Probably the best baked bao with the most filling on Oahu. Not dim sum level but the best for local style baked manapua

    Craig T.

Talking about highway robbery I wanted a quick snack for lunch . Came across U-Choice in located outside Don Quijote Kaheka. I ordered 1 Man Tai su and 3 pork hash my bill was over $7. I couldn't believe when the cashier told me the price . The pork hash price is $1.65 per Wow! I guess I need to go to the Manapua truck I can probably get 4x pork hash and noodles w/a drink and it will still be under $7 bucks lol . For convenience and if your at Don Quijote Kaheka and wanted to eat Dim sum than probably go for it . Other than that I would rather go elsewhere.

Great Dim Sum & Even Better Service We stopped by U Choice Inn to pick up baked manapuas and other dim sum to bring to our family on the Big Island. I called in my order for a 2pm pickup, and everything was ready and waiting when I arrived--super smooth process. I ordered: - 14 manapuas - 12 pork hash - 4 curry flaky pan - 6 gin dui - 3 duck bao (white folded buns) Total came out to $110, and it was well worth it. The manapuas were large, generously filled, and had a slightly sweet glaze brushed on the outside--really tasty. The rest of the dim sum was flavorful and fresh, perfect for sharing. What really stood out was the service. I asked if they could separate the order into individual boxes since the food was going to different households, and they were more than happy to help. One of the staff members even asked if we were taking the food off-island. When I said yes, she explained that it's best to pack the manapuas at room temperature so the box doesn't get soggy from condensation. I hadn't even thought about that, and I really appreciated her taking the time to explain it. That kind of care and attention makes all the difference. The food was solid, but the thoughtful interaction and genuine hospitality were the icing on the cake. I'll definitely be coming back.

Takeout Lunch in Honolulu, Hawaii... Located at the far left end of the Don Quijote - Kaheka Street complex, U-Choice In has been around for years. It's an old school, dingy, establishment (with no air-conditioning) that serves local style Chinese cuisine. The door is kept open for the line of customers. Free shared parking is tight in the front of the building, but there's also a covered parking structure across Poni Street. Service is efficient and business-like. There was a line out the door, so every worker was busy. The line on the right is for plate lunches. There were many hot entrée choices. The line on the left is for dimsum, roast pork, and cha siu. Just give your order to one of the workers and they will package your food for you and tell the cashier how much to charge. I got a custard tart, rice cake, and coconut Jin due. The custard tart was small and average. The coconut Jin dui had good filling, but the mochi layer was a bit thick and chewy. The rice cake was the best of the 3 items! Some day, I'll go back and try other dimsum such as cha siu cherng funn, half moon, and taro puff. By the way - the advertising isn't correct. I asked for shrimp and spinach Dumpling - there was none. I also didn't see any dimsum with green wrappers.

Located by Don Quijote, U-Choice In is a walk in spot with a plethora of dim sum offerings and other Chinese food. We parked in the parking lot out front and ended up going to U-Choice In and Don Quijote. We went earlier in the morning because we heard that there can be a line as the day goes on. Eventually, a line did form and most people seemed to know what they wanted coming in. The service was swift and the prices were OK. There are some tables outside of Don Quijote if someone wanted to sit down and eat. We decided to get the steamed charsiu manapuas and some siu mai. The manapuas were good, not a huge size, but they were very tasty. Next time, we will try a baked manapua or possibly some of the their other food offerings that can be seen behind the casing when you walk into the space.

Ordered the mapo tofu and the jook.....both wonderful and satisfying. The service is always fast and the cozy nook is always full and noisy. My go to place for consistent good food and dim sum.

Take out dim sum cam be a shot in the dark sometimes. This was no blind shot. I've passed by U Choice lots of times but never bothered to try their Managua. I was missing out. I only tried the char siu sue and baked bao but both rate a solid 4 with me. The outer pastry was light and either flaky (sue) or soft ( bao). I'm more used to a pie dough-like pastry fir the sue, but this dough, more croissant-like, works, too. Both had a generous portion of chopped char siu filling, which was very moist... Definitely coming back to try their other dim Sims and their noodles, too! Great friendly service and parking in thr DQ lot wasn't bad either.

Service is quick and fast. My cousin really liked the roast pork. The manapua filling tasted alright. The har gow was decent. The rice cake was delicious! This place is a takeout option only. It is very casual. The workers were friendly and patient as we decided what we wanted to order.

