Cathay Garden is a true Rhode Island staple. Having been in business for several decades, they have mastered the art of consistency--the food is excellent every single time we visit. It is rare to find a place that maintains such high quality for so long, but they truly deliver. The crab rangoons were so delicious to start! I'm normally not a huge fan of lo mein but my family wanted it. I was surprised how tasty it was. The General Choi's chicken and fried rice were both phenomenal! They built a new bar which is a great addition. We had the scorpion bowl for two which was delicious and packed a punch! The service is always professional and attentive, but our most recent visit was particularly special. The owner's wife stopped by our table to chat with us for a while; she was incredibly kind and made us feel like more than just customers. It's that level of genuine hospitality that keeps us coming back. If you are looking for great food and a welcoming atmosphere, I cannot recommend this place enough! read more

Clean, neat restaurant made dining very comfortable. Our waiter was very pleasant as well as helpful in describing meals to us. The General Choi's Chicken was delightful for my partner but one has to love spicy food and he does! However, he was not thrilled with the white rice because he felt it was very dry. My combination plate consisted of an egg roll, fried rice, and Chicken Lo Mein. The egg roll was not my style but the fried rice was mouth-watering!. I also enjoyed the Lo Mein noodles, yet, I would eliminate the chicken in the future as it seemed a bit chewy. We are big fans of Cathay Garden! 1. They have a large parking lot which makes picking up takeout on Main Street way less annoying. 2. Nice interior if you prefer to dine in. 3. They have Peking duck (my husband's all time favorite food). We've done takeout and dined in and both times have been great. We got the pu-pu platter for two and it was enough for six, so would definitely order the smaller one next time. The Peking duck is super tasty as well. First of all ... never, ever order from here on New Year's Eve!! I had an order for a party, which I phoned in early afternoon for a 6 p.m. pickup and they made me wait 1.5 hours in their crowded, freezing cold entryway for it. No exaggeration ... it was supposed to ready at 6 p.m. and it came out at 8:30 p.m. Worse yet, they refused to give any updates ... so every 30 minutes they would only say 'not yet' in a condesending tone. Many others were waiting as well ... some outside in the cold. For 1 - 1 1/2 hours. Again ... no updates. People came in off the street and were either told to wait ... or, got their food quickly. It seemed that there was no system in terms of whose orders would come out. Finally, after 1.5 hours, the order was called out. I snaked my way through all the other pissed off customers to pick up the order and the price was way higher than the online menu. I asked if there were condiments and told yes. We had an order for 8 people ... they put in ONE packet of soy sauce and one small cup of hot mustard. Cheap!! The food was dry and bland ... made even worse because of the lack of condiments. It was embarassingly tasteless, so we pulled whatever we had out of cabinets. Tabasco sauce, horse radish, buffalo chicken dressing. If you are going to serve dried out food with little taste ... at least provide sauce to cover it up! The pu pu platter was all thrown into a big box. - Crab Rangoon ... 2/5. No cream cheese taste. Very little crab pieces, if any. Tasted more like a bland fried wonton. - Terryaki Beef sticks ... 1/5. Super thin. Way too sweet. No beef taste. Almost seemed slimey in texture, like they were boiled, not BBQ. Ditto the chicken terryaki. Dry and way too sweet. - Chicken fingers ... 3/5. Dry and bland. Way more crunchy coating than chicken. - Boneless spare ribs ... Dry and flavourless. No real pork taste and the only note was sweet. - Fried shrimp ... 4/5. Very dry and too crunchy. Shrimp inside was rubbery but it was the only thing we got which actually had a taste and wasn't bland. - Egg Roll ... 3/5. All shredded cabbage. Tasted like something you'd biy and reheat at the supermarket. Bland and needed sauce. - Chicken Wings ... 1/5. So bad we threw them away. Overall, this is below mediocre American Chinese food. No reason to return to this place. The inside was cute in a retro 1980's way but the staff was pretty rude and the food was bland. 3 stars is being very generous. read more

With the plethora of options on Main Street I'm glad to know there's a go to Chinese Spot! Staff were friendly, restaurant was clean. Great variety of offerings and lunch specials. My best friend and I went for lunch each got the lunch special a soup and one of their combos. Both soups were good size and flavor. The chicken had some kick, some places advertise some spice but there's nothing there but this had a little bit and was glad to see it. Pork fried rice was good as well. If you're in the neighborhood I would definitely check them out! I think for both plates and 2 drinks I spent no more than 25 bucks and had leftovers as well. read more

