Always a good night out. The mrs. and I were wrapping up a short date night at the toledo art museum, and wanted a quick bite and a beer. We went to Homeslice and had a very pleasant surprise of open mike comedy night. Unfortunately for the comedians it was a down night and the mrs. and I were one of 4 patrons in the bar. Fortunately for us, the comedians, food and beer were all top notch. I felt like we had our own private show and service. The bartender and staff were spot on with timing and recommendations. Updating my review. Love their pizza and am happy to see they are now delivering with DoorDash. However in this pandemic safety is paramount to me when choosing a restaurant. Even though our governor has a mask order in place and there's been one in place since restaurants could reopen for dine in, there have been two times I've been there in the past week where the employees were not wearing masks, they either didn't have them on or were below their chin. Went in last week for lunch and two employees, one being the cashier didn't have them on. Did take out tonight and while I like they have a take out window on the street, the employee who gave me my food didn't have a face covering on. I was not impressed with the flavor; and there was a misunderstanding in terms of my order; when I asked for a specialty pizza, Ordering an extra meat, I specified that the chicken be on the left side, and the pork be on the other side. Hands down the best pizza in the area. And their customer service is amazing: we ordered a Large white pizza and a Small Margarita pizza, and when our order arrive they had reversed them. It was no big deal, but not only did they knock half off the price of the pizza, they brought us a Free large white pizza to go! Amazing. Delicious pizzas! My favorite is the potato pizza (mashed potatoes with bacon and cheddar cheese). I never had anything like it before. There's a decent bar upstairs and a few booths downstairs. We've been absolutely treated to the best bartender in Toledo with Brian every time we go. Brian is quick witted, empathetic, and so personable you feel like your hometown friend is behind the bar serving you. He continuously creates an atmosphere catered to the patron he's serving, he is invaluable and irreplaceable and the only reason we are there every Tuesday and why we recommend Home Slice to everyone looking for somewhere to grab a drink and a slice in Toledo. Just went for the first time the other day and my boyfriend, my daughter and I LOVED it! So much so, we came back the next day! They have an upstairs dining area, where three bar and an additional patio is. Decent craft beers on draft. The second day we came the bartender made a pretty lazy Bloody Mary which kind of offended me bring a bartender and seeing how he wasn't busy. Girlfriend and I walked in and completed our to go order of one personal pizza at 11:45pm. Here we sit at 12:17, handed our pizza. Undercooked. We were told it would be 15 minutes after completing our order. Give or take 5 orders (ordered after ours) went upstairs while we waited. Also during this time we were asked if we ordered a white pizza (we didn't), and then were brought the wrong pizza on a pan for eat-in, which we advised was also not our pizza. The problem with this is the whole time we were there waiting while they skipped our order, not once did they explain that a mistake had occurred or at all gave a reason why we sat for over a half hour. Instead, we were given an undercooked pizza. Way to make things right guys! Just popped our half cooked pizza in the toaster oven back home, we'll finish it up for you. read more

The pizza here is very, very thin crusted and extra crispy on the edges. If you don't like very thin crust, you will not enjoy your pie. The hours are odd. Even though they are posted, the place sometimes is late opening or doesn't open at all. We've had better luck eating here between 8pm and midnight Wednesday through Saturday. You can buy a single slice or a whole pizza. It may be worth it to hang out for 10 minutes while they bake you a fresh pizza, rather than getting the one or two slices sitting in the hot box near the front window. I often get the feta/cheese bread which is just like a medium sized pizza with no sauce. You can get marinara sauce or ranch dressing ( I think) with it and it's super inexpensive, like $4-$5. Typically, I get several of the cheese breads rather than a pizza to feed a group. The cheese is pretty greasy, but if you're in the mood for a super thin crust pizza, you can look past that. I haven't had any of their meat pizzas, but the veggie pizza is pretty great. The regular pizzas have very light tomato sauce, light cheese and light toppings. the crust is so thin, you can't really pile on the toppings. Nor is it anything like a New York style pizza. I've even asked the cook to cut it into 4 slices instead of 12 or 14 they usually do, but they said they couldn't do it and we left it at that. The plates and cups for fountain drinks/water are styrofoam and the flatware is plastic. They are not winning any awards for eco-friendly. I've had only one issue with a guy there that appears to be a manager. once, we asked if they could turn down the air, which was blasting in the upstairs area. We were the only customers in the entire place. The (good looking male) manager copped a New York attitude and said " I'm sweating my balls off. I've been here since 9am (it was 10pm). the air stays on. I can turn it up a little if that would be better for you." We shut up and ate our pizza and left him a tip, but we now try to go when he's not there. Too bad we had young kids with us that day, otherwise it probably wouldn't have made too much of a lasting impression. read more

