Upon entering it doesn't feel like a shopping center restaurant at all, but a tastefully decorated fine dining venue with low lighting and white tablecloths. They have private dining rooms, booths, and individual tables to fit your seating preferences. Our waitress left a table tent so we wouldn't forget her name which was unique and a great way to keep us engaged. Everything we ordered was cooked to perfection from the shrimp stuffed with crab, seabass, sweet potatoes, and steamed vegetables. Make sure you leave room for dessert. Went here to celebrate my fiancé's birthday. We made a reservation but the restaurants was not packed. The ambiance is very nice. Very nice table settings. Our waitress was very nice. I got a lemon drop martini and it was really good. They did bring out warm toast points and that was nice. I had the salmon and garlic mashers. It was just okay. My best friend came down to visit me for the evening, and we decided to catch up and eat some delish steaks. I brought her to this place and right off the bat, we were really impressed. We were given a seat no time, the lighting was great because it was not too bright and it was not too dark, and the atmosphere was just right. We decided to start out with Bourbon Peakcock brie....let's just say that you can easily mistake that as a dessert. It was great and it melted right in your mouth. The flavor was different and welcoming. I would recommend it if you have a sweet tooth. I ended up ordering the small 6 oz Fillet Mignon with the side of Bake sweet potatoe (split) and my friend ordered the same but with a side of Hondo's Au Gratin Potatoes. Let's just say OUTSTANDING! I ordered my steak to be rare and it was perfect! The steak melted in my mouth with each bite. I loved it.- oh forgot: steaks came with a side salad, I picked the house salad with the dressing on the side. We didn't want our night to end just yet, so we continue our catching up over a shared dessert of Chocolate Punctuation!!!!! - and the portion was great to share. It was sorta like a chocolate lava cake, but not too heavy. We were still able to stay awake for the rest of the night. haha. We did get two glasses of "Dynamite" Cabernet Sauvignon and it matched very well with the meal that we got. My husband and I dined here as part of a belated birthday celebration recently and had a great time. The ambience and service are great, there is plenty of room for couples, business meetings, and even larger parties. My husband had the ribeye, which we both loved, I had the New York strip, which I wasn't 100% happy with however, this may have been a preference and not on the restaurant . The potatoes au gratin and creamed spinach are both very delicious, I also had the wedge salad and half carafe of Pinot noir, which were both good. No complaints with service, ambience or food. I have been here before and will definitely return. I hear that there is a brunch that I would love to come back and try. Bear in mind. This is a pricier steakhouse restaurant, they do offer a four course dinner option, which seems to be a good value. read more

Stopped in for dinner tonight (Memorial Day), and there were maybe four tables total. Why did it take over two hours from start to finish? Service was fine when we were receiving service, but staff seemed to be much more concerned with whatever other duties they had than taking care of their real, live customers. And the food? The food is just mediocre. We got oysters, a ribeye, the lamb chops, sauteed spinach and mac/cheese. All just okay. Nothing was incredible. $150. Much prefer Morton's or Ruth's Chris. read more

I met up with some friends at Hondos last week. I was craving seafood and figured I'd satisfy my tastebuds at this semi-upscale establishment. The Lobster Scampi was so salty my friend whispered across the table, "OMG this is salty af." I sampled a spoonful of mine figuring it would taste different because I added shrimp to the dish but nope. It was SALTY AF. Lol I had already eaten the cocktail shrimp and the crabcakes (which were both just okay), so I was full and ready to leave after eating the disappointing dish. The upside: the wait staff were attentive and kind. The downside: I probably could have gotten better food for a cheaper price elsewhere. And BTW, there were no noodles in the Scampi. Great dinner. We had the Baby Back Ribs as an appetizer - they were AMAZING. I later learned that Hondos was originally known for their ribs at the original location in Goochland. I would go back again and get the ribs as my main entree 100%. My husband had the lamb chops which he loves with a baked potato side. I had the peppered sea scallops as my main which were lovely but could have used a little more sear for my liking. Mashed potatoes were a hit side as well - all complete with a nice slice of cheesecake for a great birthday dessert. read more

