Deep sea sugar and salt has been a staple for many years. The cake has been exactly the dessert I want. Not too cakey. Not too sweet. Just right. While I always love their cakes, their location is a bit challenging and their wait times have increased. There's limited parking for the shop which makes it harder to stop by than before. I also didn't appreciate this past time waiting for 15 minutes for two cake slices. To me that's kind of crazy. While there were a couple of larger orders ahead if me, I still don't think it should take that long to get cake. On most days, I would give 5/5 just based on their cake. I dragged my foodie friend here with me on a sunny Saturday around 2pm during the Georgetown Carnival for some sweets from a place I heard through IG and kept stagnant on my radar for far too long. The inside literally is a garage for a house, as the two big windows on the left-hand side of the entrance are essentially garage doors, kinda like the interior of The Flour Box. There's merch on the same side, and on the right-hand side is the counter along with all their cake offerings. They serve some drinks here as well if you're not in the mood for sweets; otherwise prepare to be filled up here even though it's just desserts... I'm not sure if there was a way yo sample each of the cakes, since my friend and I were tempted for nearly ever flavor they had. We eventually settled on their ricotta coffee caramel cake, which comes with coffee CCF (cream cheese frosting according to staff), coffee syrup, caramel marscarpone (a kind of cheese found in tiramisu-like desserts like this one) and vanilla whip. For $11 before tax, this slice is deceptively huge and filling and overly rich in flavor for both me and my friend, essentially making it hard to finish in even two sittings if you're not into foods that fill you up too fast. From the ingredients and the mouthfeel I got when eating this, it's very cheesy... so much so that the bread layer became my palette cleanser, and even that part was relatively sweet in an already very sweet cake. Regardless, I got the nice coffee espresso tones along with some caramel in the brown layers of the cake. I eventually left those parts and the vanilla whip unfinished while eating the rest of the bread. Water, napkins and utensils are all self-serve here, and are located near the garbage and plate areas. My husband and I absolutely love their London Fog cake. My husband is Japanese and doesn't like things too sweet, but this is his favorite cake. He also hates to spend a lot on desserts and he will splurge to get a piece of cake. The slices are pretty big so one slice will usually be a treat for us twice, sharing it. Though we both agree that we think the slices aren't as big as before. We used to be able to nibble 3 times on the cake slices instead of twice. We are actually considering just buying a full cake to save on cost and freeze it and thaw whenever we want a special treat or for celebrations. Since we were celebrating my friend's birthday this weekend, she wanted to enjoy slices of cake with her friends and family here! Deep Sea Sugar & Salt is located in Georgetown; a more industrial area of Seattle. There was a small parking lot that is shared with some other local businesses in the area. I ordered a slice of the London Fog. My sister ordered a slice of Lemon Cream. My friend ordered the Strawberry Shortcake and Chocolate Blackout. Her parents ordered the Carrot Pineapple. All the cakes were absolutely delicious and HUGE. It was even bigger than I had imagined and seen online. The cakes were sweet and moist. Sweeter than I preferred, but it was great regardless. Definitely would not eat the slice in one sitting. The space is fairly large; with inside and outside seating. It was a nice day out, so we sat outside on one of the picnic tables. Came here for a little sweet treat before an MD appt. I had been seeing Deep Sea Sugar and Salt on my social media, so I had it on places to see. I would say one unfortuate thing with this place is the parking. The free parking is very small, there is some spots around the patio, but when we got there it was all full. There is a lot adjacent to their lot, but you have to pay and it was about 5$ for 30 minutes! Luckily someone was leaving so we managed to snag a spot. Lots of cake options when you walk in. They do not have "fancy" coffee drinks, but basic hot or iced coffee, tea, water and alcohol. Nice inside area as well as nice outdoor patio, part is covered, part is open. Average slice of cake is about $11, and you can also order cakes for a celebration. We had the 11 lb porter cake and the Lemon-nilla meringue cake, both were delicious. The chocolate cake was very rich and the meringue was piled high on the other. We had to try to only eat half and then saved the half for the next day! Staff was friendly. read more

We decided on the two specials of the month - Passionfruit Fudge and Key Lime Graham. We asked for the two to be packaged separately. I appreciate that they lined both the bottom and the top of the slices with parchment paper, so it transported well. Both flavors were so good! The passionfruit fudge was decadent but hard to resist! We had leftovers that we ate the next day, and they were still good. The combo of passionfruit and chocolate seemed weird to me at first, but somehow it worked. With the key lime, the cake was soaked in a honey syrup. It wasn't overly sweet, which was a good balance with the other components. I would definitely go back to try other flavors! read more

