They offer a sealed packet when you sit down. Inside was a packet with a thick napkin, a toothpick, and chopsticks. I tried the sake flight, which had 4 great flavors. Stopped into YamaChen's Sushi yesterday with my youngest && it did not disappoint! When we walked in around noon we were greeted by a friendly waitress who immediately sat us at a booth. The atmosphere was welcoming && the restaurant was obviously clean and well maintained. We were provided menus and a sealed "pouch" containing a napkin, chopsticks and a toothpick- I loved the idea. We started with an Avocado Salad for an appetizer and the waitress provided us some complimentary edamame. The avocado salad was the perfect balance && we both really enjoyed it. For main courses I opted for two rolls - Hawaii Roll and Crazy Volcano roll. Both were new for me and both were bursting with flavor. Freshly prepared and perfectly presented. My daughter opted for the Chicken Ramen which again, knocked it out of the park on the presentation. It was huge! Filled with veggies, chicken, imitation crab, plenty of noodles and a hard boiled egg. The portion was easily two meals and absolutely delicious. We did not have room for dessert, but they do offer it. We were highly impressed with the fantastic customer service, the speed at which we received our food and the overall flavor and quality of the food. The gyoza was good had traditional meat filling but also had cooked cabbage in there. The volcano roll was tasty. The iron man was good but was served warm which threw me off a bit. First I'd like to thank the staff and chef for a wonderful lunch today. Walking into a slice of Japan in Va Beach as you pass through a beautiful wooden pergola with accents of fresh blooming cherry blossoms was a great way to start. The host was very friendly and we enjoyed our appetizer of crisp edamame and crunchy golden spring rolls. The steamed dumplings were perfectly made and the filling was well seasoned. Volcano Roll, Shrimp Tempura, and California Roll were the entree. Perfectly balanced and executed with passion! The unexpected treat at the end was a delicious and pleasant surprise, of cheesecake bites. Came here on a Saturday afternoon for lunch. I was seated right away.....it wasn't busy. The waitress was nice but sadly only lunch specials Monday-Friday. She did bring me complimentary edamame. I ordered 2 rolls, The Iron Man and Spicy Tuna. I also ordered the gyoza because I had a free appetizer. Everything came out very quickly. I loved the sauce for my steamed Gyozas. My rolls came quickly and I loved the presentation with a fresh flower and even a small portion of seaweed salad. I didn't love the imitation crab on top. Even though I know it's imitation I would rather have it in a salad then huge chunks on top of my roll. I had to order more Wasabi because it was not very strong. I never had that clear your sinuses moment that you get from Wasabi. The waitress brought out a small complimentary cheesecake bite which was the perfect amount after a filling lunch. Came here for lunch today with two 11 year olds and we had the best time. We were seated right away and given some delightful complimentary edamame. We waited and waited, and watched another who walked in after us get waited on before us. The server finally came over and handed us (2 people), one menu and said we had to share it. Then walked away. Remember, the restaurant was not full, but they were out of menus. If I had to guess how many people were in the restaurant, I would say 20. I managed grab her attention to come take our order. I say to her "I thought you forgot about us". She then sighs as if she was exhausted, and says "yeah I'm the hostess/server/cashier/ and answering phones". I say to her that isn't right, and they need more help. She took our order and then we waited again. Then proceeded to watch the lady who walked in after us, get waited on and served before us. Eventually our food came, and it was amazing!!!! We ordered the Hawaii roll and shrimp tempura bento lunch box (ea). They both came out fresh and piping hot. They even brought out a complimentary "candy cane" roll. The food was amazingly delicious. This isn't my first time here, so I knew it would be. I just was so blown away at how crappy the service was, and how dirty the entire floor was, that I couldn't rate more than a 3. They turned us down when we walked in. They told us they were only doing to-go orders, and that they wouldn't seat us even when it was lunch time. We even saw other people eating there as well, so it was quite confusing that they turned me and my children down. I eat sushi on a regular basis and I like to switch it up every now and then since there's spots that I enjoy regularly. I've had yama's before on General Booth and the one near Larkspur Middle. Yama's is the "spot" where the locals go bc they give you free stuff. I'm not swayed by such tactics plus I think their quality and taste is decent but I've had much fresher and tastier sushi. Now I'm not sure if it's this location in particular but I honestly didn't enjoy the meal we got, aside from the rolls which weren't bad. I ordered a yama dinner combo that comes with a soup & salad $17 and two rolls that I split my with my boyfriend. First I got the soup and I was really excited to try it bc it's my favorite part about going to sushi restaurants however this miso soup didn't taste like one I ever had before. Instead it tasted like sweet water... I was very disappointed. I'm not quite sure how you can mess up miso soup. It's supposed to have a slight salty taste and what they served was nothing like it. The soup was one dimensional and could have used more seasoning. Then I tried the salad, I could barely finish it bc the dressing on it tasted too bitter and acidic. I usually always try to finish my salads before a meal however I couldn't even consider this one. dressing wasn't tasty like other places I would had better luck eating it plain. Not hating on yama's bc obviously they have 3 locations and are doing well in this area. But there are other things I personally look for in sushi restaurants which are authenticity, consistency, and quality. Three things that yama's lacks for me. Ordered 2 Volcano rolls and a Spicy California roll. The batter on the outside of the volcano rolls were super thick and chewy which took away from the roll but it wasn't that good either. Wasn't spicy at all and was tasteless. The Spicy California roll was only ok as it was missing cucumber and had avocado in it which made it mushy inside. It was bland, mushy and not spicy. It could have been gas station sushi for all I knew based on the taste. If you can't make those basic rolls good, I definitely don't want to try anything else. read more

What was more pleasing, the perfect amount of food served at lunch today or the bite sized cheesecake that allowed me to have my fat kid moment without feeling like ish? I've never had a sushi restaurant serve me a cheesecake but it was possibly this moment that won me over with this place. I popped in for a quick lunch and ordered off of their lunch box special, two choices from either their basic rolls (6), specialty rolls (4), and sashimi (3). I opted for a dancing roll which was a mixture of spicy tuna, spicy salmon, and crabmeat deep fried three piece of salmon sashimi. The box came with a salad, a side of rice (thank you, Jesus, because everyone knows I have to eat rice, even with ice cream), and what tasted like tempura mushrooms (is that even a thing? ya all know, I'm a terrible Asian). Anyway, it was the perfect amount delicious enough tasting food. When it was all over, my waitress brought over a tiny cheesecake bite. Like I said, I was a fat kid for a brief moment but didn't feel I didn't cheat three years of my life scarfing down a cheesecake (I'll add for the second night in the row). We were greeted almost immediately by a waitress and lead to a table. She brought over some edamame on the house and got our drink order. We each ordered a special where you pick 2 rolls and it comes with salad. BEST SUSHI SALAD EVER! Usually those salads are just lettuce and dressing, this one had cucumbers and tomatoes and the dressing was on the side so you could put on what you wanted. They were also very cold and tasted super fresh! The rolls were great too! I got a rainbow tool and a spicy salmon roll, both delicious and not covered in a ton of extra stuff, so you could actually taste the fish. They also brought us a little plate of the BEST fried shrimp with our meal, 4 delish pieces on the house again! And then, when we asked for our tab, a little Bavarian cream pastry!
