We planned our wedding within a month of our date (yikes), and among the vendors we contacted, some took a week to respond (just to let us know they were unavailable), while others never responded at all. Carla responded almost immediately and worked with us right from the start. When we met with her for our tasting (gooooood luck trying to narrow down your choices), you could tell right away that this was someone who took great pride in her work; she was passionate, knowledgeable, and never pushed a design or size on us. In fact, she found ways to help us logistically, and found ways to keep costs down. Carla and her team delivered our beautiful, three-tiered, three flavored cake (morning jacket, apple toddy, and curious george) to our venue, and styled it better than the image we had provided for her. Our guest raved about the cake, but were even more impressed by the flavors. I'm biased, but I would argue that Honey Crumb has the best tasting wedding cakes I've ever had. Recently, I had inquired honeycrumb studio for my husband's quarantine birthday cake and turned out to be the most unprofessional customer service I have ever had.  1) My custom cake design was very simple with just one animal figure and few letters, but I still wanted to give Carla as much detail as possible so I wrote her in detail. I also inquired about the cost of the cake, but she replied with total cost without providing any breakdowns. This led to some follow up emails as I wanted to understand what I would pay for. I also asked her some questions regarding my figurine as it is better to understand the design requirements earlier than later. She also didn't respond to some of my emails which led me to send her follow up emails. All these led up to a few emails back and forth. (You will find out later why I have to mention "emails.")  2) A couple days later, I sent Carla an email saying I have decided to move forward with the cake. She replied back with an invoice but with extra 38% fees added to the invoice without any explanation. I replied back asking why my invoice has the extra fees added.  ----Her Response #1: "The cost of this order is accurately reflected in the invoice. If you'd like us to have the cake ready for next week, kindly submit payment no later than 5pm today." Carla clearly had not provided any details as to why my invoice has extra fees added, so I replied to her AGAIN, saying "I am happy to make the payment, but need some clarifications as I do not know why my order has extra 38% fees." ----Her Response #2: "The unprecedented volume of correspondence to which I've responded, in order to confirm the details of a 4" cake order, coupled with the extremely high volume of orders we have received for next week, has necessitated the addition of an administrative and supply/demand surcharge to your invoice. We understand if this is not acceptable to you and can cancel the invoice." I was shocked and dumbfounded.  3) Following was my response to her: "I do not believe that consulting my custom cake whether it'd be 4 inch or 40 inch would cost extra fees for a few extra emails. You calling my sincere emails to your shop as "unprecedented" and charging extra for this only seems to me as your emotions and retaliation. Also, your shop having more orders next week does not seem to do anything with my order's cost. Without any notice, adding extra charge (as you call it: admin and supply demand charge) in addition to the cost you have mentioned a few days ago does not seem like a professional customer service. Is there any mention of this (busy workshop + more emails = higher cake cost) anywhere during our communication?"  4) Later that day, Carla responded back saying her emotions are running high and that it was her "original sin" to take my small cake order. She also apologized for any offense and updated my invoice without the extra 38% fees.  5) Although I always strongly support small businesses and do most of my shopping from small businesses whenever and wherever possible, I have decided not to order a cake from Honeycrumb Cake Studio and will look elsewhere for custom cakes. Carla's action of adding extra fees (without any explanation, notice, or consent) for responding to my inquiry emails and for the fact that her shop being next week, is very shocking and only seemed improper. I also believe she should treat all customers the same, whether big or small, but from this incident, Carla clearly did not care for a customer with a small order (my order was still over $150). Again, I strongly support small businesses, but I believe these kinds of experiences can add up and sadly let customers turn to big businesses.. read more

