Don't understand all the 5 Star Reviews. I went here twice - hoping that the first visit was just a fluke. If you aren't a regular - they really don't care about helping you (there was a review that's now deleted that stated the same thing). I realize your regulars are your bread and butter but you could be a little nicer to those that aren't - I saw this both times I was here! So service gets 1 star.... The pecan sticky roll and the orange roll were good (not fantastic) and they were a bit overpriced for the size. They did have a really small selection both times I was there which was early in the morning (the cases looked like they should look at the end of the day when everything is picked over). My girls and I stopped in on a whim after looking on Yelp for a bakery near us at the time. They were getting ready to close early due to a street fair, but were very friendly and patient while my girls changed their mind a few times on what they wanted. Blue Vanilla made my daughter's 1st birthday cake a memorable one! Our overall experience was great. We got a 2-tiered cake and a smash cake. Our guests raved about the lemon cake. The owner is friendly and pleasant. I asked for them to deliver the cake since I was not confident in our ability to not damage the cake on the way to our venue. I was pleasantly surprised to see the owner hand delivering the cake, and loaning us cake stands at no extra charge. We've had other cupcake flavors and brunch as well. But I must say their lemon cake, french toasts and Eggs Benedict are worth the trip. I must say I miss going there because their hours are limited. Wish they were open again on Saturdays. read more

I saw the sign for Blue Vanilla when I was pulling out of B&E meats. I had no idea that the shop was even there (they opened up in September 2010) The shop is in the back of the "Butler Bar & Grill". It's not super noticeable from the main street, but they do have a sandwich board out and a sign on the side of the building. I am sure that won't be a problem for long, I am sure that in no time there will be a line that wraps around the block, of people waiting to sample their deliciousness. The shop is clean and simple which is perfect. Their are several tables in this little shop and yet it still feels open and uncluttered. Perfect place to take my girlfriends for lunch or stop in for hot cocoa's with my kiddo's. I ordered the pumpkin loaf w/ cream cheese frosting for myself, an orange cranberry scone for my mother, and a red velvet cupcake for the kiddo. I took one bite of my pumpkin bread and knew that there was no way the other goodies would make it home for intact (I live exactly 1 mile away). The pumpkin loaf was moist and so flavorful, the cream cheese frosting is AMAZING! The red velvet cupcake was beautiful, it was piled with... you guessed it, heavenly cream cheese frosting. The orange cranberry scone, what can I say about it but, Yummy! Each of my items where right around $2.00 and where good sized. I know that they serve daily soup and sandwiches and I believe that are about $7.50 for a 1/2 sandwich and a cup of soup. They also serve coffee, I am not a huge coffee drinker so I didn't look at the prices (yes, there are a few of us Seatteites who don't do coffee) I think my only complaint is that they aren't open 24 hours a day. read more

Went back to this place for lunch and it is still fantastic. They were doing pulled hawaiian pork sandwiches and mulligatawny soup. Both were fantastic. The sandwich had so much flavor and the meat was very tender and juicy. The roll was soft and flavorful. For an added treat, they put a slice of pineapple on the sandwich. The soup was amazing. The flavors were bold but not over powering. There was really nice amount of chicken for the portion I ordered and it was served over rice which made for filling meal. Wanted to meet a friend at a cafe near her place. Found Blue Vanilla on yelp :) decided to meet at noon for lunch and coffee before work. It was just us this last Tuesday. We ordered lunch and waited for the bakery to get their fresh cupcakes and eclairs finished. Yummy eclairs! Got the tuna melt it was good but nothing spectacular. The cafe is a decent size, didn't check if they have wifi. Parking on the street was plentiful and there are 2 or 3 spots in front of the cafe. It might be tough to find because you can't see the place from the street. Just turn where your gps tells you, even if you don't see the place. Right when you turn look for the green sign. The cafe is in the back. The cafe closed early the day we went. Was supposed to stay open until 3pm but they closed at 1. The staff wasn't in a hurry to push us out though, they didn't even tell us. We noticed when we left at 130pm and saw the sign they placed on the door. read more

I've stopped by a few times here on a Saturday morning for some breakfast before stopping by the farmers market. It's a very small cafe and parking can be hard to find. Saturday mornings are quite busy and some of their baked goods can sell out. I LOVE their orange rolls - so so delicious! And they make very good espresso drinks. I also recommend their French toast if you're dining in. It can get quite busy and full in the mornings on Saturdays, and when they're packed, their service tends to be a bit on the slow side, but I'm not in a hurry on a weekend, so it's not a big deal to me, however the last time I was there, an older couple were being a little snarky and complaining about how long it was taking for their food (wait time for food was a little over 30 mins that day). Like any restaurant, there's going to be days where they are shortstaffed and really busy and it may take a little while to get food out, but the food quality was awesome, so I'm not letting the wait time get in the way of this review. If you love baked goods, awesomely prepared coffee give this little place a shot! read more

I was just told by the owner why I had an odd experience at Blue Vanilla the day my coworker and I came for a visit. I had no idea what was going on and what happened was completely understandable. The food was not only memorable, it was wonderful. The upshot is that they care deeply about the customer experience here and I heartily recommend giving them a try if you happen to be in the area around the airport. It's worth the extra miles to Des Moines where great food is a rarity and to be appreciated when found. A real gem! It's not facing busy Marina View Drive and they've made a nice naturally lit space with a home kitchen feel to it. The pastry cases show off cookies, cupcakes, bread and pastries. They looked good but we were hungry! They brought the food pretty quickly. Julie's sandwich was perfectly browned and the tuna blend in it looked light and fluffy. She later wrote me and said it was the best tuna melt she's ever had. I asked ahead of time if the turkey sandwich had mayo in it. The girl said it had just what it said on the board: turkey, lingonberry spread and cream cheese with lettuce. I could swear it had mayo on it, but I enjoyed it very much anyway. The bread was so moist yet light with a great chew on the crust. I brought half of it home to my boyfriend who also declared the sandwich excellent. Super cute place, really nice staff. I had eggs, toast and sausage. The eggs were over easy, not over medium as I ordered. The sausage was a little pink in the middle which made me nervous so I didn't eat much of it. The rustic bread was yummy and the strawberry jam on the table is divine. Update - they now have redskins for breakfast, and they are tasty! Vegetarians can now do eggs + potatoes (and toast if desired, but I'd rather split a raspberry cream cheese muffin with the hubs because, well, duh) or French toast/Swedish pancakes.
