The showroom sells unique, vintage and/or decorator pieces. Many are gently used or overstock from decorators. Items have to be submitted before they are accepted by staff to be sold on the showroom floor. All accepted items are clean and in good condition. Great place to find home and fashion accessories. I realize consignment stock will vary and there will always be a luck of the draw element. Took a long trip to try our luck here as we had been very happy with our previous purchase. There really was nothing of interest. I was looking for nightstands, sofa table and dining room chairs. Nada, nada, nada. Got a good whack on my head trying to look at a table wedged under a bunk bed. Jewelry cases were completely empty. They have nice jewelry but don't have any jewelry sized or worked on by them. The salesperson, Kim, quoted me $75 to size a gold ring down that was purchased from her and then when I picked it up, it was $150. She said that the second jeweler that sized the ring charged more. but she didn't ask for my authorization for the higher price before proceeding. When I asked her to split the difference, she said he actually charged more but she wasn't making me pay all of it. Then I asked what he charged, and then the other woman came over and said it was $110. So she was trying to charge me $150, twice what she quoted me when he charged them $110??? Then they charged sales tax, which is not supposed to be paid for a service. I don't like to be lied to and will not be returning and have told my friends the sketchy story. For reference, I recently had a platinum ring sized UP (requiring more platinum) and it was $70. read more

I used to love this place! Rude boss at the jewelry counter-who thinks she is better than! her customers- making it a throughly unpleasant experience, not fun! There really is no excuse to be not elegant in an elegant part of the store, or hot and cold snarky; your job is to help people no? or is it to feel put upon by the public? you are in customer service at least pretend like you care about yr customers, even though maybe you don't. I like their new location in the same shopping center as Ross in San Rafael. One of the reasons is because there is plenty of parking now. They have plenty of inventory and a jewelry counter when you first walk in. I have checked out the jewelry and I must say there are some beautiful pieces that are worth checking out. I had a great experience consigning some items recently. A few employees assisted and they were all friendly and helpful. Some of the items I consigned were two small lamps, a fountain, and a magazine rack. They all sold fairly quickly which was really nice. The price point of the items are on the higher end, but it is worth it because of the quality. We found a nightstand for my husband that was made of real wood. I highly recommend stopping by before buying something online especially furniture. read more

I walked in with my dog who is an excellent social citizen. A woman who worked there walked between a piece of furniture and my dog. Creating a A tight spot and my dog hopped on a white sofa. Where she left some paw dust prints on the sofa. She brushed it off abruptly trying to shame me and I apologized. She also did this in front of another customer. She never looked back at me, said don't worry it's ok or never made eye contact. As I left I said we'll leave so you don't have to worry about us. Also you lost a sale. this place is a total scam--they accept the items from photo, then another person inspects them when they arrive then charge you a very high amount of money when they take them and then call you later and say they are not in good enough condition. also they said they could take the mattress if it was in good condition--and the person who came to the house said they have not taken matresses since covid! a girlfriend once related to me a conversation about boyfriends she had over lunch with a confidant during which she had been asked what it was like to live with me. "lots of sx, not much furniture" was her answer. however true that is or was, the point here concerns the order of importance i place on such domestic issues. to address the latter of these two, functionally very different, needs the furniture consignment store in its previous location in corte madera had been my go-to source for years. this is where i came for whatever someone worthy of being kept happy said that i simply had to have. to me this only meant adding yet another thing to fill my house with. I could only wonder why because I have things to sit on or at, to hold or support plates of food or piles of books or odd little geegaws or whatever else people fill up their living spaces with. meanwhile, of all the various places i've called "home" my favorite is still my 3500 square foot industrial loft in soho, filled mostly with air. the only downside about it was that during certain months of the year the air was mostly cold air. so it came as a bit of a shock to me when i returned to this business recently, now a seller rather than buyer, and to its new location. as to the latter, it's in a more easily accessible spot. but as for the merchandise, this is quite different, as well are members of the sales staff. i suppose if you like furniture, especially furniture on the cheap, what's for sale now is a cut above the older format. fewer things here now that you might just as easily buy at home depot, like large planter pots or workbenches. and for those who want what passes for quality or at least insofar as that means lacking dents and scrapes, the stuff here is in better condition. but gone are the truly interesting, or especially those potentially weird items that looked like they actually came out of someone's grandparents' attic or basement, like those lifesize totem poles which i made the mistake of never buying. so yeah, it's ok for used furniture of slightly better quality than the cardboard stuff you live with at a cheap motel. but it's boring, much like the noodle or potato or deviled egg offerings you'd find on a potluck picnic table. as to the staff, this is certainly in keeping with the change in merchandise: all seem to walk around as though they're doing you a favor speaking to you. hey, ladies (for the most part, just saying), this ain't tiffany's you're working at (actually, my experience at tiffany's is those people really play it down-to-earth. when you're selling tiffany's stuff, pretention and attitude don't help so no need to put on like you're selling high end stuff because that's what you're actually doing. but this is the other extreme where attitude really isn't a good look for you, because all you're doing is selling cheap used furniture). anyway, the sharp-eyed old crone who has the final say turned me down selling my chairs, as there was a scratch here and there. so instead i put them out on the corner near my house in an embarrassingly upscale sausalito 'hood, hawked with a hand-scrawled sign that read "FREE STUFF!!". within an hour they were gone. as for how to address the greater of those two priorities under discussion, in event you forgot there were in fact two... well, you really didn't need me to explain that one, right? read more

