Been curious to try this Cafe for several years and decided this was the morning to do just that and have a breakfast. They open at 7:00 on a Saturday and customer number two was not there until 8:00 so already it's my kind of place LOL. The patio outside is nice and you get a nice look at the marina. So I ordered the Ventura omelette which comes with bacon mushrooms olives sour cream and avocados. To my delight also includes a generous portion of hash browns. All this costs $23 no drink tax and tip included. Now for the downlow: As much as I wanted to give a higher rating to these typa small businesses, can't for a couple of reasons. First of all the hash browns although texture-wise was cooked perfectly, it had a very heavy frying /cooking oil taste like it hadn't been changed for awhile. I never like to nit-pick but it was overwhelming. Second, the omelette had a very funny taste to it almost as if the pan was used for something else and then this was cooked on/after it so I couldn't quite identify what it was but it just didn't taste right. It had some bacon in it but it was fatty and undercooked too. so although the presentation and portion was nice and the price was right, didn't really inspire me to come back unfortunately. It wasn't terrible by any means but enough to not want to try something else. I don't know how I have missed this place. I think its location is a little unfortunate being in the same street and third in line for a breakfast place. The place is EXTREMELY tiny but does technically have inside and outside seating (outside dog friendly). It also has parking in the back if you can fit in the alley and if there are any spots available behind the restaurant. I went in not expecting anything one way or the other, but I was pleasantly surprised. The decor is cute and kitschy without being overdone or cheesy and crowded. The food tasted fresh and authentically homemade. We got a skillet and an omelette. I also got a specialty latte and it was delicious! I definitely want to go back again and try other menu items and bring more people. read more

Hmm... I ate here about a year ago and remember really liking the food. So, this morning as we drove past Pete's and saw it was pretty packed, we thought why not just go to Golden Egg instead. I ordered the same dish I got a year ago (Chorizo Skillet). When it arrived I was surprised to see it was delivered on a plate rather than an actual skillet like it was last time. So it's not a skillet? I also ordered my eggs over medium but they weren't. They were over easy/super runny. Golden Egg Cafe was one of those cafes I passed a few times and became intrigued to try! Finally my boyfriend and I made a stop for breakfast. We came at a good time so there were plenty of tables to choose from. My boyfriend and I opted for a little table by the door. For drinks, we kept it simple and had glasses of water. For our food, we got a cinnamon roll to start. It was soft and sweet but not too sweet. It was very delicious. For our entrees, I got chilaquiles while my boyfriend had a California omelet. A few minutes after ordering everything arrived. It was really good! I had a couple of bites from my boyfriend's plate and he had some from mine. Everything was very delicious. I think what I was hoping for at Golden Egg Cafe was exactly what I got! It was a really cute breakfast place with a variety of dishes sure to satisfy anyone's palette. It has been 6 years since we've lived in Ventura and while we lived here the Golden Egg Cafe was a regular spot we'd dine for breakfast. Loved the welcoming and comforting atmosphere and service. I'm so happy to say that absolutely nothing has changed! We're in town for the weekend and the Golden Egg Cafe was a no brainer. This morning we arrived and were seated right away. Staff continue to shine with their hospitality. I love that their cafe continues to feel like you're at a family's house for a hot meal. The menu is almost the same, which I love. My chorizo skillet continues to be my favorite and my husband continues to compare all chilaquiles to theirs! It was a happy return and everything from our meal to the coffee was delicious. The kids ordered a pancake with bacon and happy to say they devoured it all. Thank you, Golden Egg Cafe, for staying true to what makes you great! I ordered a 3 egg breakfast with hash browns and English muffin. Solid choice, sometimes a basic breakfast is what the soul needs. My toddler had the French toast with fruit. So good. An eggy type of french toast and fresh fruit made it even more delicious. Parking can be a little tricky. Limited options on Main and a few spot in the back. Food was good. We looked up this little spot on Google and we decided to give it a try. We were not disappointed. The coffee was good and our food was brought out on time. I ordered the chilaquiles verdes and oh boy were they good. I won't be eating again until tomorrow from how full I am. I complimented the chef on the scrumptious chilaquiles and they even thought of naming them after me (lol). This place wins breakfast. It is so cute, and the food is perfect. Most of the seating is outside. It is clearly a local spot. People come in and greet each other by name. Our waitress, Jennifer, is so kind and welcoming. She came right over to my little dog with duck jerky treats, asked all of our names, and made us feel super welcome. We had a lovely conversation with her throughout our meal. The menu is huge. There is everything you can dream of for your standard breakfast. The one thing I will say is there is no vegan meat option, but there is plenty of avocado and a huge mix of sautéed vegetables, and I personally like that better. I got the two breakfast burrito special and my partner got a scramble with fruit. Normally a side of fruit is tiny, but hers was a huge bowl of extremely fresh, local fruit. You can see that they prioritize locally sourced items, which I love. Our meals were fresh, tasty, and not overly greasy like a lot of breakfast places can be. We are ordering biscuits & gravy from a different Ventura restaurant every Sunday. This is week two of our weekly challenge. I ordered a full order of biscuits & gravy. That has 2 biscuits & gravy. Hubby hopes that the gravy provided is enough. At first bite, Hubby said that the biscuit was doughy. He said look at this. I didn't see what he was saying. Then he rolled up the middle of one the biscuits into a ball. Then I saw what he was saying. Hubby said the gravy was meh; I think he actually said eh. He added butter & ground pepper to it to make better...with our additions it is nearly a 3. No... it isn't. Hubby just said, Let's let it go. Which means it is going down the garbage disposal. The cost was $6.50. With tax it was $7. I tipped $1. Although we won't be coming back for the biscuits & gravy. We will try other breakfast options in hope of bringing our rating up. The Golden Egg is a super solid, roadside restaurant with excellent outdoor seating. The street is a little busy, but the food, seating and staff make for an enjoyable dining experience. For me, it was ALL about the chilaquiles. I ordered chorizo chilaquiles with beans and home fries. The house-made chips were thick enough to soak up the green chili sauce and yet retain a moderate level of crispness. The chorizo wasn't overly salty or overpowering, it was well-balanced dish. Located next door to an alternative breakfast place with a 45 minute to 1 hour wait, we breezed right into the Golden Egg and were seated immediately. The food next door might be good, but I couldn't be any happier about our meal today. In fact, due to the excellent service from the sweet waitress who said she has worked here for 10 years, I'll definitely be coming back next time I'm in town. read more
