This was a very bad experience, not crowded at all. Service was slow! When our food arrived my pasta dish was like warm other order crab cake was good but french fries, room temperature. Sent my pasta back to heat up but returned dry and not much warmer with no garlic bread. Told service she said she would send manager over, offered desert. I prefer my food of choice to be at the temp of what is expected. I would be more understanding if they were slammed bit I see why they weren't! If they last a year I will be very surprised in less that change very fast as PEAKE season is almost here. read more

Update to previous review. Real rating would two and half stars. Obviously H&V are still having some growing pains. This time we were a party of four on a busy Saturday night the real test of a restaurant. Kitchen was overworked, some menu items were out, service was good, place was too loud to have a nice conversation. Two of our party are experienced with restaurant start-ups and here are their recommendations. 1. Problem: water was heavily chlorinated. No bottled water available. Solution: Have bottled water on the table ( or at least available) with ice as a welcoming gesture. Another sign of a good restaurant: have good quality bread and butter ( or equivalent) on table before order. Something customers would not have at home. A nice gesture. 2. More serious: kitchen was clearly overworked for a full house. Two of our orders had run out and we had to make substitutes. Owner said kitchen was not big enough to add more staff. Solution ( admittedly drastic but probably essential to survival). With help of designer or architect, expand kitchen even if it means less covers. Add more soundproofing; place was seriously loud. 3. Menu could use a little more creativity. Items were well cooked and tasty but more variety would be nice. Crab cake, the test of a bay-located restaurant, rated 8 out of ten.Tasted good but didn't look that great on the plate. A crab cake should have little pieces of crab sticking out; H&V's version looked like a fried cake. Oysters on the half shell would be a good addition. Not so much reliance on catfish ( although it was good) and more local fish such as rockfish. A block from the Bay so there's no excuse for not having fresh local fish aside from catfish. Add espresso maker. We haven't given up because despite these problems we had a nice dining experience. read more

I have visited Hook & Vine 3 times within the last month. Every visit has been a wonderful experience. The food has been delicious, the atmosphere inviting and service very good. We will continue to visit this unique restaurant. The restaurant is small so I wouldn't recommend a large group. I wouldn't recommend if you are in a hurry as the service can be slow but I think that is because the kitchen takes special attention to each dish being served and being fresh. read more

1-10 this place gets an 8 for atmosphere (the outside seating is quieter and on a nice evening...better) a 8 for service, but a 6 for food. They are almost there, and what we hear from folks in town there is some inconsistency with quality of taste. If the chef where to hone in on the key flavors this place will do well. Had a wonderful outdoor lunch at Hook and Vine today. Sat on the porch, great shade and spacing for COVID. All the staff were in masks and appreciated the precautions throughout. Food was very good, including the crab dip (that Pretzel bread is to die for!) This was a day trip for us from the DC area and it was well worth it. Just a few blocks from the ocean, we enjoyed walking on the boardwalk and window shopping. All felt very safe in masks and social distancing. Thanks for a great meal! read more

We came here for lunch, and had a glorious meal outdoors. They have a few tables in their patio, with gas lamps, and outdoor gas firepits. Staff was friendly, and they follow all the Covid-19 precautions. Their menu has a lot of options, we ordered several dishes, the shrimp and grits I had was really, really good. The grits were seasoned perfectly, and we hope to return soon. read more

They're trying awful hard to please. New owners seem to really care what patrons say. But the menu is extremely limited and keeps locals from coming back often. Given the shortage of good restaurants in town they would do well to improve their service - some of the wait staff are out to lunch, get their existing dishes perfected consistently, and change it up with some solid specials that hit the mark without a lot of effort. We really want them to succeed but some training for the chef and waitstaff and some tried and true specials that mix up the menu and with different flavors would help. read more

Tried visiting Hook and Vine last night, Friday, and the hostess told us that we could sit right away but the kitchen was so backed up that it would take at least an hour to get our food. Not a good first impression. We decided to leave, not sure when or if we will return. Update 2 weeks later. Tried this place again and was told the kitchen was backed up again. Never coming back. I'm done. I'm a local resident and good luck making it through the winter. Dear Owner - I returned on a rainy Sunday at 3pm and your kitchen was still backed up. Good luck, your going to need it. From what I can tell from other locals, people have had similar bad experiences. In the winter months, the only ones around are locals so I hope you survive but I will not be one of your customers. read more

