Checked in using Yelp before we arrived. This is a great feature and allowed us to be seated well before some people that arrived before us. When we arrived, the person in front of us was told it would be a half hour wait. I was a couple minutes. Now the place where you have to wait is quite small for the amount of people that were waiting and I was not told that they would text me when a table was ready. This place is quite loud and I didn't hear a text come across. The only way I figured it out was that I seen a couple people getting taken to sears and I didn't hear any names called out. Then I decided to look at my phone and seen the text that came across a few minutes before. It just would have been nice to know that was how they were going to let us know. We were shown to our seats and it took a bit for someone to come over to our seat to get our drink order. When they finally did show up, she was great the rest of the time we were there. Very nice and attentive. We ordered the loaded crack fries to start. Amazing!!! Crack fries with onions, jalapeños, bacon, and I think a beer cheese sauce. That sauce made it outstanding. Best loaded fries I've had. Then we ordered our meal. We both opted to get the onion rings instead of fries with because we just had fries as the appetizer. Turned out to be a good call. Rings are great. Nice taste, nice batter, and cooked to the perfect crispness. I ordered the mushroom and swiss stuffed burger. A little under cooked, but not enough that I needed to complain or have it recooked. It wasn't the greatest burger I've had but it was good. My wife ordered the traditional Rueben sandwich. She liked what she ate. The decor was nice. Staff was friendly and it was surprisingly very clean considering how busy it was. We will definitely be back again. We will just try to hit it when it's a little less busy. Been here a couple more times since the first review. Yes we ordered the fries again. Still amazing. We tried the grilled cheese and did not care for the fact they had an apple slice on it. Will never get that again anywhere. Tried the pulled pork and I've had better. We stopped for a quick bite. Very impressive decor, one wall of beer cans, another of artistic tiled walls, another of beer taps and plenty of old and new beer signs. This location is just as good, if not better, than the downtown location! They have a really fun outdoor patio that's been enclosed for the last few months with a bit of a greenhouse feel, with lanterns and greenery and wooden tables (not picnic tables). The indoor decor is very bright and vibrant. The food quality is about the same as downtown - I'm not as impressed with the cosmik fries as the rest of GR seems to be, but they have other solid menu items. On our most recent visit, we opted for the pizza rolls - which were more like pizza egg rolls, very crunchy - and the grilled cheese with roasted red pepper soup. It was delicious and had sooo much cheese, and apples(yes, on the grilled cheese) which was a pleasant surprise. I took it home and melted the cheese down a bit more but it was the servers apparent go-to, and it did not disappoint! I will say the service was a bit unprofessional- many curse words from our waitress. I was also not informed about multiple up-charges for specifications until I got my bill. not a big deal, just a bit of a turn off. Overall, I'd rather go here than the downtown location. Hopcat is delicious every time I come in. Last night I came in for their happy hour which is stellar.... $3 wells, 1/2 off fries and apps, and discounted beers and cocktails. Their crack (sorry, just cant bring myself to call them cosmic) fries are deliciously salty/sweet and no.. the beer cheese sauce isn't optional. It is heavenly. I'm a big fan of their pretzel bites, loaded chicken nachos, and I used to love their Angry Bird sandwich (buffalo chicken). They'll still make it for you if you request it which I think is really cool of them! but they use a chicken thigh instead of breast now and it's not ideal. Their grilled cheese has apples and honey in it and is worth a shot if you're an adventurous grilled cheese fan! Their cocktails leave a lot to be desired. I've tried 3 of them and didn't like any, and their long island is a bit too sweet and sour. Hoping to see improvement there. Our service last night was really great by the male behind the bar (he seemed managerial in his noticing of all the little details), and the girls were just ok. One forgot to bring one of our drinks, didnt give us limes with gin and tonics, and didn't give us bar napkins. Sometimes the little things add up. I am very excited that a 2nd location opened in Grand Rapids, especially because this is 5 minutes from my house haha HopCat is always a thriving place, always bustling when i have been there. My wife and I have been to the downtown location before (for drinks only) so we thought we'd give this one a try, as