visit recently to greenfield, it is an older new england town with an interesting main street and many interesting buildings, but, as is often the case in the more remote new england towns there are more open windows than i am sure the town would like.....BUT one great reason to go there is this restaurant, 12 years old or so, pleasant inside , but nothing fancy, a lot of interesting art work on the walls, we ate at the bar, service was very pleasant and attentive, we tried some of their speciality cocktails which were very good, for lunch we had the shrimp scallops plate and the southern fried salmon cakes, they were both great!!!! everyone was pleasant and you would probably enjoy yourself here, the bar apps for later in the day also looked very interesting.....take a trip to greenfield!!!!! read more

Pre-COVID: A wonderful bar and restaurant with great atmosphere, food, and cocktails. This is a perfect place to celebrate an occasion, or drop in for a nice meal after work. The menu is a little on the pricier side, but I feel the value of the food, cocktails, and service is absolutely worth it. This is especially true when considering all of the effort H&O puts into sourcing local ingredients. During COVID: I was so happy to be able to support H&O again after the initial shut-down! They were taking every safety precaution, and even made curbside pickup feel warm and friendly. The quality of the food hasn't suffered one bit, and I feel they still deserve 5 stars. It's kid friendly and we had great service. They also make great non-alcoholic beverages. The concept is awesome and the menu looks amazing but it wasn't well executed. We were the first ones there for lunch on a Thursday. We started with the butternut squash fritters and then I had the lamb burger, my wife had the falafel burger and our kid had the chicken and fries off the kids menu. The fritters were burnt and I could tell from the fritters, the falafel and the fries that they hadn't changed their fry oil in a while. The lamb burger was supposedly flavored with garlic and rosemary but I couldn't taste either. Overall a very underwhelming food experience. I would give it 3.5 stars but I'm going to round up until I give them another shot. read more

My girlfriend and I were in the area for yankee candle and looking to grab a nice but relaxed dinner. After searching around yelp we decided on Hope and Olive. The atmosphere of the restaurant is perfect, at first we felt under dressed but that feeling quickly disappeared. When it came down to ordering it seemed like a small plate restaurant kind of place. So we ordered two appetizers and two sandwiches to share, but the portions ended up being gigantic! We got the crab dip and mezze plate for an app. For the meals we had a lobster sandwich and the meatloaf club. The lobster was amazing, the dressing they used in it made it easily one of the best lobster sandwiches we've had. The meatloaf sandwich was really good but was lacking some flavor, this could have also been because we were sharing sandwiches and the lobster was involved. We ate here a couple of years ago. I should have written this review then, but I still want to say something now about our bad experience since most of the other reviews have been glowing. Living next door in Deerfield, we really wanted this place to be good. But it wasn't, at least not for us. My main complaint is that the place is extremely noisy. Unless you go there when it's not busy, it's almost impossible to have a quiet conversation. The restaurant is completely dominated by its bar, which is fine if you're the drinking sort but not so fine if you aren't. The noise level is amplified by the low metallic ceilings. We were also turned off by the tiny water glasses, as if to say "if you aren't going to buy our expensive drinks, to hell with you." The table was small, the tables were too close together, the food was indifferent, and so was the service. Hope & Olive has a very good reputation. But I guess that's because the ambience of the place makes it quite popular with many of the locals. read more

