So this is a small Chinese restaurant that's a bit aways from the main hustle and bustle lf the 626. However, if you want to try something a little different, there are some "traditional" Kaiping specialties that I haven't seen on menus anywhere else. I've always come with my family and have received great service because my dad knows the staff. They speak my home dialect so I'm sure there's some bias there. Foodwise, I've tried quite a bit and haven't had any dishes that didn't hit the mark for me. Standouts for me are the big claypot yellow eel rice, their specialty roast goose (the 2 dishes just listed may require a preorder but again, my dad usually handles all the ordering), their beansprout with pig intestine, and their egg plant with salted fish. The claypot rice is ordered by the kilo so really is a big party dish but has nice succulent pieces of eel, really well cooked rice, and then of course the crispy rice at the bottom. The goose is very flavorful and not super gamey, it has more of a meaty texture and bite than the younger poultry an American pallette may be used to so word of warning. I really like the beansprout with pig intestine, again not really gamey but very savory with very tender, fatty pieces of intestine (highly recommend even if you're hesitant with intestine). The eggplant with salted fish is also intensely savory with a pungency from the salted fish that may seem like a lot but melds really well with the sauce and overall flavor of the dish. Was here a few weeks ago with my kids for a quick lunch. We got the Beef Chow Fun...it's a thick flat white noodles sautéed with green onions, bean sprouts, beef and sort of a soy sauce. It's one of our go to orders when we hit a Chinese restaurant. Sometimes it's a hit or miss...but I got to say it was a HIT! The noodles were separated and seasoned perfectly, coating each strand of noodles with their soy sauce mixture...and the beef was perfectly tenderized..NOT TOUGH AT ALL! Usually beef is tough in this type of noodle dish at other places. The flavors were legit..not too sweet or salty just right! It's really hard for me to find good Asian food in Baldwin Park so I was pleasantly surprised when we stumbled upon this place. Highly recommend. Our server was a Chinese lady..probably didn't speak much of English and didn't come across as friendly but to be honest that's how you know the food is going to slap when you have a waitress with the meanest RBF...so don't be alarmed just know food is going to smack! Honestly when you're craving Authentic Chinese food in the Baldwin Park area this is the spot! I love their House Special noodles with shrimp, beef, the works... it's filling thick noodles reminds me of Mongolian style noodles but enough to feed about 3-4 people in your family if you share. When walk in, there is enough tables on the side to sit down but the service is always warm and nice. I also like to order the house special (soup) style dumplings that are pork filled even though I generally don't eat pork, these dumplings are ground pork and delish and what you would want in a juicy dumpling. The dumpling soup 7/10 I'm not much of a Szechuan flavor girl. I do like it but I don't like it being drenched in it so much. Basically, watch out for the numbness and spiciness in this dish, although the lady taking my order did try to forewarn me by asking for my spice levels before hand. This has a health score of C .. hmmmm read all the violations before but hoping they were all corrected and didn't have an updated Letter Grade ! Well it was still worth the try and it didn't disappoint!! Restaurant has at the center a nice elegant dining area with 3 of 8 seats round tables covered with nice blue and white printed cloth and lazy Susan atop!!! Red Leather covered booths set up against wall for more privacy! Ordered their weekday Lunch Special which was an ala carte dish list @$12.99. Hubby and I shared a plate of Sauteed Bittermelon with Beef and Chicken & String beans with Black bean sauce served with rice!! Good service, warm reception. Ambience quiet, casual and comfortable. Ordered green beans with chicken and bitter melon with black bean sauce. Perfect match with steam rice included with lunch weekday special. Rich flavorful sauce on both veggies but a little different in taste. Salted black bean and right cooking time made bitter melon taste more prominent (my preference) in which steamed white rice's role did its job as a neutralizer. Nice crunchy green beans with soft and tender chicken pieces was as good and as enjoyable. Very reasonable price for what you get. Will definitely come back an d try lobster dish and others on the menu list. Disappointed though on the C rating we saw as we walked out the door. Never in my life of living in the San Gabriel Valley would I have imagined finding a Chinese restaurant with unique Taishan flavors tucked away in Baldwin Park. It is located in a small plaza surrounded by other businesses, sitting right in the corner as you enter. Walking inside, the interior is reminiscent of classic Hong Kong style cafes, featuring various booths and large dining tables with tablecloths. You are greeted immediately by a BBQ station on the right, though it was not fully stocked with ducks or other roasted meats. Throughout the dining room, there are plenty of photos of the different dishes they offer. We had a party of eight to celebrate a birthday, and the staff was kind enough to hold our cake in the back for us. We ordered the following: Specialty Fried Fish: This was the absolute highlight of the evening. The fish was incredibly fresh, nicely fried, and contained roe inside. It was served on top of a soy and oil mix. The freshness of the fish really stood out. Golden Eel Clay Pot Rice (Large): The rice preparation was very unique. The pot was packed with plenty of eel, and the rice was already mixed for you when it arrived. The flavor was light and not heavy on soy sauce, with lots of fresh cilantro and onion mixed in. There were also plenty of crunchy rice bits on the side. A very solid dish. Tiger Prawns with Vermicelli: This was a bit on the salty side, but the prawns themselves were delicious and had a great light braised flavor. Ong Choy