I am only commenting on walking in, getting a slice, and that's it. I did not venture upstairs to the bar area. I had been DYING to try this place. I read the reviews on Yelp. It just seemed that the timing was never right. I've lived in Toledo for over a year and a half now and once I heard that there was a place with NY style pizza, it always stayed in the back of my mind. Well, you know how it goes. You get lazy. You order crappy franchise delivery. You don't feel adventurous enough to make the 20 min trek downtown to try the place. And every time you go out downtown everyone wants something more than "just pizza." So I finally had my day. I walked in...service was prompt and friendly. They had a very reasonable price for slices...then I got the pizza. It's been said before, but I'm going to say it again...it's NOT NY Style pizza. I lived in NY for six years. I ate pizza while I was there. A lot of pizza. A lot of good pizza...and this ain't it. Is the pizza bad? No. Not per se. But, as a previous poster called it "paper plate thin" I couldn't agree more. And just as a paper plate gets transparent when it is greasy, so does their crust. I could see through my crust...it was that greasy and that thin. The main difference between NY Style pizza and chain/Midwest pizza is that NY Style pizza will NEVER be cooked in a conveyor-belt style oven. There's an art to spinning the pizza in the oven to make sure that it is evenly cooked and the fact that the pizza lays right in the oven, directly on the hot surface, gives it that undeniable crispness to it. I've made a pizza or two in my day...on a conveyor belt unfortunately...but oh, how I long for the days of a true NY slice. Please God, let me win the lotto so I can afford to move back. Above all...the sauce and cheese taste good and that's 75% of the battle. You can definitely do worse...and I prefer it to several chain places. As Opening Day of the Toledo Mud Hens season approached, my friend and I decided to visit one of her new local favorites: Home Slice Pizza. Located within a block of the stadium, this two-story bar has a lot of character to it. The walls are simply the bare brick of the old building, giving it an established local hangout feel. The first floor consists of a few booths and the kitchen while the second contains a full bar as well as several tables. Being a smaller place when compared to other bars in that neighborhood, Home Slice offers a more intimate atmosphere allowing more camaraderie between customers. For the game they also had the area behind the restaurant open for outdoor service, taking advantage of the great weather we had. Home Slice has several beers on tap and offers other regional and top-shelf brews. They also ran several game day specials on your typical American beers, which come in handy when you see that $5+ price of the same beer at the ballpark. The menu options are your usual pizza parlor food but with some unique twists. My friend and I ordered a large pizza with ham and pineapple, which we split between the two of us without any problem. The pizza is thin crust and was very good compared to other thin crust pizzas. You could actually taste the sauce in this one! After the game we returned here and were surprised to find a live band playing in the upstairs portion of the bar. I would definitely recommend this hidden gem in the downtown area for a cheaper alternative to the food in the ballpark and a hometown atmosphere. read more

Only complaints: Pizza w/garlic came with whole cloves - would have prefered it minced or something. The large cloves of garlic were a bit much. Got a personal margherita pizza with extra basil. Boy was I surprised that the basil was dried and not fresh like real margherita pizzas! So basically it was a cheese pizza with tomatoes on it. Having lived in NY for 15 years, I can say with a clear conscience, passion and sincere concern for the city of Toledo... This is NOT "New York Style" Pizza!! Home Slice Pizza is the reason why people in the Mid West think Chicago Style Pizza is better. Here is why Home Slice Pizza is not New York Style: 1) You cannot cook "New York Style" Pizza on a conveyor belt oven, period. That's like microwaving a filet-mignon. I mean, could you imagine if Ray, Grimaldi or Lombardi walked into your store? Would you be embarrassed? Seriously? Would you still be able to look them in the eye while standing in front of that conveyor belt electrical oven and claim you have "New York Style" pizza? I'm sure Toledo thinks the oven has nothing to do with it, which is precisely why this place has probably gotten decent reviews. But let me tell you, and I promise, "New York Style" pizza has as much if not more to do with the way it is cooked than it does the ingredients. You cook "New York Style" pizza in a coal brick oven, or at the LEAST a real freaking pizza oven. Why does Toledo insist on using those crappy conveyor belts? That's like admitting that you don't know how to cook a pizza when you need it to pop out the other end when it's done like a freaking pop tart. 2) The ingredients suck. They use Cysco quality shredded mozzarella in a bag and tomato sauce that is decent, but not great. The ingredients combined with the cooking method make the taste OK when it's hot, but seriously, I dare you to take it home and eat it the next day. 3) Thin Crust is an insult. First, just because a pizza is 18 inches does not make it "New York Style". It just makes it a poorly made pizza that is 2 inches bigger than a regular sized pizza. But more importantly, the crust itself is terrible, I mean, truly terrible. It probably has a lot to do with that oven they use (see #1), but none the less. BLAGH! I wrote this review because I am sure there are other New Yorkers that have spent the time trying to find REAL pizza in Toledo (almost impossible unless you like pizza in a pot pie crust like Pizza Popalis). I wanted to spare them the heartache of Home Slice. Tip for the owners: Your pizza might not be soooo bad if you stopped calling it "New York Style". Just call it "Regular Pizza that is 2 inches bigger" and wow Toledoans with what they really like anyway; QUANTITY! read more

