the happy bar sign
Nadine C.

Located on the Ground Floor of the California Hotel and Casino in Downtown, Las Vegas, this relatively new bar has all of the normal standard drinks and those colorful, sweet, slushy, fruity drinks that I prefer! My sisters and I happened to have some time between shopping and eating, so we sat down for a round. My baby sister likes to relax at the end of the day... I blame her... Service was okay - the workers were chatting amongst themselves, so I felt like we were bothering them. Maybe it was a slow time (it's open 24/7)? Anyway, I like to play video poker while sitting at the bar if there's no conversation going on and the Progressive amount is high. The thing that bothers me most is the name of the bar: Holoholo in Hawaiian language is not "happy". The poster for the bar says, "The Happy Bar". However, holoholo means "to go for a ride" or "to go out". "Happy", or "happiness" in Hawaiian is "hau'oli" (not to be confused with haole = foreigner). Mahalo (thank you) for reading!

Had a few drinks here while visiting the cal. Played some video poker, watched the football game, and drank some beer. Bartenders were great! They gave us free beer as long as we played poker so we played for quite awhile. The atmosphere was great and the beer was cold! We will be back!

Located inside the California Hotel on the ground floor. This is one of my favorite bars to go to when I plan on drinking a night in downtown. They have $3 beers and $4 shots. Great prices for alcohol downtown, especially if you are trying to pregame for a night out! The staff here is great. They are extremely friendly and give off a great vibe. Overall good time here at Holo Holo. Love the name too! If you get hungry after, head over to the restaurant with the oxtail special. It's so worth it.

Crown Royal Reserve... very smooth indeed.

Holo Holo bar is the best in the Cal. Dave is the best bartender there. He's a true New Yorker in humor and attitude...lol. That being said, he is friendly, cool, and funny as hell. I like to go and hang out and talk story with Dave while I watch the game or play some Keno. Here is a pic of my most recent stay.

Good Juju beer to try. Whipped creation.

I'm just going to say it upfront, this place is not about aesthetics at all…read more The inside is a little run down, nothing curated or "cute" about it. I even noticed small drips on the wall that looked like sauce stains, so yeah...not the kind of spot you come to for ambiance. BUT. The food? Absolutely makes up for it. I saw a steady stream of DoorDash drivers coming in and out the entire time, which already told me this place is popular for a reason and after eating, I get it. The food is really good. Like, seasoned all the way through, flavorful, not dry, not bland everything just hits. The chicken was juicy and tender with that perfect grilled flavor, and the portions are generous. The rice was fluffy, the mac salad was creamy and balanced, and everything together just felt like a solid, satisfying plate. No shortcuts, no watered down flavor, just good food done right. Vegas has a LOT of Hawaiian BBQ spots, but hands down...this is one of the best, if not the best I've had out here. So yeah, don't come here expecting vibes. Come here because you want a plate that's actually worth your money.

Place is showing zero pride. This was our favorite go to spot off strip that we visit every time we come to Vegas and that we recommend to everyone. This trip I brought my mother and bragged about it on our drive. She refused to order anything there as soon as we walked in. So there were No ribs today and they don't know when or if another location they will have them?? Spam musubi is premade but did not look great once opened. My son took one bite and said it was disgusting- No musubi sauce and tasted like it has been sitting for a while. Like just make them fresh if they're gonna sit all day. I also decided to haphazardly order a very sad and pathetic side of Mac salad that didn't taste like anything. 2 OG musubi and a side of Mac salad for $11 that went straight into the garbage. We Debated coming back on a different day on this LV trip to see if it's an off day but not sure I can after seeing how dirty it was and that they are ok to sell crap to loyal customers. This is so sad and disappointing! Hope they can bounce back because the food truly was so awesome.

Things were still getting together but I have faith they will get back to their normal flow. Food was tasty as always. Had the beef ribs and the kalua pig today. The Kalua pig was a very tasty version. One of the better ones I've had in town for my taste. Not too smoky, felt like it was roasted for a long time. The meat was still intact but tender. Ribs were as they always are. The only thing today, was that the boxes didn't feel as full as they normally do. Only got 4 ribs today and they weren't all that meaty. The pig dish wasn't full to the brim either. Also, prices have gone up from the menu, so seeing higher prices (totally understandable) and less food was a little disappointing. Service was friendly for the most part, but be ready for longer waits. Maybe it was because of the move, but it was a 15-20 min wait today. The ribs are still the best in town, I'm hoping the small portion was just a one off.

