Cute space literally steps from the beach. Always wanted to go when it was Mrs. Olson's but never made it. Stopped in with my mom for breakfast around 9:30 on Monday, just as the crowd started to pick up. Fresh, simple food--not wow-level, particularly given the price, but it's hard to argue with solid breakfast food. Pancakes that came with my "California" eggs combo could have been fluffier, but the taste was there, and my over-easy eggs were perfectly done. My mom really loved her huevos rancheros, too. I would have liked more attentive service, but I can't really blame my server given the crowd--place was packed a few minutes after we got there. Overall, I still prefer Golden Egg on Victoria next to the gym for the attention to detail on the food preparations and the value for the price, but I would go back to this place for sure. read more

I have a soft spot for a place that serves breakfast all day and night. This cafe is a half neighborhood dive, half laid-back family restaurant. You can check out their menu by scanning the barcode. It's much cleaner that way! I love the tucked away, spacious, surprise layout of this place. It's so nice to have a resource like this restaurant so close to Hollywood Beach. They have a surprisingly extensive menu. They serve something for everyone, and they also serve alcoholic drinks and beers. It is a great 1 mile walk from the Embassy Suites, or the park, if you are staying or playing near the resort. It's actually the most beautiful, sunny, and spacious walkway to get here, that I've ever taken. This place is Fido friendly, where you can hang out on their intimate, outdoor, back patio. Bright and bubbly servers were wearing masks and the overall upbeat and unpretentious atmosphere felt so nice. The food portions are generous and tasty for being a beach shack hide-away. My husband ordered a burger with onion rings and I ordered the mango chicken salad, which I couldn't finish, because the portion size was so generous and filling. Coming here summed up a wonderful afternoon filled with fun ocean activities. You should definitely check this place out! read more

This place was such a good find. They have a lot of variety of food. It was a bit more packed than I expected but it was a good atmosphere. The food was pretty good. We stopped in here for a bite to eat after a morning if kayaking, and we were all pleasantly surprised with everything. The location is perfect, just steps from the beach, and the service was flawless. It really has a close, personal feel, and the servers were all very attentive. I wasn't super hungry so I opted for a bowl of chili. It was DELICIOUS! All of my friends chose different kinds of burgers, and they were all a hit. Also, the fries were so good. The BEST spot for breakfast in all of Ventura and Santa Barbara County! It's a small restaurant but I've never had a problem with wait times. I went on June 8, 2020 around 9AM and the hostess and waitress (I don't remember their names) were so kind. Every time I go they always give great service! I got the Ventura breakfast, which comes with 2 eggs, sausage/bacon, home style potatoes, and 2 pieces of toast. My husband got the chicken and waffle. I also got a mocha and a side of tots to share. Everything was amazing! The chicken and waffle is HUGE, definitely enough to share with one person. The tots were crisped to perfection, probably the best tots I've ever had. The mocha was the perfect blend of chocolate and espresso flavor. The sausage and potatoes with my breakfast were also amazing! If you're ever in the area, make it a point to go here! read more

When they get caught they request another waitress to assist you and you will hardly see her. This is our must stop on the way back from Solvang to L.A. It is in a really quiet area and you can tell everyone there is a local just out to enjoy breakfast. It is busy so we try to get their early to beat the crowd. I have had the chicken and waffles and it was good. but the must get is the tri-tip with a bloody mary. This is very much like a quintessential San Diego style beach cafe. Glad to see something like it in Ventura County, which for a long time has been the quietest of beach communities in all of So Cal. They have a full bar, so you can have bloody marys or mimosas or whatever you'd like with your brunch--a key component. Food is very good. Portions can be a little small for the price point, but was still very good. I had the Ventura breakfast and the french toast was fantastic. Their "mexican" breakfasts are very Anglo-fied, but still tasty. The waitresses and hostess were all super cute beach girl types quick to flash a smile. All and all, I will be heading back to HBC anytime I'm in that neighborhood. read more

Went to HBC with my fiancé on a Sunday afternoon and I was very disappointed with the whole establishment. I understand that Sunday's are usually the busiest especially on Father's Day but they were very unorganized. The hostess didn't know what she was doing, she lost countless party check ins and kept making new lists so you had to make sure they didn't forget about you. Definitely NOT Mrs. Olson's! We drove out from Simi to try this place because another Yelp reviewer stated it was similar to Mrs. Olson's...it's not. Interestingly, the HBC location seemed to be the same as Mrs. Olson's when we were there over a year ago, then I learned (from newspaper articles on the wall) that Mrs. Olson's moved down the street, and HBC moved to the old Mrs. Olson's location. That is the only "similarity." Three stars determined as follows: 1. Five stars for the two giant pieces of French toast...presentation was awesome, and the taste was great but bigger is not always better. Also for the room-temperature side of butter. Restaurants typically give refrigerated cold butter when you ask for extra butter; it doesn't melt into the food even after placing it between hot pancakes...cold butter pretty much sucks. This is obviously a problem for me, because I LOVE extra butter, and I hate how difficult it can be to get my food all buttery and gooey with cold hard butter! Ugh. So cheers to HBC for their room temp sides of butter! Why can't all other restaurants follow this protocol?!? Also, the free wifi was nice too. 2. Four stars for the location near the beach. Yay. 3. Three stars for the (meh) service, high-ish prices (likely due to rental space near the beach; not justified for my experience) and enclosed, high-walled patio that seemed as though we weren't quite outside. Three stars for it not being close in quality and comparison to Mrs. Olson's, but higher pricing is similar to Mrs. Olson's. This lower quality experience at HBC would have earned more stars if their prices were lower. I would probably give HBC a better review under different circumstances, but with its proximity to Mrs. Olson's, I'm comparing to and factoring that in to my rating. HBC is okay, not bad at all. Possibly above-average breakfast. But the whole time I was wishing we were at Mrs. O's. My five-star items aren't strong enough to raise the three-star items to an overall four-star review. I would only recommend HBC late in the day, after Mrs. O's is closed, and for meal(s) other than breakfast or lunch, or maybe for drinks and dessert. Please note I am not affiliated with Mrs. Olson's in any way, and they did not pay me to write any of this. I feel the Yelp reviewers let me down for the first time, because one actually states HBC is similar to Mrs. Olson's. Not even close. Stopped by for a late breakfast/lunch. We were seated right away in the dining room. We ordered 2 HBC Bloody Mary's ($9 ea.), spicy, nice consistency. I ordered the sea bass bowl and was told they were out of sea bass, but could substitute for salmon or seared ahi. Tried it w/the seared ahi, wow! It was delicious, perfect combination of flavors, and huge portion, enough for 2 ($16). We also tried the chicken fried steak ($13), lightly battered, lots of flavor. Food and drinks came out fast and our service was great. The parking seems like it might be an issue at peak times, as well as the wait. There are high chairs for little ones and a kids menu as well. I thought with all the 5 star reviews we would give the place a try since it was a 1 minute walk from the house we were staying at. I got a veggie omelette, the description said it had goat cheese, red pepper, zucchini, and basil pesto. When they brought it out, it was a fairly small sized omelette with a blob of greenish cream looking sauce inside. I had to ask the waitress if that was pesto mixed with goat cheese and she said it was. That was not how it was described and there was not nearly enough of it which made for a fairly bland omelette. I got the home fries which were actually decent. For $14 I expected something much better. The $3 omelette I get at the cafeteria where I work was far better. My husband got the breakfast burrito which was filled with way too much sour cream. The waitress did not come back to fill our coffee, which by the way was good but $3 a cup, again not worth the premium. I also had to ask for water. After tip we spent $39 on a breakfast that was no better than IHOP. read more
