Time to spill the beans on a local gem. I am an out of towner that has been coming to Victoria about once a year. I have tried many different Chinese restaurants on the island, yet I come back here every time I'm in town for its delicious and oddly addictive mouth numbing spicy plates. Be prepared for an onslaught of spicy bold flavors, but you can always wash it down with an ice cold beer or a ice cold herbal tea. Don't come here to be wowed by the ambience or its service, but do show up for its authentic Szechuan/Sichuan style cuisine. Do get their blackened bone-in chicken, stir fried green beans, eggplant in a brown sauce and sliced beef trip in aromatic chili oil. Other notables is the fish boil swimming in a chili oil bath and the shredded potato with jalapenos. My first visit to the island was in 2008 and Hong Kong West has been operating since then or even longer for all I know. Safe to say they know what they are doing and they won't be going anywhere anytime soon. read more

Go here to order the authentic stuff, trust me, it'll open your heart to real chinese cooking. Went here with my girlfriend and dad a few days ago. Ordered spicy cabbage, sichuan ginger beef and 4 or 5 other things that the waitress recommended, so a pretty large order. Everything came at a reasonable time and it was all incredibly delicious! Nothing was greasy, and there were lots of fresh vegetables and delicious meat. I've been to probably 20+ different chinese places in Vic and this one is by far the best. It may take a little bit longer as it's ran by just the husband and wife, but it is totally worth it. I think this is probably the most authentic, fresh tasting Chinese place I've been to as well, you just have to reassure them that you can handle spicy and make sure to say Xie xie ni! read more

I think it really depends what you order, some items were great and some felt like a rip off like plain rice with a few pieces of meat and veg for $14. Make sure you have the updated menu as the one we found online was outdated and prices had gone up. The green beans were great. Would order the vegetable and meat dishes and make the rice at home if we order from here again, and avoid the rice based ones. The kids like the chow mein. read more

This is probably the best Chinese restaurant in Victoria. As many people said, I didn't order from English menu and asked for recommendations. The lady (I assume the owner?) was very helpful and friendly. 4 of us ordered 4 dishes but 3 dishes were probably enough. We ordered green bean, eggplant and fish hotpot and beef (it was called beef kimchi but more likely fried beef with vegetable). We ordered everything at medium spicy and in my opinion fish hotpot was more than mid range. Vegetable dishes were absolutely fantastic and I've never had any dish taste like that. If you are looking for a restaurant with great service and lots of attention, this is definitely not the place (We went to the restaurant at 12:30 and had to wait for 10 minutes to order food.) Came here with the boyfriend because it's close to my home. Ordered rice, green beans, chicken, and Szechuan (spelled Sichuan on the English menu...) soup. I also ordered sprite. Rice was rice Green beans were fine Chicken was decent Soup was just oil in a tiny bowl. $7 for a tiny bowl. It was disgusting and I love soup. Server didn't refill my water. When we asked her to recommend something, she said "rice." I asked, "what else?" She said "ummm green beans?" ....."what else?" "Ummmmmm maybe chicken?" Not helpful. They get one star for the green beans and for accepting credit cards The total came to almost $40. Absolutely ridiculous. Will not be coming back. I ordered take away from this place. 2 spring rolls (which were very good) Special fried rice, that was supposed to be filled with beef, BBQ pork and shrimp - there was 1 shrimp and maybe two pieces each of beef and BBQ pork. The rice was steamed with a bit of soya sauce not fried. It has zero flavour. The ginger beef was burnt through and through. As well as the sauce the ginger beef was in. A total was of $30 (which included the top to a very apologetic Asian girl) of course I didn't actually see the food until I got home and wasn't going back out to complain to I added my own stuff to at least make the rice palatable. I threw out the ginger beef. I think if I had been Chinese I would have received yummy food because the food I saw going out to the folks(who were Asian) in the restaurant looked and smelled amazing. read more

Heard the food was good. One afternoon decided to check it out finally. I entered and sat down by the window at a round table. Nobody around except some young kids eating. In the meantime I admire the filthy chairs with no padding, random strips of tinting on the windows, and general filth. Authentic Chinese I thought. About 4 minutes in a lady comes and looks at me in surprise as to what on earth could I want. She asks if im here to eat and then if a menu would be helpful. She asks me to move tables & hurry up. I haven't even got the menu yet. She flicks the sign on door to closed and insists I move to another table. I attempt to order chicken fried rice & ginger beer. I'm told the kitchen is out of chicken today. Tough to believe, I felt she just wants to get out fast. Lady brings out my first dish. About 10 minutes later the rice dish arrives and is slid onto my table. Nobody came to check up on me or refill my water. read more

Family lives in Victoria but I'm based out in Toronto. To be perfectly honest, compared to Downtown Toronto, this location would not be the gem of the city. That said, apples to apples, there are very limited solid Asian options in Victoria. That taken into consideration, this restaurant is a staple go to in the city. Decor is run down, front signage not luxuriously, it's a hole in a wall with tasty authentic Chinese food if you're into food and not particular about the renovation or atmosphere. Free parking in the back. Service is warm and homey, but don't expect western restaurant practice where they check on your table every so often if you're well attended. You need something, you flag someone down. Food is on they heavy, flavorful, savory, and spicy side. Bring a group as portions are quite ample and variety is key to family Asian sit down restaurants. Three star using Toronto standards but a four in Victoria BC if you're craving that Asian cuisine. Dine away! read more