The crabcakes are good but the go-to is the catfish and chips. This place gets three stars because the mashed potatoes I got with my crab cakes were cold and had no taste. Should have stuck with my catfish. Seriously. They can and will do better as I will give them one more shot. read more

Our server Kayla was great. Our food was okay--pricier than it should've been and needed a bit more seasoning on everything. We ordered the Kickin shrimp which was good and the cream of crab soup (definitely the best thing we ordered.) We got the Veggie pasta and the blackened catch of the day (mahi mahi) and both were bland. However we enjoyed a bottle of wine and some nice dessert. I've visited this restaurant a few times. Definitely needs work. The noise is very loud! We experienced a bridal shower at a other table. Hmmm, should have put them in a side area or bar arena. Was extremely loud. The deviled eggs were filled with too much mustard. Very bland tasting. The menu offered a great selection but the quality of the food taste was okay - not on par with the price. The second visit was good. Jumbo scallops - delicious! The third visit was a wine pairing with tasting. Very unique experience and the selections was explained by the chef, owner, and winery. We had a special menu with pricing. The wine price per bottle was listed on the menu. So we ordered a few bottles and enjoyed the experience. However when the bill came, the wine was nearly double the price. When we asked for the reason, the owner (who also knew one of our participants) explained the price is the store price only at the wine shop. No where on the menu was this listed to be the case. I specifically spoke up and said this was a false lead - that somewhere on the menu we were selecting our choices from it should have said this was not the restaurant price. The owner said she had to make money too. Hmmm, we could have walked a block away and picked up the wine at the menu price if we had known. Just gave everyone a bitter pill. Again, the noise is very loud and the food is bland. Haven't been back since and would prefer to give my business to someone who doesn't mislead people and offers flavorful meals to suit various palates. read more

This place is fairly new so it's still working out some kinks but overall I really like it. The first time we came like two months after it had opened and the service was so slow and I didn't even get my meal until everyone else in my party had finished eating. It's very sad to see such negative reviews about this place because it is FANTASTIC. I'm keeping this short and sweet, but every time I have been it has been such an incredible experience. The food is amazing - I recommend the pork chop with Brussels and potatoes. Everything I have had on the menu so far has been great. The owner, Monica, is the nicest woman ever. She always comes and talks to my family and I when we come, she remembers our names and past conversations. She's amazing. I think the Calvert area needed a place like this. If you had a bad experience - go again. Maybe they were working out the kinks of being a new restaurant who knows - but it is truly an awesome establishment. It is much better than the last place. Food does take a while to reach the table and 1-10 food was an 8 atmosphere I give a 7 host an 8. It is loud but come on it's not huge so expect it. My wife and I visited the Hook & Vine Saturday for lunch and enjoyed our meal very much. Dusty invited us to try the H&V and we are grateful to her for the recommendation. Our server, Kailen, was super - we'd love to have her as our server anytime. The service was quick with attention paid to us from all the servers. The menu is varied with surf and turf selections, as well as burgers, mac n cheese, sandwiches, and other dishes. My Jambalaya was delicious with not too much spicy heat (& I like spicy food). My wife loved her Caeser salad (just the right amount of dressing), and said the H&V is her new go-to place for salmon tacos. Her Key Lime pie was fantastic (the filling was sooo good with the custard-like texture while the bread pudding is the best I've tasted in a very long, long time. The first bite had me hooked. I made sure the Chef knew I was pleased :-) The H&V is located in a beautiful old home just a few steps from the Chesapeake Bay. The decor is rustic seashore with beautiful scenes--pictures, photos, craftmade--of the Bay along all the walls. There is a real nice front porch along the streetside for al fresco dining. The tableware is very nice blue water glasses and white glass dishes while the flatware is standard stainless steel; paper napkins round out the table set. The dining room is intimate but not elbow-rubbing close; you won't feel like the next table is part of your party. The bar area is nice and well-presented; tall tables are available when the dining room fills up. We didn't try the bar, but will the next time we visit. With the North Beach Farmers Market gaining widespread acclaim, Fridays are sure to be busy; it would be wise to call ahead for a reservation. The drive from Prince Frederick is about 20 minutes. Not bad for a non-work day. Parking was easy and just around the corner (we were greeted by a friendly female mallard duck as we crossed the street. Next time we'll bring her some duck treats :) *****Five Stars***** because first impressions count most. We'll be back, and we'll help spread the word. read more
