We wish there was an option not to include the smoked fish, but there isn't. I'm not sure how I feel about giving them 2 stars, but I am willing to give them another try...another time and hopefully it will bump it up a little. And it is also my first time having Filipino food, and I was so disappointed. I've never been to the old location, but this one is spacious and the decor is interesting. When you first walk in, it smells delicious and you can't wait to sit down and order. I had ordered a kare kare. It is a braised oxtail and tripe in a "peanut sauce." First off, there were no "peanut" present in the sauce whatsoever. like none. The tripe were big pieces and uncut, so it is a little chewy to bite. They were also not cleaned well, therefore it gave off a fishy smell. The oxtail were okay, the meat fell right off the bone so it was easy to eat. Overall, the dish was very bland and under flavored. It looked like a curry, and I was hoping it would taste like the sort..but it didn't. My boyfriend got the pritong tilapia, basically it is just a WHOLE tilapia deep fried. They also served it with their "house spiced vinegar." The fish... was fishy. Because it was not rubbed in any spice or flavoring, the fish was very fishy. Their sauce seemed like it was just soy sauce mixed with vinegar because there were no "spice" to it. Our meal was served with rice and some sort of fish or shrimp paste. I have eaten my fair share of fish and shrimp paste. I mean, Vietnamese people know how to ferment their shit man. I digress, anyways...the smell of that paste was so pungent. The taste was delicious to the bland meal, but I could not get over that smell. I did not find it very pleasant. Owner offered to seat us in better seating after the table was cleared from previous customers: this was very much appreciated. Had the fried bangus and nilaga. We are proud of this Filipino restaurant to which we have taken many guests. Ever since they moved to this Carol Stream location they upgraded the entire dining experience. Not only is the food still delicious with generous servings and nicely presented, but the staff is younger and friendly. The Filipino decor on the east wall is tastefully done, and you can learn about Philippine history and culture by taking a close look. Good quality tables and chairs are not usual at Asian restaurants, so I am glad they invested in them. But my #1 pet peeve with Asian restaurants is the typical filthy, icky restrooms and the hallways that lead to them. I've been going to the old location since forever but something about this new location just somehow made Hong Ning 100 times better. the art work was beautifully displayed and the vibe of the restaurant from the food to the furniture (tables/benches) really made me feel at home. Went two times in the last two days. The interior is really nice. Enough to take guests when they come or for a fancier outing consisting of Filipino deliciousness. First time the service was A+, but the second day it was so slow...they also forgot to give us rice as our entrees were coming out and one of our dishes came out as we finished our food. Our first time at the new location. Kind of far for us, but the food was delicious. We had very low expectations of the staff, and were thus not disappointed. They gave us pitchers of water, so we did not need to hunt anyone down to refill our glasses. We ordered the calamari (skip it - huge rubbery rings of seafood), lechon roll (lots of fat, but the meat and skin were crispy and tasty), kare-kare (plenty of beef cubes, but I prefer it with more oxtail and more sauce), a pancit (a bit salty), a grilled chicken, halo halo (yum!), and a pandan sundae (very good!). Went back for a kamayan feast with some friends with relatively high standards. We had such a good time! The service has improved a lot and they even took the time to explain the background behind the feast. I used to come to this restaurant when it was located in Glendale heights the restaurant was small but the food was good and the service was better. Hong Ning relocated in Carol Stream IL. The restaurant is bigger and the waits is about 20-30 min long with out a reservation. The service is not good at all and the food has no taste to eat the rice is not complementary with your order it is an additional charge with out your knowledge. Your server will not tell you the extra charges to your bill. I was hoping to enjoy the food I used to liked but somehow they lost their seasoning touch. All the food was bland I did not cared for nothing the servers are rude they never smile and the young girls and they bring your water the slam the items on the table line they don't want to work here. Best Filipino Restaurant in the Chicago area period. I've been to others you know who they are. It's the best because of the quality and uniqueness. Let's start with the Seafood Kare Kare, Pata Tim, and Java Rice to name a few there's more in their menu that no other Filipino restaurant carries. Today I had the Ginataang Gulay - Amazing. Guys, let me start off by saying that this was the nicest Filipino restaurant that I've ever set foot in. Beautifully decorated! What was even better was the service here was impeccable- which is really a treat at an Asian restaurant. Definitely service with a smile - just like we were family! By the time we got there at noon, there was a line out the door. So plan accordingly on Holidays because again, I can understand why families would want to celebrate here. Although we didn't stay on Father's Day, I did order takeout last night since we had a hankering for some comfort food. (This review is purely based on the takeout - will have to revisit to dine in). The food left a lot to be desired unfortunately. This type of food is always going to compare back to mom's cooking and Hong Ning was a slight disappointment. We ordered the following: Lumpia Shanghai: Can't go wrong with this starter. Everyone of all ages love these bit size egg rolls. My kids devoured them. Hard to mess this up. Crispy Dinuguan: Loved the flavor, but could use more spice. The consistency at other places is usually too thin and watery; Hong Ning's could be thinned out just a touch. We didn't care too much for the meat as it was too tough, but the kids finished all of the sauce with their rice. Sizzling Sisig: It was all right. 