HESS is an excellent company to work with from start to finish. Our home often seemed drafty and energy bills high so we were curious to see what a home energy audit would reveal. After reviewing Pepco's list of audit companies, we selected HESS because of its good reviews. Scheduling an appointment was easy and we promptly received detailed information about the process and steps we needed to take before the inspection. Mohammed did the inspection. He explained everything to us, showed us where we were experiencing leaks and told us what he recommended. He was very knowledgeable, professional and friendly and he provided us with a written report very quickly. After reviewing the report, we had a number of questions that we emailed Mohammed and he responded quickly with answers. He also made himself available by phone to discuss other concerns. We decided to have the recommended work done as the recommendations made sense, we intend to stay in our home for many years and Pepco rebates covered almost half the cost. The work was extensive as we have 4 crawl spaces and 2 attics. Mohammed thought the work would take one day and on the scheduled day numerous workers arrived. They were all very friendly and professional and immediately took steps to ensure that the floors and furniture were properly protected and kept clean. The work took longer than expected so they returned a few days later (scheduled at our convenience) to complete the work. Let me start by saying that HESS is an amazing company and Mohammed is wonderful example of a real customer-oriented business should look like. I bought my very first house three years ago - it was build in mid 50th and even though it passed the home inspection it was painfully obvious that there is work and money investment that need to done both in the attic and in the crawl space - the house was incredibly drafty and it took a lot of HVAC's effort and energy to heat it up in winter and cool it down in summer. I got some estimates for insulation of both areas but the pricey were so exuberant that I put those project on a back burner. Until my friend told me about Mohammed and his company - they performed weatherization of her house and she was very happy. So I decided to give it a try. And I was more than satisfied! The whole process couldn't be any smoother. Energy consultant Mohammed El-Ghoul came on time and after short inspection suggested that we do need more specific HVAC audit, not whole home energy audit. Mohammed suggested a company which can do this, also made some very useful suggestions, and checked couple of things for free. We were not charged for service despite fact that Mohammed spent almost an hour at our home and provided useful advices. Recently, after many years we decided to treat our subbasement to help with the moldy smell that has effected the entire basement. After a renovation, the new section (subbasement) had a dank and moldy smell. Mohammed and his staff explained the process of encapsulation. The process was done professionally and the staff cleaned up perfectly. Within that day there is a noticeable difference in cleanliness and smell of the subbasement. I know the added benefit of energy savings will show up in the long term, but the immediate results are dramatic. The HESS group get my highest recommendation. One cold winter in my new 90 year old home was enough to convince me that it had lots of room for improvement in energy efficiency! I found HESS through yelp, cross referenced with angie's list (where they also have great reviews), and Mohammed came out to do a home energy audit. Mohammed did a very thorough job, asked all the right questions about what we were experiencing in our house, and came back with a comprehensive report on his recommendations for the most energy-saving improvements. In our case that meant sealing and insulating our attic and the creepy crawl space beneath the back of our house. The savings we could expect were clearly laid out, and everything he recommended made intuitive sense. He specifically recommended against uber-expensive upgrades like energy-efficient windows at this time, since there are so many other improvements we could make that have a shorter payback period and will improve our quality of life more, which I appreciated. (We also bought a new-used fridge at his recommendation, as it turns out that in addition to being ugly, our 30-year-old fridge was costing $200-$300 in energy every year!) We hired HESS to do the work, and Mohammed and his team did an awesome job. They arrived right on time, worked hard all day, did great work, and left without a trace of the usual construction debris. The tests Mohammed ran at the end of the day show that we can expect significant energy improvements, and I can't imagine how there wouldn't be - the house is clearly much better sealed and insulated than before. As other reviewers have mentioned, Pepco will pay for half of the cost of the improvements (with a credit on your bill), up to 2K. HESS is taking care the entire reimbursement process for us, which is awesome, and I'm excited to not pay an energy bill for next year+. Pepco subsidizes home energy audits at the cost of $100 to the homeowner (that is paid to the contractor). I selected