We decided to stop by Honey Belly during our annual trip to SLO, and overall, it was a great experience! The food and service were incredible, and the quality of the meat was definitely a highlight. The burners were so powerful that everything around them, including the rice paper, side dishes, utensils, and even the table area, started heating up. This is our second visit and we were a little disappointed in the food. Our first visit was pretty good but for this particular visit not as great. We had the ayce dinner for a family of 4 dinner with 2 kids under 6 totaling out to $174 with tip. $40/adult and $25/kid which was pretty hefty imo. Upon entering, you approach the host and if you have kids, they have you stand next to a poster so they can see how tall your kids are and determine how much they will be charged. They seat you from there and start the grill. The tables are a bit on the smaller side but plates are cleared often so it all works out. There is a screen/iPad at the table so you can order as you go which is a featured convenience. K-Pop music playing the entire time. They provide a jug of water at the table. We had to replace it completely since it tasted really off. They also have vents at every table but you will still walk out smelling like kbbq. - We ordered mostly beef (brisket, Galbi, marinated Galbi, steak) with some pork belly which were mostly 3/5. - The plain Galbi was probably the best out of everything we ordered 4/5. - Banchan had a variety of bean sprouts, Japchae, kimchi, fish cakes, cucumbers, etc. which were all good 4/5 - Steamed Egg 3/5 - Seasoned Edamame 2/5 - Rice Noodle 4/5 For the experience, it was nice. Servers were nice. Food came out quick. For the price, not sure if we'd come back again. Last time our kids barely ate and they didn't charge them which was nice. It's located in downtown SLO so you have to pay for parking. If you're in the area, it never hurts to try if you're in the mood for Korean bbq. I read a Yelper state he's been to 30 AYCE KKBQ places but I've been to way more than this. Happened to be in SLO during Memorial Day weekend and initially my wife wanted ramen but this place (I wont name it), didn't have any ramen so we decided to go to Honey belly instead (which was on my places to try over the weekend) Guess we were lucky on a Sunday at 1 pm since the place wasn't that busy- no wait. So we got seated pretty quickly. The staff was great. Lots of young kids maybe college students. They came to check on us and brought our meats to the table. 5 stars So when it comes to ordering, it's all done on the touch screen pad on the table. You can only get 3 items at a time and the limit is 1.5 hours which is the dinner price and time (guess on Sunday at lunch it's always the dinner price) They use a cast iron grill which I found took a long time to sear the meat especially the thinly sliced pork belly. Considering you have just 1.5 hrs to eat, the first 10-15 mins is spent trying to get the meat to fully cook. My reasoning is that because the cast iron was cold, it took longer to heat up than the stainless steel in other Korean bbq places. 4 stars Banchan- decent variety. Staff is always willing to come and load up on those. My fav was the bean sprouts and the cucumber sides. 5 stars As for the meats, they were okay. I can't say they were premium cuts and they didn't have the galbi type I like and prefer. They kind of give a small portion of each item you ask and it's all conveniently fits in one plate (compared to other KKBQ places that serves each meat on their individual plate). 4 stars Would I say that Honey Belly is in my top 5 AYCE Korean places I've tried? No but it's a decent place and one I am surprise to see in downtown SLO. Either way, if you're in SLO and craving for Korean AYCE, it's not a bad place to go. Would I go back? The meat and the banchan were delicious. The sides are okay, I tried the dumplings, egg roles, and cheese corn. The dumplings and egg roles had a weird texture and were hard. The cheese corn seems like it's made with canned corn, which wasn't very good. The service was good, however no one came to fill up our banchan bowls this time. We only got one set of banchan for a table of five, which was too little. As far the cleanliness of the restaurant, the restaurant didn't seem to clean and the bathroom was dirty. read more