Finally got around to trying this place out! The cashier lady was so sweet! Inside had seating and water for customers. When learning they're sold out of the PB&J, I asked the cashier which slice I should get with the options I gave her. She suggested the salted caramel slice. The salted caramel slice was really gross. As if it was or almost foul. The cake had a flavor of acidity and expiration. Maybe thought there was rum or some type of alcohol in the slice, but there isn't. I was happy when they gave an extra caramel slice on the house but after a bite, no thank you. I couldn't finish the bite & it really disappointed us as it was my bf's birthday celebration. The cupcake was quite delicious as it had a nutty texture jam on the inside. Cake was soft, wasn't so sweet and loved the mixture of texture. The seasonal key lime slice was yummy. Super light graham cake flavor, good dense cake. Not so flavorful but it wasn't as disappointing as the other one. The lime flavor was the only star of the slice. The banana tres leches cake cup with Oreo was really incredible (from two months ago) and this month, the chocolate raspberry cake cup with Oreo was equally impressive. Who doesn't love a huge piece of cake??! After hearing multiple people recommend this place to me, I had to give it a try. I don't really have a sweet tooth so I was a bit worried that I would find all the pieces too sweet, but I was pleasantly surprised! I came at 4:30pm on a Saturday and a lot of the flavors were unfortunately sold out. I ended up getting a slice of the banana coffee caramel and a slice of lemon cream to share with my boyfriend. My favorite was the banana coffee caramel slice and I will be thinking about this for a long time because it was so good! The coffee cream on top was delightfully bold and it balanced the banana cake taste. The piece was really sweet but I think all of the flavors helped add much needed depth. Both slices of cake were really moist. The lemon cake tasted very classic but I wish it was a bit more tart. The olive oil cake aspect elevated the cake from being a basic lemon cake. There is indoor and outdoor seating. I liked the color scheme of the indoor seating area and I felt that there were a lot of places to sit. The service was to the point and the cake slices were brought out promptly. Overall, this place is great if you have a sweet tooth. Two slices of cake plus a cupcake ended up costing over $30ish. The ginger molasses cupcake was doable, not overwhelmingly sweet to the point where you couldn't finish it. Their cake slices are sized like two typical slices combined, so I'd recommend sharing one if you're getting a cake slice rather than a cupcake. Unless you loveeee sugarrr! That said, the ginger molasses slice cake was far too sweet for me. My partner and I both took two small bites and couldn't continue. It honestly felt like eating two big spoonfuls of brown sugar. One compliment I'll give them is that the cake is very moist. The London Fog cake wasn't too bad. It wasn't overly sweet and was fairly tolerable, with a mild hint of Earl Grey. I probably won't come back unless I'm sharing a cupcake with someone, since the cake slices are too expensive for what they are. YUM!!! I learned about Deep Sea when I was on Instagram. The cakes looked so good that I had to go try them. I couldn't put it into action for a few months because Georgetown is far from Ballard, where I'm based, and I had no idea what the neighborhood is like. Anyways, on my birthday morning, I decided to give it a try because I had to be in a nearby area in the afternoon for another event. And it didn't disappoint! I went in thinking I want to get a cupcake and a cake slice, but the cake options looked better than the cupcakes so I ended up with two slices of cake. With coffee, it came to a hefty price of $30. I thought I wouldn't go over $30, but Seattle tax is freaking hefty so that was why. For coffee options, they only offer self served drip coffee for $4.5. I'm happy with my drip coffee, it was good, but I wish they didn't jack up the coffee price, because the cake is expensive already and you're pouring the drink yourself. I just assumed it's bottomless coffee. I bought the chocolate blackout and the carrot cake. I love it when bakeries don't put coconut flakes in the carrot cake because that's my least favorite thing. They were both great. Chocolate cake flavor is kind of monotonous so I found myself getting bored of it fairly quickly. Also, I'm not sure if I like the taste of chocolate cream cheese frosting. In my opinion, the chocolate and cheese flavors were a bit too much. Carrot cake was so, so good. They do their plain cream cheese frosting great. There is a good amount of seats indoor and I saw there are some seats right outside as well. I wonder bikers take a cake break here, because the neighborhood seemed bike friendly. Staff was nice and helpful. I brought a large Tupperware with me because I knew I won't finish it in one sitting. Initially, I asked the cakes to go and they put each slice in individual compostable boxes. I'm not a huge fan of those boxes because it can come undone easily for the cakes to fly out, and they're bulky. Fortunately, they wrapped the slices with two wax papers, so I was able to move them into the Tupperware easily. Cakes are really flavorful with a perfectly moist crumb. The frosting tastes really good to the point that I indulged rather than scrape it off. We tried the triple chocolate, blackberry pistachio, London fog, and coffee cardamom. All of them were so unique and yummy and I'd want to try the other flavors they have. 4 large slices were about $50. They do serve drip coffee which looked like self-serve type station by the napkins and utensils. Who knows how fresh that was. Somewhat off-putting. I looked around and nobody had any drinks at all so I did not order one. Milk would've been great, but I saw someone else's almost $3 shot glass of milk and couldn't do it out of principal. The cream cheese frosting tasted pretty good, but it's again too sweet and the ratio of frosting to actual cake was unevenly balanced. Too much frosting vs. actual cake. Not to mention this was the thinnest slice of cake I think I've ever received eating out and definitely for this price point. It was worth a try once for us. Didn't stand up to the hype. The signage on the door says "Ice" is not welcome, but then inside the shop there is another sign by the entry to behind the counter saying something like only residents and invited guests, below which then says something like we welcome all illegals and refugees. I finally tried Deep Sea after hearing about it for so long. There's a small and tight parking lot immediately in the Deep Sea lot and then a roomy paid lot next to it. Inside has lots of seating and there's outside seating as well. They display their available cake in the window so you can see all the flavors there. At $11 to $11.50 per slice, Deep Sea made it worth it. There's many tiers to their slices/cakes so one slice is enough for 2-3 people. The cakes were moist with unique flavors but pretty forward on the cream cheese icing. Highly recommend stopping by especially if they have an interesting flavor. When I drove up and saw how busy it was I got excited. I thought, 'wow! This place must be amazing since there's a lot of people standing in line and there was a 20-minute wait to get your cake order!' The people working when I went were friendly and pleasant with the customers. Kinda dark inside, nothing to write home about, but I didn't come here for the look of the place. I raced home to dig into the cakes because I'd heard so much about the place and the reviews looked good. I was so disappointed! Let's take the chocolate first - looks wet/dense, texture was kinda sticky, flavor wasn't all that pleasant. The buttercream was good though! The next cake had a similar texture, and flavor. The buttercream, again, was delicious, but the rose colored buttercream on top rivaled eating an actual rose petal - it was that forward in flavor - so unpleasant. Different baked goods, the big draw being cupcakes and cakes, whole or slices. The slices are very big so we split one. Know that it's quite pricey, too. Stopped by after brunch to satisfy my sweet tooth and tried the cookies and cream cake while my boyfriend went for the s'mores cupcake. The cookies and cream cake was great! It was moist and not too sweet. I love dark chocolate cakes. I'll definitely be coming back for another slice or to try a new flavor. The s'mores cupcake was a bit dry for my taste. The shop itself is spacious with plenty of seating and a really cute, cozy interior--great for hanging out or catching up with friends. With a combo Thanksgiving and birthday celebration, I pre-ordered the one dozen of London Fog (Earl Grey flavor) cupcakes. The pickup process was swift and easy. They opened on a Wednesday, a day normally closed, to accommodate the Thanksgiving pickups. It was quite literally a 120-seconds pickup. They didn't sell any single slices on the Wed; I didn't get to try anything else. They are booked far in advance during holiday season. For example, it is Dec 19th as of this writing; they are fully booked for Christmas orders. The next availability is after Christmas break on Dec 28th. Our dozen London Fog cupcakes were a hit at Thanksgiving dinner. The adults vocally liked it better than the college age young adults. The grandpa, who is normally nonchalant, was particularly enthusiastic for it. That was fun to watch. The 1 dozen cupcakes costed $60. It was money well spent. read more

