Bbq pork is the highlight as you can distinctly tell the red layer penetrates into the meat. A bit dry but very flavorful. Chinese sausage was closer to an American sausage and tasted boiled. Portion was pretty good for $11 and there was plenty of rice underneath. Pickled cucumber is cut fairly large and the pickling wasn't done that well. Closer to a cucumber with dressing more so than pickled. Still, crunchy texture with the tanginess of pickling. Spicy bamboo was the highlight as the bamboo was crunchy and held firm. It was NOT that spicy so fear not but definitely give it a try as it has the warmth of chili oil. There's always a lot of people coming in and out during mealtimes to grab their to go order as well as people who ordered in person and are waiting for their food, so it gets pretty crowded in the small space. For years, I've loved going to this place for the sheer amount of choices...always something for everybody in the family. They also used to give good quantity and tasty food at a reasonable price. I'm sad to report that after the past couple of visits, this place has continued to turn for the worse and is on a steep decline, at least for us. I'll list the reasons why. Some of the items still taste okay, but too many I've found have disappointed these days. Service: This place has transformed a few times over the past couple of covid years. Its understandable that their dining area disappeared for a while, reappeared, and now a smaller seating area appears to be what they've settled on. I'm fine with that. There is even an electronic kiosk for you to order food so you don't have to interact with the front staff. However, the staff could use some improvement. The last few times I've found myself waiting for my food for nearly 30 minutes because of lack of communication. I'll be told my order is not ready, when I see it sitting behind the ladies up front. Or, its just sitting there cause they never called my number. I also ask for 1lb of some BBQ and they'd give me a whole piece, out of convenience for them. Overall, I'm really disappointed in the direction of this restaurant and likely have had my last visit for the foreseeable future. I dropped by in person to pick up some of their BBQ meats. They are still doing takeout only. I asked for half a pound each of the BBQ pork (~$14/lb) and roasted crispy pork (~$17/lb), as well as 1/4 roasted duck ($10.95). The cashier rang up my order and charged me close to $11 for each type of pork. Some reviewers complained on here that they give you less meat than you pay for. I was worried that the same thing happened to me, so I weighed my order when I got home. Don't worry, y'all-- I got as much as I paid for. I guess they just gave me a little more meat than what I originally asked for! I was a huge fan of everything I got. The roasted duck was extremely savory. While it wasn't crispy, the duck skin was full of fat that clung to all the spices and made the meat super tender. (A friend recommended air-frying the duck to crisp up the skin-- I'll have to try that next time) The spices added a subtle sweetness and smokiness that complimented the fatty skin and perfectly brined meat. Although the duck came with some sauce on the side, it did not need the sauce at all! The BBQ pork came with a mixture of leaner cuts of pork and cuts that had fat marbled throughout. I was pleasantly surprised that the leaner cuts weren't dry at all. The BBQ pork was sweet and savory, and the marinade flavor penetrated through the entire piece of meat. I ended up having some of the pork when it got cold and it was still super delicious. My favorite was by far the roasted crispy pork. While the duck and BBQ pork had a more complex sweet-smoky-savory flavor profile, the roasted crispy pork was mostly savory. However, the pork was SO tender and juicy! The pork did not need any sauce at all because the brine soaked through all of the meat. The skin was super crispy which added so much fun texture to the tender pork. Since after the pandemic they have greatly reduced their dining space - this is primarily a take-up spot where you grab your order to go but there are some tables that you can grab on a first-come-first-serve basis. This is my go-to spot for crispy roasted duck. It is cooked so well and you can get it by half or whole duck and they do chop it up for you. My family is not a fan of turkey so this was where we went to get our thanksgiving bird, the duck. Another go-to on the menu is the two or three bbq protein with rice platter. First round in Boston...walk around Chinatown and found this place...look interesting and the food was reasonable....they have kiosk order and then you can order, pay and wait for your number to be called. I ordered the three meat combo and the potsticker...I ended up having only the duck and the crispy pork...the duck Was not crispy but the pork was. I guess I made a wrong order and did not taste the pork bbq..anyway I did not find any sauce for the duck and the sauce for the crispy pork was not that sticky..the thing that worries me is that I was seated facing the service counter. Saw the guy cleaning the milk tea counter and touched the mop with his hands with gloves. As soon as I saw this I kept my close to home if he will change gloves. He never did, touch the milk tea sealant machine, touch the cup tea that was sealed, touch the to go food and the containers and plastic. I decide to talk to manager outside and try to correct this habit. I don't want to offend anyone but I think it's my responsibility to inform anyone. It has been a long time since I first visited Hong Kong Eatery in 2016. But, during this time, I still visited Chinatown quite frequently and consistently saw Hong Kong Eatery's steamy window filled with roast duck, pork, and other delicacies. So, on this day when I was particularly hungry, I decided to return for a nice sit-down dinner of duck and a noodle dish. When I entered the restaurant I was a little disorientated because it looked like they had remodeled. The small tables that once lined the wall and center of the space were reduced to a small section and replaced by a large counter area complete with kiosks. After standing in the takeout pick-up line for 5 minutes I was told that the traditional sit-down service they offered back in the day was replaced with the kiosks and that was where I needed to place my order. So, I fumbled through that process and when my food arrived I was a little disappointed. First, the noodle dish I ordered wasn't what I thought I was ordering. It's really not the restaurant's fault, but perhaps this mix-up could have been avoided if they still offered table service. Customers simply cannot ask a kiosk a question. But, the biggest disappointment was the duck. To my surprise, it