A new KBBQ restaurant in San Luis county! We came during dinner time and decided on AYCE (All You Can Eat) which is $43.99 per person with a 1.5 hour time limit. We basically had all the basic side dishes, an order of corn cheese, kimchi stew, rice, and rice paper. However, I wouldn't recommend the rice paper. At least when I visited it was tough and hard to break. For food, we got an assortment of: bulgogi, thin sliced brisket, spicy pork, thin sliced pork belly, garlic butter shrimp, and spicy baby octopus. For drinks, we got large Sapporos and Bok Bun Ja (Black Raspberry Wine). Everything was so so good and for the price?! Amazing. Honey Belly is hands down one of my favorite Korean BBQ spots, and I've been to over 30 of them, including a lot in Koreatown LA. This place stands out. The pricing is very fair for what you get. A lot of all-you-can-eat Korean BBQ places say unlimited, but after a couple rounds, service slows down and it starts to feel like they're limiting you. That's not the case here. They're constantly checking in and asking if you want more, and now they also have a tablet system where you can order additional items directly, which makes it even easier to keep things moving. The quality of the meats is high, and everything tastes fresh. They also change out the grill frequently, which makes a big difference, especially with marinated meats. The banchan selection is what you'd expect from a solid Korean BBQ spot, and they keep it refilled without you having to ask. They also have a good drink selection, and service overall has been consistently strong. Most of the time, I've been seated right away, and the longest I've ever waited was about five minutes. The only downside I've noticed was that the tablet we used during our last visit could have been cleaner, which wasn't great, but that's honestly a minor issue compared to everything else they do well. Parking is what you'd expect for downtown San Luis Obispo. It can be a little challenging, but you're usually within a short walk of the restaurant. Overall, I would highly recommend Honey Belly. It's one of those places where if we're craving Korean BBQ, we're willing to drive a couple hours just to come here. That says everything. read more

A great KBBQ place in downtown SLO! Honey Belly is a very popular place and you can expect to wait up to an hour at peak hours. Is it worth it? I think so. The meat quality is very good and we really enjoyed our meal. Their banchan is good, loved their kimchi, and pickled cucumbers. Now, as someone who loves korean bbq, I like to order pickled radish. Almost every kbbq place has it. And I was a little concerned when I was told at first they didn't have something like that. But our server came through and made sure I got my request. Got there when it opened and was quickly seated. Staff was friendly and attentive. Asked if we had had KBBQ before and explained how it worked. you have a 2 hour limit with have a limit of 3 meats per order and a banchan (side dishes) cart going around for refills. For dipping there as the brisket sauce with jalapeño, salt and pepper with sesame oil, and a spicy one. Banchan consisted of kimchi, cucumber kimchi, pickled daikon/radish, spicy bean sprouts, fish cake, and japchae. Japchae noodles were hard and lacked flavor. "Meats": Galbi and Galbi Sal - Good cuts had enough fat in them and the galbi nicely marinated and favorite meat this visit. Ribeye - It was okay, the cut just was tough. Shrimp - Sadly an order only comes with 2 pieces one per person? I thought that was weird. Ordered the mayo and garlic butter, got the butter but not the garlic flavor. They were out of thick cut pork belly and green mussels when I went. Extra sides: Cheese corn - Came in a little metal pan, nice and gooey! You really can't go wrong with cheese corn. Steamed egg - Another one of my favorites, I liked that they came out fresh with green onions. My table ordered two and one was perfect - the other was still very raw. Veggies - Came in a basket with various leaves too can wrap your meats in and surprisingly had sliced garlic and jalapeños in it as well. Rice - cooked well, not too mushy. The grill is stone, and instead of being changed out staff just scrapes off the residue and puts it in the water bowl on the table (maybe place the dirty water and spatula on the side of the table?) but an advantage of the scraping VS changing is that you don't have to wait for the new grill to come up to temperature. What I do appreciate is the ventilation in the place! The adjustable vents right above the grill help you not smell like KBBQ going home. I also like that for a part of 6 you get 2 grills - comparing to a lot of other places especially in OC you only get 2 grills if your party consists of 8 people or more. Bathroom was nice and clean, but doesn't have a changing table for those who have young children. read more

Wow! What a surprise tonight as we accidentally found the opening night of Honey Belly, an All- You-Can-Eat Korean BBQ restaurant. We met the owner, Justin, who helped explain how the menu works. You basically get two hours to cook table-side the delicious Korean beef, chicken and seafood. Our favorite was the fried rice Kimchi cooked in front of us. Justin was generous to not only offer complimentary drink, but one in our party had to leave early and he comped her meal! The restaurant is clean fully staffed with the most helpful servers that made us newcomers feel like pros when it came to ordering items from the menu. Honey Belly is a great place for KBBQ in SLO county. I've been here 3 times since they opened and it honestly got better each visit. The banchan (side dishes) and grill are ready for you when you sit down. They have a limited menu of beef,pork and chicken maybe compared to other places. But they also do have some soups/and appetizers! If it's your first time, they will take the time to explain how the process works. If you run out of side dishes they will have someone with a cart to do refills :) It's a smaller restaurant. Some tables have 2 grills per table so if you have a party of 2 you might have to share a table with another party. Let me just start off by saying the customer service was on par, I liked that there was a tablet at the table to keep ordering your meat selections without having to constantly flag down a waiter. The reason I'm giving a three stars is because the price is very high for the small selection they offer compared to other Korean bbq places. I understand it is mom and pop, however we do have another mom and pop Korean bbq here on the central coast and their price point starting is lower and has more options. For two people it came out to about $100. The amount I paid and what I got did not feel worth it. With that being said I won't be back unless there was some improvement either on price or selections offered. read more

