Stopped by as i was in the area for business. Anytime i see a New Orleans style BBQ shrimp on the menu, i have to have it.. Hondo's version did not disappoint!! I even brought the leftover sauce home cuz i couldn't let that deliciousness go to waste. My filet with blue cheese crumbles was perfect, super tender steak. My only complaint would be the Caesar salad's dressing was tasteless. Thankfully i was able to get them to remove the up-charge for it (more-so because i got it as my only side instead of choosing two that was included with the meal). My waitress Kayla was a sweetie, the lady that brought my steak was friendly, complimenting my meal choices, and another waiter - an older gentleman (73 y/o!) chatted me up a bit and gave me a couple laughs. I love a good steak! At Hondo's, the Filet Mignon is off the charts. Thick, tender and tasty cut that will satisfy the carnivore within you! But, I digress, first let me tell you about our welcome. We were greeted by a polite host who led us to a cozy, intimate booth. The restaurant was dim and soft jazz was playing in the background. The ambiance is soothing. We chose a nice wine, Seven Deadly Zins, a medium dry, full bodied Zinfandel that was delicious. Our server, Brian, had impeccable timing and manners. He brought us the most delicious honey butter along with a bread basket. And while I usually don't indulge in many carbs, I couldn't resist this sweet and salty concoction! We ordered the above-mentioned steak with Béarnaise sauce, sweet potato with butter and cinnamon along with salads. Now, here I must interject a side note: when the Caesar salad came out, a little friend hitched a ride. A fruit fly was in the salad, and actually several others were buzzing around our table. Brian quickly went to the kitchen to get a new salad and the manager, Shahrose came over with his apologies. He moved us to a more interior booth and gave us complimentary wine. Cheers! We think the flies were coming from the snake plants by the windowsill. These things happen, even in a fine dining establishment, but they handled it with finesse and courtesy. Well done! Back to review: everything else came out perfectly. The sweet potato was soft and flavorful. The steak was amazing and the salad was crisp and Parmesan cheesy with fresh grated Romano added. Our desserts were incredible! My friend got the cheesecake which was dense and smooth. I ordered the Southern Pecan pie with the ice cream on the side. I had a foodgasm upon the first bite! The delicate crust was full of pecans in a warm molasses filling but it wasn't too sweet. One of the best pecan pies I've ever had! The wait staff was wonderful. However the food was sub par. My husband had baby back ribs. He said they were the worst he ever had. He is a Grill Man!! I had a ribeye that was dry rubbed. It was juicy and had a good flavor. The plate was served at 500 degrees as the waiter stated. I did burn myself. We were disappointed with the baked potatoes ( sweet and regular). Overcooked and mushy. The meal was $240 for the 2 of us. The meal was comprable to Applebees with a huge dollar amount. We eat at fine restaurants often for the experience and food. August 23, 2025: My husband and I went for happy hour at the bar. The bartender "Jay" was very rude and disrespectful. He started out by rushing us after we only had two appetizers and one drink each. Then when we ordered our burgers as our meals, every response was "yep". There was only one other couple at the bar, who was eating and looking at their cellphones with the volume on and up. I was show my husband a video with the volume low and he stated, turn that down. I stated you haven't said anything to the other couple and that made him mad. He raised his voice and stated you can leave. I pointed out my color of skin "black" and that he has been rude to us since we sat the bar. He stated i am not going to allow you to say that, you can leave. Of course we had finished our meals and paid our bill We have been going to Hondo's for over 15-20 years and have never been treated bad. He stated that he has been working there for 5 months. We have interacted with several other bartenders and waiters in the past, who were treated excellent. I believe " Jay" needs to be retrained on customer service and to treat all customers equally, no matter their skin tone/meaning black. read more