was ice cold. Like it was being stored in a refrigerator. This discovery was a stark contrast to the expectation of getting one of the warm glistening ducks on display in the window. And the real kick in the teeth was all this food wasn't cheap. And what I enjoyed the most were the dipping sauces and free water at the self-serve station next to the kiosks. Sorry, I really can't see myself returning. I've been to Boston PLENTY of times to visit family as well as for work. And sure, I've dined at institutions and other "must eats" during my travels. So by all means, while strolling around Beantown, be sure to stop in the Regina Pizzeria and have The Giambotta; indulge in a huge pastrami sandwich at Sam LaGrassa's; and of course, go to the Union Oyster House for a bowl of their legendary New England clam chowder. However, after a few days, I always get a hankering for my own kind of comfort food, aka Cantonese cuisine. Anytime I see the words "Hong Kong" in the title of a restaurant, my interest is immediately piqued, mainly because I want to see if that place can justify having my birthplace in its name. I also was encouraged that Hong Kong Eatery received high marks from long time trusted Yelper (and one time Bostonian) Susan H, so I ventured into the compact section of the Boston Chinatown neighborhood in search of some tasty grub. At first glance, this joint has the familiar trappings of a classic Chinese restaurants found all along the East Coast. The front window has a selection of roasted and barbecued meats, and the interior has tightly arranged tables to maximize the number of people that can get squeezed into the cramped dining room. As a side note, what's up with EVERY Chinese restaurant needing to have long-walls that are lined with mirrors? When trying a new Cantonese restaurant, always need to determine how the kitchen prepares the classic Wonton Soup. I was a bit on the hungry side since I walked about 20 min from my hotel, so I also added two meats to my dish - some bbq char siu pork and Chinese style beef brisket. Let me say up front, the wontons themselves were delicious. The dumpling skin was tightly wrapped around a package of seasoned pork and shrimp based filling. And unlike at some places which serves puny wontons, these versions were a good size. I deduct some stars since the accompanying meats, particularly the char siu was very subpar. Usually good char siu is tender with a nice glaze which is not overly sweet, but where you can also taste hints of five spice and soy sauce. The roasted pork here was tough and tasted like it had been hanging in the window too long resulting in the meat drying out. Beef brisket was okay. Some pieces were very tender, whereas, other pieces were on the fatty side and too tough. IMHO, not worth the extra $3. This place is pretty popular with the locals and I observed LOTS of students from the numerous colleges popping in for take out and dishes of roasted meats over rice platters. It's a challenge to rate this place, especially if you've been to other more famous Chinatown neighborhoods in places like NY and San Fran. But overall, this place ain't bad and will satisfy the craving for good Cantonese food if visiting Boston. read more

Nothing stood out to be delicious. Might need to try Chinatown cafe and see how their bbq is doing. Many thanks to Yelp friend, David R., who recommended this place to me. Before PMing David, we had our eye on a different restaurant in Chinatown---one that had been there for years where the last time I ate there was when I was in college. I won't say which one that is. All I'll say is that my husband was looking through photos of that place and saw one of a rat in the dining room We just couldn't unsee it even though the photo was taken almost a year ago. I'm so glad I sent a PM to David because he steered us to Hong Kong Eatery. We ate here the first night we were in town after arriving by train an hour and a half earlier. It was a Wednesday night around 6:30 p.m. At that time of day it was a very short wait for a table. The dining room is cramped---it reminded us of eating out in NYC. Here, you are taken to a 4 top and you share your table with 2 other diners. Each table has a pot of tea for every 2 people. It took a while until our server got to us but we didn't mind because it gave us enough time to decide what to order. We each started with a bowl of hot and sour soup. Originally our server only brought us one bowl. We reminded her that we had ordered 2 bowls which she corrected while apologizing to us. For entrees, we ordered beef with snow peas and ma po tofu. The hot and sour soup came to the table piping hot. We thought there was a good amount of stock with the right balance between hot and sour. However, the broth was very thin. Still, the essence of hot and sour soup was there. As for the entrees---The beef with snow peas pleasantly surprised us as the beef was very tender and the snow peas had the perfect texture with just enough crunch to them. The ma po tofu had ground pork in it plus an ingredient we never saw before in this dish---peas. There are many variations of ma po tofu and this one had just the right amount of spice as it didn't over take the other items in the dish. One thing to note---each person gets a set of chopsticks. If you're like me and are all thumbs when it comes to chopsticks, the server will gladly bring you a fork :) All in all, it was a great meal and very reasonably priced. We tipped our server 20%, which surprised her as she thanked us more than once. Would we eat here again? Most definitely. I wish I could give this place zero reviews if I could. Honestly, I do not understand how they are still in service because they were serving cold meats. The only thing that was warm was the rice and that wasn't even hot enough. Their workers were so incredibly rude, saying that they don't own a sauté pan or microwavable container or microwave at all. Everyone around us were also disappointed and I think they bank on people taking the food to go and being able to microwave it at home the crispy skin pork belly has the most amount of fat I've ever experienced and their sausages are light pink, seemingly undercooked, and their duck comes with way too many bones. Our family have been Here for decades and today I am visiting it again. During the pandemic there are no eating in option. Everything is take out only. I got my usual of wonton soup. Delicious with big chunks of shrimps and ground up pork. The won ton had a peppery taste to it and I find it delicious. The broth was equally flavorful and delicious with 2 halves of baby bok choy. The second classic dish is the beef chow fun with Chinese broccoli. Always good even that I haven't eaten it. Classic dish for me always a winner .