I sort of like this place and will likely continue coming back. I have found great pieces of jewelry and furniture at pretty reasonable prices given it's all on consignment. That being said, the customer service is absolutely horrific, especially at the jewelry counter. The sales people are not friendly (unless you are their personal friend who they wait on immediately even if others have been waiting to be helped) and are extremely judgmental (think Pretty Woman and the iconic scene where Julia Roberts' character asks, "Do you work on commission?...Big mistake. Huge!"). For example, I asked to see a piece of jewelry, and the woman that was helping me refused to take the piece out of the case for my examination, instead exclaiming "Wow, you picked the most expensive thing in the store!" I had to have the person I was with ask sternly to see them on my behalf, and it was only then that the lady helped me. This is not the only time I have been treated this way at this store. It is really disappointing to be treated unfairly and judged based on who knows what when you are simply browsing a store. One would think that if a customer expresses visible interest in buying something, the sales people would be excited to help and see a successful sale - but alas, that does not happen here. And it's actually sad that the people who work here are not pleasant/kind/helpful, because they really do have great stuff. read more

I have bought and sold here, jewelry and furnishings. I love them! As for the jewelry ladies, they are knowledgeable and friendly, one has become a personal friend. No pressure tactics. And yes, they get really busy. They can't have multiple people trying on jewelry at the same time, it's a security issue, so if you have to wait, just take a stroll around the store. The deals are real. I bought a $2600 pendant and then had it appraised by the maker, it retails for $7500. All merch changes there quickly, lots of stagers come in and buy the very best stuff right away, so you have to visit often, and prices get marked down when stuff sits too long. I saw an amazing, expensive coffee table for a friend that was perfect, it had been marked down several times, we went back the next day, it was gone. It had sat too long and was sent off to St. Vincent de Paul (consigner didn't want it back), so they told us where to go, and we got it for $70. To me, that's excellent service, above and beyond. They do supplement with some inexpensive furniture they purchase. Last time I checked, they have a "test drive" option. You can take an item (furniture, not jewelry) home, they have your credit card on hold, and if you don't like it, you can bring it back within the designated timeframe, so you don't get stuck with a dud. When you're buying used furniture, it's up to the buyer to inspect everything carefully.. They have several stores, and each one caters to the demographics of the area... that said, come back tomorrow, and you'll see something different! The negative reviews are absurd. Like, complaining about the price of delivery? They don't deliver! They have a couple of delivery guys who have business cards there. Not getting help? How busy is the store, and how many people are working that day? Wait your turn! That said, I've never, ever had a problem getting help or had to wait. You can't know what kind of a day someone's having, so if you got any attitude, perhaps they've been dealing with unpleasant customers that day, like some of these reviewers. I still need a couple of pieces of furniture, I go by there all the time. Bummer for the stager that someone made a mistake. Unfortunately these things will happen, but I'm guessing everything else she bought was a haul and a deal! I was really hesitant to write a negative review but after at least half a dozen chances for this store to redeem themselves, today was the final straw. I think the store's inventory is great and that's why I continue to purchase from it. However, the customer service at this location is zero zero zero stars. It is the worst I have experienced in all my retail interactions. Never ONCE has anyone greeted me upon entry or exit. The staff is unapproachable and unfriendly in person. Via email, I wrote twice about consigning items and never heard back. And today, when inquiring about a product via phone, the woman literally said "We are really busy right now and I can't get you that information." Ummmmm, what?! Not a "can i take your number and call you back" or "let me put you on a brief hold and find someone who can assist you". I get that the store flourishes on purchases alone, but this sort of service is the reason why grumpy patrons exist. I really hope management of this location will take these reviews to heart and work with the team there. If the customer service is a reflection of the store's management, then upper management really needs to look at who it hires as leaders for their company/brand. read more