This place has been recommended to me a few times and I finally decided to give it a try. I will say their honey butter with bread is good. But I was disappointed with the steak, I am not a complainer so I didn't say anything but don't order medium well, as I did and it was definitely cooked well done. I got the 12oz filet and my girlfriend got the 8oz filet and there wasn't much difference in the size, but that's a difference in price. Ethan was our server and he was very good and tentative. I dined here some months ago and dined there again last evening. As three were seated I ned that one wise glass was still sorry form a former use and a bread knife was not clean. The server introduced himself as "Alec," or "Alex." We did not see him for 25 minutes, at which point we invited another (female) server to take a drink order. She was obviously alloyed. As she took the first order Alex returned and she left him to deal with us. It kay be the custom of the place but no one ever offered us a piece of bread. We then ordered two appetizers to share and a second drink. The appetizers came but we had to ask another server to give us utensils to divide them up. Instead of a serving spoon or two he gave us the usual silverware in a black napkin. We made do, of course. They were very flavorful but we could not eat all of them. Then for the next 40 minutes the appetizers and dirty plates stayed on the table and in the way. During that period the manager/someone in management came by the table to greet one of my guests and to chat briefly. Interesting that his glance did no engage the dirty plates. After another 20 minutes the manager returned to repeat the same amenities. Once again he ignored the dirty plates. I then invited Alex to please remove them, which he did, except for one. The very pricey min courses drives in a Ruth Chris imitation flair....one additional female server was there with her own flashlight to ask whether our steaks were cooked correctly. Poor thing. Alex had not provided us with forks so we had no ability to decide in public the extravangza of steak perfection. In point of fact the servers did not give us that we had ordered so we had to adjust where the steaks "belonged." Alex brought three forks to the table. By then she was gone. No spectacular or even unspectacular meat event for the public to see. At these very expensive prices I expected that the dining experience would be worth it. Steaks were barely fine...nothing to trade with Omaha! Limited parking. Incompetent staff, including the manager. Oh yes in our section of the restaurant tables were set for ten tables. Three weee occupied. All during dinner another staff person removed and then rearranged chairs as we were dining at the other tables. Advice to the restaurant: Clean the menus. Instruct your staff. Do not be so pompous as an owner to ignore the work that should have being done with dirty plates on the table and monitor the furniture readjustments when guests are dinning. Bring in movers when there are no clients. Then again you may not care at all and irked at a critique. Advice to potential diners; Do not be fooled by thus fave steak house. I recently visited Hondo's with a friend for their Sunday brunch buffet. The food at this upscale establishment was very good and there were an amazing selection of breakfast and lunch items. Our server, Tanner, was personable and attentive without being overbearing. The carving station meats were delicious. My only complaint is every "hot item" I sampled was lukewarm to cold. My friend expressed the same sentiments. The restaurant opened at 11:00 am and our reservation was at 11:15 am. The food should have been piping hot! This is definitely a five star establishment and I would like to give it another try when in Richmond/Glen Allen. Before I do I need assurance the food will be much hotter! read more

This is hondos thanksgiving dinner.. yes we along with several others got served a plated full of minced turkey that looked like dog food.. and if you look you will see they covered it in mushroom beef gravy.. who puts beef gravy on turkey? Well hondos so called chef does.. not only was the turkey disgusting but the greenbeans were cold and dried up and the yams were so hard you could play baseball with them.. this plate of food looks like table scraps you feed your dog but i love my dog to much to feed him this crap.. I have been going to hondos for almost 20 years. In the last 3 years this place has fallen apart. I finally had enough with the continuous poor quality of food and now i am posting a review.. the manager John has really let this place fall and a lot of regulars have stopped going. Been to Hondos many times and still remains one of my favorite steak houses. The cowboy cut ribeye is always excellent and cooked perfectly. On this trip we were told we didn't have reservations(even though we did) but we were seated anyway. Our waitress was fantastic and the food was mostly great. Our potato sides weren't even luke warm when we received them, our waitress quickly took them back and brought us replacements but even those were only hot on top and cold inside. I am beyond happy with my experience today! The atmosphere was elegant, our waiter Frankie was so professional and kind, and