My brother and I had looked at a number of possible assisted living facilities and Golden Heritage was my first choice. It is relatively close by to where I live and work, has an Asian staff with many speaking Mandarin (as well as I believe Catonese). There are also some Japanese and possibly some Korean residents as well. We had also considered Aegis Gardens in Fremont, but it was further away and higher cost. The place is independently owned and run by a very nice family with experience in running health care facilities. The place also felt less "corporate." The facilities were converted from a "European" style hotel - with each of the resident floors having a big common space - so it doesn't look like a typical assisted living facility or hotel. The place is clean and the staff is friendly. It took a few months for my mom to adjust living there, but she's come to enjoy living there. My mom enjoys the activities including simple daily exercises, some crafts, weekly outings to pick up small groceries (like fruit for small fridge in room) and household items, and bingo. And, often on the weekends there are small performances by local groups like youth or senior church groups I think. There is free wifi and my mom regularly streams videos from her iPad which I understand is common. Having just broken her hip my mom started off in the assisted living floor of Golden Heritage, but a few months after transitioned to an independent living floor which helped keep the costs down. Despite being in independent living they do check in on her and have called my brother or I when they have noticed problems such as falls or strange behavior; we monitored more carefully and eventually had a medical issue taken care of. It definitely gives me piece of mind knowing that she's being watched over. All in all I'm very satisfied with Golden Heritage. I think if you're looking into senior facilities for you elderly loved one you should definitely check out multiple places as they will each feel a little different to you. I wouldn't state that Golden Heritage is for everyone, but it's been working very well for my mom.

Finding the right assisted living facility can be overwhelming, but Villa Fontana has been a true…read moreblessing for my 95-year-old dad and me. It was incredibly difficult to tell my dad that I could no longer manage his growing caregiving needs, but Merife and Michelle made the transition easier by assisting me when I shared the news at his home, where he had lived for 60 years. Our first lunch at Villa Fontana was nothing short of serendipitous--my dad was reunited with a former co-worker he hadn't seen in decades! The meal was so delicious that he kept saying "oishi" (Japanese for "delicious"). It truly felt like a home-cooked meal, starting with a cream of potato soup, followed by a bountiful salad with hardboiled eggs, olives, and more. The main course featured chicken parmesan, spaghetti, perfectly prepared vegetables, and a berry pie à la mode for dessert. My dad's room is bright and cheerful, overlooking a gorgeous courtyard. It was recently remodeled with new carpet and granite countertops, making it feel fresh and inviting. To help ease his transition, Merife arranged 24/7 caregiving services from Harmony for the first three days--an unexpected but deeply appreciated gesture. Each caregiver was kind, attentive, and communicative with me, which made all the difference. Just 3 days after moving in, my dad had a small accident during the night, falling on the bathroom floor. Thankfully, he wasn't harmed, and the staff immediately provided me with pictures to reassure me that he was okay. Their attentiveness and quick response gave me so much peace of mind. Perhaps the biggest change has been in my dad's daily routine. Before moving in, he spent his days watching TV from morning until night. Now, he participates in group morning exercises, and when I asked what he liked the most about Villa Fontana, he replied, Bingo! He also loves that he can enjoy ice cream every day--a small but meaningful joy. The entire staff at Villa Fontana has been incredibly friendly and kind. In addition to Merife and Michelle, I want to give a special shoutout to Jefferson, who always greets me at the front desk with a smile, as well as Allyssa, Maryann (the activity director), Maryann (the med tech), Manny, Marycris, and Roselily. I know I'm still learning everyone's names, so my apologies if I've left anyone out! Villa Fontana has truly exceeded my expectations, and I'm so grateful my dad is in such a caring and supportive environment. I moved my mom from a memory care facility in Mountain View because she was falling almost every…read moreday - she is wheelchair-bound and cannot walk or stand without assistance. I felt like she was not safe at the previous place due to lack of consistent supervision for all the residents.- not just my mom. I didn't want to risk my mom's already fragile state, waiting for them to fix the problems and lack of good staffing. We found Sunnyside Gardens through my mom's hospice provider (and hospice should know - they have to visit all their patients in memory care or skilled-nursing facilities). Sunnyside is not flashy -- it's the PEOPLE that make it beyond amazing. I have never found my mother (or any other resident) alone or unsupervised at Sunnyside. The staff is super friendly, and they all jump in to help each other with the residents. They are completely informative and prompt whenever there may be an issue with my mom's health - and they also tell hospice, so I don't have to do anything. I have never been kept in the loop like this - it's really caring and compassionate. I love my mom's room - it's got its own sliding glass door (alarmed) so I can take my mom outside in a gated patio/garden area. The laundry and cleaning schedules are clearly posted in her bathroom, and I've never seen my mom's room look dirty or messy. It could be that they keep it clean since she is never really in her room except to sleep! She is kept with her friends (other residents) in the activity area, eating in the dining area, or on trips with the staff. She had no issues fitting in and becoming part of the Sunnyside Gardens family. I have said it many times in the months my mom has been there - the staff is amazing - every single one of them, from the executive director to the facilities manager, from the memory care director to the caregivers.

