    Blackened chicken

Time to spill the beans on a local gem. I am an out of towner that has been coming to Victoria about once a year. I have tried many different Chinese restaurants on the island, yet I come back here every time I'm in town for its delicious and oddly addictive mouth numbing spicy plates. Be prepared for an onslaught of spicy bold flavors, but you can always wash it down with an ice cold beer or a ice cold herbal tea. Don't come here to be wowed by the ambience or its service, but do show up for its authentic Szechuan/Sichuan style cuisine. Do get their blackened bone-in chicken, stir fried green beans, eggplant in a brown sauce and sliced beef trip in aromatic chili oil. Other notables is the fish boil swimming in a chili oil bath and the shredded potato with jalapenos. My first visit to the island was in 2008 and Hong Kong West has been operating since then or even longer for all I know. Safe to say they know what they are doing and they won't be going anywhere anytime soon.

best Chinese food in Victoria, really recommended! The black chicken is sweet and spicy! Taste really good!!! And the green bean is also a must have dish! The potato dish is really interesting! I like the sour and spicy potatoes!

Family lives in Victoria but I'm based out in Toronto. To be perfectly honest, compared to Downtown Toronto, this location would not be the gem of the city. That said, apples to apples, there are very limited solid Asian options in Victoria. That taken into consideration, this restaurant is a staple go to in the city. Decor is run down, front signage not luxuriously, it's a hole in a wall with tasty authentic Chinese food if you're into food and not particular about the renovation or atmosphere. Free parking in the back. Service is warm and homey, but don't expect western restaurant practice where they check on your table every so often if you're well attended. You need something, you flag someone down. Food is on they heavy, flavorful, savory, and spicy side. Bring a group as portions are quite ample and variety is key to family Asian sit down restaurants. Three star using Toronto standards but a four in Victoria BC if you're craving that Asian cuisine. Dine away!

FOOD Stir-Fried Dried Green Beans ($19.95) The winner is this category would be Tropical Island Restaurant on Shelbourne; however, The Cozy Place offering would be close behind it. Decent with some crunch still; you can get it spicy or not. Ma Po Tofu ($19.95) You can order it meatless or minced pork; it's somewhat authentic. It does have some heat to it (for those sensitive to spice); however, it's pretty solid! === 3. SERVICE Service was good and professional on call-in, payment, wait, questions around the menu, and when the order was ready. English was fluently spoken by the lady working the front and the man cooking the dishes behind her. === 4. ENVIRONMENT It's a long, narrow restaurant - your group of 6, maybe 8 could fit at one table in the front. For everyone else, you're accommodated in tables of 2's or 4's along the wall. If bringing a wheelchair or baby stroller, I would stick to the table in the front. Parking is all metered on the street - note that the city has their parking enforcement office basically across the way working until 8pm, so put payment into the meters upfront even if you're coming by to do a quick pickup!

Golden City is a real good place to dine: - Hot & Sour soup: This place has about the absolute best hot & sour we've ever had anywhere. - bbq pork: a traditionally prepared dish that was very good. - Fried dumplings: Not the greatest dumpling I've ever had...but good enough. They had a real good dipping sauce to accompany. - duck: This duck dish was real good. We certainly we like this place. Oh...and it's open later than most any restaurants around in the area!

I think it would probably be busier at lunch since they do have a dim sum menu. We ordered off the dim sum menu because I was hungry for it and they still offered it. From the regular menu I just got stir fry pea vines. The pea vines were crunchy and garlicky. They were to my liking. On the dim sum menu we got tripe, Xiao long Bao, omasum, har gow, chicken feet, and ham sui gok. My favorites on the dim sum menu were the tripe, Xiao long Bao, and chicken feet. The omasum was a bit too chewy and needed to be cooked long because I also had a hard time eating it. Everything else filled me up quickly and they were a great late night eat! Overall, Golden City is a standard place for Chinese food. The employees were nice but it's easier to talk to them if you have another mandarin speaker with you. My partner speaks mandarin so he helped me order.

FOOD We've tried a variety of things and overall it's been solid: - Chicken Corn Soup ($12.95): solid choice - Mushroom, Peas, Egg Drop Soup: ($11.95): even better! - Dumplings (10, $12.95): nice and meaty. - BBQ Pork Chow Fun: good pork, wish there was more pork; noodles OK. - Beef & Broccoli ($18.95): feels pricey but it's solid. - Assorted Meat Chow Fun ($17.95): best value if you're doing noodles! - Prawns & Snow Peas ($19.95): good option as an entree! - House Special Chop Suey ($15.95): I guess it's supposed to be veg with some meat? === 3. SERVICE We've never dined in; only gotten takeout - but the service has always been good. Like other Chinese restaurants in Victoria, the time indicated for our order to ready seems to be a lot longer than say Vancouver, Toronto, or even Honolulu. But everyone answering the phone and serving at the counter speaks English well and it seems like they can speak Mandarin also. === 4. ENVIRONMENT It's spartan in a good way - big, open, and clean without the gaudy overly-Chinese decor that often accompanies the Chinese restaurant stereotype. A large fish tank at the front (likely for Feng Sui purposes) offers some distraction for younger kids. Those with wheelchairs and baby strollers should have not challenges here. The complex they are in seems to have plenty of parking - we've never seen the lot full, so that helps if you're driving!

Don't come here unless you have low expectations and have no idea what great or even good Chinese food tastes like... and we ordered at least 20 different plates as a group that's how I know most of the food was trash. The only decent plate was the Lemon Chicken.