I have watched Hondo's make slow decline over the past 10 years. The side items leave much to be desired. The ambiance is nice. HOWEVER, the service does not reflect the atmosphere or price point. My family & I had a 4:30 p.m. reservation on Dec. 29th. We were a party of ten. While we were awaiting dessert a male server from the back dining room took the opportunity to come to our table. And OUT LOUD for the other 2-3 parties that were seated in the room with us to hear him scold a 3-year old guest for the sound being too loud. Now we had been seated at least an hour and no one complained. And the server did NOT need to make an announcement over the ENTIRE dining room. It is inappropriate to address any party as "you folks". I believe "ladies & gentleman" would be more befitting of your establishment. When we inquired about the WiFi information we were never told that sound from devices was prohibited as this server stated. I attempted to speak with the manager. He was extremely unprofessional & dismissive. He did not even have the decency to face me. At one point, he turned his back on me & began to walk away while I was attempting to speak with him. The servers tone was very angry & classless. I am pretty certain that I will NEVER return to THIS establishment. read more

We had brunch today at Hondo's for my birthday. The restaurant is a very comfortable style and the room where we were seated was very small and intimate like someone's library and our server Charles went above and beyond to make sure that we had everything we needed. The array of food was amazing and it was delicious. And the piano player was an added touch. We had a wonderful afternoon, and I just wanted to let people know that it was worth every penny. And of course we topped off brunch with mimosas, and I was presented with a special birthday dessert. I would highly recommend Hondo's. read more

How terrible! Our experience was extremely poor and full of discrimination. We came in for lunch and our sever Erin treated us with the least amount of hospitality and attentiveness that we've ever experienced. I have 100s of OT reservations and this is my first written review. She took at least 10 minutes to come back and check on us after we got waters (Mind you I had to walk to the front to ask for her to take our order). When she finally came, she was condescending to my wife on her order. My wife ordered the filet and was asked if the wanted the sirloin. Weird We asked to speak to a manager only to inform him of the slow service in the hopes it would speed up. Manager had an attitude and appeared disgusted that we even wanted to speak with him. He made all kinds of excuses about why Erin took so long, including blaming us for not flagging her down if we were ready. He was very combative and seemed on edge. After an even worse interaction with him, we told him we no longer wanted the order we had just placed and that we were leaving. His response in disgust.... "Fine and do not come back!" He literally told us not to come back because we received poor service and decided to bring it to his attention. I then spoke with some other guy who claimed to be the GM (John) he had server attire on, felt like we were being punked. Either way, I gave him (John) my name and number and he assured me that he would give Steve, the owner, my info and explain what happened. A week later, no call from Steve. Not surprised. I've never felt so discriminated against in my life just for wanting a decent meal at one of the few steakhouses in Richmond. I'll never return and would encourage anyone looking for basic service and etiquette to stay away from this place as well. In response to Mgmt's comment below. It was a well written fictional reply. If I had sent it back, I would've had to sit there and watch my wife, eat her dinner. Then, when mine arrived, she would have to sit there and watch me eat mine. We have been to hondos in the past and generally been happy with the food and service. Tonight we waited 15 minutes to get a drink. The salad and bread was good and then things went south. I ordered the chef's special, fried flounder and a crabcake with parmasan risotto. The fish was full of needle bones. I almost swallowed one. The crabcake had shell in it and the risotto was under . cooked. Our waiter was Burger King level. I don't know what happened to this restuarant. read more

My friend and I went there for lunch because she had heard of their $12.95 lunch specials, one of which is chicken pot pie, and that is a favorite of hers. We both ordered that, and we were served two bowls of pot pie filling with a roll on the side, no explanation given. When I tracked down the server and asked why no pot pie, she said the kitchen had run out of puff pastry. I had the pleasure of having their dry aged ribeye, which can only be described as the best steak I've ever had. In addition to top notch steaks and entree's, Hondo's service was impeccable. We barely waited a minute for our beverages. Each time our server arrived at our table, they left nary a crum. The steaks came out in a timely fashion and on a sizzling plate. Our server had each of us cut into our steak as he shone a small flashlight to ensure we were content with how our steaks were cooked. The dim lighting provides the perfect setting for a luxurious steak dinner with friends, family, or business colleagues. Came here with my family to celebrate my moms birthday. The place is really nice and fancy. The decor was really cool and it's a nice place for special occasions. Our waiter was a little weird, he kind of hovered awkwardly around our table a lot looking at us without saying much which we thought was pretty funny in an awkward kind of way, but it wasn't a big deal. We ordered an array of different cuts of steak at different temps. We also ordered the artisanal cheese plate and the calamari as an appetizer. The cheese plate was very normal, nothing special about slapping four crackers on a plate with some blue cheese and one other kind of cheese and charging 16 dollars or something. The calamari was good, but nothing to write home about. Most of us ordered wedge salads and Caesar salads which were all really good. The steaks all came out at the same time and were cooked perfectly which is impressive for a seven top table. The only thing we all agreed on was that the steak didn't have enough salt on it. We also ordered creamed corn and Mac n cheese. The creamed corn was really good even though I would have been a little happier if they didn't put so much melted cheese on top of it. The Mac n cheese wasn't bad at all, but it also wasn't anything special. Overall we had a good experience here, but I wasn't the one that paid the massive bill at the end of the dinner. I did enjoy the food here, but if I was going to pay for a fancy steak dinner I don't think this would be my first choice. read more