HESS for this work. The initial report was amazing detailed, informative and professional. Based on the report, I contracted with HESS to undertake the two major energy-conservation upgrades: improving the attic space and improving the crawl space beneath the house. I was skeptical about undertaking the project, but the incredible amount of work that HESS performed showed that this was a great improvement project to undertake. The crew was supremely professional -- I've never seen so much plastic sheeting for protection in my life. They were here three days, and installed the sheeting every morning to protect the home, and removed it each evening as part of their clean up. Needless to say, they were super clean in their work. I was amazed how HESS was able to get around to all sorts of small spaces in seal up air penetration. Everything is super neat, tacked down, and the like. They obviously are proud of their craftsmanship. Follow up testing showed a nearly 50 percent improvement in stemming unnecessary air leakage from our home. This will reduce our energy consumption and makes our home more "green" for the future. We expect to receive a rebate on the work done through a PEPCO program ($2000 max). With the PEPCO rebate, the work still ended up costing a not insubstantial amount, but I am absolutely convinced it is worth it. There will be a pay-back overtime in reduced energy usage, but I also feel that the house is upgraded in terms of craftsmanship and its more "green" footprint. So, even though a lot of the work is out of sight, I receive the psychic benefit of knowing how good a job HESS did. Because this is something that pays back over time and PEPCO has the current rebate programs, I recommend that one undertake this kind of project sooner than later. You'll find Mohammed, who conducts the audits, to be a great guy and super professional. Juan, who is effectively the work supervisor, has more than a decade of experience in energy-conservation upgrades and he exudes professionalism and craftsmanship. Our new home had very little insulation. I called Mo based on a recommendation from a friend (I also read the Yelp reviews). We did the energy audit and Mo was very patient in walking me through all the recommended steps. As a first time homeowner, I really appreciated the detailed report and post-audit conversations to clarify the repairs needed & problem spots (penetrations, little to no insulation, and so forth). After signing up for the work, his crew showed up on time, did the work within 6-7 hours, and the insulation is now far better. We did a post-repair walk-through to make sure everything was in working order. Mo was patient in *again* explaining the repairs they did, the impact it will have, and the process moving forward to get the 50% rebate from Pepco. I cannot ask for more than this. Great experience with these guys. Got a very thorough and professionally presented energy audit. We were unable to take advantage of the weatherization deal at that time, but Mohammed was willing to honor the discounted quote later this year when we were finally able to free up the basement for their work. Their crew was prompt and professional, and despite that fact that they had several workers in the basement and the attic, bringing plenty of equipment in and out--including blowing insulation--they left our house clean and spotless when they were finished (it only took them about 5 hours to complete all the work--and there were many things). They explained exactly what we could expect, and made sure to preserve the drywall they had to remove so that whomever we hire to replace it won't have to buy new. I had always suspected that there was an issue with our house as far as energy efficiency, so when I was contacted by HESS to do an energy audit, I was skeptical, but the audit was very reasonable so I said why not. The audit turned out to more extensive than I thought. Very well done. The results were very clear and showed that we had a significant air leakage problem. The technician explained that the builder did not not insulate correctly and took some shorty cuts. He showed me the issues and gave me what I thought was a very reasonable proposal for the fixes. We agrees on a time. His crew showed up on time. They were very professional. They put up plastic over everything to protect our furniture. The job turned out to be much more than expected. He told me that he had made an oversight doing the estimate and that they would do the work without any additional charge. I really appreciated that since I have found that people that come in to work on your home always seemed to be looking for a way to up charge you. They completed the work. The house was drafty, and is now very comfortable. They take care of the paperwork for the rebates and when they finished, they cleaned up everything. I called Mohammed based off of the ridiculously high reviews on Yelp and I'm totally grateful I did. He is everything as advertised. I didn't know how energy inefficient my home was, but I could just feel air and money flying out of my windows. Over the phone, Mohammed advised that I get his Energy Audit for $100. Being a jaded consumer, I tried getting out of it thinking I was getting cheated out of money, but