The service is excellent. Some of the best waitresses around the area. We have eaten here 3 times this month and have enjoyed it. I get the buffet and on Friday and Saturday is a nice seafood style. No crab legs but the shrimp and oysters are well prepared. The salad selection is nice. The only complaint I have are the dessert options are very limited to some fresh fruit (canned) and some pudding. Need to add a nice cake or pie! read more

When we walked in I had some trepidation about the place to be quite honest, but my fears were quickly dispelled when the amazing staff took us to our table with a smile and a joke. I was there on Monday 7/7/25. It was approximately 7 p.m. A lot of items on the buffet were very low and several were cool instead of hot. I didn't find the items very desirable at all. I left eating very little and disappointed. However, what got me the most is when I went to pay my bill. Because I was staying at a nearby hotel, they offer a 10% discount. The man at the register rang up my total which was $14.03. I handed him $15. (had already left a generous tip at the table because the waitress was very polite). He asked if I had the 3 pennies and then said if I didn't I wouldn't be getting any change! Seriously??? I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Not only was it said but also in a very rude manner. In all the years of travelling and eating out, I have never had this happen. If anything, it's been the opposite, saying not to worry about the three cents. We went in for lunch on Saturday and we were seated and told to go look at the buffet and if we didn't want it then we'd get menus. We just went ahead and got plates, old style Shoneys type buffet (as it's in an old Shoneys) was good. Not a huge selection but enough and for 9.99 a person a pretty good deal. I've had to limit my diet to soft food so once that is over, I will go back and taste their other meats. They have a very good Salisbury steak but it does not have enough mushroom gravy. Unassuming exterior. Clean and orderly inside. We (adult and 2 children) came in New Years Day and had the lunch buffet. I was pleasantly surprised by the low prices. Basic country food served. Don't let the outside appearance fool you!! This place is legit. We took our kids for dinner and everything was incredible and fresh. Our server was so accommodating and really on top of things. She also engaged with our kids which is always a plus. As someone who has previously worked in food service you know that the job can be challenging at times. Despite their sign stating they are short staffed, service was not compromised. We went this morning for breakfast and it was even better than dinner! The biscuits were definitely not out of a can, the gravy was on point along with everything else. Even the coffee was good! Great Breakfast Buffet everything fresh and full. They were able to keep up with the crowd and it is always crowded at Breakfast! Lunch buffet was a bit disappointing but I think it was because we were a bit late in the afternoon, everything was full and looked great but Cold! If it had been our first time there I would probably not go back but from past experience I know that was not the norm. We have not tried evening buffet yet but hear it's great so we will be checking it out. Ok, we arrived in Staunton as a stopping point on a long drive from Atlanta, GA to New York. The Hometown Grill and Buffet happened to be 1/4 mile from the Sleep Inn we stopped at for the night (separate review on hotel) and we got a 10% discount for showing our hotel key. It's a local grill and buffet joint that's pretty much a hole in the wall type of place. The food is not spectacular but for two very tired folks who had been driving all day, it hit the spot. First off let me say that Calvin was a most pleasant host for the dinner. Friendly service you'd expect from a southern, down-home joint. We did not arrive until after 8:30pm so the hot food had probably been sitting out on the buffet for a while. Some of it was somewhat dry, but sauces did help with that. The fried fish was flaky and not bad, especially with the tartar sauce. I thought I would be "healthier" by opting for the roasted chicken over the fried chicken, but honestly the fried chicken was the best thing on the buffet along with the mashed potatoes. The salad bar was decent and fresh and certainly a healthier option. My wife being a vegetarian, there was really nothing on the buffet other than the salad so she had them make their Spaghetti dish with just the tomato sauce, which also came with the salad buffet. She was pleasantly surprised that the pasta was not overcooked. So this is not a four star restaurant nor is it a Golden Corral but for two weary travelers, it was very convenient and it definitely hit the spot. It's a shame bc we really were excited to try this place out! I splurged on the crab legs, which were an ADDITIONAL $8/lb. to the already exorbitant 13.99/pp for the seafood buffet. I LOVE crab legs and have eaten them my whole life. The ones they cooked and served to me I couldn't even eat bc they had absolutely NO flavor or taste. The waitress took it off my bill which was much appreciated. But seriously, how hard is it to steam crab legs correctly? The "butter" for the seafood to be dipped in was tasteless as well...pretty much just tasted like oil...no flavor The iceberg lettuce was turning pink bc it was old. The steak that came with the buffet was old and brown in the center even tho it was cooked medium rare. You could see that the "brown" color was NOT bc they accidentally cooked it well done. They cooked it medium rare, but still it wasn't pink...it was brown, like old meat. The server took them back and brought out new ones...but the meat was still the same. Gross!