they have an outdoor patio and we had our kids with us, and everyone was hungry. Was a bit confused about ordering the Crack Fries (excuse me...Cosmik Fries). They provide their signature sauce as an appetizer we ordered, but not as a side with a meal. 25 cents extra with a meal; not a huge deal, just doesn't make sense. I ordered the Nashville Hot Chicken. The Nashville Hot seasoning was just enough spice-hot, and not over board. The garlic aioli was what made the sandwich, if you ask me - really good; and enough that every bite had some...even up to the last bite. The bottom bun of the Brioche was a little tough, but didn't ruin the sandwich. My wife ordered the Killer Mac and Cheese with bacon. She loved it. I tried a bite, and agreed. Def one of the better restaurant M&Cs out there. Overall, great atmosphere and service like the downtown location. But, kinda surprised that our sandwich and M&C was $25 alone; especially for the portion sizes. They were really good, but not worth the price. This feels very much like an average chain burger joint to me. It does not have nearly as much character as the downtown HopCat. Not worth going out of your way for this place! The food is definitely above average and the burgers are great!! But other than that, there are better options in GR to get really good food. Be prepared to come out of this place feeling pretty groggy and weighted down as nothing on the menu makes you feel super great afterwards! (Lots of fried options with tons of cheese but then again what do you expect from a burger place!) The one thing they have going for them is their extensive beer menu so if you're just looking to grab a few drinks and explore some new beers then this place is great! Like the downtown HopCat location, I love both the concept and execution of this place. Obviously, there are a few differences between the two locations, with some things better at the downtown spot and some better at the Knapp's Corner one. First of all, the parking is obviously better at the Knapp's Corner locale. The other thing I really like is the fact that you can check in to the restaurant and place your name on the wait list using the Yelp app. This ended up saving us a lot of actual in-restaurant wait time. The waiting areas at both locations is small and uncomfortable, so checking in ahead of time is definitely recommended. On several occasions, I felt the food quality at Knapp's Corner to be a bit better than that at the downtown location, but the beer selection is similar if not the same. The decor is also a bit better here, although that is admittedly not as much of a factor in my decision to go to one place over another. That being said, there are a few things that seem worse than the downtown location: the wait times seem longer, the layout seems more cramped and the service does appear to be slower. Overall, this is a great addition to the area. I really enjoy the food and atmosphere as well as the convenience of location and parking. read more

HopCat has been growing quickly ever since they opened in downtown GR. They now have 17 locations across the country and this is the second location in Grand Rapids. Located off the East Beltline, this location has a parking lot which is probably a big draw for those who don't want to fight traffic and parking downtown. (i.e., me) My boyfriend and I stopped in a few weeks after they opened for brunch, which they don't serve at the downtown location. Brunch is offered here every Saturday and Sunday until 3 pm and includes a Bloody Mary bar. We got there right when they opened on Sunday and were seated in a large booth. I ordered the hangover scramble, which is scrambled eggs, bacon, red onion, pickled jalapeno, and cheese sauce all over crack fries. I'm not usually a huge fan of breakfast potatoes, but I would now like all my breakfasts to come with crack fries, please and thank you. It was wonderful and such a great treat. My boyfriend got the breakfast chimichanga, which was huge and stuffed with eggs, black beans, corn, sour cream, cheese, and chorizo. It was also delicious and way too indulgent. The rest of the menu is very similar if not identical to the downtown location with one other difference - they serve Detroit-style pizza here! This is something I've noticed is becoming more common and I'm all about it. I definitely want to try that soon. Our server was awesome - super attentive and quick with water and coffee refills. Loved this place! The outdoor seating was cozy and cute. The fried were delicious and the wings were juicy and crunch. Portions were great and they accomplished the impossible, getting me to like a dark beer!!! WOW was it ever busy here. They opened 8 weeks ago, and it is still "hoppin" for sure. Although I got on the Waitlist before we went and it said 15 minutes when we arrived, we ended up waiting almost 50 minutes. Right before our table was ready, 2 spots at the bar