Took my boyfriend here for his birthday. The atmosphere is adorable, right next to the bay and nautical-themed. Past all of the quirky decorations, the main point of the restaurant is the food. Ordered myself the Filet Mignon, and it was delicious. My boyfriend ordered the ribs with the macaroni and cheese. He took a few bites and got full after eating one rack, but man, you get what you pay for. We were both more accustomed to ribs with mostly bone, but Horatio's, the meat was superbly full on the bones. All and all, we enjoyed it. Will return again sometime! read more

I received a gift card as they promised. It took me an entire year to return and it was well worth it. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to go during the dinner crowd. I went during lunch and as I said in my previous review the food and wait staff are wonderful. The issue was the cleanliness. I must say there was much improvement. The waiter did catch me eyeing my fork and he came right over and gave me another one. The view was beautiful, which I didn't get to see at dinner. I was brought here for my 26th birthday for the first time. Our waitress was named Katie and her service was great. She was patient and courteous, something you don't find quite often these days. As a Bay Area native I was extremely surprised I never dined here prior to this night. We started off with the drinks. I had a pink lemonade (alcoholic beverage) which was really good. For appetizers we each got the Dungeness Crab and Artichoke dip. I never really cared for artichokes but after this dinner I have a new favorite. For my entrees I had the Surf and Turf. Seared New York Peppercorn Steak with Main Lobster tail. Words cant describe how extradorinaiy the entrees were. You just have to try it to see what I mean. Our waitress even kept me updated with the score of the patriots/steelers game. Will definitely be back . Highly recommend to others. After deciding I would give this place another go but for lunch instead of dinner I'm a changed man. I came with my girlfriend and sat near the window since it's open seating during lunch (not too busy). Our waiter Eric was a jovial, knowledgeable guy who was very attentive to everything and was a great example of what a great waiter should be. The free appetizer garlic bread was very tasty and fresh. I had a penne lunch combo with chowder. Penne was a bit salty but still tasty. Chowder was pretty good. Girlfriend had the recommended steelhead entree and it was very delicious. Raw salad wasn't to either of our liking but that's just personal taste. We had key lime pie for dessert which was also very tasty. All in all, I'm very impressed by lunch service as compared to my previous dinner review. Ok so last time we came here was in '09, read my review below. Ugh why did I come back? well I thought 3 years had gone by, the place must have gotten better....right?....um no. Brought my mom in for a nice lunch. She had never been here and I thought it would be a nice treat for her. We arrived right at around 11:45am and were told by the hostess that we needed to wait to be seated because the kitchen had a meeting. After waiting for about 15 minutes we were seated. Our server Marlena came and told us all about their specials and asked for our drink orders. We ordered our drinks and mentioned that I had an email for a free spicy crab dip, I also asked if we could have some bread brought out. So far the service was ok. After our drinks were brought out to our table and our appetizer was out we inquired about our bread, we were told they were still making it and it would be a while. After 10 min or so cold bread was brought out. I thought they were making it? wouldn't it then be hot? We ordered our food and it took forever to come out. Our server Marlena never came to check on us...the manager had to pick up our appetizer plates off our table. When Marlena finally brought our food out it was cold too. I hate cold food. I asked my mom if she wanted to flag any server to see if they could warm up our plate and she said we were pressed for time and needed to go soon, so we sorta ate. I ordered the crab sirloin sliders and substituted the fries for their bacon cheesey grits...the grits tasted like they had been refrigerated for many days and there was nothing cheesey about them, maybe it's because they were very cold?. My mom ordered their special of the day, some fish with prawns, she said it was ok. We flagged down Marlena and asked for more bread and another margarita for my mom. She took forever and brought out more bread, and forgot my mom's margarita. I inquired about it and she said they were so busy the manager had to step in and help make drinks at the bar. Then she went to get my mom's margarita and plopped it at our table. When we randomly saw her she would never make eye contact , you can tell she just hates her job. We waited for our check for I kid you not over 30 minutes. Marlena dissapeared! She was nowhere to be seen. We flagged down another server from another part of the restaurant and asked for our check, I didn't catch her name, but she was very nice and I wish she would have been our server. I then asked her if it was normal that there was such a long wait for everything? and she assured us that it was not normal. I assume she must have told Marlena something because then Marlena came while I had my pen in hand and was thinking how much of a tip should I really leave her since her service sucked. She came and apologized for the long wait, she said she had been very busy and asked if we wanted a creme brulee to compensate for the bad service we got. Our whole lunch was ruined, some dessert isn't going to make it all better, besides we were pressed for time so we declined. She fake apologized again and sent us on our way. I looked for the manager, but I couldn't find him either, since we needed to go, we just left. We are very very dissapointed in the terrible service received from Marlena. Horatio's if you want to have customers come back to your establishment, you really need to hire people that at least pretend to like their job, or offer some sort of incentives to them like having server of the month? so that they could try a little harder to provide good service to patrons. read more