my food.... what can i even say about my food. It was exquisite. I tasted the lamb lollipops with the garlic potatoes and oh good goodness! Boy o boy was I pleased. This was my first time dining at Hondo's and I ordered the Shrimp and Grits and it had a ham gravy which I had the pleasure of having this delicious biscuit on the side that I dipped in the gravy and I must say, I could have walked in the kitchen to look the chef in his eyes and blow him or her a chefs kiss! Lol! I had a taste of the maple sausage and oh goodness.... it tasted as if they got the maple out the tree themselves... and lastly... that calamari... oh my goodness!!! This restaurant had a very well cooked porterhouse. It's very expensive but the steak was worth it. The only thing that was wrong with the entire evening was that my guest and I were not served our dinners together. My steak came ten minutes before my dates. Went for a work conference hosted by a pharmaceutical company and boy was I impressed. The menu was preselected but they did a great job being flexible with it even being so limited. Lucky enough I got to share a lot of the food with my coworkers. I personally enjoyed the Caesar salad, filet mignon, sweet potato, jumbo shrimp and the raspberry sorbet. However I was able to taste the cheesecake, lobster, chicken milanese, and the crab cake. All were cooked to perfection! The steak was super tender with amazing flavor. The shrimp was classic steamed shrimp. The salad came with slot of crisp lettuce and cheese/croutons!! The crab cake had more crab than cake which I was pleased with, Sweet potato was like dessert! How this place is so well rated on open table, I have no idea. I should've checked here first Took my wife here tonight for her birthday dinner and the highlight of the meal was the ice water. Service was fine, I wish I could tell you my servers name, but I have no idea because he never introduced himself For appetizer we had the fried oyster, they were pretty good! So far so good. For a second course we had Soup. Her French Onion was very good, my seafood bisque was an inedible. It must be from frozen or from a bag and had zero seafood in it. Third course, we had the house salad. It was a house salad, nothing special Or entrées are where things really took a turn for the worse. I had the seafood trio, which was one of the worst seafood platters that I've ever been served my entire life. Growing up on the Chesapeake Bay, I love a good crabcake and some nicely seared scallops, this was neither of those. The scallops were allegedly supposed to be in a pesto, they were visibly burnt and cooked with some kind of peppercorn blackening seasoning? There was nothing resembling a pesto on the scallops, they were terrible. The crabcake used obviously canned crab meat, lacked any consistency. It was just overall tasteless and actually fishy. Tasted like stale crab meat. I only ate it so as to not embarrass my wife on her birthday. The Parmesan shrimp was pretty good and the only thing good about the trio. 1/3 I guess My wife had the steak Hondo, their signature steak which is essentially a filet Oscar. The filet taste like it was cooked with sous vide, but never reverse seared. If not that, then boiled. Steak lacked any flavor, I don't think they seasoned it at all. The hollandaise sauce was essentially just raw egg, it also had no flavor. How do you mess up hollandaise!? The highlight of the $77 steak dish was the asparagus, which is really just sad I'll be clear in saying I'm not a cheap diner, I have no problem spending $200-&300 on dinner for a service of two, but this meal wasn't worth $20. Went there today for Valentine's Day since my wife has not been there. Made reservations at 11:30am and was seated immediately. They had a special that included a salad or soup, entree. Desert and drink for $39.00. I ordered a salad, crap cake for an entree, cheesecake for desert and ice tea. The salad was made with care and a good size, the crab cake was mostly crab with mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables. The meal was excellent with great service. Delmar treated us with a smile and great service. My wife ordered the filet and it also came with mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables and a glass of red wine. Great food and service. We went for brunch and it was just okay. Our reservations werent until 130 so we only had an hour, but it was plenty of time. We just werent impressed with the selection for it being $38 pp. Online said waffles, but there werent any. They had most other breakfast options like eggs, bacon, sausage, home fries, and biscuits and gravy. They did have an omelet station and some carved meats. The biscuits were very hard and not good. They also had lunch items. The bbq ribs were the best thing there, but the sides