opened up so we sat there instead. They have a HUGE selection of beer, as you would expect, and of course they always keep the hottest beers on tap, along with having a good local selection and a small selection of their own exclusive beers. The beer prices are a huge range from reasonable to definitely not happening. The food: just as good as the original Hopcat downtown, and it actually didn't take that long to come out. Our service was decent, as there were multiple bartenders taking care of us. I got the buffalo rolls, which were technically a shareable, but I couldn't even eat the whole thing it was so filling and the portion was so big. My friend got the club wrap, with crack fries and said it was also very good. Plus side, they also had a good amount of tv's here - love that sports bar feel combined with a delicious variety of beer. They also have this huge mural on the wall, completely made out of beer bottle caps, and it was awesome and beautiful! However, the temperature wasn't a big issue because I had to microwave my "smash burger" because it was still completely pink in the center. This place is still fairly new so we knew that we were going to have to wait a bit. We went right during the dinner time rush on a Friday night. This location utilizes the Yelp wait list function and I highly encourage it. The server was absolutely stellar despite how busy this place was. I had the hot chicken dinner and he had the pizza. The pizza looked really rushed but had a good flavor. My chicken dinner was/is a potential new menu item and they give you a survey card to complete after. HopCat is conveniently located at Knapp's Corner. What used to be a failed "Fajita Republic" has been restored into an always hoppin (pun intended) restaurant and bar! I'm not a huge beer drinker, however, HopCat has a giant extensive list of always changing beers and ciders on tap. Dozens- probably closer to 100- different beers, a lot of which are local, can be found and tried here. I have found some gems I actually really enjoy. They have mastered cute names- cocktails are CatTails! And there's some really fun ones on their list. A Bloody Mary my friends rave about for a brunch/hangover fix, along with many other favorites (I like the Moscow mule!) Although the food menu is mostly glorified bar food, it's actually pretty good. I only wish there were some healthier options. The Mac & Cheese is delicious and I LOVE the crack (sorry "Cosmik") fries! They will always be crack fries in my book. I love the creamy cheese sauce that comes with them- far from nasty orange nacho cheese. They also have a patio that's dog friendly and equipped with heaters. I tend to gravitate towards the indoor space here, but it's nice know know it's available. The interior and vibe here is fun and colorful; all the while fitting the beer lovers trend. The French fry flight was a competition for September to have customers try and vote for their favorite. The funnel fries were the suprise hit for us! They are sweet and addictive with a side of chocolate sauce... though if the sauce was warm it would even further improve the combination. The shakshuka fries were what I expected to like the most, but weren't as intensely seasoned as I expected as someone who has made shakshuka at home. If those fries make the cut, I hope they make a poutine with a sunny side egg dish with those fries. The fiesta fries were good, but the sour cream dipping sauce seemed like a uninspired choice since it was just a scoop of sour cream with nothing to really compliment the fries. I am sick and tired of restaurants ruining food by over cooking it. I got a Stella Burger and specifically asked for it to be medium rare with some pink in it. However, it was completely well done. I didn't send it back because that's a good way to get a "special sauce" added to your replacement burger. I also had Stella's Lounge overcook my burger about a year ago, which suggests a systemic problem since they have the same ownership. We also had a quesadilla, which was also over cooked. I don't recall ever getting my food over cooked at the original location downtown, which reinforces the stereotype that the sequel is rarely as good as the original. That suggests the "A-Team" chefs are at the original location, not at the newer locations. That isn't surprising. It happens all the time, that's why the phrase about the sequels being not as good often rings true. The beer was superb, so I still will come back, but I will have to walk to the adjacent restaurants to eat next time. The beer is a "5," but the food is a "2," so I give it a "3." You've heard of texting while driving? Well, I think the kitchen staff at Hopcat at Knapp's Corner practice "Cooking while texting," which is why the food comes out partially cremated. They aren't paying attention to what they are doing and the burgers are all well done regardless of how they were ordered. read more