My project group had the holiday luncheon here at Horatio's and at first, I wondered, where the heck is this place in San Leandro. It only occurred to me that there was such thing as a Marina in the area when I was driving further and further from the freeway west into the glaring sun. And when you walk in its like walking into a ship. With harpoons on the ceilings, large paddles, and other interesting decorations. The place is huge and the view on a nice sunny afternoon with the light splashing on the water is amazing. Definitely sets the mood for a nice meal. Since the bosses were treating, there was a prefixed menu. And most of it came out great: -Fried Calamari - can't go wrong and good as anything -Crab dip - the bread was nicely buttered so it added to the flavor goodness -Lobster Bisque - the only disappointment because the flavor was alright and the temperature was a little cooler than I would have liked -Grilled Mahi Mahi over vegetables - very juicy and tender over a nice fresh bed of vegetables. I was surprised it wasn't dried out at all. -Burnt Cream - finished off with a creme brulee which was the perfect size and flavor Always a pleasure finding random gems in the least expected places! read more

A buddy of mine told me that Horatio's is a sister restaurant of Skates on the Bay in Berkeley. I had the check it out since I am closer to the San Leandro than Berkeley. Menu and hours are quite similar, mixed drinks and draft beers are $4-5. My coworkers and I came here for happy hour for my farewell party. The staff is really sweet. I liked that they have outside seating so we can look across the marina. Parking is spacious, you can even take a walk after dinner. (Especially in this beautiful weather). Perfect views, excellent service, great happy hour, and delicious food....what's not to like. I enjoyed the local beer selection quite a bit, but I was disappointed by the wine (and the prices of the lackluster wine). That being said, the pea salad, yes I said pea salad, was phenomenal. I eat a lot of food in a lot of places, and that was a new salad for me. It's fresh, peppery, a little creamy, and with a touch of bacon: yes, please! The prime rib was a winner along with the mahi dish. Oddly enough, the cauliflower fritters stole the show under the fish. Also, a tip on the prime rib: order a size below what you want. We ordered the 12oz and it was easily 14-16oz (a stunningly large slab of meat). The comp bread is awesome and the crab and artichoke app is extremely rich, but worth it. Not quite a five-star due to the wine and it being a little overpriced, but very much worth a visit if you're in the area. read more

Nothing bad to say about this place! Servers & staff are always very attentive. Food is delicious & cooked to perfection. This is the best spot for happy hours or after work get togethers. I've been here a few times. The last time was September 13, 2008 - my birthday! My boyfriend made reservations to take me there. We waited about 15 minutes even though we had reservations. I would recommend getting to the restaurant early on a weekend night because it gives you a better chance of getting a window seat. The view is beautiful and very romantic. Great ambiance for a date. I don't remember the meal, but I sure do remember the appetizer - crab and artichoke dip. Yummo!!! Definitely recommend it! When we were seated, I thought "hmmm, waitstaff more upscale. No more 'grog and wench' outfits. Then, when looking at the menu I noticed a familiar format, and familiar appetizers....my eyes widened and words leaped off the page (insert soundtrack from favorite horror movie here, moment of discovery here) ....Maytag blue dressing...chop house...applewood... I was kinda disappointed here. And i really really wanted to like this place. Regarding the service, i give this place five stars. Our waiter was super informative and attentive. And they aren't afraid to joke around with you, which you get in other snooty restaurants. The food however, i wasn't a huge fan of. I got the seared sesame tuna. It was okay, i just wish is was better seasoned. My parents got the Mahi stuffed crab which they didn't like. It was surprisingly dry and lacked in flavor. I have eaten here many times. Usually out of convenience and not out of preference. This place is okay. It overlooks the water and has decent food. Their crab dip and or crab sandwiches I have to say are phenomenal. As for everything else I have to say it's "just ok". I had dinner hear a few nights ago and had their seafood grits dish. And it was salty and the seafood tasted as if it was prepared and it was sitting out for awhile. I think the dish would have tasted good if it were freshly cooked. However, I think this was a busy night and they may have either let the plate sit out for awhile before serving it to me or it was premade and stale. read more

