Daily special - Sour Cream Coffee Cake
    Aerielle S.

They charge an automatic 20% on tip regardless of party size. Not too crowded, but definitely has a lot of business. It was a very homey vibe in here, felt comfortable. I ordered the coffee cake because the waitress said the daily special was sour cream and I was intrigued! Perfectly sweet, crumbly (but not too crumbly) and the pecan flavor really compliments the whole cake. Really enjoyed it! I ordered the Sausage and Fennel Hash, it was good. I thought there were fries on the side but there wasn't any. The eggs were cooked very interestingly. I ordered over medium and only one of the two eggs were over medium, the other was completely cooked. Same thing happened to the eggs in the corned beef hash. I liked that I didn't feel too stuffed and heavy after the meal!

If you want classic diner food in south berkeley this is the spot!!! Extensive menu with some awesome specials as well! :) For an Omlette it was surprisingly delicious and well done! Their homemade jams and salsas were absolutely delicious!!!

Overall, it was a disappointing and dissatisfying experience but it was mostly on the cooks. The service overall was ok, we were seated relatively quickly on a late Saturday morning and were helped quickly. After the food was delivered, no one checked in on us again. The food looked good and I so wanted it to be good. This place has been on my watchlist for a few months and we finally got an opportunity to try it out. Unfortunately, it did not go the distance. My hash was a bit oily and had a bunch of burnt bits in it. Not just black bits, but black, hard, crunchy bits of carbon. The eggs were well cooked, and the turkey seemed juicy enough so that helped. The fried chicken and biscuits were overall disappointing as well. The gravy and egg were quite good and flavorful. The biscuit, their signature item, was doughy and raw in the middle while also being extremely hard on the bottom. The fried chicken was fine but it was a whole chicken breast (not filleted, or pounded thin, etc) and bland. We decided not to get the biscuit beignets afterwards. I'm really bummed because I like neighborhood cafes and will forgive a lot but we won't be returning, especially after the mandatory 20% service fee.

We ordered BABE and breakfast biscuit (egg, gravy on top of biscuit). Both were delicious. They made their own strawberry jam, which was super fresh and not too sweet. I mixed it with iced tea and cream to make an Asian style boba milk tea.

We really wanted to like the new Homemade Cafe, especially since we frequented the previous spot and hoped to support the relaunch. The food itself was decent--my Fried Chicken Brunch Sandwich and my husband's Biscuits & Gravy Breakfast were fine. But the overall experience was uncomfortable. When we arrived, the server seemed overwhelmed and flustered. We ordered two double cappuccinos that came out half full (see photos). When we politely flagged it, the owner brought over a pitcher of frothy milk to top them off--not ideal. What really made the experience unpleasant was the tension among staff. The server raised her voice at the owner at the register (we were sitting just a few feet away) and continued to be audibly irate in the kitchen. The whole vibe felt tense and hostile. I understand growing pains with new management and staffing challenges, but this just didn't feel like a welcoming or professional environment. Sadly, we won't be back--but I do hope this feedback is helpful as they continue to work things out.

Everyone was very friendly, welcoming and checked on our table throughout our meal. Food was delicious! Great flavor and quality ingredients. Lots of sunlight and local art. Had a sighting of the local turkeys taking a morning stroll.

I went on a Monday late morning and I ordered the corned beef and hash. They told me about a special that was similar to it so I ordered that and it was a really good. It was nice and crispy. The eggs were good as well. I got sunnyside up. Coffee was nice and strong and hot. My waitress was friendly and then there was a guy that came later to check on how was I doing with my food. He had a nice smile. I couldn't tip what I wanted because they add on some kind of gratuity but no big deal.

Homemade Cafe was simply the best! They are now closed down. The service was great and the ambiance was always pleasant, as I've frequented this establishment since I was a kid-- literally for over 30 years. Now they're gone. So sad. Hopefully they pop up again somewhere else. Wishing them luck. The pic attached is one of the good ol' faithful meals: ranch rancheros.

The bakery itself seems to mainly be a takeout spot, with minimal indoor seating which felt pretty inconvenient given the limited space for customers, however it did seem to serve more of a purpose as a waiting area anyways. The structure of the bakery leaves a bit to be desired as well, as we found the glass display cases as the only form of menu, so being in the front of the line while still deciding what to order caused some unnecessary anxiety. Regardless of those nitpicks, the baked goods themselves were pretty good! Service was instant, and all of the treats looked delicious--it was hard to choose what we wanted! Our favorites were the Thai Tea and Ube Coconut Mochi Donuts. Both had really strong flavors--the Ube in particular was very clear in comparison to most other Ube desserts in my experience. The textures of the mochi donuts were really well done too, with soft exteriors and chewy, glutinous interiors. The same can be said about the Mochi Muffins, though with crunchier parts around the edges. We found the contrast of textures to actually work really well! However, the flavors of the Muffins were lacking a bit--the Red Velvet didn't stand out much, with the frosting tasting a bit too sweet, and while the Five Spice had a really interesting flavor, it was also a bit too sweet, drowning out the more unique citrusy flavor. Overall, however, all four of the goods we had were enjoyable eats, and would definitely return some time to try out other flavors!