It was so delicious, the cake and frosting ratio and sweetness balances each other out and the texture of the cake is fluffy, slightly dense, and melts in the mouth. You'll definitely want to bring a date, these slices of cake are epic! There are so many delightful flavors and inventive creations to choose from, I'd suggest viewing their menu ahead of time. You won't want to hold up the line like I did, spiraling in indecision. I appreciate establishments that rotate their menu, allowing them to use seasonal, local ingredients harvested when their flavor hits a high note of perfection. What they offer frequently changes -- some of our favorites have been London Fog (Earl Grey tea flavors), Salted Caramel, and Vanilla Bean ... but you have to see what they have and go for it. The interior is now accessible -- it used to be that one waited in line outside forever, but now the inside is separate from the delivery window which is in an exterior wall. Once you've either decided to risk whatever they have on hand for the day's first-come-first-served approach, you take your chance -- or if you've reserved in advance (and you may not get lucky on your first try), then picking up at the window is easy. I was finally able to try this infamous cake shop! I did an online pick up order for my slices which was super easy inconvenience. When I arrived, it definitely was busy, but the line move fast and the employees were efficient. The only downside is there isn't much parking, and you do have to pay for parking in some spits. I tried the lemon cream and pink champagne. Both were sooo good. It's soaked so it is very rich, juicy, and filling. If you want more of a fluffy texture this isn't for you. They have the menu on the wall with the flavors available and as well as their seasonal flavors. They also some of the cakes on display so that you can see what they look like with a description of the cake itself. The line did move very fast and there is seating there to enjoy the cakes in house. You do bus your own table when done. We ordered a few slices and they were all delicious and decadent. The salted caramel with a nice caramel glaze, this was on the sweeter side. The butterfinger seemed to the same chocolate cake but the icing and peanut butter made this one of my favorite slices. There were also small specs of butterfinger candies in it. The strawberry shortcake was really good as well. The icing was light and the perfectly complimented the cake and strawberry filling. The slices are around the $10+ mark for each slice and they also offer small cupcakes. We had plenty leftover and took the cakes home. They are most definitely better served chilled than at room temperature. read more

