I like Hong Kong Eatery, and its no-nonsense style. Wide selection in menu, with new dishes from time to time on the menu note along the wall (though they're pretty much all written in Chinese; so unless you get someone to translate it for you, you won't know there's something good/new that you can order from). There are the congee/noodle soup/chef out front where you can see them prepare your food right there. There are standard lunch plates of rice/noodles from kitchen at the back. There are also dinner dish that you can order. From time to time, they have seasonal stuffs like bamboo juice for hot summer, or snake soup for winter treat (Chinese love them). Again, check the new menu items on the wall. Service is super efficient. Quality of both food and service are very consistent. Prices are reasonable. But seating is very limited; hence, be prepared to wait, particularly during rush hour. If you want to shorten the wait, tell the waiter you'll share tables. Don't expect this to be a place where you linger with friends and chat. Customers are usually very efficient too - they eat, and they leave. In terms of parking, since it's in the heart of chinatown too, it could be next to impossible to find a metered spot. Best way is, take the T (red line), get off at Downtown Crossing stop, and walk the short distance. We've sampled quite a few Chinese restaurants in the Boston area. I would have to say that this is one of our favorites, and one of the three we frequent on a regular basis. However, I think this restaurant is best for its soups and its congees. We've tried a few other dishes and were disappointed. Decent price, decent food, but poor service. After my family was sat down we spent 20 or so minutes waiting for someone to come take my order. I will also need to add it wasn't packed since there was a couple of empty tables around. When we finally got the waitress' attention she thought we was already waiting for my food... even though we all still had our menus on our table. When we needed a refill of tea we left the lid of the teapot open which indicated we wanted a refill, the waitress took the teapot which we assume she was going to refill it, but it never came back; so after 10 or so minutes we had to ask the waitress about it. The food arrived in a timely manner, but the waitress placed one of our dishes at another customer's table. The customers there was going to correct her, but she bolted off to what I assume was maybe tend to another customer. So after 5 minutes the other people got her attention and she brought the dish back to check the order then to my table, so the food was now slightly cold now, but at least the other customer's had the mind of not touching it. After this we decided that we will not tip based on the poor service from the waitress, as I feel the tip is a reflection on the service we received from the waitress. After we paid our bill and was walking out the waitress confronted us and started telling how she needs the tip etc. until someone just gave her a few bucks. The only reason I am giving it 1 star is because the waitress confronted us, the food itself isn't bad, and came out in an acceptable amount of time, but the waitress should have just let it go after how clearly she fumbled on our table multiple times. read more

I have frequented this old timer in Boston Chinatown for over 40 years since my college days here. It has always been a decent restaurant for me to go to. But ever since the restaurant was bought by these new owners, it has undergone a lot of changes. Some good, for example by rearranging the tables and they are now able to seat more patrons than before and made the seating much more flexible to accommodate parties of different sizes easily. The food has not changed much. The marketing has been upgraded to show a more modern, clean look as well as the decor. However, the huge increases in prices has been disappointing and as expected not much else has changed. It is s shame as the food has varied and lost the consistency as it used to have been. I have found that at times the food is still decent, but there has also been times when the food has been simply awful in taste and texture. read more

