Came here on a Friday night and wow -- it exceeded my expectations! The sushi rolls were incredibly fresh, flavorful, and beautifully crafted. Each hand roll felt like its own masterpiece. We ordered about 12 hand rolls (at $5 each!) and every single one was so good -- not a miss in the bunch. The drinks? Oh man, good to the last drop! We tried the Spicy Go Go, Tamarindo, and Jungle Bird -- all were perfectly balanced and full of flavor. The Chef and Bartender were both super friendly and welcoming. He even mentioned they'll have oysters coming in January and February -- so I'll definitely be back for that! If you haven't been yet, Holy Spirits is a must-visit. Holy spirits has got to be one of my favorite hidden gems in sac. Located right next to lowbrau in a busy area, but often overlooked. Went on a Saturday night, so we were able to get delicious options from the sushi chef, like the seafood nachos and the hand roll set. Omg the seafood nachos were AMAZING! Highly recommend! Really nicely decorated inside, perfect for date night. Only downside is that a lot of the menu wasn't available. I guess they're switching management but a new menu should be coming out soon. Damn do these people know how to make a good cocktail. This place was packed and reservations are recommended for each evening. My friend and I managed to snag seats at the bar. We were in the mood for some light sushi bites and a craft cocktail so decided to check out Holy Spirits based on the great reviews. This little gem hit all the marks for me! It was a little hard to find but is right next door to Lowbrau, in fact they share the same restrooms and a common middle door. The first thing I noticed was the ambiance, loved the lighting and whole vibe. We were greeted warmly by the bartender, Jacob, who was great, friendly and offered suggestions since it was our first time here. From the drink menu I chose the Jungle Bird and absolutely loved this cocktail. For bites, we chose the 3 handroll set which consisted of salmon, crab and spicy tuna. These handrolls were the bomb and made with love! My husband asked if they had a spicy mayo and the chef literally made it for us from scratch right there...the best spicy mayo I've ever had. We also had the Foil Steamed Mushrooms which was suggested by Jacob and OMG. I could go back and eat these everyday. The Beech mushrooms were cooked in a broth type of liquid composed of garlic, sake, butter and soy sauce. I think I could have just drank the stuff, it was that good. The good - they have Wednesday all-day HH = $5 hand rolls, discounted sake and $3 off signature house cocktails. The hand rolls were also pretty good - rice and fish quality were good but wish the seaweed had a bit more crisp! The hubs and a couple of friends came right before the holidays to finally see Chef Lou on a sushi night. K street was weirdly quite, but I assume it was because of the impending holiday. Holy Spirits is connected to Low Brau next door. So you can hear the loud music blaring from over there. It's a tad annoying, but I guess it was fine mostly. It's a good spot for a quite dinner, if you find a better spot - I think we were right in front of the door. The waitstaff is pretty chill, and every drink we had was delicious. I love something with egg white - gives it a good creamy texture. If you have trouble deciding, the wait staff is happy to recommend something! It was kind of cool to see Pappy on the menu too. I was tempted to try it, but I decided not to. I will one of these days! Since I probably will never want to buy a bottle, getting the drink here would be ideal. I loved the sushi! Holy Spirits serves up an extensive menu of cocktails, is a bottle shop, and now serves up sushi & handrolls (by Chef Lou)! They're located on 20th Street next to Low Brau. I'd heard about Holy Spirits having different chefs in pop-up events but I finally made the trek out with a friend on a Thursday night. The interior of Holy Spirits is dark and cozy. Immediately, you notice the beautiful bar and a small kitchen behind a wall of glass. There are only a few tables so they're better for tables of 2 and 4 people. And, I don't know if it was only on that night we visited but the goth music in the background really added to the ambience. My friend and I tried a couple of their cocktails: Buddha's Paradise (Sazerac Rye, Peach, Lemon, Sour Cherry White Tea, Ginger) and Hella Quack (Duck Fat Washed Knob Creek Rye, Sugar, Peychoud's, Absinthe). Both were juicy and smooth. We also tried several handrolls (salmon, crab, and spicy tuna), Seafood Nachoes, and Albacore/Octopus Carpaccio. Wow, we were blown away by the quality of the food. The fish was fresh and flavorful. And the sushi rice in the handrolls was amazing. Since it's just Chef Lou knocking out all of the dishes and delivering them to the tables, it's not an establishment for those in a hurry. We, however, didn't mind. Holy Spirits does automatically add a 15% tip to every bill. Be forewarned so you don't accidentally double-tip! read more