This is why i love yelp so I can inform others about poor business practices. This place has decent furniture and seems fair but is a total Rip off on delivery. The parties they use (in my case "Robin's relocation") blatantly lie about how long it takes to load the vehicle at the warehouse, like we are idiots. This is straight up fraud and insulting - I know its doesn't take an hour to load a table and 4 chairs that took you 5 minutes to unload even including drive time. Of course, you only get the bill after they have already delivered it into your home. In hindsight I should have refused to pay that amount so that is on me. That moment of weakness (as at the time i was happy to finally have a table) has had me steamed about this for weeks. At first I hesitated to write a review of this store, since they use a 3rd party contractor but now that I learned from neighbors others had the EXACT SAME experience, so here I am. I feel much better now - if I saved anyone reading this some money from this ripoff, the extra $75 extra I paid was money well spent. read more

Needed a sofa bed and shopped here. Found one that looked good and let my daughter try it for comfort, as it was for her. Later, it turned out to be too big. Ok. My bad. Paid $800. for it. Now trying to sell it to buy a smaller one. Folks who came to buy it discovered structural damage with a quick, inadequate repair that had broken. Obvious someone had done slap-dash repair, which is why it broke after repair. Home Consignment has a right to sell something, Caveat Emptor, let the buyer beware. This review is for the Bellam St store. Terrible customer service! I came in on a Sunday looking for some stools. I found a set of two, but wanted to see if it was the right height, so I asked if they can hold it for me, so I could go home and measure. The male salesperson said yes, they can hold it for 24 hours. It was about 4:30 in the afternoon. I told them I would call them back tomorrow, and gave them my name. He did not ask for a phone number or anything else. So I called the next day at about 1:30 pm, less than 24 hours, and I was told the stools were SOLD!! I spoke to the same sales person... he said he thought the man was picking it up for me. I said 'So anyone can come in and pretend they're picking up an item for someone, and you let them ?!! I was so upset because I really wanted the stools. It's terrible that they sold my stools without even checking....or they should have asked for a phone number, or given me a ticket! I suggested those things, but all he could say is , "ITs too much trouble." So, if you find something you like, don't let them HOLD it because there's no guarantee.....they could sell the item !!!! Treated very rudely by the staff. Was in the process of purchasing a couch, was going out to my vehicle to measure if it would fit. Employee came up and locked the main door while I was inside - preventing me from getting out. Explained to me that door was closed for the day and I would have to use the side door all the way across the store. This was at approximately 5:50, 10 minutes before closing. This is my go to place for furniture whenever I need something great. My cousin has consigned a few items as well. We looked on all the websites for a dining room table, however nothing was quite right. So I knew to go here and check it out. Every time I go in I find something I really like. This time was no different. We found a solid wood dining room table as well as four chairs for a great price. When we got it home it was even better. Fit right in to our home. The staff are always helpful and the retail prices are listed. I went back after and found an amazing cabinet. It was iron with glass windows. Today I stopped into their canal location, with my mother, to find a chair. I kid you not when I say, not one employee opened their mouth to say hello, can I help you, nothing. I am in the design and staging business, and I occasionally sell and purchase items here. There is one staff member who is consistently rude and has attitude. I hadn't seen her in a while, and I was hoping she no longer worked there. She one messed up on a large order I was purchasing for a client of mine. I had several items I was purchasing i walked around with her and showed her and she was taking notes and she missed a key piece that I was clear I wanted to purchase. When I had the moving company pick up the items, I noticed that piece was missing. I went to the store and spoke to her and she didn't even seem to care and told me to look for something else to purchase. I didn't go for awhile after that but more recently started going again and selling items. I brought a truck load of items I wanted to consign and she was helping someone else, I asked if there was anyone else who could help and she told me everyone was busy and I would have to wait awhile. Sure, it's like any consignment store where it can be a hit or miss but this location is very high volume and has new items daily. As soon as this place opens in the morning, this place gets really busy and people are on a hunt for whatever they're looking for. I've gotten a few great furniture pieces from here at a very reasonable price. What I love the most about this place is they allow you to try the furniture piece out for 24 hours. That way you can bring it home to see if the piece works or looks good with your existing decor. If you like it, they'll charge your card after 24 hours. If you don't like it, you have until the next day to return it and you won't be charged. Overall, this is a great way to find high-end furniture at a fraction of the cost. This place is not right. I've really enjoyed being back in Marin, but this place made me feel like I had wandered into Fresno (or worse) and I had to pinch myself to be sure I wasn't having a walking nightmare! My girlfriend and I (two young white lesbians, FYI) decided to buy a couple simple chairs. We perused the merchandise (mostly chinese made new reproduction furniture and a few antiques) and stopped at the counter to ask a question and buy the chairs. The older manager fellow flat out ignored our question and then engaged in a loud conversation with a younger handsome guy standing beside us (it was not work related - mostly flirtatious talk). We couldn't believe he would so brusquely brush us aside. We walked around to the other corner of the counter and a young girl salesgirl wearing what could only be described as pajamas (how can people wear their pajamas to work?) was playing on her phone. We interrupted her and were told they were closed (actually they were open for another 20 minutes!). We made a joke that maybe she was the daughter of the rude manager guy... Anyhow, we made the decision to not buy anything there (not today and not ever) and to write a yelp review eventually about our experience. Then it got worse. We walked toward the back door which was open. There was a truck outside unloading some things - we may as well take a look. It was then that the manager guy walked beside us quickly (WAY closer to us than he needed to be) and then kind of huffed, like he was upset or something. He walked outside the door and started smoking a cigarette (GROSS!) and then began to wander with really weird energy around the parking lot. We were a bit triggered by his energy (and we aren't snowflakes, trust me). Apparently other people inside noticed this strange interaction because two other girls (they were older) behind the counter stopped us to say sorry and that we should come back on Tuesday. Why Tuesday, we asked. She replied in some sort of strange accent, He doesn't work on Tuesday. A lot of people only come on Tuesday when he is not around.... These women seemed scared. We joked that we should have asked her to blink twice if we should call the authorities to rescue her.... In any case, we are not coming back on Tuesday. Not Tuesday. Not any day. They are pricing items much higher now for some reason. The damage to most pieces adds cost just to have it repaired and the interesting thing is, they won't accept items with damage so most of it is their handling. Lots marked sold is getting damaged sitting there. Careless staff. Better off buying/selling on Craigs list or Marketplace. This WAS a great business. Beware of all new furniture. Beds not 1/2 as nice or the quality as the one we bought, selling for $4,000. We bought ours for only $600. Plus the furniture stores will take at least 6 months to deliver. I'm not saying that you can't find anything good here, just that I didn't. Most of it looked like it was from the homes of people not blessed with the home decorating gene. Or maybe they are now, thus the reason their former furnishings have wound up here. I did like the clay pots which littered the front area. I was also intrigued with the relatively cheap leather couches (new) sprinkled throughout the store. Other than that, no. The place is a disaster for anyone with claustrophobia or balance issues. Furnishings are everywhere and it's your job to wind your way in, out, and around. If you insist on coming here and find something you want, pretend you're in Hong Kong or Mexico and exercise your bargaining muscles; those marked prices are only a starting point. read more

