Leaning towards 3.5 stars for Hong Kong Eatery. You definitely can't miss their storefront window, 'adorned' with rows of hanging roasted duck and roasted pork. I've dined here with my family since childhood and though I wouldn't say this place has gone downhill, I don't think my more recent visits are quite up to par with my fond memories here. In particularly for the rice and noodle dishes, the taste and quality of their food is relatively consistent but it seems their portion sizes may have gotten smaller. Or rather, I've been able to find the same dishes at nearby restaurants with more generous portions and lower prices. This was truly a gem that I stumbled upon exploring Chinatown. I can't recommend their noodle soups enough - the broth is so fragrant and flavorful and somehow tastes simultaneously super rich and satisfying, but also light enough that you feel like you can eat bowl after bowl! I love that they let you customize the toppings of your noodle soup (some of my favorites are the wontons which are literally bursting with shrimp and portobello, fish balls, and roast pork - tip enjoy the crispy skin first so it doesn't get too soggy in the soup!) and the prices are so good for the huge bowl of yumminess you get! I can't vouch for anything else on their truly massive menu but would visit this place again in a blink of an eye the next time I'm in Boston! Lucky UberEats find to satisfy my post-dinner cravings! I ordered the duck neck and a 3-meat rice plate with crispy roast pork, chicken, and bbq pork. Shortly after ordering, I received a notice that the bbq pork is sold out, so I chose bbq duck instead. Five minutes later, the restaurant calls to let me know the duck necks are sold out, so I opted for duck wings/feet instead. Not too hard to believe since I ordered an hour before closing, and thankful they were quick to let me know! I'm obsessed with the scallion ginger oil that comes with bbq chicken and asked for extra. The restaurant kindly packed 3 whole containers of it for me! Unfortunately, it was severely lacking in flavor. What should have been an aromatic oily sauce, I only tasted plain oil and an abundance of salt. Nonetheless, I still loved my dinner because all the meats (including the chicken) were wonderfully flavorful on their own! And that duck wing/feet dish made alllll my dreams come true. $5.95 for an entire PLATE?? Unheard of. I was expecting maybe 2-3 of each, but got more like 5-6 of each. One of my favorite places to get my bbq pork and roast pork fix! You get pretty good portions for the price you pay. The cuts of pork have nice layers of fatty and lean parts in each piece. I used to eat here a lot (before covid) and just recently ordered delivery from here. This was my first time with takeout instead of dining in, but the meat to rice ratio was not very good. I ordered two different bbq meats but there was more rice than there was meat :( The sauce that usually comes with it was also very little. The bokchoy was still good though.. We waited a while to get our food and when it is ready we were disappointed in the portion size. We sat indoors so we could eat it immediately but everything was a disappointment. The crispy roasted pork was also cold and the biggest let down. The skin was barely crispy and the meat tasted boiled. We thought it would be great since it was too moist but that meant the skin had no flavor and was not crispy enough. There was no seasoning on it at all and the dip had congealed so it was hard to dip the pork in it. We also ordered fried rice to go with it and the garlic choi sum. Both also were a disaster. The fried rice was more like white rice with cubed veggies mixed in. The garlic choi sum was alright flavor-wise but that also tasted and looked boiled, not stir-fried. The beef chow foon didn't have much flavor other than a smokiness and a hint of ginger. It does have good texture because it was soft and slightly crunchy from the been sprouts. Overall, I wouldn't come here for anything other the crispy pork and roasted duck now. The food is overall lackluster. It's not outstanding but it's not particularly bad. Loved, loved, loved it! I came back twice on a long weekend trip to Boston. While I did not care for the service when I picked up my to go order of house special fried rice and wonton noodle soup around 5 pm on Friday, I returned the next day for lunch because the food is that good. I think because the place serves Cantonese style dishes and its name is Hong Kong Eatery, the main folks who interact with customers speak English and Chinese. When I called to pick up my order, the woman conversed with me in English and told me it would be ready in 10 minutes. On Saturday, I spoke Cantonese with the server. He initially provided us with a kettle of tea and I requested two glasses of water. I noticed many other customers ordering dishes, eating what they could/wanted and asking for the leftovers to be boxed and bagged up. I guess that's why the server wasn't surprised about my party of two ordering a bowl of plain porridge ($2.95), one you tiao (fried dough, $2.95), a plate of shrimp scrambled egg rice ($8.95), a