We snagged a reservation for 8 PM but there were plenty of walk in tables available. Our server said they were slammed on Friday and we picked a good time for a chill evening. Doing dry January - hate it. Opted for a delicious grown-up Shirley Temple that the bartender made with Luxardo cherries and syrup. My date opted for the same because he is adorably respectful of my commitment to the driest of Jan's. Food -Secret Shrimp - always, always get this for your table. The combo of sauces and the perfectly crisp shrimp. To die for! -Sunomono Salad - very refreshing and simple. Nice palate cleanser btwn dishes. -Karaage - good but was the least favorite dish of the night. Prob didn't help that my date encouraged a first bite when it was boiling lava hot. Haha -Hand Rolls - Salmon & Negi Hama - both super yummy. Would be better tapered at the end because it kind of falls apart by the last bite. I think the loose roll affords more filling tho. Worth the trade off. We sat at the table closest to the chef cage (as I call it). So fun watching Lou whip up the various plates. Got to chat with him a bit too. Much needed GNO! We stumbled upon Holy Spirits while bar hopping and it did not disappoint! As soon as we walked in, the server/hostess greeted us with a very warm welcome and sat us immediately. It was a Friday night at around 9pm. We ordered a round of drinks and some appetizers to snack on. I'm not a huge fan of Japanese whisky/liquor (which is a main focus of this bar/restaurant), so opted to get the Desert Flower which had mezcal in it - good but not my fave. BUT OMG THE FOOD. WOW. We ordered the albacore carpaccio, mushrooms and hand roll set of 3. Everything was so fresh and incredible!! You MUST get the spicy tuna hand roll. Stopped in around 9:30 PM on Friday, October 11 while visiting Sacramento. What enticed us about Holy Spirits was the extensive cocktail menu. When we arrived, we were told that the kitchen was closed, which was fine since we had dinner elsewhere. We ordered the Matsoluma and Holy Negroni. Both drinks were really tasty and flavorful, and the bartenders were friendly. I noticed that drinks weren't placed on napkins or coasters. I'm giving this place a 4 because the music from LowBrau was obnoxiously loud, which ruined what should have been a really cool vibe. Also, and this is minor, but the lighting at the bar was way too harsh. Be aware that they add an automatic 15 percent gratuity, which I didn't notice until my date called it out. I'd go back to have more cocktails and try the food, but definitely not on a weekend or whenever there is an event going on next door. read more

I really wanted to love this place and while I did enjoy it, it just wasn't what I expected. First off, it's in the spot of the old Block Butcher Bar, instead of meats in the fridge and and hanging from the walls of the glass room it's all lined with swanky booze now. It is small and intimate spot. They have a few barstools, 4 small tables along the wall and one larger table in the corner by the bathrooms. We came on a Friday night around 10pm and there were maybe 8 people in there so we were able to sit immediately. We actually sat ourselves at one of the 2 open tables available and they were both dirty. One still had used plates and utensils on it while the other had nothing on it but was sticky from a spilled drink. We browsed the menu and while it was large, most of their craft cocktails seemed to be whiskey focused. I think I remember seeing only 1-2 vodka based drinks. I opted for the Hex Girl which was one of the vodka based drinks and my husband got their Mexican Lager. The Hex Girl had muddled strawberries in it but it tasted like banana. While the first few sips were good, the aftertaste wasn't. My husband did enjoy their recommendation for the Mexican lager though. Some gripes to point out, it is connected to Lowbrau. There is a center panel that is opened up and you walk through it and your in lowbrau, so the loud DJ music blasts into Holy Spirts. This throws off the whole aesthetic of the dark and intimate vibe of holy spirits. The bathrooms are also shared, so there are plastered club goers puking in the stalls. Holy spirits throws out a high end crafted cocktail experience but it doesn't work well being connected to lowbrau in my opinion. It's just 2 completely different vibes. Their hours posted on Yelp might not be 100% accurate. I've tried coming twice during the posted hours for a weekday and they were closed. The pros though, while boasting a high end drink menu, their craft cocktails weren't too badly priced. Most ranged from $14-16 with only 2 drinks being $20+. Shots however can be very pricey because they offer some high end alcohol. Service was great. The initial bartender was personable and let us know he was working on 5 drinks and would come check on us once done. He instead grabbed another girl to send our way so we weren't waiting too long. Her drink recommendations were appreciated as well. Food did look delicious but we did not try any so I can't talk about that, unfortunately. Overall, this place has potential I just really feel the whole lowbrau situation kills it. Will we be back? Maybe. I wouldn't mind trying the food but I would have to be earlier in the night versus a late night meal to avoid the crowd and loudness of next door. read more

Located right next to Lowbrau, Holy Spirit is serving up delicious craft cocktails and drinks and they have a lot of variety. I heard they've been open to the public for a few days now, so we came at the perfect time before this hidden gem is discovered by a lot more people. There's a great menu with wine, beer and spirit options and there are some rarer items available too. We peeped the Pappy's on the top shelf and while $55 a shot was a bit rich for our blood, we were happy to see it available. You'll also find charcuterie available which was pretty tasty. We opted for the bartender to surprise us with drinks and we each ended up with two very different rum concoctions. Both were very good, one sweeter and one spirit forward. The bartenders are amazing and I'm excited to try more of their creations on future visits. There's a great ambiance in Holy Spirit as well, it's darker with mood lighting (even when it's bright outside) and there are plenty of smaller tables available as well as bar seating. The music was pretty loud while we were there so you'll want to sit close to your friends to talk, but it also means other people won't overhear you easily, so you can dish all the gossip over cocktails.
