Very sad to see these one star review people has no idea what they're getting. So not all "Chinese food" are made the same, this place offer authentic Cantonese style food I grew up in Hong Kong and this style are food that I used to get, do not expect your typical panda style fast food with extra syrupy sauce. They have steam fish here you definitely don't see it at the other Chinese food restaurant. If you want some authentic Cantonese style Chinese food this is the place. There are a lot of great food out there that is not Cantonese but still somewhat of Chinese. If I won orange chicken I wouldn't come to this place, I would go to Panda Express, if I want pad thai I wouldn't come to this place I would go to Narai Thai. The low rating probably because it's not what people were expecting or would imagine the Chinese food they're getting. Very friendly service. Not sure what previous reviews are saying. The server said it changed owners 5 years ago. Food was delicious. Ordered Mongolian beef, kung pao chicken, and chicken lo mein. Definitely a place you should try. The ambiance isn't the best but you aren't going for the way the place looks you are going for the delicious food. If you're a fan of PF Changs this is the best place to go instead of PF Changs. It's affordable and not ridiculously overpriced and they serve huge portions. It comes with tea didn't try it but my family loved it and a side of steamed white rice or fried rice. This is my second time going to it and outstanding food. Our server was so nice he even greeted us at the door like made you feel comfortable and welcomed. Try it at least once before judging it on previous reviews. In all honesty I saw previous reviews and was a bit hesitant at first but a family member recommended it to me and I'm glad they did. Its my go to restaurant when I am craving Mongolian beef. Please go try this place they need more customers and deserve more customers. Very underrated place. Also noticed someone was smoking saw previous reviews and also smelled cigarettes right before we were about to leave. The only bad part so order takeout if you don't want to smell it. We have been going here for about 8 years or so. I have not been able to find a good place by where we live so we make the 30 minute drive whenever we are craving the food. The food is always delicious. We usually order Orange chicken, beef and broccoli, pork fried rice and chicken wonton soup. Sometimes we get the lo mein with chicken as well. Portion sizes are good that we usually have left overs for the next day. The staff always provides us with amazing service and I appreciate them for accommodating our request for no seafood in the wonton soup. read more

This is one of the best Chinese Restaurants around. Honestly, I love Chinese food and this place is tied for number 1. The food is ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS. They are also very nice and welcoming. I have been going here for years with my mom. Our favorite dishes include Mongolian Beef, Fish with Black Bean Sauce and our absolute favorite is the Pan Friend Noodles. Everyone we bring here loves this place too. It is perfect for lunch and take out. We order from here at least once a month whenever my mom and I want to pull a "work all weekend" weekend. This restaurant has amazing service, the owners are very friendly and the food was delicious! Had the Orange chicken, chicken lo mein, green bean with pork, and the spicy pork chop. I enjoyed the orange chicken and green beans the most the chicken was soft and not crunchy/hard like other places, the sauce was also very good it wasn't overpowering so I could taste the chicken and not just sauce. Usually I don't like vegetable dishes but the it had such a good flavor that I enjoyed the green beans more than the pork. The portion were large enough for a group of 3 which was great because my group of friends love to eat! The experience was great and will be visiting again and trying some of the other dishes that were recommended. read more

My aunt was so excited when she took us here, she says she loves the food and orders it mostly to-go all the time. I would say you should take it to-go too, because the interior is dark and narrow and gives it a seedy feel. I would be okay with this if the food was stellar, but it was lacking in that department as well. The mabo tofu (?) was good, but we got a beef dish where the meat had a very strange rubbery/chewy consistency to it. I just slathered it in more sauce. Our Shrimp with Lobster Sauce was 80% sauce, 20% shrimp...seriously there were about 10 pieces of shrimp in there. The service was also not great. I don't expect much service when it comes to Chinese restaurants, but the woman waiting on us was so sullen. Oh yeah, and I found a hair in my food! I don't think it's that big of a deal, but I decided to inform them so they could be more careful next time. Despite all of this, Hong Kong Chef has dirt cheap prices. Their lunch special is an especially good bargain for what it consists of (soup, rice, and dish). I would still much rather go here than eat at Panda Express. Decided to try something new and per the yelp reviews, this place had some good reviews when I searched for Chinese food. It's not your typical Chinese food place, there's no combo #1 w/a side of chow mein.. It was something new, something different - would I go back, maybe. Had the #2 combo with: - wonton soup --very delicious, I would come back just for this -eggroll --didn't like it much, I've had better -fried shrimp --it was ok -shrimp chop suey --first time having this dish & I liked it, ate most of the veggies too -fried rice yeung chow style --also a new item I've never had, was a little different due to the ingredients in it but I liked it My husband had the chicken w/lemon sauce - tried it out and it was good -decided to go on a weekday for dinner and there were not many customers, most were ordering take-out. -the waitress was friendly and brought the items out one by one, but never came back to check on us, give us more napkins, or offer us refills on our water. This is cooked to order delicious. Tonight's dinner included beef broccoli, spicy fried pork chops, seafood pan fried noodles, fried shrimp appetizer's and seafood with corn soup. They've got real cheap lunch specials, which are also served family style and include rice and soup, so definitely worth it. And just an fyi: Orange chicken isn't on the menu, but they do make it, so don't be afraid to order it. Turns in your order and the chef starts to cooking, I say under 10 mins it's done, that fast. The elderly lady brings out your food and you start to eating some great tasting hot Chinese food. Hong Kong chef is located in the plaza where the old McDonald's is on the the corner of Lakewood Blvd. and Florence Ave. It's a little "hole in the wall" kind of place and the service is excellent and very welcoming. It seats about 34-38 people. My favorite is the beef noodle soup, with steamed bok choy, snow peas, carrots and medium sized noodles. The soup stock is clear and flavorful and the portions are very generous. I love their home-made chili oil with peppers it goes well with the soup and mixed with rice. The free bottomless pots of hot tea are a plus. I notice less and less Chinese restaurants do this anymore. I would also like to add that the Rock Cod Fillet in Lemon sauce is delicious... when my family and I dine here we order the Shrimp Pan fried noodles, beef with green beans and the rock cod fillet in lemon sauce. read more

Mind you, this is more american chinese food than authentic. I think it really fairs with more american taste so some foods is very fast food like chinese. Sorry. I was really hoping this place was better then a 3 star since most fast food Chinese places aren't. But this one lagged all over. Especially that it's not really fast food. It's a sit down kind of wait place. But not appealing to the eye. Regardless it lagged in all aspects. I went with their lunch specials which I read on here are delicious and $5.50. Actually, they're $6 and $7 + Following: The orange chicken is descent but more like nuggets with an okay breading and sauce. The green bean and beef was a step down. Certainly NOT fresh green beans and lacking beef and flavor. Tons of green beans though, lol. The fried rice which each dish came with was no better then burnt yuck. I added soy sauce and even catch up to try to mask the bad taste but ended up tossing it out. On to the last, but not worst, chicken low mien. Okay, not bad, BUT...and I mean BUT it came with fried rice. WTF! Grrr, who put's rice of any kind in with low mien? Can I be more negative? Yes. I'm not sure if they're just unhappy people working there (there was only two and I am sure they own it). But I did not see a smile at anytime. And the only talk with customers was the orders. If you get food to go you don't get soup (maybe that wasn't such a bad thing). I'm reminded of the rice. Last but certainly worst. It came with fortune cookies that were unwrapped. Unwrapped? Gross. But we have also eaten here with her. The kids like their fried cod with lemon sauce. Salted pork chop is also one of my favs. And shrimp chow mein completes our usual order.
