Best Irish pub !!! Went in for dinner on a Saturday night. Parking lot seemed full but we were surprised when we went in it was not crowded. It was definitely busy for a Saturday night but they were very good about getting us sat within a few minutes. We asked our waitress about the parking lot and she told us there was a function going on in their "Camelot" building next door. Our waitress, Tiffany, was very knowledgeable and super friendly. We both got the fish n chips with the side order of Shepard pie and it was divine. Large beer selection and the atmosphere was super interesting. Really enjoyed our burgers, ambiance, and service. It was clean, fun, cozy, and the food was just what we hoped it would be. Served good and hot, and it was very tasty. I ordered the boiled plate. Corned beef with carrots, potato, turnips and cabbage. The cabbage was a bit under cooked for me. I like it soft not crunchy. Corned beef had too much fat on top. I usually skim it off when preparing at home. I might try again but they have a lot of other interesting meals I might try. My friend ordered the beef stew in a bread bowl. They said it was excellent. But we both agreed the live music was WAY TO LOUD. We were shouting at each other to be heard. When we asked the waitress about it she said it's due to it being in the old church and it vibrates. Well have them lower their amps. Not sure we will be back due to that. Not sure how often they have live music, we were there on a Friday night around 6:30. If you are looking for a quiet date night place - this isn't it unless you don't want to talk with your date. Interesting atmosphere in a former church converted into an Irish pub. Server was attentive and food was served in a reasonable time. For the most part the food was good. The reuben rolls were delicious. Nice and crispy with panko topping and tender corned beef inside. The fish and chips and the cole slaw that came with them were amazing. We love that they are beer battered, not merely breaded. The corned beef and cabbage dinner was disappointing. The potatoes, carrots, turnips, and cabbage were okay but lacked flavor. The biggest disappointment was the quality of the corned beef. A generous portion was served but most of it was inedible. There was a huge amount of fat and the meat that surrounded it was so tough that it couldn't be cut with a knife. I had to pick off the few tender pieces with my fingers and most of the cut went into the trash. I would try Holy Grail again but would order something else next time. read more

BEWARE: although the food and the service are quite good, the noise is very, very loud. I have found this the few times I've been there. Last night was probably the last time I'll go until the restaurant installs noise mitigating panels to absorb sound. Headed back to Manchester airport from a couple of days in Portsmouth. We were going to eat in Portsmouth but nothing was striking our fancy. On the way back we decided to stop in Epping to see what was available. After a quick google search, we landed on Holy Grail. The place was packed & vibrant. It was tough to land on choices as the menu was fairly loaded with interesting dishes. I liked how the items were not sorted by any measure...just listed almost randomly. It made the choice adventurous. My wife had the Harvest Sauté with turkey for a protein. She said it was well prepared. Most of the items were al dente with the exception of the sweet potato which obviously needed to be cooked. She especially liked the kale preparation and the fact that everything soaked up the wonderful sauce. I stayed simple with the French Onion Soup. There was so much more to choose. Unique eatery in a converted church. Beautiful building and pretty decor. Great beer selection. The food was good but not amazing. We ordered a scotch egg that was flavorful but a bit over done. I ordered the baked haddock and really wished I'd gone with something else. That being said my side of the shepherd's pie was delicious. I've been to the Holy Grail twice, once for lunch and once for dinner. Food and beer offerings are substantial. Even when it's been busy, the service has been good. On one of my outings, one of my party was allergic to seafood, which is a problem when food is cooked in the same oil used for fried seafood. Although we opted for an alternate to French fries, the waitress went out of her way to determine that we could have ordered the fries to be oven baked and would have taken an extra 10 minutes to get our food. BOSS: Wow!!! It's a church converted into a bar and restaurant! Nice!!!! ME: Tada!!!! REVIEW: I've wanted to try out The Holy Grail Food & Spirits since they opened six weeks ago. The old St. Joseph Church (built 1896) was recently converted into a restaurant and bar by the Kennedy family. The bar is in the center floor, surrounded by tables and pew-like booths, colorful stained glass windows (natural light shining from the outside), high arched ceilings, flat screen TVs, and a large mural with the noise was echoing throughout the place. There's also an upstairs area with additional seating. Live entertainment plays near the bar. We sat up at the bar and we were given menus which was limited and offered appetizers, soups, salads, sandwiches, and dinner entrees (English & Irish dishes). The beer selection (imported & domestic) was very impressive with around 40 draft beers and 25 bottled beers (during this 07/2008 visit). Running the bar, David (co-owner) offered us samples of beer to try out. A few of the beers on tap included Sam's Seasonal, Newcastle, Smithwick's, Smuttynose, Guinness, Allagash White Ale, Bass, Dogfish Head, Strongbow, English Pale Ale, & more. We sampled the Python's Holy Grail Ale and Tennent's Lager (Scotland), which were easy to drink and my boss ordered both of them ($5.25 each 20oz glass). However, I stuck with a Diet