This review is based only on the steamed manapua. Looking at the restaurant, it's typical for a local style take out. It has a ready made take out counter for your starch and proteins. There's a dim-sum counter to get your whole roast duck, manapua or pork hash. But, the steamed manapua. The bread is the same kind of bread like the roast duck bun. So it's not the kind of soft fluffy style you would find at dim sum. I'll just call that one the " classic " style. So it's not the classic style but the texture is smooth, firm but still fluffy. The char-siu filling is good. Moist and meaty. Not overly sweet. The chicken filling was skimpy and maybe a little bit dry. Hard to tell since there was so little of it. In a the area? It's an option.

Today was a slow day at U Choice In. There was only one person in the place when I entered and he had already placed his order. I couldn't find anyone to take my order for a few minutes. I saw a sign to ring the bell for service, but lol there was no bell. After looking for someone, I saw a lady and she asked me what I wanted. It was clear that English was not her first language. So I switched to my Chinese American terrible attempt to request dim sum. Somewhat successful because everything else I just pointed to it. I picked up a steamed Manapua for my Dad. He loved it. The char siu steamed Manapua is rated 4.5 stars out of 5 stars. I was surprised that they sold palmiers! I asked if they made it locally. She answered in the affirmative. I tried one and it was good but not as flaky and buttery as I like them. I would rate the palmiers at 3 stars out of 5 stars.

You can check off what you want while you're waiting. As soon as you get seated, you can just hand over the menu to the server and it makes the process a lot faster. It didn't take that long for us to get our food. We ordered a lot of items. We got the shrimp dumplings, black bean spareribs, beef look fun, Shanghai pork dumplings, steamed salted egg custard buns, pan fried turnip cake, seafood bean curd roll, sesame balls with red bean, taro puffs and chicken dumplings. Everything was on point except the sesame balls with red bean. They were small and the breading was thick. Pass on those. My two favorites were the black bean spareribs and the salted egg custard buns. I love salted duck eggs. The prices here are a bit more than the average dim sum spot. Most of the steamed baskets were $7-$8. If you use your American Savings Bank debit card you get a discount: $7 off $50, $15 off $100 or $75 off $500. Free parking in the basement of the building.

Better late than never, but come too late and missed out on the good stuff?…read more Honolulu Seafood Restaurant is a sister restaurant to Kapiolani Seafood Restaurant. Located in Downtown in the same space where Yong Sing, Mandalay, and the short-lived Bourbon Street used to be. Inside feels and looks essentially the same as the prior restaurants. Huge, open, two levels. Would you believe there was once a time where the second floor was an option to sit because it was just that busy? Hours is basically 10am everyday till 3pm, then 5-930pm. Seems like the hours are geared towards Downtown workers. Where to park? 8am-5pm, Monday-Friday, park in the Ali'i Place Parking garage. Entrance is right past the restaurant. Only 75 cents per half hour and restaurant validates one dollar. After 5pm on weekdays, and 8-1am on weekends, park at Bishop Square Parking. Entrance is across from the restaurant, entrance from the left lane of Alakea. Cost is $1.50 with validation. The regular menu is exactly the same as Kapiolani Seafood Restaurant. However, the dim sum is not the case. It's much, much less. There's only 16 total, and 7 more on weekends only. It's essentially the bare basics (but no beef ball!). All the dim sum looks exactly the same as Kapiolani Seafood Restaurant, but everything was on the bland side and just felt like it was missing something. Steamed Spareribs was one note and meat was not as tender. Beef Look Funn was good. The look funn had perfect thinness and texture. If have this dish, how come cannot have steamed beef balls? Chicken Feet was good. Soft, tasty, and meaty. But just ate and felt one note. Pan Fried Shrimp and Chives Dumplings was pretty good. Pan fried very well. Generous amount of filling. Just on the bland side. Chicken Sticky Rice in Lotus Leaf was pretty good! Soft, moist mochi rice with a good amount of tasty filling. The Bean Curd Roll with Pork was probably the most flavorful dim sum of the meal. Jam-packed with tasty and flavorful filling. Overall, the dim sum was decent and almost similar to Kapiolani Seafood, but it was a touch on the bland side and a slight step below. Service was good. Friendly and attentive. Food came out pretty quick. Inside was cool, spacious, and comfortable. I want to come back on my lunch break! I don't mind dim sum'ing solo! Hopefully there'll be more dim sum choices. I remember seeing on social media they had some unique items only at this location. But I guess I'm too late! **I heard some news, maybe rumors, but the Kapiolani Seafood location might be forced to move due to that and the next lot being torn down for..... you guessed it, more condos! It might have an effect on the Honolulu location. We'll see.

