I'll start by saying I'm a fan of the food "court" layout at the Durango. I use the term court, but it's more than that. Access to the dining area is right off the self-park elevator. No having to navigate through the casino. This was our first time at Ai Pono Café, but it is officially on our dining-out rotation. Our food was tasty and fresh. I went with the Spicy Ahi Bowl. The rice was sticky and the tuna was not over seasoned...fresh and flavorful. Our table shared the Spicy Poke Nachos. So good. The wonton chips were light and crispy. My husband's cousin first told us about Ai Pono in Costa Mesa, and when my husband looked it up, he realized there was a location right here in Las Vegas inside Durango Station. His cousin couldn't stop raving about the food, so we decided to check it out for dinner last night. We ordered the Crackhead Chicken and Da "OG" Beef to share, and I also got a Spam musubi I had been craving. The musubi was HUGE and really hit the spot. We also ordered a side of Crackhead Chicken without the spice for our 1 year old, and she LOVED it. Normally she throws her food, but this time she actually ate it and kept making the cutest "yummy" faces the whole time. The moment I took my first bite of chicken, my reaction said it all. The flavor was INCREDIBLE! It had a perfect balance of sweetness from the coconut and a nice kick from the spices. Everything worked so well together, and the chicken itself was unbelievably moist and juicy. I also loved that the meat was served over the rice, allowing for all the juices to soak in. The rice was soft, flavorful, and just as satisfying. The macaroni salad was hands down my favorite compared to any Hawaiian BBQ spot I've tried. I also had a few bites of the beef, which had an amazing flavor and just the right amount of char to elevate it even more. The only thing that didn't stand out to me was the coleslaw, but we found out later that you can substitute for extra macaroni salad for an additional 50 cents. We will definitely do that next time! Overall, we had a fantastic experience and will absolutely be back whenever we are in the area. One quick note for parents: there are no high chairs available, and we even searched the entire food court. The service is always top notch. You can literally see them making your food in the giant glass kitchen. I have tried 3 different foods, but the old school with spam and eggs is my favorite. The other two dishes were spectacular as well. There is just something about spam and eggs though, with the Tabasco. It was terrific. The portion size allowed me to make 2 meals. Their restaurant is table and benches, so you can bring friends easily. The music is fun to listen to inside, it's well lit and I always get great service. I'm a big fan of loco moco, and this one was decent.. just not the best I've had. Out of all the loco mocos I've tried, only one really stood out, and that was in San Diego (sadly that restaurant isn't open anymore). I did love the deep, dark, thick gravy here, but it could've used a bit more flavor. The eggs was perfectly cooked with yolk running. Given that this isn't traditional Vietnamese bahn mi sandwich territory I hoped it would somewhat give that flavor. The bun was soggy immediately and the meat was overpowering all the tie in ingredients like the pickled cucumbers and cilantro. I was hoping for that same crunch I normally get. The zombie plate was packed & beautifully presented but the meat jun didn't have much flavor and was soggy. The short rib was very flavorful and cooked well. the chicken was delicious and perfectly seasoned with a kick of flavor! I would have just ordered the chicken for that flavor. The latest restaurant we tried is Ai Pono Cafe which is a Hawaiian street food spot located at the Durango Casino food hall. We arrived for late dinner on a Saturday night due to our late flight arrival. Thank god the cafe closed at 11:00pm. The casino has a large parking lot all around so parking is always easy and accessible. The cafe has its' own dining space with a few picnic tables inside. We chose to eat in the food hall tables area as friends in our party grabbed other food. We ordered the Crackhead Chicken, Ahi Poke Bowl, 2 Spamusubis, and the Dirty licking Korean Chicken. Everything was delicious. My Crackhead Chicken was so flavorful and tasty. The portions was big which is always a plus. The staff was very friendly and helpful with the menu. We went to the Durango food court for dinner and came upon this Hawaiian Cafe towards the back side. The restaurant is clean & very stylishly decorated. It's a casual restaurant where the menu rotates on a screen above the cashier. So be patient when reading it because they don't have a written menu. We ordered the poké bowl with tuna which comes with seaweed salad and crab salad on top of a bed of rice. The tuna was fresh and the crab salad was delicious. The teriyaki chicken bowl was bread chicken breast glazed with this fabulous teriyaki sauce on top of a bed of rice. I asked if napkins and silverware were inside the bag because I looked and didn't see a station that had silverware and napkins in the restaurant but she confirmed that those items were in the bag. Why couldn't