finally relented as it made sense for this audit to be done before Mo and his crew knew what needed to be fixed. To anyone who is on the fence about getting this audit done, do yourselves a favor and just do it. The audit report that Mo provided me was ridiculously detailed. Every line item that he recommended fixing was neatly organized with the cost and estimated yearly savings I could expect. Additionally, Mo was not pushy in the least about any of the fixes. With the energy audit, Mo also changed out twelve of my light bulbs to energy efficient ones, I got two brand new low flow shower heads to save on hot water, and he gave me an energy efficient power strip. In the end, I decided to do almost everything he recommended in the report. His crew came promptly when they said they would arrive and finished the work nearly exactly when they said it would be completed. They sealed my entire attic space and put in tons of new insulation and left my home exactly as they came. The completed work was very professionally done and I already feel much warmer throughout my house. The real test will come this winter, but I have no doubt in my mind that I will be saving a ton on my energy bills. A couple days ago, I received a follow up email from Mo with a detailed report on what work was completed, a final energy test to ensure correct sealing, and an estimated date on when I can expect my Pepco rebate (50% off of all work). Our home was built in 1989. While we took some steps toward a more energy efficient and snug home (replaced the original windows and doors, added insulation to the attic, installed a wood pellet stove, etc.), the house just never felt very warm and it has been especially noticeable in the last couple of years since the winters seem to be colder. I contacted HESS based on several positive reviews. Mohammed was my only contact, and I simply cannot give enough praise for his professionalism, expertise, and exceptional customer service. The entire experience - from the initial energy audit to the implementation of recommended improvements - was smooth and well organized. Mohammed was prompt and responsive during the initial contact and setting up the appointment for an audit. During the audit, he explained every testing procedure and pointed out every potential problem. He provided a range of recommendations, from quick fixes to more comprehensive solutions, but never pushed for a more expensive option or tried to unduly overemphasize solutions with questionable benefits. Two days after the audit, Mohammed provided a very detailed energy audit report in which he identified the problems and outlined his suggestions for improvements. This report was invaluable when it came to our "go-no go" decision on the project: once we understood where the energy efficiency gaps are, it was only logical to follow Mohammed's recommendations for implementing the solutions (most of which were fairly easy fixes). The working crew arrived two weeks later and completed the job within a day. The workers were courteous and efficient and completed everything within the scope of the contract, including: adding more insulation to the attic and in the basement, air sealing ducts lines and open chase, caulking around window frames, and sealing exposed areas in the attic. Mohammed performed the test-out assessment which showed a 30% improvement in our house's air leakage rate (a measure of energy efficiency). I have not seen our post-improvement energy bills yet, so I don't know how our energy costs have been affected, but the house is certainly warmer, cozier, and I think even quieter. Finally, an icing on the cake: we qualified for a rebate from Pepco which will cover about a third of our project cost, and Mohammed will handle the rebate process for us too. With ice dams backing water up into my kitchen ceiling and energy bills reaching $370 last March, I knew I needed to insulate my 39 year old home. I called Mohammed and he came to my home, did a blower test, walked around the house with an infrared gun to show me where I was losing energy, and created a detailed report. There was no high pressure to fix my leaks. Mohammed answered all my questions and explained patiently what his company could do to improve the comfort of my home during the winter months. Last Friday, Mohammed and his hard-working crew arrived at my home at 8am. With temperatures outside soaring into the high 90's and probably 140 degrees in my attic, this team insulated my house without a single complaint. They worked diligently until 6pm boxing in my 15 canned lights, caulking attic seams and foundation seams with an insulating foam, blowing insulation in both attic areas, and weather stripping two leaky doors. After the work was complete, they inspected my ceiling for nails that popped through and fixed them like new. To my amazement, they picked up the plastic they had put down to protect my carpets and vacuumed my house so no trace of insulation was left behind. Mohammed completed the paperwork for the BGE rebate of $2K and all I had to do was sign my name on the dotted line. An efficiency rating of greater than a 20% increase in efficiency was determined after the final blower test was complete. It was a pleasure working with HESS.