Typically, I am not one to write reviews, but I created a Yelp account specifically because of this restaurant experience. The best interpretation of describing my experience includes overcooked/overpriced entrees and horrendous management resolution upon receiving our food which was inedible. Expectations were set relatively high given the current reviews hence why we decided to try out this restaurant. The atmosphere was pleasant, but upon ordering 3 medium-cooked burgers we were all shocked to see these completely burnt to a crisp! Not semi-charred... But Completely charred. It's understandable these things happen especially when close to closing time, but what became the biggest surprise was how management responded. I maintained a cordial and respectful tone and this is how the situation was managed: --------- Manager: "I heard you are unhappy with your meal. Can you explain what the issue is?" Me: "Unfortunately all three of our burgers came over cooked and it's simply not edible. Manager:" Well can I send these orders back and make a new entrees for you? " Me:" We appreciate that but given the fact everyone has their meal and your closing soon, it's best we dont" Manager: "Well, I've decided we will provide a complimentary dessert" Me: "Thank you but that won't be necessary" Manager: "What do you want?! (tone much more irritated and angry)" Me: "Honestly, We would really appreciate a credit if you don't mind. Especially since all 3 were burnt. Manager: (Slams a chair) " Whatever, I'll credit your bill... " A simple apology and quick resolution would have sufficed, but instead made spectacle of the situation, embarrassed herself and embarrassed me in the process. It was very unprofessional and I was floored by her lack of interpersonal skills and management experience. I assure you... I'm not one of those people who love to nitpick. Hope and Olive was where I chose to have my birthday dinner... One of my favorite restaurants in Western Mass! The only negative about Hope & Olive is that it gets so packed on the weekends, sometimes there is up to an hour wait, and the restaurant itself gets really warm. We decided to go a few blocks and have a drink at the Wheelhouse Bar instead of waiting inside the crowded restaurant. I was so happy to see they had my favorite brussels sprouts appetizer on the menu. We also got the brie and artichoke dip, both delicious as well. My friends split the *special* vegetarian pumpkin lasagna. I had the cheesy blt & a $9, and my fiance had the tempeh ruben $9.5. AMAZING, everything was just perfect, especially since the earl grey martini was still on the menu! It is possible to level some criticism at this place, but it is really such a gem for Greenfield and for the Pioneer Valley in general that I won't stoop to that. I'm really glad these guys are there. The menu is a great gastro-pub setup, with bar snacks for a couple bucks, sandwiches in the $10 range, and a list of fancier $20 entrees. Something for everyone. And of course great drinks to wash it down with. I haven't delved into their cocktail menu yet, but I am hoping there are some artful mixologists behind the bar. H&O, please don't dissapoint me, you're all I've got! UPDATE: On the cocktails, I can't say I know the bartenders well yet, but if the "cukesake" (Hendrick's gin, muddled cucumber, lemon juice, sake) I had tonight was any indication, the mixed drinks are excellent. When they start making their own bitters I'll up 'em to 5 stars. Also, check out the bar menu on the chalkboard when you walk in. It's not on the printed menu, but tends to offer some awesome cheap small plates - tonight, the grilled corn with chile butter and lime (only $2.50) was excellent, and as was the heirloom tomato salad ($5.50). Some of our dishes could have been a bit better (our pork chop special was a mess on the plate and there were just two many flavors to keep track of and the cucumber soup was more like a watery tzatizki), but Hope and Olive has so much going for it I am sure we had a bit of an off ordering night. Also have to mention that our waiter pulled an amazing move - no one else wanted dessert but me at a 5 person table. I admit I might have *jokingly* pouted about. This past weekend we had the pleasure of dining at Hope & Olive for our anniversary. We had dinner here on a Friday which was packed, but we called ahead and placed ourselves on their wait list. The host at the restaurant was very polite, and since we had to wait a few minutes for our table, we sat in their waiting lounge. We bought a drink and enjoyed talking for a bit until we were brought to our table. Our waitress was nice, but a bit absent at times. She was split between our table and a large group, so we didn't see her often. The food overall was great. Their bread and pesto oil was delicious, as were the seafood pasta meals we purchased. In the end we really enjoyed our time at this restaurant. The atmosphere itself was warm and welcoming, the food was great, and it was a great space to celebrate our anniversary. read more

This place was incredible! The service from the moment we walked in the door were top notch. The decor was cozy and artsy. There wasn't a table open but we were taken to a lovely seating area to wait where a waiter came over right away to see if we'd like a drink while we wait. We didn't have long to wait before being seated at the bar. The bartender immediately came over to greet us and gave meal recommendations. Eggplant enchiladas and a burger with the works. Hope and Olive has a good atmosphere and a very unique menu. Eight of us went recently for a birthday. We started with apps. The scallops and oysters only had four each, but perhaps that's to be expected now with the price of seafood. We also had a baked pear with crumbled blue cheese. They all tasted good. I had the brined pork chops and they were nothing special, but the side dishes it came with were wonderful. Two people had the lamb burger with goat cheese and that was really good. Lots of fries came with it and they too were awesome. The Greystone Merlot was delicious. I've already asked my local liquor store to order me some. The flourless cake was good but the creme brûlée was awful. Not sure what the flavor was. Some thought ginger, some thought lime. Prices were reasonable. We will definitely go back. read more

