You see, last Christmas I gave you my heart and the very next day, you gave it away. This year, to save me from tears........no, no. This never happened to me but Wham's "Last Christmas" which was written by George Michael, is overly played during the holidays in Japan. On a serious note, last Christmas I was jonesing for a yule log. I saw posts on IG and when I attempted to order one at a bakery on S King St, I was advised it was too late. At a Japanese themed bakery I was offered the option of a Christmas cake but wasn't in a mood for strawberry shortcake. I was on a mission. I recall attending a Christmas dinner at my cousin's a few years back where someone brought Yule logs and found that they were from Elvin's Bakery (EB). I also did a search on EB's photo gallery and saw one posted so I gave them a call. Placing an order via telephone was literally a piece of cake. It was confirmed to a tee and was also advised their closing on Christmas Day so pick up would be on Christmas Eve. I made payment over the phone. All done. The Yule log was a hit at Christmas dinner where it was visually stunning and tasty. It was not overly sweet nor dry. Well executed and decorated beautifully. So why not 5-stars? Picking it up was a shocker when the Yule log was placed in a cake box that clearly was meant for a 1/2 sheet cake (?) size so you had to be extra careful when transporting and storing. There was no support nor fillers in the box for the quite empty box as the Yule log was not meant for the box provided. In closing, I'm grateful EB came through with an amazing dessert for our holiday dinner but was caught off guard with their boxing. I'll need to think twice about ordering a Yule log again from them and will definitely order earlier and seek the options on Oahu before deciding on where to go.

This is the only standing Kulu Kulu and I hope this place does not close, or if it does relocate, come closer to Central Oahu where the rent is cheaper, haha (hint). This location is on the outer edges of Waikiki on Hobron Lane in Eaton Square. I rarely venture to Waikiki, and if I do make the dreaded drive to "town", this place and Kan Sushi will be the only regular places where I will make my stop(s), because its so worth it. I've had a long-standing love-affair with Kulu Kulu from the Shirokiya Food Court location with it's waffle bears and Hello Kitty waffles, the takeout Nama Chocolate cups stocked at Mitsuwa Marketplace and now here, in town. The Ube Coconut Mousse $6.95 blew our minds, it was THE best tasting thing, ever. Both the ube and the coconut were not cloying, and as with all of their treats, not overly sweet either. That's why I love Japanese pastries, they get the sweetness just perfect and I have no idea how they mastermind that ratio! Strawberry Panna Cotta $5.95 was creamy, flavorful, delicious and surprisingly light and refreshing for such a creamy dessert. I normally don't get this kind of combination of flavors, and it tasted like something you'd get in a Michellin-rated establishment. Looking back at the photos, I see vanilla bean seeds in the panna cotta, so every loving detail and nuance shows through with each mouthful. Nama Chocolate $5.75 is my go-to chocolate LOVE. It's cut into cool creamy semi-sweet squares dusted with cocoa and it melts in your mouth! This is my favorite of all things that Kulu Kulu makes. I actually enjoy this better than the famous Royce Chocolates from Japan. We ordered another seasonal Strawberry dessert slice cake but it was eaten before I could review (and/or taste it); I've heard it was very very delicious. This place is so good that I plan to bring my friends who will be visiting from Virginia here to try their pastries. I also plan to support this business for as long as I can and make more frequent trips to town just to get these amazing desserts.

Because of this, I would get one almost everyday when visiting Japan The bread is baked fresh daily and everything is much lower in price (compared to other bakeries) It's always busy, so that just goes to show that the community also enjoys this beloved patisserie. Early bird gets the worm…read more I've been to 85°C Bakery Cafe Ala Moana (85) multiple times and just realized I haven't written a review yet. This store had its soft opening in October 2022 and has expanded to another store in Kapolei August 2023. 85 hails from Taiwan and started business in 1984. They offer quality baked goods using Asian ingredients such as taro, mochi, sesame and pork sung (floss) and boba. There's also an extensive list of hot and cold drinks you can get here. There are over 1000 locations internationally with most of them in Taiwan and China. They can also be found in Hong Kong, Australia and USA. Like most bakeries, limited quantities of baked goods are offered during the morning and highly recommended to come here earlier in the day for a better selection. Most of my visits are sadly in the afternoon after work but my last visit was memorable. My friends and I just got through celebrating a friend's birthday at a nearby restaurant where on the way back to my car I made a pitstop to here. As expected the shelves were quite bare with limited offerings but they had what I wanted: marble taro. I had just eaten dinner and was full but picked one for the road and paired it with a taro lavender latte. I literally had no room in my stomach even though over an hour had passed since I got home so I had the roll and drink for breakfast the next morning. The marble taro roll was just as good as I remembered. It was soft with a nice texture contrast with the creamy, mashed taro paste in between. It had just a good amount of sweetness where I could indulge and not feel guilty. The star had to be the taro lavender latte which I didn't have high expectations for. I like to sample drinks with lavender as I do enjoy floral essence as it's not offered at many places. I had requested my drink to be 50% sweet, which was the right decision as I need to watch my sugar intake. Service was above average. It wasn't busy when I arrived so the line moved quickly. The guy at the counter was energetic and courteous which made my experience there pleasant. It was past 7pm where there were some people utilizing the dining area but it was quiet. 85 can be very lively during peak hours with heavy foot traffic. Overall, I'm a fan of 85 where I'll be sure to stop by again. Just need to be careful as my numbers for sugar and cholesterol are being monitored and I'm currently on medication.

In the box were some mochi egg tarts. At first bite, OMG, it was delicious! The tart is the same size of the ones they sell at dim sum restaurants. Crust is nice and flakey, filling is mochi, and topped by a layer of egg custard with a brow sugar glaze. The combination of the mochi with the egg custard complemented each other nicely & making me want more. I will definitely check this place out the next time I'm in the area. They also have a Kapolei location. From their website pics, they have a lot more goodies & I'm sure it'll be hard to decide which ones to choose.

The single scoop is $6.80 while the double scoop is $1 more so that is a better deal or if you're with someone, just split a double scoop to make it more affordable than two single scoops. There was a good amount of choices in flavors, around 20+. Next time I'll have to take a Lactaid pill and try the dairy flavors!

Our entire family loved it, and we'll definitely be back. My personal favorites were the coffee and pistachio flavors, which were both absolutely delicious. The only minor downside was during the sampling process. I asked to try two different flavors, but both were placed on the same tasting spoon, making it difficult to taste each flavor individually. It would have been nice to sample them separately before deciding. Overall, that was a very small issue compared to how amazing the gelato was. If you're looking for a delicious dessert, I highly recommend stopping by Mangiamo Gelato!