We came here as a casual Valentines Day dinner. We ordered the crab Rangoon and jumbo fried shrimp to start and quickly realized that our eyes were bigger than our stomachs. We have been going to Cathay Garden since we moved to Rhode Island 40 years ago. There have been some changes over that time, which would only be expected. These include a total remodeling and change of ownership, but the food has always been delicious and fairly priced. Today my husband and I were there for a late lunch. The traditional buffet that originally brought us to this restaurant that first time, is long gone a casualty of the pandemic. My husband and I both had lunch specials that included Szechuan Beef with fried rice and Spring roll and Beef with Peeking Sauce and fried rice. Both dishes were absolutely delicious. Fresh vegetables, well seasoned and an incredible value for such labor intensive beef items. Have you seen the price of beef these days? The young owner was our waiter for this off time visit. He was attentive, friendly and knowledgeable. Cathay Garden is, in my understanding, the longest continuously running restaurant in East Greenwich. It's easy to overlook it but if you have never been or not in while, try it. Their food is fairly priced and deliciously authentic. The boneless spare ribs and wonton soup are our absolute favorites compared to easily 20 other Chinese restaurants we have tried in the area! read more

At 19 - I was in a motorcycle accident where my life flashed before my eyes. I could feel my soul levitate out of my body and begin rising to the heavens above. It's been 20 years since then and I've been chasing that feeling ever since. The closest thing I've ever found to heaven is right here at Cathay Garden. Sitting in a dark, five seat bar on mainstreet.. smashing lo mein with my buddies is about as close to the pearly gates you can get. The bar keep Joe is a humble man of few words - but don't get it twisted.. he has more mojo than most. The man has 151 running through his veins and can make a woman aroused with just one look. Always smiling and eager to give you a heavy pour into one of the funny parrot glasses they have adorning the bar. What a great Chinese restaurant. I'm not from the area and ended up going here because it was one of the few that was open on Mondays. I'm glad it was because the food was delicious. The wonton soup had huge chunks of roast pork in it and vegetables, and the dumplings were the way I like them, nice and doughy and huge. The dipping sauce was really good as well. The main meal was some spicy beef and vegetables and a combination platter that was also just delicious. They have so many good things: chicken wings, spare ribs, pork fried rice, General Chien's chicken, great traditional egg rolls, and SO MUCH MORE. This place is really hit or miss. One consistent miss is take-out. They don't seem to care if they get it right or not. I've ordered take-out about 6 times and these are some misses: They use the wrong noodles - fried chow mein - with the hot and sour soup. Fried chow mein noodles get bitter when in this soup. They should know better. They overcharge, by a lot. I ordered steamed dumplings to go, which were 6.50 on the menu. I was charged $9.00 for dumplings that were small and mediocre. I was reminded by the young woman, quite rudely by the way, that prices can change without notice. $2.50 more, on an app? Wow. Way to take your customers for granted. One more time the beef with broccoli should have been accurately described as giant lobes of broccoli for you to cut up yourself, with a hint of beef. So many great things about Cathay Garden. There is weeks we eat here two to three times. Most of the times it's takeout. House duck sauce, and house hot mustard in the bag every time. Cathay uses premium ingredients, always fresh. Consistency yet again puts Cathay Garden in the top 5, it's a mortal lock every time. We both decided on buffet, more than enough choices, very hot and very fresh. Let's start out by stating that Chinese food is regional. not by China region, but by where it is served in America. There is no other food like that served by Chinese restaurants in the Rhode Island area. Since relocating to Florida, we have missed that special touch that comes with local Chinese dishes. Cathay Garden is a shinning example of what Rhode Islanders crave. Egg rolls to die for, crisp outside with plenty of taste after the first bite. Ribs with succulent meat as well as Teriyaki beef that was fried crisp outside without rendering them tough or stringy. We ordered a family assortment that made everyone happy and none of us left hungry; (not even a hour later) Sincere thanks to the lovely young lady that waited on us. Trying to set her up with our grandson embarrassed her (and him) but she was full of good humor and extremely pleasant and efficient. Really good American Chinese food. Super friendly and nice waitress. Quick serving. Old style interior perseveres a piece of history. You won't see this style in Chinatown or even in China anymore. Introduced to this place by my girlfriend. I keep considering ordering from their menu, but the buffet in the back just feels like too good of an option to not have. Food's always fresh, they change out the food rather frequently. Their dumplings are addicting. The atmosphere is nothing to write home about; old carpet and wall art, clearly hasn't been renovated.