she just put my food on a plate? I asked for a cup of water, I don't drink any soda or soft drinks. She said they don't have comp water, only bottled water and I could walk across to the sandwich shop for water. What in tarnation?? I just dropped $30 on food and I can't get water? So bizarre. I just looked at her like really? So I grabbed my food and ate at the counter. The sandwich was good flavor, a lot of bread though. Garlic fries were good. The musubi pieces were too much rice! I was like omg so on the Korean chicken one, I peeled the top off and ate just the meat and seaweed. It was literally a half of cup of rice on it, too much. The sausage one was pure rice. The sausage was a paper thin 1 slice of meat with a cup of rice wrapped in seaweed. I peeled all that rice off. Overall the food was good, I've had better Hawaiian food in town so I wouldn't return for that reason. The experience is why I rated a 3 star due to the service experience. I ordered an Ai Pono Moko which is described as "'Ai Pono Made Angus Patty, 2 Eggs Over Rice Covered in 'Ai Pono Made Brown Gravy" and is as delicious as it sounds. I also got a fruit punch. Ordered my wife a spicy chicken plate which she absolutely loved. She had a Guava Lemonade. Portions were enough for leftovers the next morning. The dessert was fantastic at our table and the next morning as well. Great atmosphere in the restaurant with Hawaiian pictures and decor everywhere. I ordered the daily special consisting of teriyaki pork chop, chicken thigh and beef, and of course rice, macaroni salad and it came with coleslaw(yuck) too, The serving size was definitely shy of true Hawaiian serving size. The poor Hawaiian's sure would be on a diet with those serving sizes(lol). It's quite adequate for normal people but normal people tend to not eat very much. It all started with the cashier being abrupt and told us that they're closing in 5 mins even though it's at least more than 1 hour before the posted closing time. I took it back to the counter and showed the cashier the raw meat for which she immediately apologized and offered a drink on the house. There are quite a few tables and service was super friendly making recommendations and being generally welcoming. I started off with the guava lemonade, which had good guava flavor but luckily wasn't super tart and was a good balance to my meal the Da Zombie platter. That platter came with three different meats: Korean short rib, Korean fried chicken and steak ju, which was a lightly battered steak along with Mac salad, bean sprouts, kimchi, pickles over white rice. The Korean short rib was nice and tender with a good flavor. The Korean fried chicken was sticky spicy but could have used a bit more crisp and the steak ju was the lightest fried batter I've ever seen on a steak and truly a wonderful and unique flavor experience. The Mac salad was a good texture and had great seasoning along with all the other compliments. The seating was nice and comfortable with tables and booths set up throughout. The food was okay for the most part but not really memorable. The worst part this was my friend's chicken katsu came out undercooked which is really not okay. There was a sloppy wrapped foil pack that had the worst made Musubi I have ever seen inside. We got 2 plates in order to get a taste of everything. The 2 things that were good were the Poke and the Furikaki Ahi. The chicken was so over cooked the meat inside wasn't edible, the short ribs weren't cooked enough so they were chewy and full of non edible fat. Even the red hotdog and spam were overcooked and dry. The fried noodles were good in flavor, but the noodles were chewy and they were extremely salty. This place has the potential to be good, but the people running it obviously do not care about the restaurant. However, it was a notch too salty and I could not eat more than half of it. Non-fried Noodles with Korean Short Rib: the short rib was tender with good flavor. I just wish they would put more of it on the plate! The noodles were cooked well and not soggy. If this is on the menu, I believe they only have it on Fridays? Also, I would only order this as dine-in since the noodles will definitely stick together by the time you get home. Da Mento "Fuckin" Bento: This one is my favorite so far, although it is a lot of food! The Guava chili pepper chicken, lollipop shrimp and fish jun were all crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The beef was tasty, easy to cut and had a good amount of glaze on top of it. Lastly, you can't have a bento without a slice of spam and hot dog! On Fridays they sell Butter Mochi, Stuffed Mochi, and other desserts from kksweets. Sometimes this place is a full house, but you can always order to-go and eat in the food court. I also noticed the music is kind of loud in the restaurant. Located in the Durango hotel and casino food court. Honestly the quality is maybe on par to an L&L or outside Hawaiian grill. Unless you're too lazy to leave the hotel, then I'd recommend going elsewhere for some island grub, especially for the price. Still solid quantities in the food, I got the shrimp plate and it's not bad at all. But wouldn't make a trip out to eat here is all. read more
