We found this place a few months ago. We have to come to Burnaby every so often (from the Valley) and it's usually during the week around lunch time. First time there we had a meat pizza, it was delicious. Then we were there on a Tuesday, lol found out its $3.50 Taco Tuesdays, we had to try it. Husband had the Prawn ones, he raved about them. I had beef ones which was also very tasty. That was our first time trying the tacos here, well it was so good we try to now go into Burnaby on Tuesdays so we can stop in for Tacos and a beer . Next time we were there the waitress remembered us, asked if we were having Tacos again. Husband had the Prawn ones, I had a Prawn and Beef one. I agree the Prawn is awesome, the beef one I had that time seemed like it was a hamburger patty broken up and seemed overcooked. This didn't deter us, as last Tuesday we went in again. Waitress ( I think her name is Tia got name from bill) recognized us again and said "Tacos and Beer?" Yup all Prawn tacos please; and they were delicious. Enjoyed the Back Country beer too. Seems it gets a good lunch clientele, and Tia is busy attending to them all and her service was cheerful to all from what we saw. We like the venue, parking daytime doesn't seem to be an issue. We will eventually try other menu items but can't make them for $3.50 each and not have to buy, cook and clean afterwards for a few tacos, plus it's a nice change for us to enjoy with a beer. read more

It's a great place to hang out and not be pressured for anything. They have darts and some games. They have raffles, trivia, and other contests during sports events. The food is solid pub fare. It's fresh and portions are generous. There's a good selection of craft beer on tap, and a full bar for cocktails. Went there about 3:30 on a Tuesday afternoon (today). Eight people inside; a few more outside in the patio. Two waitresses, one very experienced, the other I have not seen before. I've been going there about 30 years, frequently for 25 and not very often since, due mostly to moving farther away. Today I got the worst service I can recall at this place. On the way in, I read the specials on the chalk board and planned to order a sleeve of the beer special and the chicken burger. The experienced waitress took my beer order only. When she returned with the beer she said she would be right back to take my food order. After a wait of quite a few minutes, the other waitress came by and asked if I wanted food. I said yes and mentioned that the other gal had said she would be right back. The new gal then left for a few minutes. After speaking with the first server, the second returned to my table to take my food order. I said something about the chicken special. She said, "Chicken tenders?" When I shook my head, she said, "Chicken tacos?" Then I referred to the burger. She said that that special was available only until 4:00. I looked at my watch. Seven minutes to four. At that point, I asked her how much the beer was. She went away and returned with the bill. It had on it a sleeve but no discount for the special. Total 7.40. I gave her $10 cash and asked for $2 back. She left my table and did not come back. After waiting several minutes and watching her do a few other things, I went up to her and repeated that I had asked her to $2 back. She just said, "Oh" and gave me a tooney. On the way out, I checked the chalk board. The sleeve special was $5.50, not $6.50. So, I went back and asked the lady bartender what time the beer special was good until. She said all day. When I showed her my bill, she told me that I did not order the special. This did not help. She could have asked, but instead assumed that I was wrong. When I repeated that I had ordered the special, she said she would have to check with the server. I spotted the server who took my beer order, the experienced one, as she came in from the patio. She remembered that I had ordered the special sleeve. The bartender said the bill was for something else with a similar name. The server apologised, did some calculation, then refunded me the difference from her own money, not from the till. An honest mistake corrected without issue. Refreshing! I left, picked up take-out elsewhere and ate at home! read more

I've tried this place about five times now I really wanted to like it as I live walking distance. They have no interest in getting new customers or being welcoming to neighborhood groups even with an advanced call. Both ways same unwelcome response. They say they don't take reservations. What they mean is they don't want you to come at all and they won't prepare for you even if you give them notice. They have a patio but it's full of smokers so you can't sit out there, discovered that out with one friend in the summer. Which I thought was not allowed in the province of British Columbia anymore. Went for a bite to eat and a couple beers the other night. The server was great and the beer was good. Ordered wings as an appy and a pizza and found the food was a bit lacking. The wings had little to no sauce on them so were dry as heck. The pizza was decent but the bacon on the pizza was too sloppy for my taste and they put a lot of garnish on top which I didn't care for. Went into the washroom before heading out and it was an absolute mess. No toilet paper in one stall, a broken soap dispenser with the container on the counter and paper and water all over the place. It was like no one had checked the state of it for quite some time. One star for the server as she was good, one star for the beer because it was tasty and the third star is for food that wasn't horrible but if I had the choice it would have been a half star due to the dry wings and undercooked bacon. read more

