Closing this month June 2026- learned from a social media source. If it wasn't for my near by church I attend when possible, I wouldn't have known about this Chinese restaurant hidden near the end of N King Street by Jack in a Box. I dined there a few times years ago. I think they had more take out after covid. I want to visit another time before they close 6/27/26 from what was mentioned on social media. They have old school dishes which were good. It was the first time having beef stew foo jook. I wouldn't mind having that again with minute chicken cake noodles! Called for take away after an evening football game. The gentleman on the phone was helpful and precise. Going into the restaurant, there's plenty parking. It's located at the end of the plaza. Inside there were small groups of friends, a family and a single person eating there. You can tell it's a charming family-run restaurant. No frills, just good food at an excellent price. I still wanted to eat Chinese chicken salad for days now. So we're doing banking in the kalihi area and saw on yelp this Chinese restaurant menu they had Chinese chicken salad so I said to my husband let's make it take out. Located at a strip mall on King Street, Hong Nien is the end unit on the far right. It's been here a long time, but I've never noticed it. Inside, it's rather old school. There were about five small tables that can be joined together if you have a large group. Service was very polite and friendly. This resturant has been here for many years. I haven't been here since I moved to the Windward Side. When I worked at Um I St the girls would get take out at lease once a week. My wife and I stopped at Hong Nien Chinese Restaurant for lunch after dropping off our car for service at New City Nissan. This was an early lunch for us so we just ordered 2 items to dine-in and 4 items to take out to eat later with our kids. As we entered the restaurant, Mr. Zheng welcomed us into the restaurant and we sat down promptly for a dine in lunch. He quickly brought us water and took our order. He also brought plates, chopsticks, and hot tea. We ordered the Beef Oyster Sauce Cake Noodles and Kau Yuk for dine-in for our lunch. Since it was a Monday, we ordered the Monday special noodle dish, Beef Chow Fun with Black Bean Sauce, and also Crispy Gau Gee, Honey Walnut Shrimp, and Orange Chicken for take out to eat later with the kids.  The food came out pretty fast and hot. The Beef Oyster Sauce Cake Noodles was nicely prepared with a good flavored sauce and crispy cake noodles. There were ample toppings of meat and vegetables. It was a good combination of soft vegetables, gravy, and crispy noodles. The Kau Yuk was also nicely prepared and had a good flavor. There was good mix of lean and fatty pieces of meat. Both the portion size of the noodles and Kau Yuk was perfect for myself and my wife. It was a good meal with a good price for the quality and quantity of food. We later ate the Beef Chow Fun with Black Bean Sauce, Crispy Gau Gee, Honey Walnut Shrimp, and Orange Chicken with our kids for dinner. The Beef Chow Fun with Black Bean Sauce was terrific! It was expertly prepared with fresh ingredients and a good portion of Chow Fun. The Crispy Gau Gee, Honey Walnut Shrimp, and Orange Chicken was on par and good as one would expect for the price. My wife and I have been eating at Chinese Restaurants for over 40 years and Hong Nien Chinese Restaurant has a variety of good decently priced food that will surely satisfy the Chinese food craving. We recommend the Daily Lunch Specials. So stop by and Mr. Zheng will gladly help you with your order! The Black Bean Sauce is delicious! Typical Cantonese old style restaurant one might expect in Chinatown but this one located in Kalihi. Saw several local families enjoying the location and food. Very tasty cake noodle, chow fun, and salt and pepper spareribs. BYOB and owner was nice enough to let us stay almost one hour after they were supposed to close. read more

