My first experience here was when I was hosting a barbecue with a garden club. The staff was super supportive of our club being there and very nice and interested in learning more. We're lucky to have the space! The second experience I had was when my husband rented a cherry picker. we were told it was going to be delivered to our house on a Saturday but it never came. we called the store to follow up and they told us that it would be delivered after the employee had dinner with his family, which wasn't an issue because we were planning on it the next day. Dinner came and went with no delivery. The next morning, we were hopeful the cherry picker would be delivered the following day. Unfortunately, it never came and we had to follow up. It's mowing season so I suspected a significant delay but instead I was told that they didn't care that I bought it from them, they won't taking any repairs from anyone. Wow! I have stopped patronizing this store due to an experience I had when picking up an online order. Except for one person, staff were very impolite and, in one case, downright hostile. The clerk claimed my order hadn't come in and supposedly reordered it. When it didn't arrive within weeks I finally cancelled the order and made the purchase elsewhere. A week ago, we rented a wallpaper steamer for a home project. Upon moving the steamer into our home, we noticed a dark liquid, with a noticeable odor, dripping from the one attachment. Looking more closely, we discovered this dark liquid had dripped onto our hardwood stairway. We have been unable to remove these stains. In reporting this to Hornungs I indicated we wanted the rental fee refunded, and may need to have Hornungs cover the damage to the stairway. While returning the steamer, I was assured a credit would be applied, and the manager (Charles) would be emailed to contact me. Over a year ago, my 15 year old back patio screen door was damaged during a major wind storm in the area. I called Hornung's and the guys I talked to gave great advice for its removal. Last Spring, I loaded the screen door into my car early in the week and it was ready by Friday. Decent turnaround time. The cost to replace the screen and put on new rollers was a lot cheaper than buying a new door! Great workmanship and cost. Highly recommend! read more

Has a wide variety of products and services: they sell and repair mowers, tractors and all sorts of lawn and garden equipment, they make keys, have fertilizer, bird seed, paint, plumbing supplies, automotive products, all kinds of tools and gadgets. There also is a rental place where you can rent like cherry pickers, lawn mowers or just general tools like drum sanders, air compressor, nail gun, auger, whatever you need. They have plenty of ways to help storage solutions for your shed or garage. PROS: always someone willing to help you, as soon as you walk in. CONS: Prices of almost everything are higher than Lowe's or Home Depot. read more

The rental staff is polite and helpful upon booking . If you just want something at a low price for a picnic or event and you don't mind extra work to clean some tables or if the tents are a bit dirty then go for it. We stopped in here today to buy nuts/bolts and screws for a ping pong table that has been sitting in our family room unassembled for 3 years now. We started with missing parts and just never did anything about it because it was a huge bulky thing to have to take back to the store after we took everything apart. I knew we could get parts at Hornungs. We did just that today. We started at the cash register and the check out girl made a intercom call to anyone who could help us assemble this order from our instruction manual. We got home and got to work right away. It was so helpful that the manager pulling our parts order knew what to get just by looking at the manual list of parts. I always get asked if I need help finding something, but no one is pushy. They are also open 7 days a week. I do not recommend if you need your equipment back in a timely manner. Back around March 15th, I was told that the turnaround time for basic riding mower tuneups were 1-1 1/2 weeks. I dropped of the mower on March 17th. It was completed on April 2nd, 16 days later. At the time I picked mine up, I dropped off a push mower and a rider for my neighbor. I was told 2 1/2 weeks. This was April 3rd. I called on Friday April 19th and was told it would be done next week. I called today, April 25th, over 3 weeks since drop off and was now told sometime next week. The mechanic only works Monday-Friday and is currently (3 pm) working on mowers brought in on April 2nd so very possibly won't be done until next week, almost 4 weeks. If I had wanted this type of service, I would have stayed closer to home and gone to Kerry's. Less time, same costs and at least you know that Kerry's is going to take awhile so less aggrevation!!!! read more

This is the place for service and knowledge in hardware. Where other places like Home Depot sell you something and then abandon you and what they sold you. Hornung's is a place where they fix what they sell you, and advice you correctly in the beginning. Statements like "that is a little more than you need and a waste of your money", or "this costs about 10% more but lasts 3 times longer" are things you can hear there every week. read more

My father and I went into lowes for glue and resin epoxy. As soon as an employee saw us, they immediately asked if we needed help finding something. We told him and he helped us right away and was very nice and friendly. I forget his name but he was an older man with gray hair & a small pony tail. He gave us some extra info on what to look out for when using resin epoxy and even though I already knew what I was doing, he didn't know that but his information was spot on & very accurate. This man knew what he was talking about. I was very impressed. He told us to have a nice day. We went to check out & even the cashier was polite and friendly. If you need your mower back quickly forget it. It took them a month to get my mower back. HOWEVER the mower is working again, and did not cost an arm and or leg. Only reason I'm giving them 3 stars is due to the slow turn around time. As far as the hardware store, they will do in a pinch. They have the basics, and tend to run a little pricier then their big box competitors. Their staff can come off a little grumpy, but they are very knowledgable and will help you find what you need. Every time we go in there we come out with not only the product we need but information on how to use it, which version of the product will work best for our needs, and if they don't have what we are looking for (which is very rare) they win find us a better alternative. They have never steered us wrong and ALWAYS go above and beyond with customer service. Just genuine real nice guys with a lot of knowledge of their products. I recommend always going to them before hitting up any of the larger retail stores. I went to this store to buy a new starter to get my riding mower working. I was expecting to spend $150 for the new starter. They took one look at the unit and instead sold me a $29 kit to rebuild the the top half. They could have very easily sold me the $150 part and made more money. I had Hornungs do their "spring tune up special" on my less than 200 hour Cub Cadet tractor this year. It came back with a $344. dollar billing and broken headlight along with the instruction that I charge the battery. Two weeks later I had to replace the battery and the carburetor was leaking gas all over my garage. They came and picked it up before Memorial day and said they would have it back to me by Tuesday or Wednesday. That was over a week ago and they don't even bother to return my phone calls now. I have bought a lot of Stihl equipment and a tiller from them...because they do the service on them because I try to buy locally from "full service" dealers. I was misguided. read more

Wow! I love this store. Jason treated my as well as any employee at any store I've ever dealt with. They agreed to special order, take my old grill, assemble my new and even deliver 23 miles at a very reasonable price, but I opted to pick it up. They told me when it would be available and then phoned again the day I was to pick-up. I also checked out another, closer-to-home ACE hardware, but wasn't treated as well as at Hornung's. I try to buy where they appear knowledgeable and where I'm treated well. The other store in Etters lost a $1,000 sale. The two men who helped me check-out and load were also amazing. Just got off the phone with Bill Horning, the owner. Yeah, the backup on mower service is about 2 1/2 weeks, but I took it in a week ago, when everybody is starting to use their mowers for the first time this season. Of course they're going to be backed up. Bill said he would give me a loaner in the meantime. A loaner? Where do you get that kind of help and service? Certainly not at Lowe's or Home Depot. But this is indicative of the same service I've gotten over the years there. Rented countless times there and, at least on a few occasions, was not charged a cent when the particular tool didn't work for the job. Before I took my riding mower in last week, I checked the battery, took it to Hornungs and they charged it for free. So some of the products cost a little more than the big two. Big deal. I'm will to pay a little extra for the kind of service and help they provide. Bill, and his family's other stores in the area, are proving there is still a place for the small, helpful hardware store. read more