Can't believe slo actually has a KBBQ restaurant downtown now! The fact that Honey Belly was immediately busy as soon as they opened speaks for itself - even on a Monday night at 530, the restaurant was pretty full and a wait started right after my party of 8 sat down! The food is delicious and fresh, with plenty of options, and the price is very reasonable! The only thing that costs "extra" is drinks, appetizers are included! Even though it was very busy, the acoustics weren't bad, and service was efficient! I'm sure it'll be nice in the fall/winter months, but during summer it was extremely warm inside even with the open concept, so no need to bring a jacket unless you run really cold! Some meats have two options - marinated and non-marinated. If you hate getting everything sticky and feeling full immediately - stick to the non-marinated meats. Otherwise, go all-in and enjoy! Well, I'll give them good effort with it still being new and working out the kinks for a first in SLO. But my review at this time is not so great from my visit. The wait time was as expected, but not a terrible amount of time to wait, about 35 mins for showing up at 5:50pm on a Monday. Surprisingly there's quite a lot of tables for this building space. Very nice presentation and set-up waited for us as we were seated. On a closer look though, I found the dishes very spotty with what I'm hoping was water marks. The dishes didn't look exactly clean and the water cups were not impressive. Not just water marks on the inside and out, but when we filled our glasses there was a very noticeable film in every water cup on the table. After it was addressed by the wait staff, clean cups were brought. On to the food. Nice selection of side dishes but the taste for several of them was a bit disappointing. The kimchi tasted a bit old, there wasn't the distinct crunch of the Napa and the leafy parts tasted very soft. The cucumber kimchi was hit and miss, I tasted both more fermented soft cucumber slices. Then the refill was much more crunchy as if the container was replenished with fresh sliced cucumbers but not enough time for them to absorb the kimchi flavor in. The rest were ok as far as flavor, but the dishes I feel were filled in haste and water marks again. I don't know if I would order another can of Dr Pepper for $4 here. Now the meat choices: the brisket was not served as shown in their photos for us, instead it was all lumped together and a bit of a chore to spread it apart. Their bulgogi had a good flavor to it, I was happy with it. The galbi sal I feel were thinner sliced than pictured, as when we started to cut the pieces into bite size we found two layers. Very thin. The galbi I was happy with. The ribeye was alright as well, nothing great but decent. Pork belly was good too, but the spicy pork belly was... different. It tasted as if it was from a different cut of the pig, it did not look anything like the regular pork belly or their picture of it they advertise. Instead it looked more similar to the bulgogi, pretty even meat/fat ratio here. I can't say I can give much of a review on the marinated chicken as for our party of 4 we were served about 2 tablespoons of it. There was more vegetables than chicken for this order. The two pieces I did get were small 1/2" diced size and pretty dry. Again, for our party of 4 we had ordered the mayo shrimp. We were served just 2 shrimps, not till we caught our waitress again did we have to order 2 more orders to get enough for 1 and a half shrimp for each of us. Was not impressed on their portions served not taking into account the size of the party they are serving. Butter garlic squid was kind of unimpressive, butter was there but the garlic they chose here was granulated garlic powder. And lastly to comment on would be the types of servers that were here. There was our one main waitress that I'd say did her best keeping up with everything going on. They had one server solely dedicated for refilling our side dishes and nothing else. I tried asking for rice for our table and was told they had to let our waitress know. Making some comparisons to other Korean BBQs I've visited (numerous across California) a simple order for rice can and could be done by any staff, even the busser. And now for the total for our dinner experience tonight. Splitting the check, so for just two of us. We had 1 Dr Pepper (can) $3.99 and one bottle of Cass beer $11.99 and 2 person dinner $79.98 with a total adding tax came out to $104.36 for two people. I think there's still a lot for this place to work on and fix but I am glad to have the option available in the area. I will try this place again later on and hopefully it'll be a better experience so that I can raise my rating for this establishment. read more

Having been to many KBBQ spots before, I was happy to see SLO got one! The restaurant offered a cozy atmosphere, and had some nice bar seating. They had a great spread of sides, especially the chili bean paste that I forget what it's called.