Every year on Lunar new year we order from here. The jai is tasty and service is fast. I like the crispy pork. I just wish they had steamed whole fish with the head and tail in black bean sauce with green onions and ginger. I like the online ordering feature but sometimes the order gets lost. Be sure to have it clearly stated when online ordering. Bookmark or screenshot your online order just in case. Phone ordering is better because it's not easily lost. Neighborhood, old school chinese food place. Flavors are good, value is good. They have an oyster sauce chicken on cake noodle for $11.50! I also got the spareribs with black bean sauce, ono with rice. They have weekday lunch specials, other specials. I remember the crispy chicken and their fried rice is good. So many of the Chinese fòod places now are mediocre. I went at dinner time and i think that wok was nice and hot, i think thats the key to truly good Chinese food. Also, this is really almost a 2 person show, the owner in the front and the cook in the back. He is always nice and works so hard, definitely want him to be able to make a living and stay open. My favorite Chinese restaurant! I've been coming here forever and it's as good now as it always was. Great place to eat-in or pick up takeout. Very consistent and reliable. Probably a family business as it is usually the same gentleman working there. He is very nice and respectable. Ok, so what's good? Some of my favorites are: steamed sea bass with soy ginger sauce, minute chicken (ala carte or with oyster sauce on cake noodle), and the char siu fried rice. Runner up items are: beef broccoli and orange chicken. Oh, and quite often I get the crispy gau gee (best with soy mustard). It was Sunday during covid, so we weren't expecting to see a crowd. To our pleasant surprise, there was a steady flow of customers. Waddaya know? They had the standard signage for masks being required and social distancing. It appeared as if only two nice employees were working and the dining area was dark/closed off due to covid. There were customers before and after us so that indicated regulars are happy with their food and service. Our order was done relatively quick and yes, the chicken skin was crispy enough to meet my expectations. As for the cake noodles, it seemed like a small portion. I came here a long time ago, when I was a kid, so I'm glad this place is still in business! This place has great Cantonese food and each item I have ordered has been delicious. I have ordered the beef stew with noodles, blackbean chicken with cake noodles, and the ginger chicken. Although I have only done take out, the food is ready when they said it would be, the owner is very kind and friendly, and the restaurant itself does allow dine in and is clean. My only complaint would be that I wish they would add more gravy, as their sauce is DELICIOUS! But it's a minor complaint for the quality and price you are getting the food at. I'll have to remember to take pictures next time as I usually order from here when at work. read more

We came to Hong Nien on Christmas Day and were so thankful that they were open! Their service was excellent and their food was pretty tasty. It is truly difficult to complain too much when your options are limited (beggars can't be choosers and all that). We took our order to go and they did an awesome job securing it into a box to assure to made it all the way home. The beef & eggplant was awesome! It was a bit heavy on the sauce, but we were pleased to find the beef very tender and the eggplant not too soft. A great combo of flavors! We would definitely order this dish again. The "pineapple shrimp" was a huge disappointment for $12... we got 6 pieces of fried shrimp that were overcooked to the point that the shrimp itself had shrunk up to fill only half of the hard, fried batter. It was accompanied by a few pieces of canned pineapple, and I guess that's what made it pineapple shrimp. The meat in the orange chicken was similarly overdone. Overall, the remainder of our order was average... chow mein, kimchi fried rice, and spring rolls. They were alright but nothing stand-out about them in presentation or flavor. We would order here again if another place we wanted to try was not available, but we probably won't go out of our way to eat their fare. read more

Popped in here to get a quick bite and pass some time. Surprised to find out they might have the best Wor Won Ton Mein in town. We had to run an errand and needed to kill some time. Had been to this place a few times in the past and knew they were always decent. Ordered a Wor figuring no matter how it came out, it would be decent. What was put down in front of me was wonderful. Immediately you notice a few decent sized shrimp floating in the top, then the won ton, and the abundance of veggies and pork pieces. Then you taste the char siu and sit in amazement. For $8.99, such a deal. The char siu was delicious. The tons were good. The broth was just right and melded with the noodles to make it a close to perfect WorTM. My comments focus on the food because I do takeouts from Hong Nien. First, it is difficult to beat the prices. Second, you get a lot for your money. Third, food is always delicious and flavorful. Fourth, they cook your dish when you order, and it doesn't take too long to complete the order. Fifth, there are many specials and recurring daily specials so you can choose the day for your discounted special dish. Sixth, the gentleman taking the orders (I think it's the owner) is humble and appreciative of your business. Seventh, there is always ample parking. If you go during the off-hours, you can park in front of the restaurant, just a few steps from the entrance. We stop by Hong Nien often and usually order two dishes to feed the three adults in the family. We all agree that Hong Nien is one of our favorite go-to Chinese restaurants. read more

Hands down the most underrated Chinese restaurant in Town. Friendly owners and awesome food! I spent the early party of the childhood in southern China, the taste of the restaurant reminded me of just that ! The taste is very authentic and full of flavor. I ordered the garlic shrimp and the beef stew funn in soup, the broth was full of flavor and the garlic shrimp was very crispy . the portions were very generous and the price is relatively low despite inflation. Will not be goin here EVER again. The guy was nice, food presentable but the food is bland. The sauces weren't tasteful and pretty sat in oil at the bottom of the dish. They're located on N King Street in Kalihi nextdoor to Jack in the box, plenty of free parking in front, and they're always busy with take out orders from all the businesses and residents around the area. Ordered a dinner plate for myself and my other half had the egg fuyung and steamed rice. Good old fashioned Cantonese style cooking, the owner is really friendly and talkative too, he's been running the business for over 25 years with his wife and family.
