My 29-year-old son and his 27-year-old girlfriend recently stopped at Tsang's while waiting for a takeout order. They sat at the bar and attempted to order drinks. The bartender asked for identification. My son's girlfriend presented an international driver's license, but the bartender would not accept it. She also offered a photo of her passport, which was refused as well. Both the bartender and manager agreed that these forms of identification were not acceptable, despite the fact that these same forms of identification had reportedly been accepted on previous visits. What happened next was even more disturbing. While they were sitting at the bar, another customer directed a comment toward my son's girlfriend, telling her to "make sure you always carry your paperwork." The comment was delivered in a disparaging and bigoted manner and was completely unacceptable. We understand that restaurants have policies regarding identification, and we would have respected a simple, courteous explanation of those policies. What we cannot accept is the way my son and his girlfriend were treated, particularly when an interaction that could have been handled respectfully instead left them feeling singled out, humiliated, and possibly racially profiled. For a family that has been loyal to Tsang's for years, this experience was deeply upsetting. We have supported this restaurant for a long time, and it is heartbreaking to say that our family will not be returning to Tsang's Village Cafe. Businesses have a responsibility to treat every customer with dignity and respect. Regardless of a person's background or where they are from, no one should leave a restaurant feeling that they were made to feel unwelcome or less than others.

Egg Roll: Crisp shell with an interesting concoction inside, boasting chopped celery, carrots (not common), pork crumbles, and an unusual seasoning sort of along the lines of five spice but even more fragrant. A little crunchy, a little moist. Above average. Wontons: Crunchy. Nothing special but nothing wrong with them. Standard. Spareribs: Good sized bones with white cross sections, bright red glaze adequately applied, and some char in almost every bite. Juices trickling. Lobster Sauce: Dark, smooth, strong flavored, not salty, and just a hint of gloppy. Good cling to the rice when added and very enjoyable for both flavor and texture. Definitely above average. Moo Goo Gai Pan: This is a dish I haven't had for at least 30 years, so I can't really compare to the competition. The chicken was moist with fantastic seasoning. The unexpected surprise were the fries. The fries here are outstanding. And they achieve something that I've never seen anywhere else: their fries are "pillowy". They are crispy on the outside, but the inside is remarkably moist and fluffy.
