We stumbled upon Hokkaido on Yelp and decided to give it a try. Greeted immediately, friendly staff, nice ambiance, no complaints there. 4-stars simply comes from the lack of a bar. Good sushi deserves a good martini. That part was super disappointing for me. The Tempura Veggies, Tempura Shrimp, and Sushi was all lovely. Freshly cooked / prepared and served promptly. Price was on-point and the overall experience was great. We'd be regulars if they had a full bar. If you live nearby and can tolerate dinner without a martini, give Hokkaido a try - it's worth it! read more

Hokkaido Sushi is decent sushi with generous portions. The menu has plenty of options, especially if you enjoy specialty rolls that lean bold. The Godzilla roll definitely lives up to its name, it's huge. I'm not usually someone who prefers fried sushi, but this one was actually pretty good: crispy on the outside, flavorful, and filling enough to share. I was also pleasantly surprised by the mango roll. I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did, but the sweetness worked really well and made it feel lighter and more refreshing than I anticipated. The White Tiger roll was another favorite! yummy, well-balanced, and easy to enjoy. One small thing I wish they did differently is I would love to see separate servings of ginger for each roll. Sometimes when you order multiple rolls, the ginger gets squished into one tiny container and split between three rolls, which isn't ideal if you like to cleanse your palate between bites. Also wish they had more raw options than just crab options. Overall, the sushi is good, portions are generous, and it's a comfortable place to sit down and enjoy a meal. I totally forgot to write a review. I feel fortunate to have two really nice sushi restaurants open on Vancouver's east side. This one is near Fourth Plain. I'm told that a mattress retailer used to be in the space that Hokkaido is now. The raw fish I ate in this meal was a tuna poke bowl (maybe too much rice), and a rainbow roll. Prices are slightly higher than average for Vancouver sushi. Decent food. Location is not great if they want to do a lot of business. There are no office buildings nearby and the stuff being built near 4th Plain and 162nd are warehouses. read more

Hokkaido Sushi is absolutely fantastic! It is brand-new as of this writing, is modern, open, bright, and clean. The menu is wide and has lots of items I've not seen anywhere else, prices are very low, service is FANTASTIC, and the quality of the food is superb. Examples of "Things I've not seen elsewhere" are surf clam nigiri, honey wasabi sauce, and sesame balls. The surf clam nigiri was fresh, texturally lovely, and very enjoyable. Fried items were all perfectly cooked, crispy, and not at all greasy (calamari was outstanding). I also appreciated the round, high-quality chopsticks. I highly recommend the Hokkaido roll. It is one of the most unique rolls I've ever had, and also one of the tastiest. My dining companion was also very impressed, and we're really looking forward to our next visit! read more

It's been a while since I've felt compelled to leave a review but this restaurant woke my Yelp slumber. I'm leaving them 5 stars based on the following considerations: Sushi, Price, and Customer Service. First off, look at this menu. These prices are from like 15 years ago and the appetizer menu pricing is more like from 20 years ago. I was in disbelief at first when I was reading the menu. The sushi was great. I ordered the Rainbow Roll and a Salmon Hand Roll. Best Sushi in Vancouver so far that I've tried. Fresh fish and the rice was perfect. The calamari appetizer was delicious too and it was less than $5.00. Not everything on the menu is a winner. My son didn't seem to enjoy the bento box with teriyaki chicken. I tried the chicken and it wasn't my favorite. The other thing we tried that I didn't enjoy was the cucumber salad. It unnecessarily had imitation crab in it. Never had that addition before and it would have been perfect without the imitation crab. When our server asked us if we needed a box for our bento, I told him that we won't need a box for it. I saw him do the mental math and make the presumption that our kid didn't enjoy it. He immediately told me he was taking 50% off of the price. I told him he didn't have to do that and we were happy to pay for it, but he insisted. They clearly care about their customer's experience which is nice to see. Cute little place to check out. I think their sushi game is on point and I could live off their appetizers menu and probably save money at the same time. If you are in Vancouver and enjoy sushi but also enjoy 1998 pricing, you should go check them out. read more

The place is clean, service is quick and the food is good. The serve staff was also very friendly. In todays rising prices of food, this place offers good Japanese food for the price. They are lower than most of its competitors in the area. Give them a try and guaranteed that you will be satisfied. We were huge fans of Hokkaido when they first opened. Their proximity, price, and quality were all pluses that kept us returning on a weekly basis. However, as time went by everything, except maybe the prices, began to fall First let's talk about service. Most of the servers will stand around chitchatting with each other, visibly on their cellphones, and goofing around. This often results in inattentiveness and even missing items of an order. We have experienced appetizers coming out after sushi or not at all. We've also experienced a lack of care about direct feedback like when we let them know there were bones in the salmon hand roll. They never even let the chefs know. The quality is what went down hill the most. Inconsistency was the only constant after about six months in. I generally ordered the sushi week after week but it was a surprise what it looked or tasted like. Several times I felt ill shortly after my visit. After my last visit I looked up their recent health score (thank you Yelp) and understood why. Lastly, the cleanliness really went downhill. The floors, especially headed back towards the restrooms were always sticky and you could visibly see shoe prints. The bathrooms themselves were gross. I really liked and supported this place, but watching it go downhill the way it has I will not be back. read more

I have been here multiple times already. I really enjoyed a couple of their signature sushi rolls and can't wait to try more of their menu.

This is still my #1 favorite sushi place in all of Vancouver. Their fish is ALWAYS fresh, the rice is always perfect and everything always tastes amazing. They are very consistent with food and service. Everyone who works here is always extremely polite, professional and attentive. We have been coming here since they have opened, we take all our friends and family here and everyone loves it. It has become the family sushi spot and the perfect spot for my friends. We love it so much we take our co workers here too! This place is perfect. We love sushi and are extremely picky. But we love it here and highly recommend!! Some of our favorite rolls are the Hokkaido, New Orleans, phoenix roll, the Alaska, spicy tuna and ocean city roll. My husband loves their takoyaki and poke salad. I also love the miso. So the takeaway for me is this place is good for people that don't know real Japanese food. I will say the miso soup was decent and the seaweed salad was good. The California roll was way over mayo-d, and the nigiri.... dear god it was bad. The tobiko tasted like ammonia... or some sort of chemical, and the other two I got were just a disaster. Maybe come here for non-fish Japanese food? I don't know. To be fair, the price can't be beat, and some of the other patrons' hot food looked good. However, something was off with my order this time. Ended up with a bad case of food poisoning. I dont think ill be eating sushi anymore for a long while now. I ordered veggie tempura, which was bone cold. Yakisoba which was okay. But not as good as normal. And seared salmon which they completely dropped the ball on. Barely seared at all and the rice was really watery. I don't know that I'll be going back too soon. read more