I took my wife to Hondo's on February 16th for dinner and our experience was not what I had expected for the price. The service was slow, the prime rib was under seasoned and not as tender as it should have been, and the caramelized mushrooms were in a thick brown gravy which we ended up sending back (it's rare we send anything back). On the positive side, the salad and dessert were top notch. We also had drinks at the bar before being seated and the service was good. I remember years ago going to Hondo's for dinner and the service was spot on, the steaks were extraordinary, and I always felt that it was a very special night out. Even though it was always an expensive dinner, I felt it was worth it. I guess things have changed (I think Hondo's is owned by a restaurant group now) or my expectations were too high. Nonetheless, for the price I paid and the experience we received I will take Hondo's off my list of "special" places to go. They are just simply too expensive and not polished enough to justify the price. read more

A bunch of us ordered garlic mashes, and it was barely edible given the salt amount in there; so they went to waste.. it was quite obvious that the wait staff should have noticed something was wrong because so many piles of mash was untouched on the tables. Returned to Hondos last night. Still a terrific experience. My steak and lobster was perfect ( lobster amazingly good). The asparagus I have to not recommend now. It was very thick so not very soft and didn't have a lot of flavor because of the size. One of the managers did apologize and said it normally should be cooked more (still charged me the extra for it though - it isn't one of the included side choices). My wife's mushrooms were terrific I should have gone with those Also we went to bar before hand and the lady bar tending just wasn't real attentive. She was only one working so maybe just a bad day but just not as friendly as you would normally expect. Talk about bait and switch. On the sign outside the building, on the front door, and on the menu is "Hondo's Only Prime". So before I ordered my steak, I asked my server which steaks were Prime. She replied, "none of them. They are all choice". I laughed at her joke until I realized the joke was on me. Bad experience. This Steakhouse does not live up to the standards of the other high-end Steakhouses in the Richmond area. As a matter of fact - I've had better tasting steaks at Outback. I asked for my steak to be cooked medium-rare and they managed to get it wrong twice....both times being way over-cooked. Both my wife and I ordered their Seafood Bisque soup which was cold and literally tasted like watered down ranch dressing. To top it off....in all my years of fine-dining I've never experienced such slow service. Everything from beverages needing to be refilled to getting our dessert - it was a disaster. For the price I am paying for dinner, it is an insult to see table tents offering discounted days. This is not Lonestar. SERVICE: A+. Couldn't have complained. Onto the foods... APP: Silver Dollar Peppered Sea Scallops - $14.95 - Great. I was very pleased SOUPS: French Onion Soup Gratinee - $6.95 - Delicious. SALAD: Caesar Salad - $8.95 - Delicious. Dressing traditionally made with anchovies. STEAKS: Ribeye Steak (Boneless 16 oz.) - $43.50 New York Strip, Au Poivre - $45.50 My rib-eye was under cooked. No problem as they threw it back on the grill. But it had more fat on it that it should have. That didn't bother me as much as the bland taste. There was no seasoning on my steak. I had to add salt, pepper, and eventually asked for steak sauce. I shouldn't need steak sauce. My date's NY strip was good. It was seasoned well and the temperature was perfect. I got a side of vegetables and she had the Hondos Potatoes. The vegetables were good but the potatoes, again were bland. Not a big deal but I wish the steak plates were garnished or had something on it that added a little more presentation. We just got meat on a plate. lol DESSERT: I'm not sure what I had, but it tasted great and presentation was top notch. (See uploaded pic). Overall: It was a nice dinner. But I would like to try out another steakhouse. With wine and tip, the bill was close to $200 for two. With this price, I would expect to be MORE than satisfied! I was just satisfied. PS.