The defining characteristic of Homeslice pizza is it's thinness. To those who compare it to New York pizza I'd have to disagree. This isn't to say it is bad, on the contrary. It's just it's own category or style of pizza. ( midwest style? Toledo style?) The basic Margherita pizza is excellent as is their white pizza ( I had mine without sausage but it normally comes with it) The Potato pizza is also very popular but I haven't tried it. Because the pizza is so thin you have to be careful not to go when you are super hungry or else you can end up eating an entire pizza. By far the best pizza I've had in Toledo. Absolutely delicious. This is as close to New York Style pizza as you're going to get outside the over-hyped metropolis. If anything, "New York Style Pizza" shouldn't be taken literally, as we're not in New York. I think most people with an I.Q. over 95 understand the connotation of that term. If you think they shouldn't call it New York style, take a trip to Los Angeles and sample some of the many atrocities labelled "New York Style". Trust me, you will no longer mind that the delicious pizza served at Home Slice is called New York Style. Tried Home Slice for a weekday lunch with co-workers, mainly driven by the name of the joint, which we thought was truly awesome. We didn't find the pizza quite as awesome. We did show up a touch early for lunch -- before noon -- and we hadn't realized that when they say "thin crust," they really, REALLY mean it. We were the only customers in the place for most of our lunch, and we still had to wait an unusually long time for such a thin-crust pizza. Being used to not-quite-so-thin-crust at other pizza joints, we'd falsely assumed that one large would be sufficient for three or four of us. Maybe if we were drinking beers before a game, or just had the munchies, but not for a standard weekday lunch. That day, we ended up stopping at another local eatery and having second lunch before going back to work. I'm guessing this place has a great atmosphere for its intended bar crowd on game days. The upstairs is well-furnished and has a pleasant enough ambiance for a sports bar: dark-finished wood, high-top tables, and TVs above the bar. Not the best place for a lunch with co-workers, though. Many other sports bars downtown do a quite passable double-duty between weekday lunch hours and game-day festivities -- just not Home Slice. read more

Great pizza and beer in downtown Toledo. We ordered the Margarita chicken pizza and a pepperoni, mushroom and olive pizza and both were outstanding. We also had the artichoke and spinach cheese bread and it was damn good. The place is cozy with an upstairs bar. The bartenders were great and helpful. If you have kids you can sit downstairs or up. No bar downstairs. We took the kids and they enjoyed the pizza as well. In the summer there is an upstairs outdoor deck to enjoy food and drink. Not too expensive. read more

My husband discovered this place on yelp and we decided to give it a try. We went early on a game day, although we had to wait for them to open, it was well worth the visit. The pizza is the tastiest thin crust pizza around... and I mean thin crust, paper thin and delicious! I ordered a personal size and because it was so thin, I ate the whole thing. I wasn't filled up by lots of breading. My husband ordered a large and finished it too. If you are looking for a bread pizza, this is not the place. If you are looking for a crisp thin pizza try this place! It was very good! We sat in the front area and it was very busy with the chefs and all kinds of people hustling around to get things done. The younger crowd walked in and went right upstairs to the bar. I am sure they were there for the pizza and the beer. We are older and we aren't drinkers, so the front area was fine. This is by far the best pizza in Toledo. Since moving here (against my will) a year ago, we've been looking for good pizza and all the pizza places here have fallen WAY flat (esp. Bambino's and Jet's--super nasty). The atmosphere is definitely more big city/East Coast so my guess is that the people who say it's a dive bar or whatever have NEVER left Toledo. We went for weekday drinks and pizza so not sure how it would be on a Saturday night. It is on the smaller side which is cozy with not a lot of people but I guess could be claustrophobic if too many people were up in there. They also have a back deck with a nice downtown view. Delicious!! We got the potato and XXL cheese. Had been on the road for about 9hrs so we called ahead and ordered, and a table and cooked pizza were waiting for us when we arrived! Yum! I am rating 4 stars because the staff were pretty inattentive and not super friendly as you would want from a restaurant, but that seems like the style of the place. Serve yourself drinks, bar upstairs, outdoor patio, street parking. There was a game at the stadium nearby so it was tough finding parking but at the last minute someone pulled out and we got a spot right out front! I would highly recommend this place, just don't expect to be catered to like you normally would at a restaurant, which I didn't mind terribly. The pizza is really delicious. I'm such a fan of this place my wife and I had our rehearsal dinner/party here the night before our wedding (yep, you can rent the upstairs bar area for a few hours). We didn't want our rehearsal dinner to be stuffy or a big to-do, so Homeslice Pizza's upstairs bar area fit our intentions perfectly. The look and feel of this establishment has always reminded me of a low key, New York City loft. A very cool place to converse with friends, eat great thin crust pizza, and drink beer. The pizza is super thin with a sauce straight from New York City. What I like about this pizza compared to New York's typical pie is that the crust is much crispier than what is found in The Big Apple. I'm not a fan of big floppy crust. In my opinion this is one of the best places to get a pizza. With that mentioned, there is a certain grease factor that comes with this pizza excellence. Homeslice brings the grease in a glorious way. The trendy and hipster crowd matches the look of this place. The bartender/waiter we had last night was very friendly and honest. Our bill had been over charged and he caught it! Homeslice is always busy on weekends, but especially so after Mudhens games. Lately, I have been buying the Groupon deals for Homeslice every time they are offered, not that I need a deal to walk in to this great Toledo establishment.
