I have been away far too long. My husband and I came here for takeout dining. We had some extra cash on hand, so we decided to splurge. The takeout menu is limited to a few appetizers, homemade New England clam chowder soup, salads (starter or entree), sandwiches, six different entrees, and two types of desserts. Our takeouts were prime rib and grilled salmon. Both entrees were delish. Prime rib was well-seasoned, tender, medium rare with au jus. Salmon grilled to perfection. The fingerling potatoes and roasted vegetables medley were on point. The employee who waited on us was friendly, personable and helpful. The wait time was more than the twenty minutes that he stated. I don't do drama when the wait time is longer than anticipated. Life's too short to whine and snivel. No whining allowed, but wining and dining is good. I should've ordered a glass of wine while waiting. There is a 5% surcharge included on takeout orders. Horatio's is not inexpensive, but is so worth it. We recently had a birthday dinner for my sister at this restaurant, and we had a good meal. Being located next to the old San Leandro Marina makes the setting unique to the area. However, Horatio's is a good restaurant with "great restaurant" prices. All items in the appetizer sample were very tasty, especially the flavorful dip and teriyaki beef... but $36 of tasty? Not really. All the dishes my family tried that day were very good. But all were lacking an elevated preparation and presentation that would justify the price. The Almond Crusted Scallops my mother ordered were probably the best. Very flavorful, lightly crispy on the outside and perfect texture inside. My Blackened Mahi Mahi was good but not memorable, same goes for my husband's Seafood Trio. We had great service from an attentive waitress who never let me run out of my Arnold Palmer. The experience was over all very positive and fun, and I know that it is hard to make a restaurant work without higher prices these days. And I feel good helping out venerable establishments like this. But maybe just a little more finesse with the dishes would make the prices more justified. read more

I got the opportunity to visit Horatio's for the first time on a Sunday evening. We'd made reservations prior and the table was ready within minutes of our arrival. Here's what I ordered: * Spicy Seared Teriyaki Beef Tidbits ($17): the tidbits I received weren't spicy but the sushi rice was a nice touch to this dish! It was good - not amazing, not bad, but good! * Filet Mignon, 9 oz. ($48): I was pleasantly surprised by the flavor of this cut! Considering I ordered a steak at a seafood establishment, I was expecting much worse. The fries were not very good but the steak definitely made up for it :) While this meal won't change your life, you won't leave hungry or disappointed-- and I think that's what's most important! read more

I have visited this place over 30 times in the past few years. The warm bri cheese appetizer with a macadamia crust is my favorite, absolute favorite starter. For entrée the grilled Dejon chicken is another favorite no one makes it as good as this place. Of course don't hesitate to not try all the other great dishes but if you want a nice seafood lunch the seafood Louie salad is also super excellent. Happy hour is always or has always been a fun place to visit and the blueberry crush cocktail yummy. For dessert crème brûlée but what has always been a seasonal favorite is the berry cobbler. Last but at least there was one seafood that I had about six years ago until this day have not seen that again but I would definitely go miles to find it again which was the halibut cheeks. Weird that we've never tried Horatio's before, having lived and eaten in the Hayward area for two decades. Our Thanksgiving Day plans were thwarted, and I remember my friend raving about their Thanksgiving dining. I was able to snag a reservation, and was looking forward to it. Thought I know that sometimes holiday restaurant dining can be chaotic, service-wise, this was not the case. It was not overcrowded nor understaffed. Our server Emily was genuinely delightful, as was the host who seated us. Gratitude to all of you for working on this holiday. While we didn't get the holiday meal option, all our meals were delicious. Mr. M and I both got the scallops, and the young Ms got salmon, lobster bisque, and salad. We loved the scallops, and young M liked the salmon so much, she asked for another to go portion. We are Landry members, from a visit to Kincaids a month or two ago, so I think we'll be coming back for the good food, great service, and rewards points. read more

The big question everyone asks (myself and others I heard) was why the harbor is empty and the server seemed frustrated they were asked this hundreds of times a day. The story is the person who owns the marina slip went bankrupt a few months ago whilst trying to do something with it. They have a $35 cocktail for two that is almost entirely an ice cube, leaving little alcohol at all. You definitely want to avoid that. The food's good, but expensive. The swordfish was excellent. but expensive. The view is good and the restaurant is a polar opposite of its neighbor El Torito. It's clean, has service and good food without having to wait a hour. The outdoor seating area is enclosed and looks like a fun experience but wasn't open. Given the view and atmosphere, this is a good spot for dates, but the food and drinks are expensive and the portions weren't great. Anyway, everyone wants to know why there's no boats in a perfectly good marina and that's why. The servers are sick of being asked and so there you go. read more