The medical team was knowledgeable and proactive, providing excellent communication and peace of mind. I want to especially mention Yazmin, Rajinder, Ed, Brisa and Karen. But all staff were great. I had several interactions with the cleaning and kitchen teams. They were highly professional and supportive. They were great at letting me know what was going on with my dad and making sure he was taken by ambulance to the hospital when necessary. They also provided a lot of valuable advice to me on his care/doctors including recommending a hospice provider when that time came. The driver, Ed, even visited my dad at the hospital several times while he was there. The facility itself is beautifully maintained, clean, and inviting. Each room has a private bathroom and patio. The meals were nutritious and delicious, and there were always engaging activities to keep residents active and social. The staff does their best to get residents to participate. It was comforting to know that my dad was in such good hands, surrounded by people who genuinely cared for him. I am forever grateful for the kindness and dedication of everyone at Sunnyside Gardens. We spent some happy days with my beloved MIL there. I moved MIL from a country club like larger assisted care Memory Care where she fell on her face and broke her nose within 2 hours of my leaving. It was just too big for her. Board and Care is much more personal with a better ratio of 2:6 ratio of caregiving. My MIL came in a wheelchair and within a month was back to walking with a walker then cane! She perked up being around other seniors and even made a new best friend. The rooms are spacious, and the backyard has a little walking path with flowering plants and fruit trees. Residents and the house and yard are well cared for, and the staff cooks meals from scratch. The staff is professional, kind, and patient. I am thankful there was an opening when my MIL needed it.

Toured Atria Willow Glen as a potential independent living community for my mother. They also have…read moreassisted living and memory care, should she need it. Atria is a gorgeous place with huge trees, gardens, koi pond, and creek. The person who gave us the tour was the memory care director. She was very warm and knowledgeable and genuinely interested in getting to know my mom and her current living/health situation. The dining room is clean and spacious and there was a friendly warmth from the staff and residents. I was pleased to find out in addition to three meals a day, they serve coffee and breakfast all day until 5pm. When a resident is sick or just doesn't feel like going to the dining room, they can have food delivered to their apartment. There is also the option of cooking in the small kitchen in their apartment. Atria has lots of activities and events for residents. They go to interesting places like San Francisco, Monterey, etc. There are groups to join, too, like a knitting or writing group. Garden plots are available in the community garden and there is a heated outdoor swimming pool. My mom loved the apartment she was shown. Since this was the first community she looked at, we are going to tour a few more before making a decision. It's hard to imagine a nicer place.

However, I find it very unsafe to not have personnel on site monitoring their movements in the shopping plaza. I just encountered a resident who forgot where she needed to meet for pickup. I give credit to how quickly they arrived, but even the man who answered the phone seemed rude and lacked compassion. I worry because the Almaden plaza usually draws homeless as well as thieves. God forbid they lose their memory at the wrong time. I hope this is an issue with rapid resolve for the sake of others' elderly loved ones.

Beware of hospice of the valley. They are clueless when it comes to giving comfort to patients with…read moreend stage lung diseases. After being forced to sign in a relative into this "hospice" one of their nurses told me the truth and said they are "still learning about how to treat patients" with respiratory distress. She was not kidding. This hospice was useless,incompetent and was very sadistic to my relative (the patient had never smoked in their life, was stable until the last 1 year of their life when they went on constant supplemental oxygen ) My relative died a horrible death , and suffered severely for the last 3 hours of their life , literally suffocating with this "hospice " care in el camino hospital. One of the hospice student nurses decided to reduce the oxygen flow for the relative, who was kept comfortable with the original level. It was the hospice doctors bad decision to lower the oxygen flow and then give morphine/valium/etc. After that, for over 3 hours, the patient suffocated and suffered great discomfort to death. They were literally Suffocating, And the breath sounds were not the usual end of life death rattle and not cheyne stokes breathing. (patient went into the hospice after getting stabilized by the ER department, then transferred to 3rd floor TCU. The hospitalists wanted the hospital room for someone else - it's a business, after all. So we were pressured into signing up our relative into this horrific hospice. El camino hospital hospitalists and Sutter /hospice of the valley knew we were in a vulnerable situation. ) In the last 3 hours of their life, my relative suffered with loud labored breathing, with a look of terror on their face. Never in the course of their illness did they have so much suffering, until the incompetent hospice of the valley nurses and doctors (in training) did their mischief with the patient. The relative had a pained desperate expression , looked like they were drowning, and we family members only stood by helplessly and kept begging the nurses for pain medication for the patient, which they did eventually. Maybe they were waiting for the approval of the hospice doctor. Family members foolishly trusted this hospice to help make the dying process a little easier. I'm very surprised the hospice nurses and doctors don't know much about treating /comforting patients with end stage lung cancer , COPD, emphysema, interstitial lung diseases etc. Because all of those usually, not always, end with respiratory distress for the patient. Kevorkian would have been more effective and sympathetic. The clergy man was the only competent and compassionate person we encountered. Maybe this hospice is only for dementia patients. Unfortunately, I've sadly seen two other relatives die in 2 different hospices (not "hospice" of the valley, and they suffered too , but the nurses and doctors were a little more knowledgeable and helpful. hospice of the valley is the worst. I understand the need for hospice, but do your research on which hospices are best for you or your loved one's condition/disease/illness. Veterinarians are more knowledgeable and compassionate to animals that need euthanasia. Even convicts on death row have quicker less unpleasant deaths , compared to what my relative experienced with this novice hospice.