Came here on a Sunday ( Crab legs special as my bf calls it). We came in on a super busy day and service was relatively good considering they were packed. I had gotten one of the salads which had a few modifications on it and the waitress and kitchen staff made a great effort to sub the mods for me ( 2 thumbs up). We had all shared a " half portion of nachos" which was $15 and omigosh they were huge!!!!!. ( cheese layering would of been awesome but overall very impressed). My bf had specifcally came for crab legs and he was disapointed. $2.50 for one snow crab leg which barely had any meat. It used to be $4.00 for a cluster of crab legs and also Alaskan crab legs. Don't go to this place. It's in an old mall inside its dark and dreary We should have left right when we arrived. We ordered appies the Crispy Prawns and the Sticky Garlic Ribs. The prawns were horrible!!! Supposed to be tempura batter but was some thick gluppy batter and over deep fried. When we bit into the prawns they still had the shells on them! Yuck. We complained and the waitress was not concerned or responsive. The ribs were over done as well but we did not complain. When we got the bill we were surprised that the prawns were not removed from the bill. To Management; I just want you to know about my humiliating experience the other day when I came into your pub for a beer and a bite to eat. I haven't been to the pub in a long time and decided to pop in and have a cold beer and a late lunch. I walked into the pub and sat down. A waitress came over and asked to see my Vaccine information and I informed her that "I cannot be vaccinated" and showed her my medical exemption card which has a barcode on it for her to scan. She took it away and scanned it at the bar. When she came back I asked her "were you able to scan it ok?" and she said yes. She then took my order and left to bring me my beer. She returned and dropped off my beer. At this point I thought everything was fine but a few minutes later she came back and informed me that I had to leave. No explanation was given other than they can't make any exceptions. I was completely stunned by this, I told her that my medical exemption is quite legitimate. She apologized and again told me there were no exceptions and that I had to leave right now. I wasn't even allowed to finish my beer which I had drank half of. I'm sending this email to the pub management to let them know what happened. Even Though I have a legitimate medical exemption it was totally ignored. I have never been so humiliated in my life. I thought I lived in a free and democratic country where people showed respect for one another but apparently not. read more

Very upset with this place. Yesterday my husband and I, and my parents-in-law were turned away at 6.15pm, because we had a 5 month old baby with us. A new rule as we were seated only 10 days earlier. It was very embarrassing being perp-walked out of the pub by a rude manager who claims that no children are to enter the pub after 6pm, but if you are in before 6pm you can stay until 9pm (any day of the week). Even the restaurants in downtown allow you in before 8pm. What upsets me the most is that we were I there 10 days ago at 7pm.... and no one said a thing to us, and it would have been great if there was a sign up on the entrance, save us being walked out as if we were disruptive criminals. To critique your management style, you should have seated and served your customers, politely requesting that they enter before 6pm in future if bringing children. Was more upset that it was the in-laws last night in Canada, and ruined our night. Not a great impression of Canada... Normally the food is great, music.. great, staff generally are also pleasant and a nice range of drinks. One awful experience thanks to the manager, but I lke this place and will probably give it another shot... before 6pm this time. read more

I can't give this place full stars because the one thing that can ruin a fun night out is a grumpy waitress. The food here was decent but we could tell our waitress really didn't want to be there. No friendly smile, no chatter, she put our appy order in with our main and brought everything together which was too bad because we would have liked to start with the apps first then dive into the mains while they are still warm. Waiting a long time to get our tab settled and we had to ask for a box for our leftovers right at the end of it all because she didn't ask if we wanted to take our food home :( So one lost star because our waitress didn't serve the food in the right order and one lost star because the waitress was grumpy. read more