Loved our dinner last night. Chad was a fabulous waiter which makes all the difference. Food was excellent too even better than I remembered. Read on Yelp that service was slow so we ordered everything at once and it worked out great. Started off with a Manhattan which, although they didn't have our Bulleit Rye, was very smooth. The Brie appetizer was phenomenal. My daughter's favorite and one of the best she ever had. The clam chowder was really good and the entrees even better. Loved my chicken Dijon and the fish and chips were done perfectly. Mac and cheese and seafood fettuccine were also hits. Only miss was they added desserts to our bill which was a mistake but they graciously fixed it so hopeful it won't be a problem when I get my credit card bill. We were at Horatio's for Mother's day, Sunday May 12th, so disappointed! We've been there multiple time to celebrate over the years. The restaurant looked dirty, floors were dirty, tables, and so on. Later on when a family member went to the restroom, they mention that toilet paper was on the floor and the room was very dirty. Our food did not take too long however, the flavors are just not there, we were extremely disappointment. My filet mignon was cooked well but I asked for "medium'. The server was no where to be found but we were able to find the Manager. The Manager replaced the check with a new one, cooked correctly. However, everyone was done eating. Our desserts never came, so we asked them to box them, can you imagine! Then when it came time to pay, we waited 10 minutes for the check, we were ready within 5 minutes for the checks to be accepted. 20 minutes passed and the checks weren't taken, I got up and told the Hostess and another server. 10 minutes later, the server came and took the checks, then another 10 minutes, he came with our desserts! I wonder if this Horatio's has a new Manager, the service was horrible. The Manger never volunteered to adjust our bill or even offer a gift certificate. It can be a hit or miss at Horatio's. We often frequent here. The food is often good but sometimes can be room temperature when it arrives. There are occasions when we've sat outside that the waiter/waitress forgets there's folks outside and doesn't bring the menu until reminded and they forget to come by with more water or requested items and even the check. Many times we and other tables had to go in and tell them. Pricing is average for a restaurant like Horatio's. The happy hour prices are pretty good, especially for the food you get which is normally much more expensive. The decor is a bit dated however that's also what makes it unique and you get to look out at the marina. I wish the area was more developed because it truly is beautiful and Horatio's could be a destination restaurant. read more

