After a labor intensive Friday helping my daughter move from her home rental to her apartment, I needed some sustenance to ensure I refueled because we still had Saturday to finish moving her out. I was craving fast food Chinese, but I didn't want the restaurant fast food chain Panda Express because they're stingy with their serving sizes. I looked up fast food Chinese near where my hotel was located and found Hong Kong Express. These mom and pop Chinese food spots are always generous with their portions and Hong Kong Express was no exception. Not sure if it was because I didn't eat what I ordered at the restaurant and ate it at my hotel, but the food wasn't as fresh as I would have liked. It still hit the spot and filled me up, but I give this Hong Kong Express 3.5 stars based on their generosity with their food and the professional demeanor of the lady who served me. There are multiple Hong Kong Express locations in Los Angeles, but the one I stopped by at is located in Duarte. It can be found in the busy Target shopping center. The restaurant is located across from Sonic and Denny's, it's a few steps away from an Italian restaurant, and it's next to Koki + Ku and Crumbl. There is plenty of parking at this shopping center. Hong Kong Express is similar to Panda Express where you can order by selecting items from several choices of Chinese food and then pay at the register. As you enter the restaurant, it is well lit, clean, and there is plenty of seating. There isn't much ambience and the decor is limited to a few Chinese hanging decorations and stringed lights. There are some machines where you can get cheap toys after feeding the machine some coins. The Asian lady I interacted with was professional and took care of my order expediently. I'll always choose to stop by a mom and pop Chinese fast food restaurant over Panda Express if I can find one primarily because of their portion sizes and value for your money. Hong Kong Express checked both those boxes like a champ. I ordered their two item Combo B, which comes with your choice of two Chinese food items with fried rice and chow mein. For my food choices, I selected their orange chicken and kung pao chicken. I also ordered two fried egg rolls. I happily watched them heap on generous amounts of food into my styro container. After my exhausting day helping my daughter, I was looking forward to stuffing my face with Hong Kong Express' food. When I ate my meal at our hotel, I cleaned off my container because the food was good and I was very hungry. The food wasn't as fresh as I would have liked. The egg rolls tasted like they had been on the serving line too long. I wished the orange chicken was more tender, but I enjoyed the kung pao chicken. Make sure to ask for their hot sauce if you like spicy because I made sure to dip my food into their hot sauce to make it more flavorful. I thought their fried rice and chow mein were tasty and complemented the two dishes I ordered. My daughter and I had a productive Day 1 moving her from her home rental to her apartment. Eating a stuffed styro of Chinese food from Hong Kong Express energized me for our Day 2. read more

Food was ok, but short of a 5 star review due to posted credit card $0.50 surcharge only visible right when you're about to pay. I get it, it's "only" fifty cents. But it's the cost of doing business and so it's tacky. People paying by cards means less runs to deposit cash at banks, etc -- simplifying your business. Was in the area and had never tried this place before, staff and service wasn't bad. Ordered 1/2 chow mein and 1/2 veggies with jalapeno chicken and kung pao chicken. Jalapeno had a decent crisp to the chicken and wasn't overly spicy, the kung pao wasn't that great and overall plate was ok. I always try to support affordable Chinese fast food spots, and this one really impressed me. It's by far one of the cleanest I've seen in LA. I love that they cook smaller batches and only fill half the trays at a time. It keeps everything looking fresh and hot. So far, I've enjoyed the spicy chicken, beef and broccoli, shrimp with vegetables, and Kung Pao chicken. Every dish was flavorful and freshly made. So after my search on Yelp, I found this small gem in this plaza in Duarte. There's a lot of tables inside, so anyone can have their boxed meal here. The tables are also pretty clean. The table I sat at had a grain or two of rice, but it's wasn't at all a big deal. The food here is pretty standard stuff with a few entree options, like Chicken with Green Beans, Orange Chicken, Kung Pao Chicken, and I think I saw Teriyaki Chicken as well. I went for their 1-item plate and they did a decent packing on my tray. It almost looked like a 2-item plate! The 1-item was like $9.47 with cash. They accept cards here, though I'm not sure if there's any minimum purchase or anything. But cash is always good for places like this, helps the small businesses. So I tried the Kung Pao Chicken with half Fried Rice and Chow Mein. It was pretty good, though the Kung Pao wasn't anything like the Panda kind - the chicken was deep-fried and slathered with some spicy sauce. It was still decent though. We love this place! Will add photos next time but wanted to share with everyone what a hidden gem this place is. My husband loves this place coz the food is good, they give generous portions, and the price is very reasonable. Their plates come with your choice of carb - either white rice, chow mein, rice noodle, fried rice, or veggies. I must say that their chow mein is one of my faves compared to other Chinese fast food out there. They have a good variety of entrees and we like to get the orange chicken, mushroom chicken, and eggplant. The honey walnut shrimp is a little doughy - got it for the first time and may not get it again. Egg rolls and cream cheese wontons are good and great to get as appetizers. Went to carmax to get a quote, had an hour to kill, so I walked around the target plaza nextdoor. Came across this little gem and decided to take a look, not because I was hungry, I was just curious. The inside looks clean and the food looked fresh. It's one of the very few that had shrimp as an option. Although they charge an extra 75 cents for the shrimp. The food wasn't very greasy or salty. Remember the 5 star rating is only for Chinese fastfood, so don't expect restaurant quality. I thought I was crazy until i read the reviews. Trying this place for the first time, i walked in as someone else was finishing their transaction. The two guys behind the counter looked at me like i was an alien. I'm a Latina and just as i was ordering a white guy walked in and the two guys turned to help him. I barely got my order out when the guy walked in. He kind of yelled at them that i was first. The register guy finished up my order which was broccoli beef mostly broccoli with a few pieces of beef.
