Second time here and just had the shrimp kabob. Delicious! And I'm a picky eater! I'm also never a fan of spicy food, but it had just the right amount of heat for that Louisiana kick I've heard about. I've never had Louisiana style cookin' before, but this place has made me fall in love with it and crave it on a hot summer day. I've been wanting to come here since moving to Denton a couple weeks ago. Love seafood and finally tried them. Got the hoochie platter. Crab legs, shrimp, sausage, corn and potatoes. Pretty good oyster poboy from the perspective of someone who used to live in New Orleans.

This is a very good seafood restaurant. The menu is simple and easy to navigate, which I imagine helps them concentrate on their best dishes. The dishes are offered both in full and half sized portions. It gets even better as combos are available if you want to mix and match their fried food offerings. The hushpuppies are some of the best, if not the best, I have tried. Hot, crispy on the outside, and soft enough on the inside, with lots of flavor, not just the average fried piece of dough. The seafood itself seems very fresh and it was good. Nobody got sick after eating there as it can happen specially with seafood. Some of the items in the menu are seasonal which makes sense if you are trying to sell fresh stuff and you are located in the middle of the texan desert. The bread it seems is also special (besides being fresh and made on the premises). The manager on duty told me the story about one of the restaurant founders bringing the family recipe from the bakery that had been in the family for a couple generations. It was very good!! It is a new location so things are not perfect all the time. Some of the staff had a bit of a young and inexperienced feeling to them, but they were still trying hard to be good and provide a good service. My one and only real complaint. Please allow substitutions! This day and age I don't know of any places that don't allow for substitutions specially of rice or fries for either vegetables or other fried stuff. You can charge more and take more time, but definitely I can hear people complaining about this. You offer the combos already, why not make it 100% flexible for the customer. Anyway we liked the place and we will be back when we are in the area. By the way the beer and wine selection seems rather good for a casual dining place. Wow, I had low expectations when I arrived, but it was awesome. Ordered the fried shrimp, gumbo, and beans and rice. The breading on the shrimp was light yet tasty, and the they were large and cooked perfectly. The steak fries were also cooked expertly and well seasoned. The gumbo was a surprise, the fish and shrimp were added to it right before serving, so the fish and shrimp were not over cooked. Best gumbo I have ever eaten. The rice and beans were made with brown rice and also excellent. My wife loved the coleslaw and when she mentioned it to the owner how good it was he thanked her and said it was his mother's recipe. The staff was attentive, and the owner was on site and talked to my wife and wished us as a warm good night as we left. Bottom line, great food, wonderful people, and an enjoyable evening. read more

I had the fried Catfish and Shrimp basket, that comes with Steak Fries and Hush Puppies, both fish and shrimp were well breaded, crispy and not mushy. I am not a big fan of Hush Puppies, but they have some killer ones, the best I have ever had, wish there had been more in the basket. My wife had the Mexican Shrimp Cocktail, she LOVED it. You order at the register then sit down and the drinks and food are brought to your table. There are several s for plastic ware, napkins and sauces. The food and service was OUTSTANDING. Four Stars, but didn't get it right for a Party of ONE! . The party of five (entered Hoochies Denton behind me and ordered after me) received their food before I received my order (more than ten minutes). I watched them being served (about 10 feet feet behind me). I over-heard a mix-up over a catfish dish (I ordered catfish). The waitress returned to the kitchen, and then presented a "single order" to the grill cook (clearly in sight; I sat at the counter). I received my order about 12 minutes after the party of five. The waitress that served the party of five did not bring me my order. The cashier served me. [I asked the cashier for the order time and noted the time I received my order.] . No common courtesy was extended concerning the service delay. NO ONE spoke to me about the delay. NADA! . I sent a concern to Hoochies' via their website a couple of days later. I listed all times and observations. In the two weeks since submitting my concern, there has been no response. Nothing. No thank you for sharing your concern, no apology. NADA! Neglect has no place in any service industry. I will NOT patronize their establishment, again. [My email and phone were listed in the concern.] . Further, the amount of salt in the food overwhelmed me when eating and rendered me dizzy shortly after the meal. I caution those who are sodium sensitive to consider eating elsewhere. . I like this place. They've always been friendly and no member of my family has ever been disappointed with what they ordered. My wife and I have eaten here many times, and always leave pleased with the experience. I'm particularly fond of the fried jalapeno slices and the oyster po'boy sandwich. Everything on the menu is incredible. The ingredients are high quality, fresh, and even local (except the fish, of course). The cooks prepare the food like it's a piece of art, and it always comes out delicious. The menu is simple yet broad and reasonably priced, especially considering it's seafood away from the coast. The draft list consists of top notch crafts and local brews, and it's always being mixed up (but dollar lonestars stay the same). Hoochies atmosphere is on point, including the music. I don't know where to start. I love Hoochies as does my family but after my most recent experience I will not be returning and will be telling my family the same. I was waiting in line because the cashier didn't look ready to take my order and when I got closer I saw she was actually on her phone. When she looked up she rudely said "can I help you?" She was very short while taking my order but I didn't read into it too much. Our order took 20 minutes to come out and when the same cashier brought it to us, we asked for more ketchup and she walked off. The food was cold and my wife's shrimp was very undercooked. When the same cashier walked past I politely asked again for more ketchup that she never brought to which she replied "you already have some". My wife and I were appalled and decided to leave. There were only 3 other groups in the restaurant so there was no excuse. I asked one of the other employees what the cashiers name was and I was told "V" which to me sounds like they're trying to hide her real name. Fine. But Hoochies has officially lost several once loyal customers. Especially because the quality has declined in recent months. read more