plate of house special fried rice ($8.95), and a bowl of wonton soup ($7.95). These tend to be my general go-tos, especially the fried rice and wontons. Ever since I was a kid, I have loved a good fried rice, and sadly, not many places make it well. I believe if you order and eat in the restaurant, you get more food than if you were to do takeout. My comparison was done on the fried rice. We definitely had a mountain of it at the restaurant and ate a good amount before asking it to be wrapped up. The amount of food in that box was similar to what we received the day before. The wontons and soup are delicious and for plain porridge (congee), I thought it was creamy and flavorful. Mei Sum serves a small cup of congee with duck eggs, scallions, and beef for $2.25 and it would be hard to decide which is better given its size and flavors. You tiao at both, while not a must, is a highly recommend for lapping up the remaining congee in the bowl. I didn't think the shrimp scrambled egg rice was anything special. The rice tasted a little hard and I found the peas under cooked. The eggs were good. I was astonished by its size though. For less than $60 for both trips, we had plenty of delicious, comforting, and familiar dishes. read more

Hong Kong eatery is my second favorite place in Chinatown to consume roast duck. You can easily recognize this little eating spot by the ducks chickens ribs etc. hanging in the window. They also make a good soup they usually have wontons available. When they run out of wontons they always have noodle. Most of the time I just get takeout here they package everything right and give you extra sauces chopsticks napkins whatever you'd like. Prices here are very reasonable nine dollars for a quarter of a toast duck. They have about 20 tables so plenty of room to stay and eat. This is the authentic stuff. We popped in for lunch (because the place next door was cash only. what?) and for our entire meal, we were the only Caucasian faces in the joint. That's okay to say, right? My lunchmate chose the egg drop soup and chicken with cashews. It was a massive portion and it looked great. He enjoyed it thoroughly. I had the beef short ribs with noodles. I was a little concerned because the noodles were crunchy and uncooked. And then as I ate through the tasty ribs (super hot!), the sauce *cooked* the noodles. By far one of the worse place for food and service that I been to. The place is not that busy. We ordered wonton soup, Chinese broccoli, and triple meat combo which came with roasted pork, boneless spare ribs and roasted duck. Food came out to fast. The dishes look pretty, but was cold. The triple meat combo was basically bones and fat. This is basically a slap in the face to me. All the meats look old and tasted bad. The wonton soup was bland and no flavor. The only good dish was the Chinese broccoli. Bill was $36 something. Definitely, will not be back. I suggest you stay away unless you want left over meats that they couldn't sell. read more

Hong Kong Eatery is my favorite restaurant in Chinatown, and arguably my favorite in Boston. The prices are affordable and the food is delicious! My go-to dishes are their signature BBQ choices in noodle soup (wonton and roast duck or roast duck and char siu). You can get the same things over rice as well. Sometimes I venture out of these choices with delicious results. I recommend their Pan-fried noodles. My favorites are the braised beef, and I recently had the seafood pan-fried noodle. The noodles are slightly crispy on the edges and nice and saucy on the inside. The meat is very tender. The seafood is so good with jumbo shrimp, a large scallop, and an assortment of other seafood. Service is very fast once seated. If you come on the weekend for lunch or dinner, there will be a line, though the wait shouldn't be much longer than 15 min. Seats are close together. The only improvement is perhaps to change up their entertainment -- the same rotating music videos, some of which are weird. This is my go to for Chinese BBQ take out. My usual order is a full duck. Their poultry is super plump and juicy. The skin is extra crisp and the fat literally melts in your mouth. My favorite way to prepare their duck is to make homemade wraps and add scallion, Chinese cabbage (sautéed with garlic) and bean paste. I then debone the entire duck and use the bones to make stock for congee or noodles. One duck feeds 4 people, so if you think it's too much..you can either get a 1/2 duck or freeze the meat. I also really like their roasted pork with the crispy skin. I would advise just getting enough for that meal as the skin gets soggy when you reheat it. as for their roasted chicken with scallion sauce... I find the chicken is already pretty salted and flavored so the additional sauce is not needed. if you were to use the sauce... I would say just make your own. The sauce is made haphazardly with the scallions not minced but diced and the ginger fragrance is indiscernible... their beef chow fun is also pretty good! not too oily and has lots of bean sprouts- one portion feeds 2..I would definitely share with someone as this does not reheat well.