Coke ($1.75 with refills) since I was driving. For starters, we shared Drunken Mushrooms ($6.95-portobello & domestic mushrooms deep fried in beer batter, served with ranch dressing) and Fish Cakes ($9.95-2 pan-seared blend of whitefish, vegetables, herbs, & bread crumbs cakes served with a creamy dense Irish slaw & tartar sauce), which were both very good. For dinner, the boss ordered the Shepherd's Pie ($10.95-a blend of ground beef, onions, vegetables, gravy & herbs, topped with mashed potatoes) served with fresh beans & carrots, which was very tasty, better than at many places we've been to. There was also no niblet corn in this dish. I enjoyed the Bangers & Mash ($9.95-5 Irish sausages served with mashed potatoes, gravy, & Colman's Mustard), which was very filling and hearty like I expected. David checked up on us often asking us how the food was and gave me refills on Diet Coke and reorders on beer. We skipped dessert since we had to get back to the office. I chugged down my Diet Coke before I left as David chanted "Chug! Chug! Chug!" I miss those college years of chugging down cheap Honey Brown! Overall, the atmosphere was very unique and interesting, having food and drinks inside an old church was pretty cool! The service was friendly, attentive and informative. We were impressed by the beer selection offered here. However, at the time of this review, the current food menu was limited, but the food we had was very good and delish! The boss (a single man) wants to come back here on a different night to see if the bar scene and type of crowd is younger, since the place was filled with lots of gray on a Wednesday evening. BOSS: If I'm going to enjoy my $5.25 beer, I would hope there would be some younger women around. My folks have always said: Go to Church to meet women, but I don't think they meant at this kind of Church, which is really a bar. This was our first time here and it was awesome this place is an old church it's just so cool I love the decor!! The food was great not one bad thing no complaints. My husband and I sat at the bar and the Bar Maid was so nice and really on top of it all, our drinks were ready before I asked for another one. We started with appetizers we had the fried calamari which by the way it was served differently as we normally had in the past. These calamari was fried perfectly and it was topped with shaved Asiago cheese omg it was awesome. We also had the sampler which had Scottish eggs, onion rings and short ribs it was so good!!! The ribs was so tender fell off the bone yum ness!!! Crunchy onions and the eggs was really good. Omg you guys we shared the shepherds pie dinner so so so amazing! Second time eating here; it was a Tuesday night and the place was pretty quiet. Consequently the service was very good, with the waitress being very friendly and attentive without being overbearing. I had calamari in batter with a chipotle sauce to start, which would actually have done as a main course as the portion size was enormous. The calamari was perfectly cooked - not rubbery at all. I had to ask for a doggie bag after eating half of it, otherwise I'd never have made it to the main offering of swordfish on a lobster and crab risotto. This was equally humongous in size, particularly the swordfish steak; but I managed to just finish the swordfish before admitting defeat, and there was still plenty of risotto left - can we have another doggie bag please? This place is FREEZING in the winter. I understand that the windows are historical but placing beanbags in front of them doesn't help at all. It is not ideal to have to eat with your jacket on. We typically are in here after a UNH hockey game so towards the end of the night. More potential than not I find the temperature of the food to be incorrect. Too cold, not cooked through. Soup is a perfect example of this. I find the meat that is used for the Ruben to be more salty than most places and overly fatty. I have gone to other dishes after several instances as stated above. Good late night go to place but it is not tops of my listed when variety is available during peak hours. read more

My friend had the three cheese pasta loved it the two females had salad with chicken on top loved it. And now I am 3/4 Irish and 1/4 Scott so I feel fairly comfortable critiquing this food. I also like to cook. I had the Guinness stew for appetizer. This was over the moon delicious five star probably the best I have had in New England. I would love the recipe to make it for my family. The meat was tender but more importantly the broth was full of flavor and great tasting. I then ordered the shepherds pie and it just did not work for me just seem to be Hamburg under mashed potatoes and have a very little taste. I did try applying some salt and pepper No change. My family and I went in for a New Year's Eve lunch. It was sub par at best. The waitress was full of attitude and to top it off my mother's fish and chips was cold. My husband and I planned to share a bowl of seafood chowder. I took one bite and thought it was terrible and way too salty so I didn't eat anymore of it. My husband finished it. About an hour or two after returning home my husband became VIOLENTLY ILL...FOOD POISONING! He threw up consistently until 4am! It's has a really cool feel. Irish decor everywhere you look. The place looks a little tired not too bad but for what it is could be kept up better. The food is good and average. Nothing blew me away. The drinks were again average. It was warm outside but very uncomfortable inside. Keeping in mind it is a family style restaurant I guess all they were lacking were coupons . Went there last night Sat. 4/23/22. I ordered a Reuben Sandwich , came out with fries ordered it with coleslaw. Toasted rye bread was burnt , there was twice as much sauerkraut as corned beef (a few slices that were grilled) and no swiss cheese.