were lacking. In fact, i think the only real side item that i remember was steamed veggies. I didnt try them because they didnt look great. They had some kind of chicken which was okay. Gnocci which was just okay. Fish which my husband said was not good, but he did like the salmon. The bbq ribs were really the only thing i liked. They also had some salad options. They had lots of dessert, the cheesecake was good, the chocolate cake was dry. Also had no sweet tea lol. The veggies were undercooked. and the mac in the mac and cheese was overcooked to the point of mush. For my entrée, I got the filet, it was cooked properly, but the presentation was adequate at best. The cut and flavor was lacking. I have had better steaks at many other places in Richmond and was not impressed. The waiter was an older gentleman, who was well versed with the menu. Went to Hondo's at the end of August for my dad's birthday dinner. I had high expectations and was disappointed. First, it is so dark I honestly had to pull out my phone to read the menu. I always feel like a restaurant is trying to hide something when it is that dark. They even carry flashlights to check the temp of your meat when you cut into it. The table was also small for four people. We had to keep having the waiter take things away and maneuver plates to make things work. Our waiter was a good sport. We are a sarcastic and engaging crowd and he hung in there with us! He was quick to offer suggestions/recommendations and made sure to be on top of everything we asked for. Dad had crab bisque and said it was delish. Salads were fine. Bread was very good. For dinner I had the two lobster tails. One was cooked perfectly and the other was undercooked. They do bring a fancy drawn butter dish with candle. Two peeps ordered steak and said it was good. I honestly can't remember what my step-sister ordered. Dessert was yummy. So, this was my 2nd time coming for Brunch. Last year for my birthday, we had a private room and ordered from a brunch menu, were provided croissants with amazing butter. Well, I visited again today for a friend's birthday...what a disappointment. None of us knew, not even the person who booked it, that brunch was a buffet. Their non-alcoholic drink options were minimal, although the mimosas were great! The brunch food itself was ok.. the waffles were delicious fluffy, light, and fresh (made on the spot); the omelets were ok, also fresh.. it would've been nice to have some of the veggies cooked till soft (buffet style downside since there's other people waiting for food too). The biscuits were cold, the serving utensils for just about everything were disgusting... I'm not a fan of buffets, many of us in the party aren't; we wouldn't have chosen to eat here for brunch had we know . When we talked to the server about this, they expressed that this change was reinstated only a couple weeks ago. It would've been nice to know that upon booking. Our servers Tanner and Amanda were decent though. If this is the way brunch will continue, I'll never come back for brunch. read more

(Updated June 2019 from 2017 review: Player piano is no longer being used (it seems), so much more pleasant atmosphere.) ----------- 2017: I absolutely hate that player piano and it's music! It's loud and the music styles that it plays do not make for good dining music. Even though the decor itself is nicer than the old location, that player piano is ridiculous! (by the way, some of the people who work there dislike it as well). It's located right at the front of the restaurant, as if to stay, "oh my, look what we have!" I think it is tacky. The last time we ate there (late October), I noticed that the quality of the NY Strip steak didn't seem as good as before, and the bernaise sauce was mediocre. I have liked the seafood bisque and the pan seared ahi tuna appetizer in the past, but didn't try those last visit, so cannot comment on their current quality. The caesar salad is still good. We had dined there many times before the move, but I refuse to go back and have to be tortured by that player piano. From what I understand, the owner of Hondo's paid over $40,000 for it, and it could have been money better spent on quality food! Shortpump steakhouse conveniently located in a shopping center with parking. Upon entering it doesn't feel like a shopping center restaurant at all, but a tastefully decorated fine dining venue with low lighting and white tablecloths. They have private dining rooms, booths, and individual tables to fit your seating preferences. Our waitress left a table tent so we wouldn't forget her name which was unique and a great way to keep us engaged. Everything we ordered was cooked to perfection from the shrimp stuffed with crab, seabass, sweet potatoes, and steamed vegetables. Make sure you leave room for dessert.