We just finished lunch here, and I was very pleased! We all got the broiled fish of the day, which today was haddock. it was delicious, and just enough sauce to give it a little lemon caper taste, but could still enjoy the fresh fish, at least it seemed fresh! we ordered a basket of fried pickles which were addictive and just lightly battered. besides salad was good quality and fresh lettuce and hush puppies were outstanding with the ranch dressing it came with. all in all a really enjoyable lunch good quality food. Had a fantastic lunch with friends today. My wife and I enjoyed the boiled platter. It arrived fast and hot! Large portion of crab legs, shrimp and sausage with corn and potatoes. I haven't had a sausage po-boy since I moved to Texas, so I'm so glad Hoochie's has one on the menu. It was delicious! It was my first time going, and I'll definitely be back. I did have an issue with my order (it was a really, really busy night- - shit happens) but everyone was really nice, and the manager went out of his way to take care of it. I went there, alone, on a Thursday afternoon at about 2:30. The time restaurants usually have crappy food and service. This was not the case at all! I walked in, checked out the menu, and asked the man at the counter where the oysters were from. Barry, the manager, told me that the batches vary-sometimes from Louisiana, sometimes from the Texas Gulf. Good enough for me...he knew!!! He recommended a bigger plate than I was in the mood for, so I opted for the combo shrimp/catfish basket with a beer. As I'm sitting alone, enjoying the tunes and my beer, several people came in and placed to go orders or were picking up orders. My God, that man knew everyone of them by name!!! Since I'm a gumbo snob, I asked Barry if I could try the gumbo. No rice. Just the roux. It was the best I've had outside of Nate's in Addison, however, it was a slight bit thin and a smidge too spicy. I like mud gumbo:) but I would definitely order gumbo from Hoochie's. Everything is made in house. Yes, even the roux for the gumbo. Every day. The cocktail sauce had a smidge of horseradish and the tartar sauce was to die for--I know the secret ingredient, but am sworn to secrecy by Barry!!! Barry and I had a long discussion about roux and at the end of my visit, I knew he knew his stuff. On to the food. Served piping hot, both the shrimp and catfish were breaded perfectly and seasoned well. At this point, I'm starting to remember Aw Shucks on Lower Greenville....one of my favorite places in the world. The hushpuppies are cut in squares! Yep! And are filled with tiny chunks of jalapeno! OMG! I'm loving this place! I text my best friend in Dallas - "miss you! thinking of youo at Hoochies!!! Fried shrimp/catfish/blues/beer!!!" Regarding the timing of delivery of food-as with any restaurant that REALLY cooks while you wait, be patiient. It ain't Fast Food. This is not really a place for kids. It's a place where adults kind of chill out and let go. Unless your kid is exceptional, I'd leave him/her at home and truly enjoy an adult night out. If you're looking for clean seafood, with a casual, low vibe chill, easy-going, blues-like joint, go here. The music ranged from Norah Jones, BBKing, Stevie Ray, Delbert McClinton, Allman Bros. Really good food here folks. Just stumbled in here cause our Sushi joint down the street was closed and we're not disappointed on a Sunday afternoon. Had the blackened catfish and it was superb. Wife had the fried shrimp and she said it was great. Only downside of this place is lack of service. No waitstaff. But what they lack in service they make up in quality. SK p the fries for slaw. As a family we were extremely excited to eat @ Hoochies. Since moving up to this area from South Texas we've been craving some quality Cajun. 1). Menu stats Snow Crab on the menu $$22.99, NOPE - can I ask the reason they have it on the menu? 2). Pre cooked cheap Dungeness crab that hardly had any meat. 3). Sausage bottom 5 ever had @ any Restaurant 4). Extremely poor quality when you order a platter for $35. You ask questions to the cooks, they roll their eyes like you are an idiot. 5). Last recommendation by server was half price on on a few things. So we order what was recommended, get the bill and full price. You ask and instead of crediting you back, next time you come in you get a free appetizer, I ordered 4 @ half price which I paid full price, a beer at half price which was at full price. Get the drift Management. This is clearly a place for just the college kids that are drunk and think all food is good. The reason why I gave them a 2star is because one gentleman was so polite and the location and decor done perfectly. I'd find me a new staff and have Integrity behind that staff. read more