This review is from a buyer's perspective. I just got a wonderful vintage piece of furniture for a symbolic price. Still can't believe my luck. A John Widdicomb sideboard, solid wood, unique design, perfect condition. The employees were great about marking it sold for me immediately after I said I'd claim it, and there are plenty of movers around who are on standby to help you with heavier items. We had a very smooth experience. This store is usually busy, and selection changes considerably every week. Note that this is not a place for cheap furniture per se; there are many items that are $500+, and they do gravitate towards premium pieces. read more

Who else remembers when this building was the Whole Earth Catalog store? Back in the 1970's it was a hippie version of Best Buy meets REI with a little IKEA on the side. God, that was a lifetime ago... I have bought and sold several pieces of furniture at this large and messy consignment business over the past ten years. Right now, November 2009, there's so much inventory on the floor you can barely walk between the items. The winding pathways are like an Ant Farm for humans. Some good quality items can be found if you visit frequently and use a sharp eye to sift the real goods from the crap. Also check out the jewlery section. There's some nice vintage pieces for sale, though the bargain prices of the furniture do NOT bleed over to the over priced jewlery cases. Nice people own and operate this biz. I just purchased a high quality french provincial desk for a lower price than any of the desks I tried to buy from several bi-polar Craigslist sellers over this past week. After casually mentioning several non-furniture items I'm attempting to sell, Melodie referred me to several local antique stores and vendors, giving me the pros and cons of each. She even provided contact info. I was so impressed with this unnecessary, but most welcome assistance.