Everything was delicious, but my favorite was the deep fried eggplant with shrimp. As an eggplant lover, I appreciated how well it was prepared, and the shrimp were large and juicy. Each dish was fresh and flavorful. I do wish there was a slightly larger menu selection. I was hoping to order egg custard tarts for dessert, but they didn't have it. Fortunately, the lava custard sesame balls were yummy! Service was efficient, and the restaurant itself was spacious and clean. While Tim Ho Wan is a bit pricier than some other dim sum spots, it's kinda expected given its well-known name and for being in Waikiki. This was perfect timing for us. However once seated, we had to ask for water 4 times, sauces twice, and waited a 10-15 minutes for someone to stop by and take our order. When someone did come to get our order they told us it was the only time we could order dim sum. This struck us as odd. We had mentioned that the hose explained it would be 1-1/2 hours until last call. They mumbled something at us out of what we felt was annoyance then stuck to this order being our last call for dim sum. We proceeded to order our entire meal quickly since we often eat at Chinese restaurants and generally know what we felt like eating for us and our kids. Around 3:30 (10 min or so after we ordered ) the server came back and told us they are out of 1/3 of what we ordered which included picking duck and look fun. Again very odd on a Sunday afternoon. So we kept what they did have available and continued to wait. At this point still waiting for our waters. As the sitting went on we observed a table who sat after us get their waters food and everything they asked for quickly. We waited almost 20 minutes for water and rice that we had to ask for multiple times. The rice still wasn't brought out until almost 30 minutes in, which was after 3 items from our order was brought out at very slow rates compared to other tables who we overheard ordering. We also needed to cancel our crispy noodles that we ordered for the kids as it was going on 45min and the last thing left on our order although it was the first item on our receipt and the first item requested. Overall the flavor of the food was good and the only reason I gave stars, however my family and I felt borderline discriminated against and service was very bad. I do not recommend this place for anything other than takeout.

Loved the large thin-crusted coconut/peanut jin dui, just how my mom used to make them! Most restaurants don't "roll" them enough to get that thin crust, but here, they make it right! * Sticky rice in lotus leaf. Chunks of lup cheong and whole salted egg yolks with mochi rice make this a winner! * Char siu look fun. This is one of my favorite dishes; however, it was not prepared well. Generous chunks of hardened and seemingly old char siu filled the look fun, making it difficult to eat and with a lack of tender flavored char siu. Loved that the sweet sauce is served separately in a squeeze bottle so that you can use as much as you want. * Dong Po Pork. This Hangzhou dish is pork belly braised in soy sauce, Shaoxiang wine, and rock sugar until it's tender and melts in your mouth. The pork bell is tied with a string to hold its shape, and staff will use a scissors to remove it. This dish is savory, sweet and has a rich caramelization; served with broccoli to balance the richness of the sauce. Eaten with rice, I really enjoyed this dish! Well plated and executed! Portions are generous, but price point may be contentious, as some dishes appear to be over-priced, like the char siu look fun. We arrived mid-morning on a weekday, and it was not very crowded. Staff was very friendly, attentive, and bilingual, which made communication easy. Service was quick and efficient. No moving carts, as you're given a sheet of listed dim sum to check off the ones you want to order. The large interior is spacious and clean. Its banquet hall can hold a max of 30+ tables for a private party. There are also smaller private rooms. Extensive renovations were made after the previous restaurant closed. Hours of operation are Thurs to Tues 8a to 9p and Wed 8a to 3p. Regular entrees are not prepared until 10a when the cooks arrive for work. Private parking available in back of the restaurant, municipal parking lots are nearby, and metered street parking are available. Extensive delicious menu offerings, generous portions, and efficient and friendly customer service will likely result in return visits to try other items on the menu. We wish the Liangs continued success with their restaurant! Support local!

After renovation, it's much cleaner and brighter inside. Their Cheung fun and Congee are always my favorite. Chinese donut was not as good as before. Tastes like pre-made. Wonton soup was tasty. If you pass by Chinatown, Lam's is one of the good places to go.

Inside, the space feels busy with tables and people moving around. There are benches inside for those waiting for a table. We had to wait a bit before we were seated but they seemed efficient in ushering people in and out of the restaurant. The middle had smaller tables, which seemed most suitable for two people. The sides had larger tables for larger parties. The tables felt pretty close together but we enjoyed the stool/bench chairs we sat on. They were different than what we are used to in restaurants. Our order was taken quickly. We decided to get the beef chow fun, yang chow fried rice, and cheong fun. The cheong fun was good, especially after adding hoisin sauce. The texture was soft and the portion was quite decent. The chow fun was also yummy. It was tasty without being overbearing. The fried rice was our favorite. It was flavorful and included a variety of ingredients. The prices were not bad either, considering the portion sizes. We hope to be back one day to try more of what they have!