Living in San Leandro, you must temper your reviews a bit as our restaurant selection is, to put it nicely, limited. Four stars, for instance, should mean "I was able to swallow!" Since my first review, I've become a quasi-regular here. Not because the food is amazing, but because it is one of San Leandro's two nice-ish restaurants and I do love the atmosphere and service. They also make a mean mojito. Points for those things. Now the food... from a pescatarian's perspective, they actually have a lot of choices on the menu, and usually more than one option in the specials as well. They also do wonderful things with potatoes and the side dishes in general. Points. My gripe with the food, however, is that it is greasy. (Though, I suppose at this price point the word would be "rich." The food is rich. Very very rich.) I don't know why all of their fish dishes are so laden with oil, but I haven't been able to finish my last several meals because I swear I could hear my arteries beg mercy. Sticking with four stars, because I still love everything else. But please, Horatio's, consider cutting back on the oil. read more

You can't go wrong with anything on there menu, we've tried everything, and everything is delish, I promise you. Just came from happy hour at horatios to celebrate a friends birthday and was very satisfied. Ordered the artichoke dip, oysters, sweet potato fries, buffalo wings and calamari. All on the happy hour menu so they were half off which is a pretty good deal considering the quality of the food. The menu is consisted mostly of seafood. They were nice enough to give my friend a small creme brûlée with was very very good. Would come back anytime for the happy hour. read more

In all fairness, we only stopped in for lunch, but... I had the worst bowl of clam chowder in my life, heavy on the salt, light on the clams, and maybe a 1/2 inch of chowder in a soup plate, topped with bread crumbs. Basically a scant cup of soup in a large bowl. It reminded me of those old jokes about resorts in the Catskills: The food is terrible... and the portions are so small! (If you want decent chowder in San Leandro, you can do much better at Elio's on Fridays or Paradiso any day.) My wife's open face crab sandwich was a soggy grilled American cheese sandwich with a minimal amount of crab meat and a hint of vegetables: greasy and unpleasant. "Meh" is too kind. The whole place could use a good cleaning, and the silverware needed another run through the dishwasher. read more

This used to be one of my favorite "fancy" restaurants that we went to for special occasions. My favorite item was the Maytag Blue Cheese salad. They recently decided to make changes to their menu and they either got rid of a lot of their items or reworked them and gave them a new name. Either way the best salad in the bay area is now gone. On top of getting rid of some of their customer preferred favorite dishes they've also gone down a notch for poor customer service. We've been going here for many, many years and we went there again last night to celebrate my birthday. We called a week in advance and made reservations (which you should always make reservations) and yet for some reason they seated us in the bar. It was loud and uncomfortable. When the bartender made blended drinks it was impossible to hear what anyone was saying. There was also a screaming baby in there so that didn't help. Also, because of where we were sitting, every time a waiter walked by with a tray of food I had to duck to make sure i didn't get hit. If we ever go again we will just have to be clear that we don't want to be seated in the bar but after all of these years I've never had to say that before so it's a shame that this place has made so many "bad" changes. Hopefully management will get a clue and realize they blew it. 2/21/11 - I just checked their website and I'm happy to say that they brought back the Maytag Blue Cheese salad! read more

This place really is scraping the barrel. The plus points are that the portions are gargantuan (although I regard that as basically a negative). And the view can be nice. But the service is soul-less, the food is deeply uninteresting (the menu is sort of like that at Applebees) and the quality of the food is very poor. Low quality ingredients seem to be used throughout and the kitchen is not run as precisely as that at an Applebees. Finally, it's very expensive. When there are countless good restaurants in Oakland with much lower prices, I cannot imagine why anyone with a car would want to come here. And if you don't have a car you can't get here. read more

Wow! We could not have asked for a better experience. Danica took care of our table and what a pleasure she was. We were celebrating our 7 year wedding anniversary and she acknowledged it right away. The menu had just changed 2 days prior and my husband had the jerk salmon and I the twice baked chicken. The portions are very filling and presentation was amazing. So this would have been a 4 star review but the service was just so bad when we went with a large party that I took one off. I hosted a 11 person brunch here for a friends birthday on the 29th of December here. The restuarant itself was decently busy, but not overwhelmingly so. I liked the decor-- you can never go wrong with pictures of Lord Nelson. The service was just really lacking and slow. Our main server was clearly unable to direct the people she had roped into helping her, and getting refills on drinks was a serious chore. Several people were missing appetizers or starters. When we paid the check-- which we did not split, it took her 20 minutes to come back with the credit card. And of course the added on 18% gratuity. Overall, I would go back with a smaller party to see if it was just a stressed out day for the waitress or if it really is a place with bad service. Overall the food was good enough, was standard uninspired american seafood. But the portions were decent sized, it wasn't too terribly pricey, and there were good cocktail options on the menu. And again, Lord Nelson don't forget him. He rocks. read more