It was only $5.00! I have to say that you must be careful of the floor after entering the front door, the floor is very slippery. I saw them carry out the roast ducks and pork from the kitchen which is in the rear to the front of the store where they prepare some noodle dishes. The waiter who showed us to our table can be more polite. When he gave me my noodle soup, he sort of pushed the dish along the table which caused a bit of the broth to spill onto the small dish they had underneath the bowl. If and ever I get ask: "the best thing you ever eaten?" I would pick the version of Braised Beef Stew served over rice here at the Hong Kong Eatery. Done the traditional way, tender and flavorful. Tendons melt in your mouth. What more can you ask for ? It is always a push, the equally delicious cantonese wonton noodles offer a tough decision on what to order. Some days I even go for the double or triple BBQ rice plates. Choice of 2 or 3 chinese BBQ items over rice. I usually go for sliced chicken with ginger and scalion, and roast pork (crisy skin). Some folks order the equally delight BBQ pork and maybe roast duck. We have since moved to a small town in the south where every Chinese restaurant are set up for buffet and General Tso chicken (bitter laugh). I have such a love hate relationship with this place. They have good food, especially the BBQ meats you see hanging in front of their window. But at the same time, they are excruciatingly slow and inefficient at what they do. You can show up with NO line and still wait 20 minutes at the cash register waiting for someone to take your order (usually there will be a line cause well, they are slow af). It just feels awfully managed, like as if the owner has no clue how to make money. This this one of those authentic Chinese places where food actually taste like they do in China, and you don't go there to order a general tsao's chicken. This place is great! They serve authentic Chinese food that is super cheap and is served really fast. I like the rice and noodle dishes. I usually get the scallion pancakes and raviolis for apps, both are really good. Depends on what you like... I received good service, and appreciate the authenticity. The storefront certainly adds something to flavor of Chinatown: classic ducks in the window and fish tanks at the door. Pictures of historic Hong Kong are on the humble walls. Cultural aspect aside, I have to say that I prefer the food at PF Changs, Emperor Garden (Chinatown), Dragon Garden (Davis Square), Food Wall (JP, 387 Centre Street), Master Wok (South Station, Cambridgeside Galleria), and Panda Express (Copley Mall). I have eaten at the The Hong Kong eatery in Boston's China Town for years. The reason is because the food is delicious! Absolutely delicious. This place made myself and my two friends all feel terrible. The roasted duck I had was mostly bones, and the "beef" my friend had was soft and fatty. I'm not going to lie. The only reason why I came here is because my friend wanted to come. From the outside, this place does not make the food look appetizing. I could see mold near the window. When we went inside, my friend and I were seated immediately. My friend ordered a ox/wonton soup. The food came in around 5 minutes. My friend kept drinking water and he said the food here contained either too much salt or msg that made him dehydrate. RATS!!!! We ate here last night, and as hard as this is to believe...an entire clan of rats proceeded to come out of hiding spaces in the visible-to-the public kitchen! I have never experienced anything like this in the U. S. or abroad! Craving an Asian Noodle House, we ventured to the Hong Kong Eatery after reading fairly strong reviews on Yelp. We got there as they were about to close, 10ish p.m..My husband got a bad feeling when we entered, but I insisted we stay. We ordered quite a bit of food, which actually all tasted pretty good....but when the movie Ratatouille came to life with a family of large rodents crawling through the kitchen, I became physically ill. We had a view of the kitchen through a window adjacent to our table. As soon as the staff all left the kitchen to begin closing down the restaurant, the rat clan came out of their hiding holes, including jumping out of the stove, and I mean BIG rats...like a woman's size 7 shoe! We saw at least four or five rats, but no doubt there were more. The oddest thing is it was OBVIOUS the staff must've known these rats were there, but no one reacted at all! Of course we called the board of health this morning. Too bad...we believe in supporting small family businesses, but they need to get rid of their rodent family., read more

The staff can explain anything on the menu or listed on wall, and they remember your choices for whenever you come again. I ordered 2 roast duck with shrimp wontons noodle soup which was $16.05. Then when I got my order I found out they had forgotten the roast duck so it was just noodle and wontons. Okay food but this place is nasty beyond belief. Floor is oily enough to make an AWD slip and tables are sticky enough to catch flies. Last time I went there I got some seafood combo plate... which had a couple of ingredients gone bad. I talked to the waitor who apparently didnt speak english or mandarin and they got me a new pair of chopstix... what is that gonna do for me when food is bad?!... but anyway.... they finally understood what I meant and got me a new dish... after 30 minutes!!!... after reading quite a few shining reviews on yelp, i grabbed a lunch companion and made my way to the hong kong eatery, specifically in search of a bowl of perfect wonton mein. this tiny restaurant, which looks more like a takeout place from the outside due to the various roasted offerings in the front window, and long lines which seem to snake to the entrance at lunch time, has only a few tables, and an intoxicating aroma escapes to the immediate vicinity outside of the shop. after being seated, we quickly ordered up the noodle soup with wontons and roast duck, sweet and sour soup, and sliced beef with oyster sauce. the wonton mein was perfect. four little shrimp wontons floated in a delicious chicken based broth, along with slices of roast duck meat that are to die for (watch out for bones though!). the noodles were excellent and it was a generous portion overall. the sweet and sour soup is among the best i've ever had, and a they do give you smaller bowls to share what can only be called a very large "small" order of this item. the beef with oyster sauce was also delicious. like other restaurants in chinatown, the hong kong eatery does little damage on your wallet, and is a nice treat when you really need something filling and find yourself amongst a boisterous chinatown lunch crowd. i hope to come back and try some of their more adventurous items, including the duck webs and the jellyfish appetizer. always nice to see these things on the menu. read more