My family and I dropped by Hope and Olive for a quick dinner last Friday evening. I didn't know what expect from a small town like Greenfield, and I'm so glad I kept an open mind because this place is seriously so good. We dropped by 7:45 pm; Hope and Olive was packed full so we had about a 20 minute wait. There's a little seating area with cook books, newspapers, and other reading materials to pass the time. I took a peek at the drink menu and there was a wide selection and yummy looking cocktails (looking back, I probably should have ordered something)! When we were seated, we were given a bread basket with a fantastic herb infused oil. For apps, we ordered the Greek salad and the beef short ribs. Greek salad was a huge hit- absolutely loved the beets and the falafel. The beef short ribs were even better. I was kind of hesitant to try the mustard sauce as I'm not a huge fan of mustard but it paired nicely together with the meat. For the entrees, we had the cubano sandwich and the two specials for the night: bbq brisket, and the cod (over a bed of pasta with some ricotta). I would hands down order the cod again. It was cooked to perfection and the ricotta was a very nice touch. The bbq brisket was a bit of a disappointment, but the sides of sweet potato fries, cole slaw, and collard greens were done very well. The service here is superb. We were well taken care of- our waiter was super professional and kind. He checked in several times throughout the night, answered our questions, and made sure out water glasses were never empty. The restaurant can get quite loud (we had a very loud group sitting across from us that made talking amongst ourselves difficult), but overall the ambiance is cozy and laid back. There is a parking lot right across the street which makes life a whole lot easier, too! 5 stars all around!! Well done, and thank you Hope and Olive for a great dinner experience. Went to Greenfield for our annual family summer vacation as we heard it was a good spot in Massachusetts. Food was great, but I feel as though my wife can make a better pasta using ready-made sauce. Apart from that, the kids loved their meals. Tiramisu was good, but again, my wife makes better. Actually, it seems as if this is more of a my-wife-is-a-better-chef-than-anyone issue rather than a Hope and Olive issue. Heard someone refer to one of the workers as Maxfield. Took off a point for that, as it is a silly name AND the name of the guy my wife cheated on me with (sexually) years ago. Great stuff otherwise. read more

I've been coming to Hope and Olive for more than a decade, for as long as they've been in Greenfield (and before, when they were Bottle of Bread in Shelburne Falls), and they are one of the most consistently great restaurants I know. Good food with lots of inspired gluten-free dishes on the often-changing menu. The atmosphere is relaxed but lively; the service warm. The wine and beer list is terrific, as are the signature cocktails. We feel lucky to call this our "local." read more

Had lunch on 4/11 and was so disappointed. Every time I have been there in the past, the food and service has been stellar. The Butternut Squash Fritters were served burnt. I could not eat them so the server took the price off the total. The Waldorf Salad had wilted greens, few walnuts, apples and very little dressing. I have had this several times in the past and it has been wonderful. The service was slow and it seemed that the right hand did not know what the left was doing. This place was a recommendation from friends in Leominster. We decided to stop there for dinner on our way up to Vermont on a Friday night. We had a tough time deciding on a starter as they all looked wonderful but our server suggested the fried Brussels sprouts as a customer favorite. They were a nice heaping portion and they definitely didn't disappoint. My partner even suggested that I try to replicate this dish at home but I doubt that I am up to the challenge. For our entree I had the lamb burger which came with hand cut fries and he had the Meatloaf. I have never had a lamb burger this good! It was truly exceptional with a lovely Greek sauce and feta cheese. I also commented to my partner that I don't remember having had fries this good in a long time. I gave him half of them. His Italian meatloaf was delicious especially with a touch of blackened flavoring. He also loved the accompanying mashed potatoes and vegetables. We would both come back and have these same dishes or try something else. It all looked so good. Hope and Olive is definitely a find and we plan to stop here on the way to our Vermont weekend house many more times. The only minor disappointment was the skimpiness of the bread. My go to place for fancy cocktails and ambience. They have plenty of vegetarian options, but vegan is more difficult. They clearly mark gluten-free options on their menu, but not vegan. The wait staff and bartenders are knowledgeable about vegan options, but I wish I didn't have to ask! They always have some sort of tofu entree, but if you're there and you're vegan, I recommend the falafel burger. I get it with extra tahini sauce! Delicious! Their food is so creative, I hope they'll have more vegan options (that aren't deep fried) as time goes on so I can eat there more often! read more

What a thoroughly pleasant experience! I arrived road weary last night, Fri. in the height of their busy period without a reservation asking to wait for a table outside for ONE! So, most restaurants wouldn't have the bandwidth to even acknowledge me, let alone treat me with such kindness and consideration! We met family that live in Vermont at this restaurant. Definitely get a reservation. We are early around 6pm since it was a work night. We got there early so started with appetizers. Definitely get the roasted Brussels sprouts. They are broiled and flash fried for extra crispness. You want to share this because it's a little greasy since its fried. The chicken thighs in Sriracha was not to my liking as it was more sweet than spicy. I would pass on the kielbasa and pirogi too. Others at the table ordered the burger, butternut squash fritters, fried chicken, and pork chop. They seemed to enjoy the meal. The homemade vanilla ice cream was great and the portion was huge so it was shared. Others shared the lemon creme brûlée and enjoyed it. Walked in with my daughter, we had come from fishing and still decided to come here because it said casual. The best place is adorable and we felt embarrassed. Mentioned to the host sorry for our appearance...she was incredible so sweet and welcoming wish I had her name. The food was excellent.