with Tofu Sauce: A great dish featuring crunchy greens stir fried in a light tofu sauce. Our entire party finished this plate. Stir Fried Green Beans: Another major highlight of the night. The green beans were perfectly blistered and coated in what tasted like an XO style sauce. It had a really unique and lightly spicy flavor. Honey Walnut Shrimp: Probably the lowest point of the meal. The shrimp are uniquely fried and layered on top of wonton strips, which I have never seen before. However, the walnuts tasted a bit old, making the dish just okay overall. Peking Pork Chop: These featured a nice sweet and tangy Peking sauce over the pork chops. The cuts of meat used were less fatty, which I really appreciated. Filet Mignon French Style: This dish was good, but my only complaint is that there was a lot of excess oil pooled at the bottom of the plate. Otherwise, it still tasted fine. Overall, this restaurant did it right. The food tasted noticeably lighter than many other Chinese restaurants I have been to. This was our first time here, except for two people in our group, so we were all very curious about how things would turn out. This is a small hole in the wall restaurant that a friend recommended that I try. I wanted some duck and he said this place has the best tasting one, so i had to give it a try. Parking is very simple, they share a private lot with other establishments around. I did not use the bathroom so I'm uncertain what it looks like. The environment is extremely casual and the service was great! I'm not sure if it's because I spoke to them in Cantonese, but i was treated with a smile and was given great customer service. As soon as I walked in, I noticed there was half a duck left. I asked if they had any others in the back, they said no. I said to them that I'd like to order that last duck as I was waiting for my friend to show up. They gladly told me that they will hold that duck as I took a look at the menu. I ordered for us: Salt and pepper prawns: 8/10 the size of the prawns were huge and was very meaty. There was flavor but I wish there was a little bit more. Yang chow fried rice: 9/10 the rice was extremely fluffy and I loved the meat variations. I just forgot to ask without onion/chives. Bbq pork: 8/10 It was great, but I wished it was a little bit sweeter, just a little. Roast duck: 10/10 for only being half a duck, the duck was smooth, the skin wasn't too roasted but it was the right consistency of crispy and chewy. They didn't drench it with sauce, which is great! Decided to try this off a Yelp search find by the missus. I knew it was no way related to the now somewhat well known Mama Lu's group of restaurants and was just trying to sort of leech off the name, but the Yelp reviews and pictures looked good. Well, located in a small nondescript strip mall, this is a tiny local joint with authentic Chinese in an area of town you probably don't go to for Chinese food in the SGV. Every other business in the mall was specifically tailored for Latinos and you don't see a lot of Chinese businesses or customers. Still, the workers are very friendly and attentive. The place is clean if nothing special inside. The problem is the food was just okay. Maybe for the area, due to a dearth of Chinese restaurants, this stands out. However, I live in Temple City and we have many, many choices all around us. When we go anywhere the first time, we order a small handful of dishes and don't go crazy just in case it's bad. This place wasn't bad. It is just none of the dishes particularly stood out. I always order kung pao chicken, and here it was incredibly bland. I love how at 99.9% of Chinese restaurants they always warn us that kung pao is spicy and it is never any spicier than mayonnaise unless you are at an authentic Szechuan restaurant and beg them to make it really spicy. The other two dishes were more successful. The most successful was probably the Salt and Pepper Fish Filet. It was good and flavorful. The chicken with black bean sauce was also pretty decent, especially since it is filled with string beans, which I usually order separately anyway. Portions were not small nor overly large, but also fairly priced. Bottom line is you can see people who are locals seem to like it more than I do. I probably wouldn't go back. I certainly wouldn't rush back since it is farther away than most of the other Chinese restaurants I can try or which I already frequent. But, you certainly can do worse. It wasn't bad in any way. So make your decision to try or not with these things in mind. read more

WOW orange chicken was tough chicken wings raw (called i was offered a replacement) sweet and sour pork chop was raw (was told it was like that and its how its marinated) greens were mush especially green beans (you can tell by the photo.) chow fun was ok and roast pork and duck. the pan fried noodle sauce is a soup (not sure if they cook it that way) may i remind you, that this was quick. do people drive back and return food? Papa Lu has the same flavor as a restaurant in China. My dad was a farmer in the rice paddies of China. He did not know anything about cooking until he came to the USA. Most cooks in the Asian restaurants have no knowledge of cooking while they were in China. Papa Lu is different. Mr. Lu was a chef while he was in China. After immigrating to the United States, he continued cooking until he has now opened his own restaurant. He works in the back with his son, and his wife works with a relative in the front--a true family restaurant. Mr Lu's professional wok fried rice and fried vegetables have "wak hey". That is the marker of a professional Chinese style sent, and that is what you get at Papa Lu. I took the family out to lunch and we all loved it. My dad and mom likes Mr. Lu's cooking. They really enjoy the professional style cooking. Mrs, Lu was especially sweet to our son. read more

Decided to go eat with my dad after working and found this place near by and decided to check it out. Food was ok, not good or bad. for Baldwin Park it was pretty decent but wasn't the best. The wontons didn't have much flavor but the chili oil that went with it was pretty good. I enjoyed the noodles but my dad said that they also lacked flavor.