The roasted oysters are excellent, but cleanliness is a MAJOR problem. We sat beside the kitchen, and watched the manager on duty prep food, take food to tables, clear dirty tables, handle money in a food prep area, and wipe down counters and tables - without changing his gloves once. Tried this place for the first time about a week ago and was very impressed! We got a couple of pieces of cornbread to munch on while we waited for our food and they were really good. I had the fish tacos and they came with pico, guacamole, and french fries. I LOVED THEM!!! I'm not even a cabbage fan and I ate everything! The sauce on them is really good too! My husband had a shrimp poboy that he really liked too. But my FAVORITE part was the hushpuppies! I swear they batter and fry their jalapeno cornbread to make them. I hate hushpuppies generally, but these are sooooo good! I almost ordered another batch I loved them so much. We will definitely be back. read more

I wouldn't call this a Cajun place, it's a seafood restaurant that also happens to serve gumbo and calls their sandwiches Po'Boys, even though they're not. Name a Cajun dish and chances are you won't find it here. Jambalaya, red beans and rice, gator tail, boudin, andouille sausage, etouffee.... I would have settled for any of these. But they aren't on the menu, they seem to specialize in Oysters and fried shrimp/catfish. Those didn't sound particularly good, so I went with the sausage Po'Boy while everybody else in my party either got the fried catfish or shrimp. Aside from the sandwich not really being a Po'Boy, it wasn't very good. To me the sausage just tasted like regular old Eckrich smoked sausage. In fact, I would bet money that's what it was. At $10.95 it's the most expensive" Po'Boy" I've ever had, and also the worst. The three people in the party who got the fried catfish said it wasn't properly cooked. Like it was overcooked in some spots and undercooked in others. We also got an order of hushpuppies for the table. I don't know what everybody is raving about, that's just cornbread. I don't even think they fried it. It was just squares of soft, moist cornbread. Good cornbread, but not hushpuppies. All in all it was very disappointing, I wanted Cajun food and I got an Eckrich sandwich. read more

Sad to do this but after the last 3 visits it's time.... We always get to go Bc we have a little one that doesn't do great in restaurants. Husband orders oysters on a half shell, we get home, no lemon included in our entire order. I got the blackened catfish and while it was good, it was placed on top of the fries which caused them to be drenched in liquid making them unedible. The fries are always soggy so I'm not a fan anyways but this was just nasty. They didn't put any lemon or tarter sauce in my basket either. They also forgot our order of the best hush puppies so we went back, the boy argued we didn't order them, after my husband said yes you told us it would be an upcharge to add them he remembered and gave them to us. I opened them in the car and they are COLD! after eating here at least once a month we are so very sad this is no longer our go to for seafood. read more