'Nuff said. Palabok: The flavor was there, but it was really dried out! Pork Sinigang: Pork was delicious. Broth was savory, but very tart and sour - not balanced enough for my taste. Wish they used long beans instead of normal green beans/snap peas - but again this is being compared to my MIL's. Halo Halo: they pack the ingredients in! You get a lot of the condiments instead of just ice and milk. So good! Leche Flan: delicious! Creamy and luscious! Taho: Husband enjoyed it, but the rest of us did not. We'll have to go back and give dining in a chance to see if the food is better in-house. I want to like you, Hong Ning because you're close and I can't cook Filipino food! We came here at the recommendation of a friend, who said they served pretty authentic Filipino food. Came in, found it to be a cozy, rather busy restaurant. What really stood out to me was the unique decor and cleanliness of the place. I've never really had too much experience with Filipino food, so I'm not going to comment on authenticity (since I really have nowhere in Chicago to compare it to--gotta hit up Uncle Mike's, etc). But, our food experience was great. We ordered the chicken/pork adobo & chicken inasal and didn't have to wait very long. I appreciated that the grilled chicken wasn't dry, and the adobo was cooked till the meat was tender & the flavor had saturated through. Yum! I am definitely a fan of Hong Ning. Came here on Sunday (11/26/2017) after church with the family. It was so good to enjoy Filipino food, there isn't much options in Denver, CO. The food portions are big enough to be shared. Their garlic fried rice is just like how my lola made it. We had 3 orders. The Lumpia Shanghai comes in 15 pieces. The crispy binagoongan was so good I wish I can eat it now. The pritong tokwa was a little overcooked for our tasting. The seafood kare-kare was good according to my Uncle but the vegetables were a little hard. He is use to them being softer. I love Daing ng bangus but we ordered the pinaputok ng bangus instead. They are both great. Oh how I miss bangus! We also ordered the pinakbet (a kampampangan favorite) it was also delicious. The pansit palabok was made a little different from how I had it. Next time I will get the bihon guisado. The sinigang (shrimp) was also very good. I wish they had kangkong like the original recipe. A lot of food huh? Lastly we ordered the Halo-Halo and shared it among the 5 of us. My mom and I fought over the nata de coco (both of our favorites). Went with a friend who never tasted a Filipino food and he was pleased. We ordered Lechon Kawali, Chicken Adobo, Seafood Karekare, Bowl of Garloc Fried Rice, and Halo halo. All were good and tasty. Unfortunately the fish paste for the Seafood Karekare was not within our like of sight and hidden behind the huge bowl of Karekare so we ate without it; I wished we would've known as I don't normally eat this dish. It was bland and my friend agreed given to what was mentioned, we wished it was on plain sight. Lechon Kawali was great and crunchy, though the sauce was the generic liver sauce (Mang Tomas) nothing special there. The server was great and suggested some for us and we tried it, such as ordering a bowl of rice instead of 3 cups of rice. Thank you for that. But once we ate, we were only checked one time and we had to get the attention of other servers so we can ask for something. Observing the servers, there was a lot of talking amongst themselves and that could be one reason why we weren't paid good attention, also it would be appreciated if all of them smiled and not look that they were having a bad day or just had a poker face. Terrible service. I asked for a pitcher of water, the waiter said yes but didn't come back, so I looked back to where all the waitstaff was standing and he was freaking sitting! Our original waitress was sort of in a daze, and did not come back to ask how the food was; and to think it wasn't even packed in the restaurant. The way I was treated in "American/Italian restaurants" was far better, even with the fact that I'm Filipino. They have good food and I have been here thrice but because of their service today, it took away the joy of enjoying our meal. Now let's talk about the downside; service is so slow and the food are a bit pricey. There's this one time I ordered rice late as I could not decide so all the dishes we ordered came one by one and I saw my rice just sitting at the counter. I nearly just went and get it by myself. We ordered pretty much the main traditional dishes: crispy pata, beef soup, pata tim, fried rice, halo-halo, kare-Kare, pinaputok na bangus. The servings were satisfactory. But overall, the food lacks flavor, the meats could be more tender, and needs more time for flavor to set in. The pata tim was one of my greater disappointments -- the hocks tasted gamey, and wasn't cleaned/shaved well of pig's hair. Kare Kare was tough, and lacks the usual creamy flavor of the dish. I was about to walk out when she said that , but I was still being nice because the old Hong Ning was very good. We ordered sizzling tangigue (king fish) , it was awful. Too dry and very oily, the fish was not fresh at all. Also ordered the pork bbq and it tasted "funny". The shrimp was oily and very salty. After our meal we still waited for freakin 30 mins for our server to check up on us if we are done, I saw her in the back sitting , talking and laughing at her co workers.