I'd love to give this place a better review because it's close to where I live and, in general, has a variety of food and drink I like. I can't though. I was a part of a group meet-up that was about as low-committal as a large group could be in a restaurant industry sense. People were coming in and paying their own tabs, on their own time, within a couple hour frame. So at no point would any one waitress be overly burdened with the service of many people or have to be bothered with having to split checks; nor would the kitchen be overrun with a bunch of food orders as most people were just coming in for drinks. Basically this would have just been 15 extra patrons on any given night in this bar's business. The fact that we were sort of grouped together bothered the manager so much that he made it a point to not only tell us that we should have called ahead but that if we had called ahead he would have directed us to go to a different bar. 15 people. I wonder how this place stays in business. The guy acted like the place was making enough money to be able to turn 15 people away because - and this is a direct quote - "the kitchen gets messy if too many people order at once." Again, no one even wanted food. I mean, it was the oddest encounter I've ever had with a manager. For the record, the woman who organized this DID call ahead and was told they couldn't take reservations for groups, but was not directed to go to a different bar. Likely, because whomever spoke with her had a shred of business acumen. I rarely use yelp, nor do I ever feel compelled to use it to say bad things about a place. In this instance I'm mostly hoping the owner of the establishment sees this because he or she has to know what ever manager they have in place is not in the business of making money. Either the owner is unaware this manager is condescending and often directing clientele to other locations OR this inept manager is some kind of blood relative that can't be let go for whatever familial obligation. read more

Finally sold us the bottled beer but did not bother to charge us the draft cost; poor customer service to make things right. Been here around a dozen times because it is close to where I live. Having said that I haven't returned in the last few months for several reasons. 1) service is okay, the servers are generally very nice but often there's just one person working tables and it can get busy so things slow down 2)the food... when its done right can be really really good. but pretty much every time it seems they screw up someones meal badly. I've ordered to go three times, the nachos turned out well, but the beef dip came without the dip and the poutine had fries that were deep fried so long there was pretty much just a casing where a potato had once been. They used to have an awesome wing night for like $0.20 a wing but last i had checked they doubled the price (even then half the wings would be deep fried to almost inedible-ness but it wasn't a big deal since they were cheap). 3) Good for a long list of craft brews if you like that, but they don't really have good specials on just say normal pitchers of beer, its pretty pricey. I should note however that the bar itself is nice and inviting but I unless some major changes are made I don't think i'll be back. My guess is that prices have had to go up due to the lack of customers lately, my hope is that with the grocery store finally coming in next door that business will pick up again and things will get better, but for now just 2 stars read more

In the general North Burnaby area, there are three pubs I enjoy going to. Mountain Shadow, Soho's (now closed), and Hop & Vine. Of the three, Hop & Vine would be my favourite. Let me explain, in brief, why I credited it with 4-stars. - 10-cent wings on a Monday night. - Significantly larger wings/drum sizes (even during 'wings night'). - Decently priced pub-grub that won't destroy your wallet. - An ever-changing and unique beer selection. - Cozy atmosphere with communal-sized tables. - HD televisions in almost every direction. - Free pool table in the back. The service is a hit or miss. I've been here at times when service was top knotch, but contrasted by the times when my group and I were left waiting for service. Ultimately, the positives outweigh the negatives which is why I enjoy coming back here time and time again. There's a huge lot for parking and it's next to a private liquor store. Win, eh? read more