We requested the London Fog cake (earl grey cake, with bergamot syrup and lavender buttercream) because I am a fan of lavender and floral desserts. I was told by the wedding planner that the London Fog is a favorite and often selected for weddings and it did not disappoint. Our cake was designed to align with the wedding color scheme and style, and it tasted amazing! Our guests were delighted with the cake and we were delighted to have leftover cake after the wedding. Wedding cakes are freakin' expensive. They're not just meant to be some delectable dessert, they should also be pieces of art. Carla and her team get that, so much so that they were the first wedding vendor that my fiance a) felt was worth the cost - that says a ton considering he doesn't have the sweet tooth that I have, and b) nearly pleaded with ME to move forward with after my sticker-shock reaction (normally it's the reverse!). Where did they go right? Too many ways to count. But here is a short list of what rocked: 1. Transparency. The site is easy to navigate and gives you pricing information so that you don't have to waste time if you know they're not within budget. 2. Responsiveness on initial reach out (and EVERY single interaction after) 3. Cake tasting. Phenomenal. Carla uses logic in ensuring that the cake to frosting ratio during the tasting will be as it will be on the big day. And if you don't devour the large tasting portions you're given, you get leftovers to take home with you to eat after having a meal and some alcohol so you can see if your new palate is swayed towards a different flavor than the initial taste-test. 4. Organization. Nothing seems to slip through the cracks with these guys. 5. The CAKE! It is out of this world. My personal favorite was the White Tuxedo though everyone loved the Strawberry cream frosting. Taste aside, the presentation was exquisite and flawless. 6. Their accommodations to dietary preferences. This is last for a reason. It is difficult to find a good baker, it is especially difficult to find a good baker who can pull off a ridiculously flavorful & memorable vegan cake. But, not for Honey Crumb. Though they are not exclusively vegan, you'd think they are because they've nailed their V recipe. We are very grateful for Carla and the team who welcomed us into their studio, gave us a private tour, were just a joy to work with from beginning to end and provided a gorgeous edible centerpiece for our event :) read more

When we first saw the amazing sugar flowers Carla creates for Honey Crumb cakes, we knew we had found our perfect cake - however we were planning an entirely plant-based wedding and have a high bar for our desserts so really hoped Honey Crumb would have something available for our wedding and the cake would taste as amazing as it looked. We were completely wow-ed on both counts. Not only does Honey Crumb have an extensive set of plant-based and dairy-free cake options but WOW are they delicious! The wedding cake was the detail that I concentrated the most of my energy on. We tasted cakes at four places, including driving all the way down to Kent (never doing that again). When we first looked at Honeycrumb, we thought that their prices were too high when there were other places at about half the price. But then we tried Carla's cakes and it was very quickly decided because not only were her cakes incredibly delicious and we had a hard time picking a flavour, but she was also wonderful to chat with, designed gorgeous cakes, and had allergy-friendly cakes for my mom as well. Our primary cake flavour is called "Curious George", which is a banana cake with nutella buttercream. It was absolutely incredible and a great throwback to the first baking we did together - a banana nut bread with chocolate chips. The flowers on our cake were sugar flowers, hand made by Carla and her team. The outside is a lavender ruffle ombré, which is just gorgeous. Her Instagram is incredible - they make far more beautiful cakes than what we got. Many people told us that it was the best wedding cake they had ever tasted. Our three year old guest even ate an entire slice by himself! As a vendor, she was responsive when we emailed her and good at following up with deadlines. We met with Carla on a weekend and pre-arranged which cakes we wanted to try. We later requested to try an additional two flavors and Carla was nice enough to arrange that for us. We ended up going with the pink champagne cake with raspberry mouse filling; and the citrus grove cake-- a lime cake with blood orange meringue filling. Both flavors were AMAZING. I like to bake, and the most important thing for me is that cakes be deliciously moist. Carla's cake were just that. Carla was wonderful to work with. She is an incredible professional who created a comprehensive contract we could sign online. It was really easy to communicate with her. When the wedding grew closer and we realized we would have 100 guests as opposed to 150, Carla adjusted our cake dimensions and the price accordingly without any trouble at all. Carla delivered our cake and arranged the fresh flowers the florist had left on the cake artfully while we were at the church. Our cake was gorgeous and tasted amazing.