I used to LOVE Horatios/Skates/Kincades.....NO MORE! They are all owned obviously by the same idiots. Their menu used to be delicious, hot crab dip, pea salad and dishes which catered to the normal diner. Well...........that was the old days. We dined at Horatios recently and Skates just this past Saturday. To say it was a disappointment would be an understatement. The new management, or whoever is deciding on the menu must be smoking something. The "small" plates cost what a regular plate used cost. All you get, is the item itself. For example I ordered the "small plate" prime rib for $19, and it came with nothing..........no potatoes, nothing. Gimme a break! At Horatios I had "halibut cheeks", I was laughing.....cheeks, you're kidding. It was dry and stringy. Even the bread has changed. Who the hell had the idea had the "fried chicken and waffles" should be on the menu. Please spare me the food channel experimentation. What used to be terrific places to eat, are now A JOKE. I have no problem telling management this. The service is still fine, no problem there, but the food is seriously flawed. Long time diners WILL NOT be returning. read more

I was a little hesitant to come back here only because the time before we had very bad service. We were ignored by our server and never received any bread, and it took what seemed like forever to get our meal. Luckily, this was not the case this last time I dined here. On the contrary, our server, Victor was highly attentive and extremely informative about the menu. He was personable and friendly. I ordered the salmon and halibut duo which was fantastic and for dessert I had the chocolate indulgence cake. It was also delicious. My husband had the Washington Dungeness Crab Cake and a side of silky potatoes with truffle. He was not disappointed. We ate every bite of our dinner. Horatio's, you have been redeemed! We have been going to this spot for a few years now. It is safe to say it is one of our favorite places. The food is always amazing, the room is great and the view and surroundings of the marina are quite special. We have had so many meals here and enjoyed the consistent quality and good service over time. I love the seafood etouffee, the prime rib, the crab dip, the scallops, tiger prawns and so many others. While no dining experience is "perfect" and all restaurants make mistakes, & Horatio's is no exception, I can tell you we have never had a bad experience here. Anything negative that has ever happened has been addressed to a level that allows the rest of the experience shine through. The food was absolutely splendid. We took my father there for fathers day. Made reservations on yelp, and went in and was seated right away. My dad wanted to eat great steak, so I googled great steak places in the East Bay, Horatio's pulled up as number 1. So when we got there, they had a special fathers day menu, and the thing that was closest to steak was the prime rib. Unfortunately, we did not want that, so I asked the waitress if they did, and she kindly said she would check with the kitchen. She comes back and lets us know that they had the mignon, so we ordered that. She also recommended other starters that were not on the menu--coconut shrimp. We ordered the fresh garlic salmon mixed greens, a 10oz filet mignon, and the coconut shrimp for lunch. The food was exquisite, the steak so well cooked, and the shrimp tasty. All the food was fresh and tasty!! We ordered the key lime pie for dessert, my oh my--delicious. The service was really good as well! I loved our experience here. 5 stars. Steak, seafood, and pasta in a ship-like setting with a view of the harbor. I liked the ambiance with the wood, lanterns, and candle chandeliers. It reminded me of the decor at a restaurant in Portland, Maine. Prime rib ~ Pretty standard with a nice balance of lean and marbled meat. Pan Seared Shellfish Fettucini ~ The salmon cream sauce was deliciously rich and velvety. The shrimp and scallops were nicely cooked. I polished it off, including the thick slice of buttered garlic bread it came with. Grilled Teriyaki Tenderloins ~ This appetizer had a cute presentation, but I didn't care for the texture which was tough on the outside and chewy on the inside. I almost wish it were cooked as one piece and then sliced so there was more of that medium rare center. My grandma liked it though. Wild Mushroom Ravioli w/ Slow Roasted Beef ~ Really good according to my dad. Service was friendly. The food came out very slowly. However we did get a shareable plate of buttered focaccia bread to hold us over until our entrees arrived. I liked the ambiance the best out of my experience here. It was comfortable and classy without feeling pretentious. The decor and view was nice. read more