Dropped in for a beer and dinner with a coupon with my girlfriend. The food and service was great but then it got weird. I asked the bar manager if he could put the sound on for the Canucks game as the game was on 5 or 6 screens. Nope have to listen to 70, 80s music. He told me to try the Admiral. I asked another patron what he might like and the manager came over and told me "not to take poll". It was his bar and he would make the rules. He was confrontational and followed me to my table to continue telling me not to talk to anyone. I told him I could talk to anyone I liked. I'd understand if it wasn't a sports bar but 10 TVs suggests it is a Sports bar. Anyways left happy about the service and food but put off by the narrow mind of the bar manager. The Hop and Vine was a favourite old haunt when I lived in North Burnaby, and their Thursday night burger special was a great deal! Burger Biters paid a return visit after about eight years to see how the old standby faired. They had two burgers, so we opted for the server's recommendation of the Homemade (?) Bacon Cheddar Burger. While flavourful, the organic beef patty was dry and overcooked (2.75/5), and the almost stale Kaiser didn't help one bit (2.5/5) to get this one dry burger down. Toppings included a sliced dill, bacon and cheddar, both decent, and the usual suspects that included limp lettuce, bland tomato, and some nondescript sauce (3.25/5). Okay luke-warm fries (3/5) slapped on the plate all added up to an an okay burger, but at $15, not great value (3/5). All in, the Hop's HBCB scored 2.9/5 - recommended with reservations. Okay in a pinch... Other menu items may be better, but if you believe a decent burger is the true measure of any pub or modern diner, probably best to stick with snacks and appies. A great selection of well-priced local and American craft beers that include Bellingham's Aslan Brewing Batch 15 pale ale and Brooklyn's Six Points Global Warmer, both excellent! Warning: This place ripped us off & we were treated terribly. We have been coming to this pub for years, and aside from a couple unpleasant experiences, until now, overall it was a decent enough place to go for food and drinks. Though the manager Brandon has always been arrogant and unfriendly, he was easy enough to ignore. Besides the time he literally told me and my boyfriend not to kiss in the pub (but that's another story) 2 days ago when my boyfriend and I took his son to the pub for his birthday. We ordered some food, drinks and tequila shots. When we received the bill we were charged $108 for tequila! They served us Patron without us asking for it. We have ordered tequila shots on numerous occasions at this pub and we have never been served off the top shelf. I didnt notice at first and paid the bill with a $30 tip. $210 bill total. When I inquired about this, the waitress Cristina and the bartender Shawn immediately became defensive and refused to correct the bill. They offered us coupons in return and acted like we were the ones in the wrong. Not only that, the waitress charged us for 12 shots when we only had 9, which she admitted to & they still refused correct the bill. Needless to say, things got a little heated, words were exchanged and we left. We called the manager Brandon the next day to make a complaint and we were told to come into the pub to discuss. He was rude immediately and refused to listen to our side of the story and only refunded us the eqivilant of 12 of their cheaper shots (remember, we had 9) and refused to give us the $30 tip back. He basically threw the money at us and told us not to come back. Thanks Brandon. We weren't planning on coming back. You can't fire us when we already quit. We were scammed and treated like garbage. The Hop & Vine Taphouse is a nice surprise when you first find it. It is a little hidden in Burnaby so you may not have even heard of it. In the burbs it can be hard to find a good taphouse that supports a lot of craft beer. This is one of those places as they have 24 rotating taps that are almost all craft beer. They also have a pretty good bottle list that includes smaller bottles as well as bombers. For the people that like wine and spirits they seem to have a good selection there but I don't drink either so I can not speak to it personally just anecdotally. In late 2013 the taphouse redid their food menu that had grown a little tired and brought it up to a high standard. Well worth a look if you are in Burnaby and looking for a good taphouse. read more

This is a great pub tucked away in the Greystone area. One of my favorite places to go for UFC and other live events as it doesn't get quite as crowded as other pubs in Burnaby. Each day, there is a daily special for food. Food here is pretty standard for pub food. Because it is in Greystone Plaza, there is assurance that there is lots of parking. With the recent closing of the Mountain Shadow Pub closeby, I suspect this place will get busier. read more

I used to come here every Friday night, and it has become a popular place. And this is its downfall. Normally when you get a crowd like this on a Friday night the service suffer, especially during "Happy Hour". I came in at 5:50 on a Friday night, happy I made it in time to order the "Appy specials"... for 5 minutes I tried to flag down a server. Finally someone brought me water. I told him I wanted to get my order in quickly since Appy Hour was nearly over. He told me that it was over, by his watch. After to pointed out the time on my phone to the manager, I told him I was leaving, and why, and I left. So translation: During Appy hour, get there before 5:45.. because someone has turned the clock ahead in that pub UPDATE: (Feb 16 2018) It has been 7 months, since I have been to this pub. I thought I would give it another try. So I returned hoping to find a difference in attitude, but no. I arrived, this time, after happy hour and the server told me that I was too late. I accepted that and ordered appies anyhow. Within 5 minutes of arriving, the manager came over, kneeled beside the table and asked me if I was the guy that rated them a (1 star) because it really hurts his business. I told him, yes, I was. He did not apoligise, or even explain, but only to say, that then, they were "slammed" . Being familiar with to the culinary industry, I know what "Slammed means. It means they have gotten a lot of meal prep tickets and it would be awhile before my order was up. It would have been nice to then having gotten the appies late but at "Happy Hour" price, but no.. just denial of their offer, I find this manager has an attitude and he was trying to make me feel unwelcome. I found his demeanor, and aggressive style intimidating, rude and bully-like. I consider this my local pub since I live very close to here. but I will not return.