For the last few Valentines Days, we have been enjoying lunch with friends here. Today was no exception. We arrived at 1, we were seated by a window over looking the now sadly deserted boat docks. Our friends were a bit behind. Host told us she would seat us and bring our friends out to the table. Which she did. Our server today was Lauren. Prior to our friend's arrival she was making sure we had our beverage order taken and in progress. Likewise when our friends arrived and all through lunch, Lauren was very attentive making sure we had refills and cleared away plates as we had finished. Have not had a more professional server and would welcome being served by her again anytime. The beautiful setting here is always a special treat. The food is consistently great and we ordered today old favorites like the pea salad, chophouse burger and my favorite the Chicken Dijon. I am not usually one to leave reviews, but the service was too magnificent to not leave one! I had my mouth ready for this salmon I had the first time back in September but was told it was a seasonal dish. The waitress Esther was kind enough to let me know she would see if the chef can do a simple garlic butter to satisfy my craving. The chef Isaiah was kind enough to work with Esther and make my dream meal come to life. She showed his the picture I had from September and he made me a meal as close as possible with the ingredients had. It turned out so amazing and tasted so similar to the first time I had it. We've patronized Horatio's for decades and love the ambiance, the superior service (our current fav server is Ari when we & our 2 French Bulldogs ate out on the patio on Easter Sunday). The chef was also very accommodating when we requested their signature pea salad and the bartender prepared stellar champagne cocktails. It's a perfect date destination as well as a place to meet friends and enjoy a cocktail or beer and appetizers while enjoying the natural beauty of the San Leandro Marina. Mash potatoes was good, Potatoes was alright, shrimp was good BUT THE SCALLOPS, bad. It had a super strong sour taste i have eaten scallops before, cooked in all types of ways no problem, but this? Have been going to Horatio's for many years now, and decided to go for New Years Eve. We called in advance to make sure the time we got there was okay and we would have plenty of time, but when we were seated we were rushed through every step of our meal. The menu was terrible and forced you to order more food than we wanted to order and we were told that we wouldn't be able to replace any of the sides on the order with what we actually wanted. Forced to pay extra for stuff we didn't want, while not being able to get stuff we did want. Normally we are given complimentary bread to start but this night we were not offered or given any bread the entire night. We ended up getting the surf n turf and our filet mignons (med rare) had a rough leather texture and absolutely no seasoning or flavor on it. Everything looked like it was reheated and thrown together as quickly as possible. Our waiter sat us at a table next to the door and we asked to switch because of how cold it was, before switching I told him that the plates on our first table had hair on it and he wiped it off with his thumb and didn't replace the plates.. Then while we were eating, he stays at our table to tell us how much he hates his job and how terrible it is working for a corporation that doesn't care about him. He then continued to stay and ask us our opinion on if he should go out and party tonight but then complained more about it because he said he had work the next day and couldn't decide if he was going to party, followed by him saying horatios doesn't care about the workers or how the workers feel. While eating our food, they brought out our dessert and check and completely cleaned our table with us still eating our main course. Had to eat with our waiters arms stretched over our bodies and him telling us that they want to try and leave as early as possible so he can decide on if he's going to go out for the night. Really dissappointed in the entire experience. Horatios has been mine and my fiancé's favorite restaurant for years but it seems like the last year every visit the quality and service gets worse and worse. With a view of the San Leandro Marina and tasteful nautical decor, they are perfect for a casual to fancy lunch or dinner. We ordered the breaded mahi mahi with a side of fingerling potatoes, a salmon Caesar salad, and their country fried calamari to share. Everything was excellent, including the cocktail I had ordered which was a pleasantly refreshing strawberry fizz drink. The service was impeccable. This was a delightful meal. My husband surprised me with a date night and requested a window table. We were lucky to be seated right at sunset. I enjoy the old Bay Area seaside vibe.. rustic nautical decor, and I enjoyed the understated elegance. The view is superb! The menu is simple and everything looked great. We shared the crab and artichoke dip for a starter. It was creamy, flavorful and plentiful... our amazing server brought us more crostini so we could finish it. I would say this is easily enough for a table of four to share and get a decent serving. For our entrées he ordered the Crab Cake. I wasn't sure how that would be enough for a meal until they brought it to the table. Wow! He let me taste it! Delicious! I ordered the fresh catch. You're allowed to choose how you want it prepared. I got the Baja Sea Bass with the optional additional of tomato and asparagus relish/sauté. I'm glad I did, otherwise the fish would have been 100% "meh." The veggie été great, though. But I was disappointed in my selection and would choose a different entree next time. Hubs raves about the passion fruit mule... it was pretty tasty, but I prefer my bubbles. Service was attentive and thorough. We skipped dessert, but several options looked appealing. We'll definitely be back. We're hoping to come back soon to enjoy a brunch. Arrived here last night on 8/16 at the reservation 5:30pm to have our 15th year anniversary dinner. Well I ordered the grilled salmon and shrimp Louie salad as my main entree. When it came out after literally a super long wait for our dinner. The iceberg lettuce was old and color was brown and it was worse under the salmon. Also the shrimps were over cooked and rubbery with no taste to them. Didn't have time to let the waitress know since we were on a schedule to attend a show after the dinner. Also my husband ordered the ribeye along with the garlic shrimps on the side. The steak came out without the shrimps and he did let her know, we literally had to wait 10 minutes to get the few pieces of shrimps. No apologies etc. We noted that next time to make sure we do notify the waitress that the food is not appealing and needs to be redone, that's if we want to go back. read more

Went to Horatios yesterday and as always we love the bar as we've always loved Horatios, but definitely not yesterday. I sat and watched the young Asian girl behind the bar continue giving drinks to the staff and having a few herself she was already pretty intoxicated as I've seen in the past with her. She's not a real friendly one always seems either tired, drunk or hung over and we go there a lot. The manager on duty was not much help. In fact, he smelt heavily of alcohol and too busy watching the television which we've seen before also. I believe his name is Marko. An older woman that works there was not quite happy with what was going on either. She thought it was a disgrace to Horatio's the bartender, giving away alcohol to the staff and being pretty drunk herself when she should be working, she should be terminated along with every worker that accepted a drink because that is theft in my eyes this is a business and not a hole in the wall. Why would you want somebody like that running your bar and if you do because I heard that Horatios is under new management then maybe you should get rid of the management also. Drink on your own time not on business time. Your floor manager is useless. Everybody else seems to be doing the work but him. We wanted to head out to the city but it is Fleet Week and no open slots for dinner. I found this place and decided to give it a try. We were early but the ladies in front was able to seat us right away. Dennis is our server and he did an amazing job with both the wine and food recommendations. We started with the calamari and teriyaki beef bits (good apps), followed by the clam chowder (I passed) and then the main courses. The food is well cooked, veggies and meats! I got the pork chop and it was cooked the way I wanted it (and added a side of lobster tail). My husband got the cod and it was cooked to perfection; the same for my two kids' entrees. First time dining here. Love the view looking out to the water! It was very nice atmosphere. Our server was excellent, attentive and friendly! The food came out fast, delicious and with good portions! We started with the Calamari. It was seasoned well and was nice and crispy. My friend ordered the Filet Mignon. She had it topped with Dungeness crab and béarnaise sauce. It came with Yukon gold mashed potatoes which was delicious, and asparagus. I ordered the Ribeye steak. This came with the same delicious mashed potatoes and asparagus. The ribeye had a very nice char taste. It was seasoned well!
