I really love this little store, and I do mean little, but she has a lot packed in there. Great selection of freezer meats and fish, even Unagi. I bought the tiniest baby bok choy I have ever seen. They're like the size of a large snail. I also bought some sprouted mung bean sprouts and I am looking forward to a stir-fry today with some pork belly. Mmmm mmmm! She has a wonderful selection of shaved shabu shabu; beef, pork and pork belly. I didn't pay attention too much because she was digging in the freezer for me to look for the Unagi. Popped on by to Hong's Oriental Market and learned about the rich history of this store. Plenty of parking and they had everything you need perfectly organized. The freshly made banchan by the owner looked so good too. Didn't have a chance to buy any as I didn't have a cooler for the ride home, but will definitely need to pick some up the next time I am in town. The owner is so incredibly sweet as well. I'll keep this review short and sweet. Hong's Market is a tiny mom & pop shop in Marina that carries a few Korean goods such as ramen and housewares (i.e. rice sifting bowls, cutlery, and other kitchen essentials) as well as the standard vegetables that are commonly used in Korean cuisine. Their prices are competitive and their service - well - very much Korean, lol. What makes me a dedicated fan of Hong's Market is their homemade kimchi. To be entirely honest, I've hated the move to Monterey mostly due to the cuisine difference compared to Los Angeles, which happens to be home to (in my opinion) some of the best Korean groceries and restaurants this mankind has witnessed. I have been to a few Korean spots here and I found it rather lacking. Yes, I've been spoiled by LA...don't hate. Yet, their kimchi does my palate justice. Freshly made by the wife, who is seriously proud of it and does NOT hesitate to show it...it's really as good as it gets around here. [Side Story] I finally met the wife after several visits and she is so different from her husband, who carries the standard ol'school Korean male demeanor of being super serious about everything. While jokes hit the wall with him, she, on the other hand, jokes back in her own cute way. I told her how much I'm impressed with her kimchi as well as how her husband seems proud of the fact that his wife makes it. She beamed and said he's proud of him and how hard he works too. I joked back saying, "Are you sure he's not lazy? You seem to do everything around here." She replied, "No, I hit him if he is lazy." (Displays a flurry of punches - Bruce Lee style). This review is for the yummy kim chee they sell! I am for sure a huge fan! My boyfriend's parents live in the area and usually buy kim chee from here. I tried it once and had to have more! It's specially made at this market, which made me sad since we live in San Jose. Luckily, he's such a lovely boyfriend and we get to make a stop here when we visit! (: It's about $8 for a tub and is so worth it. This place is pretty tiny, so keep a good look out or you can easily pass it up. read more

I don't want to leave any stars but I have to so I am only leaving one. I love Korean people and korean culture and korean food but this store owner is completely rude. I was there with my mom and grandmother and the shop is very tiny, its hard to get around but we were looking at some items that were near his counter and he looked to be very impatient and annoyed that we were "in his way". When my mom and grandmother moved to look at something else the guy went back behind his counter and grumbled something I couldn't hear and was shaking his head. If we were in his way all he needed to do was ask if we wouldn't mind moving over so he could get back in. I definitely won't be coming back here. There are other korean stores that have a lot more stuff and have nicer, more appreciative workers. I was really excited at first to go in there, especially after having such delicious korean food. I am really disappointed and angered by his rudeness toward my mom and grandmother. Never again! read more