finally went a bit down south and tried out this place! ive heard a lot about it so im glad i finally got to check it out. i came in at about 3 pm and im glad i went at the time i did because if i came any later there wouldn't be any cake! there were unfortunately only three flavors left for the day so i tried the funfetti with cream cheese frosting (really wanted to try the pumpkin :(( i tried a bite when i first got it and it was chilled so the cake was a bit firm. after coming home and having a second taste, the cake definitely softened up and was super moist. the cream cheese frosting was so yummy and not overly sweet. super good cake! taking a star off because $12 for one cake slice is kind of insane.. read more

My favorite place to indulge for cake! My husband picked some up for me and I was left speechless by how tasty these cake slices were! Shout out to Deep Sea for saving my husband's birthday! I was planning a last minute surprise party, and of course every cake place I called needed at least 1 week notice. (Grocery store cakes were not an option for my picky husband!!) When I called Deep Sea, they were very helpful and let me know that they make a limited amount of whole cakes each day and you can order online the morning of, for pick up later in the day. I was able to get the two delicious flavors I wanted (Funfetti and PB&J). I love that they only use cream cheese frosting!! No pictures. Too delicious. I saw a reel on IG, so while I was out in town I decided to stop and give it a shot. Cake descriptions on the website but you have to go in for slice and cupcake availability- you can't pre-order slices. The shop is easy to get to with ample close parking. Inside is cute and industrial. The shop folks were lovely as well, really warm and inviting. We selected 4 slices- malted chocolate, blackout cake, funfetti, and carrot pineapple. All the whole cakes were simply decorated, but beautiful. The hubs said his funfetti cake was okay, but not outstanding. I thought it was more of a white butter cake with nice chewy sprinkles. Delicious, but maybe not the explosion he was expecting. A classic birthday cake, elevated. The blackout cake has a really rich flavor without being overwhelming- a more milk chocolate Matilda cake vibe. The carrot pineapple is pretty much a perfect carrot cake- not spice or nut, but CARROT, in the most beautiful way. The buttercream on the carrot cake is the best I can remember having- butter flavor and a smooth, sweet cream taste. But all those accolades aside- the chocolate malt cake is, simply put, the cake I would go back for. The cake itself is a perfect, moist chocolate malt flavor, without an artificial tasting aftertaste. The frosting is if they made the inside of a malted milk chocolate candy into a light, fluffy buttercream, without the cloying sweetness. I am not a huge sweets person, but cake is a special weakness. This may be the best cakery I've been to- and one I will gladly pay for. read more

The cake here is pretty good. Came in on a Friday and it was pretty crowded, parking is tight but the line in store moves quick. Lots of different cake flavors. I got the strawberry chocolate fudge and it was moist and delicious. The prices are pretty high for the size of the cake slice, otherwise no complaints. read more

The variety comes with specials, but there are some tasty offerings here. I had heard that some of the cakes might be dry, but that was not my experience. I brought some slices for my friend's birthday and they were a huge hit. I need to come again. I have managed to find a few great bakeries that fairly close in proximity to me, but none of them compare to Deep Sea Sugar & Salt. The attention to every single detail is by far one of the best (look at how uniformed each layer of my 6' poppyseed cake.) I typically prefer a cookie, or mini dessert for my birthday because traditionally cakes are overly sweet and loaded with more icing than cake, or the cake itself is dry but the Black Currant Poppyseed cake was just the opposite. The flavor of the vanilla, and black currant was the perfect balance of subtle sweetness and brightness from the black currant jam was EXACTLY what I wanted; it was PERFECT. My husband has already requested the seasonal Strawberry Shortcake for his birthday next month. If you're considering just going to the bakery to order a variety of slices I highly recommend going early, when I went to pick my cake up there was a quarter of one cake left to slice and that was at 1pm. The online ordering process is really easy, and allows for specific customization (flower, gold leaf, and script add ons.) The customer service was great and really prompt; there is also a pick up window for preorders. The bakery itself is fairly large, accessible parking, and has ample indoor seating for customers to enjoy their slices; again come early if you want to select from a variety of flavors.