We had been to Tarocco for lunch and figured we would ask them for a quote, too. My daughter warned me that the owner is trying to be an "influencer" on Instagram and posts photos of herself in crop Tops so I should beware, but that's fine by me. We called to get a quote and had a discussion. After we gave the owner all of our information, she told us she wouldn't give us a quote unless we came in person (?!) Which is weird because this isn't how restaurants work. Typically for events restaurants will give you a quote via phone or email for the sake of convenience. We had gotten 3 quotes already from other restaurants via phone. Making us drive 45 mins just to get a quote is a total waste of time. Especially if we can't afford it. So my daughter called again, left a VM explaining we couldn't come in person due to time constraints, and again asked for a quote. No reply. We waited a few days and called again. No reply. Finally we got a voicemail from the owner saying that she didn't like my daughter's attitude ?!!! Apparently you're not allowed to ask this restaurant how much they charge for events unless you're face to face. This lady has absolutely no idea how to run a restaurant. We took our business elsewhere and recommend that you do, too.

Their menu showed items like waffles and croissant French toast, which sounded really promising. I decided to try the croissant French toast and really wanted to like it. The croissant itself had potential, but the egg mixture was very heavy and lacked some of the warm flavors you typically expect in French toast, like cinnamon or vanilla. Even with the berries and syrup, it still leaned very egg-forward. I also ordered a side of bacon for some extra protein, and that was actually cooked really well. For drinks, I tried the strawberry latte with the vanilla bean soft top. I initially expected more of a coffee-forward drink, but it was much sweeter and reminded me more of an elevated strawberry milk. The space itself is cute and gives more of a social, aesthetic hangout vibe than a traditional brunch spot. Parking can also be a bit tricky. There's free parking in the Trader Joe's garage nearby, but it's unclear whether parking there while dining at the café is allowed. Overall, I liked the concept and atmosphere more than the actual food during this visit.

There was no one waiting behind us, but we were met with an inflexible, robotic "sorry, we're closed." No one was overtly rude, but the interaction felt rigid and mechanical, as if following procedure mattered more than acknowledging the people standing in front of them. It would not have taken much effort to accept one last order from a loyal couple with a newborn--especially since nobody else was waiting behind us. The food always looked really good, but for whatever reason I always ended up ordering from somewhere else. Well, I finally did it. I finally ordered from Cali Alley, and all I have to say is, why did I wait so darn long? Door Dash was having a 2-for-1 deal on the Cali Alley Burger, so I ordered one of those (and got another for free) , as well as on the small mac and cheese, so I ended up with two of those as well. I got fries as he side for the burgers and saved the second burger and mac and cheese for the next day. I also bought a small side of veggie fried rice for lunch later in the week. OK, let's start with the fries ... wow. Super crispy. Don't know what they do to them, but I think I almost ate all the fries that came with one of the burgers before I even touched the burger. The fries seemed to have a coating like some fries do to make them extra crispy on the outside. Whatever it was, it made them so good, I couldn't stop eating them. I was almost too full for the burger. But who are we kidding? If there is one thing I am good at, it is eating more than I should. The burger, which is described on Door Dash as "char grilled, fresh ground brisket and short rib burger, served on a toasted brioche fun with crisp lettuce, tomato onion marmalade and garlic aioli" was thick and incredibly flavorful. I couldn't stop eating that, either. It was that good. I ordered it medium, and it was pretty pink, but it was sooooooo flavorful, and all the toppings worked well together. I didn't get any cheese on it because I wanted to try to burger by itself and not mask it with cheese. I might try adding cheese next time, but honestly the burger is so good, I almost wouldn't want to cover up its flavor with cheese. Oh, I almost forgot. When you order on Door Dash, you can opt to have them include a small side of their chocolate-chipotle bbq sauce, and I highly recommend that you get it. It's a really interesting flavor and is good for dipping the fries in. I didn't try putting it on the burger, but that might be good, too. The mac and cheese was OK. It's important to note that I enjoyed the flavor but it is more of an eggy consistency than a saucy mac and cheese if that makes sense. It has a nice kick of black pepper, which I liked, though. The vegetarian fried rice was also fine but could have used a little salt. All that to say, don't be like me and procrastinate, get the Cali Alley Burger and fries ASAP.