Great food. Authentic Sichuan food. Can get a great spicy dish if you love the heat. Despite the name this is not a normal Hong Kong or Cantonese restaurant, they have great Mainland China dishes. I finally found my favourite dish here done right. I've tried the dish in over 20 places across Canada, but this is the only place that cooks it just like in China. So much more flavour! Ask for the Chinese menu, and if you can't read Chinese, just ask for a special recommendation, the staff is friendly and loves what they do. It might be a little hard to find, but worth circling around to make sure you don't miss it. P.S. If you love and want spicy food, they won't hold back. ;) read more

I was taking a one-day workshop in Victoria and someone in the class recommended Hong Kong West, saying the place was funky but the food was good. I decided to give it a try. The other reviewer said to not count the decor, but this place is beyond just funky. Even setting aside the really the old formica tables and chairs and walls that haven't been painted in years, this was just not an enjoyable place to sit and have a meal. First, the young waiter was mostly inattentive, taking too long to take my order, never checking back to fill my water, etc. Besides that, when he cleared tables, he brushed all the food scraps onto the floor, so it was covered with bits of meat, vegies and squished rice grains. Just gross. Besides this, at a table across from me were four young men who would have been kicked out of a McDonalds for their loud, rude behavior, but were allowed to sit and be obnoxious here, in part because I think they were friends of the wait-kid. When two young women came in to eat, one of the young men started making obscene sounds. Overall, just gross. The food: I ordered a bowl of Wor Won Ton soup and a dish with tofu and vegetables. The soup was different than what I was use to, but once I got used to the sweeter, fennel-flavored broth, it was okay. The tofu and vegies were less than mediocre: the vegies seemed to be boiled, not wok fried, and along with the tofu came with a brown gravy that had no other flavor except salt. Sat down around 5pm on a Thursday. Reviews are right, no decor, no music, zero ambience. Server greeted us and we pretty much told her that yelp reviews recommended the Chinese menu so we wanted her to recommend a few things. She offered the green beans, and the love chicken. We also got one medium bowl of rice to share. The rice was more than enough for two. My girlfriend also ordered the szechuan "soup" Green beans were pretty good. Rice was rice. My water was good. That's really about it. Love chicken was ok. The soup was inedible. It was basically a bowl of oil. We were told that's how it's made in China. I disagree though, I've had this soup before. This one was terrible, and $7 for a small bowl. It was $38 for everything. A little pricy for two people with no booze. The only reason it gets 2 stars is from the green beans. That soup was bad, like really bad, don't ever get it. Service was ok. Not good but not bad. Hard to judge when the dinner rush comes in and there's only 2 people. Don't waste your money eating here. They charged me 17$ for a pathetic-looking and sorry-tasting green bean stir fry in tiny portion. The staff are misrepresenting what each dish is like and are totally unapologetic about that. Save your time and money go to any place with way better food and service in reasonable price. Ask for the Chinese menu. Try the spicy chicken in black bean sauce. Dead ugly decor, lackadaisical staff, excellent food if you order right. I don't disagree 100 percent with the one star reviewer but try to go beyond the chow Mein and wor wonton and get to the fish stew, long bean and other items. I think it's excellent. read more

Just do it. Do you want great flavorful inexpensive Chinese food? Just go. Here's what you do: Show up, sit down, be patient (the entire place is run by a husband and wife so don't freak out if you have to wait a few minutes for your order to be taken). Once she comes to your table, tell her you want her best Sichuan (Soo-Chwan) food, and let her guide you to the right choices and amount of food for your group. You could be super adventurous and get some crazy things (frogs, pig's blood stew, etc..), or a little safer (Chicken, beef, pork, fish), but trust her judgement. We had the friend green beans, eggplant, fish hot pot and shredded beef. All were fantastic, although the beef wasn't as intensely flavored as the other three dishes so suffered a bit from comparison, although on it's own I'm sure it would be great. We went for "regular" spice, which we found to be good but we could have handled a little more. If you're not used to spice this would be fine, next time I might ask for "spicy". The total for 4 people with enough food to feed us again for dinner was about $55. This is a true hidden gem in Victoria. read more

If you're looking for authentic, home style Sichuan food, this is the place. Look beyond the utilitarian decor and misleading name and be prepared to have your tastebuds dazzled. Stick with the Sichuan menu and go for the following: Four Season Green Beans, Black Peppercorn Chicken, Ma Po Tofu (both meat and vegetarian versions), and Eggplant and Mushrooms in Garlic Sauce. Each dish is flavoured with a unique yet complementary sauce. If you're used to the milder flavours of Cantonese cuisine, the ginger beef (tangy, crunchy-chewy yum), the Shanghai noodles, the lemon chicken, Imperial Prawns and the "bai cai" (sautéed cabbage) are good counterpoints to offset spicier dishes. Try a chilled Chinese beer with your meal. Be adventurous and try what the tables filled with Chinese students are ordering. Yan and her family are warmly welcoming - this is a family-run business, so please be patient - the wait is so worth it.