I used to order the chicken plate for 15 bucks and I would be able to have it for lunch and dinner now that same chicken plate is $20 and only enough for one setting. I checked in and then was told it was an additional 35 minutes left, which was disappointing and I wish the waitlist accurately reflected what the host said. So after over an hour, I finally get seated and order the Korean fried chicken. It was cold and not even room temperature. At this point I didn't bother asking for another place because they were low staffed and the replacement plate was just gonna come cold again. But my waiter and the host were really nice and sweet girls. I went to pay at the register since my waiter told me to and that she can finish it there. Another waiter at the register said he can't finish my payment bc my waiter needed to do it, even though it was cash, I told him it was cash and didn't need change. After 5-10 minutes later of just standing at the register because my waiter wasn't coming, he's like OH it's cash I can take it. When I was standing there waiting for someone to take my payment, all the staff was just apologizing to everyone. I've been going to this location for awhile now and it's just consistently under staffed and I always get cold food. I hope they hire more help because every time I go management just lets them drown every time.

I usually judge Hawaiian spots by…read morethree things: the quality of their macaroni salad, the eggs on their loco moco, and their spam musubi. Frank's macaroni salad wasn't the absolute best I've had, but it was genuinely good--surprisingly better than Zippy's, a true Hawaii staple. The loco moco was excellent: the eggs were perfectly cooked, bright yellow and so delicate they looked like they'd break if you stared at them too long. You get two juicy hamburger patties and two generous scoops of rice, making it easy to stretch into two solid meals. The spam musubi was fresh and still warm (we ordered right at opening at 11 AM and picked it up by 11:30). They added a touch of teriyaki sauce between the rice and spam, which I'm usually not a fan of, but it actually worked really well here. The salty, grilled spam still shone through. The spot itself is a classic Hawaiian BBQ cafe--simple, no-frills, with a mix of sit-down tables and to-go boxes flying out the door. You could tell they had just opened but were already deep into the lunch rush. Even so, service was impressively smooth. We were quoted about 20 minutes, but I walked in, hit a short line, and was back out the door with piping-hot food in under five minutes. I'll definitely be coming back for some Hawaiian comfort food.

No having to navigate through the casino. This was our first time at Ai Pono Café, but it is officially on our dining-out rotation. Our food was tasty and fresh. I went with the Spicy Ahi Bowl. The rice was sticky and the tuna was not over seasoned...fresh and flavorful. Our table shared the Spicy Poke Nachos. So good. The wonton chips were light and crispy. His cousin couldn't stop raving about the food, so we decided to check it out for dinner last night. We ordered the Crackhead Chicken and Da "OG" Beef to share, and I also got a Spam musubi I had been craving. The musubi was HUGE and really hit the spot. We also ordered a side of Crackhead Chicken without the spice for our 1 year old, and she LOVED it. Normally she throws her food, but this time she actually ate it and kept making the cutest "yummy" faces the whole time. The moment I took my first bite of chicken, my reaction said it all. The flavor was INCREDIBLE! It had a perfect balance of sweetness from the coconut and a nice kick from the spices. Everything worked so well together, and the chicken itself was unbelievably moist and juicy. I also loved that the meat was served over the rice, allowing for all the juices to soak in. The rice was soft, flavorful, and just as satisfying. The macaroni salad was hands down my favorite compared to any Hawaiian BBQ spot I've tried. I also had a few bites of the beef, which had an amazing flavor and just the right amount of char to elevate it even more. The only thing that didn't stand out to me was the coleslaw, but we found out later that you can substitute for extra macaroni salad for an additional 50 cents. We will definitely do that next time! Overall, we had a fantastic experience and will absolutely be back whenever we are in the area. One quick note for parents: there are no high chairs available, and we even searched the entire food court. Since it's inside a casino, it's understandable, but just something to keep in mind.
