaChen's is a chain restaurant in Va, and it definitely does not feel like a chain restaurant. The rolls are excellent! My favorites are the Iron Man, Hawaiian, and Candy Cane. The service is excellent. There are two younger servers that are there most of the time, and they are both so sweet. The dishes are served with complimentary edamame, spring rolls, and a rotating desert. The bites are small but perfect compliments to a yummy sushi meal. 10/10 would recommend! Time flies! It's been awhile since my Yama review - so I figured I'd pop in with an update that things are still great! I'll admit that I've found a different sushi place that is my favorite in the entire 757. Unfortunately, it's a little bit of a drive. Yama is close to home so it's still my most visited sushi spot. It's perfect for takeout or delivery. My order is always correct. The selection is excellent. When I order a small feast they usually throw in something a little extra which is always a great treat. I haven't visited in person since COVID began, but I'm so pleased to see that other reviewers have been comfortable with their safety precautions and overall experience. I know I've been excited for sushi night every time I know it's coming from Yama. I look forward to dining in again soon! read more

YamaChen's was an amazing experience!! From the beginning, they gave my family edamame on the house which is so nice of them. Our waitress was very patient with my sister and I as we waited for the rest of our family. The restaurant was extremely clean, even the bathroom felt luxurious!! They also have custom plates and utensils packages that just let me know how seriously they care about their business and how much they care about their customer's experience. My whole family thoroughly enjoyed their food. They gave us way more than enough food which we love to see! I got the spicy fire chicken and it was AMAZING. I am craving it again as I type this review. At the end of our meal, our waitress gave us egg rolls on the house AGAIN! It just kept getting better and better. To top it all off, our to go boxes were the cutest little custom ordered YamaChen's to go boxes! They were the perfect size and could close tight enough for securing. Everything here is pretty on point - the food, the service, and the ambiance. I've been here a few times, and I will say that YamaChen probably is one of my favorite sushi lunch spots in the Kempsville/Princess Anne area. Also, with every visit, customers are rewarded with a small treat (eg spring roll, edamame, or some other yummy dish). From my few visits, I have not been disappointed with the freshness of sushi (very important if you are eating raw fish). Also, the roll sizes are pretty substantial, and the sushi chefs do not skimp on the protein. While minor (for me, at least), I think they do a splendid job with plating - sometimes, the food and the plating look like a work of art. read more

I went for a birthday party and we were seated in the back of the restaurant. It was basically a big booth and it was uncomfortable. If you sat in the middle section and needed to use the rest room, everyone had to get up to move out the way. Annoying. The restaurant was nicely decorated, the staff was very friendly and accommodating. The menu consisted of a lot of choices from sushi, to chicken dishes to noodles. I was able to try so many different types of sushi rolls since I was with a party. But the food took fooooreeever to come out!!!Like 1.5 hours later!! Come to find out one of the cooks called out so it was one cook in the kitchen covering the whole restaurant to include making the sushi rolls!! The rolls were good, not the best. I feel like all of the sushi places are starting to taste the same anyways... It's a nice restaurant and the chicken and noodle dishes I tried was good, so I wouldn't totally discount this place all together. read more

Review of my visit on April 1, 2022. I've eaten here a good amount of times and forgot to write up a review. Welcoming host; friendly and talented piano player. Been so long that I didn't recall someone playing a piano. Didn't have sushi this time. Ordered the teriyaki chicken, which was great! Just enough teriyaki sauce, on point and not overpowering. A side of white rice as well. Waitress was on top of things! Water always filled, and checked in as much as she could. Offered a couple free items to compliment the meal! Only complaint is there should be steamed broccoli with the type of meal I had. Parking shares other establishments. Lighted, appears safe. This is a jewel of restaurant! I love this place! I get takeout from here very regularly. I highly recommend their rolls; ingredients are always fresh and they take orders very quickly. They have some of the best eel rolls in the area. I recommend their special rolls as well. The staff is always very nice and accommodating. However, the size of these sushi were bigger than other sushi places we've been to. Now I can say they were reasonably priced. We only ordered 4 different rolls. We were getting full and struggled to finish the last roll. One thing tho, is they were missing the spicy part on a couple rolls that were suppose to be spicy. They were still delicious. Ordered takeout the other day. They had a sign on the door that said to Stay outside for to go orders? So I decided to call and let them know I was there to pickup, she told me to come in. They had a big desk/tablebetween the front door and the waitress. Great social distancing. They had hand sanitizer and a sign insisting we used it. I didn't have to touch anything but my card, bag of food & pen to sign my receipt. It was pretty much a no contact pickup. Perfect for the situation. But on to the food! Yama is one of my favorite sushi's spots. We ordered a few rolls, gyoza & the chicken yakisoba. They treated us with some edamame & a slice of cheesecake! Food is always on point each visit.
