I am having a very hard time deciding how many stars. I have been going to Horseshoe grille for years and I love the dining room. The food is very good and reasonably priced. The waitstaff is friendly and efficient. Up until last week I would have given it 5 stars. Last visit I heard good music in the bar after dinner and went in and ordered a drink to listen. After a few minutes I noticed that every TV monitor on the wall was tuned to Fox news. (I don't want to watch ANY news while relaxing and listening to music, this is not the time for it on multiple monitors all around the room.). When I asked the bartender if she could change it to something milder, she immediately shot back at me that I was rude. She started haranguing me that I'd asked her 'in the wrong way' and she even pointed to a man across the bar to loudly tell me it was his choosing. I am not a confrontational person and I was polite. She seemed to be trying to set up a confrontation of some sort (BTW I am a small older woman). I will never go in to that bar area again, and I am sort of hesitant about the whole place now. Went here after hearing the hype from my family. My family is truly a connoisseur of wonderful food so I was expecting a wonderful meal. The chicken in the Caesar salad was incredibly dry. The haddock with rice pilaf was $25, but tasty and ample portion size. The "small bites" however, Grilled Tenderloin was $13.95! Now when I say small, I mean SMALL! (Just look at the picture). The waitress Laura was very inattentive, she only came to the table to have us order and then later, to drop the food off. Long story short, I will not be coming back. Meh. Ordered chili nachos with pulled pork. They looked stacked and tasty but they were surprisingly bland. No spice, no salt outside of some BBQ flavor from the pork. Rueben sandwich had almost no thousand island dressing and the sauerkraut was imprisoned in a brick of fried cheese. Corned beef over cooked though the buttered marbled rye was good. My boyfriend and I went to grab some dinner and we were sat down at the patio. Right behind us was a table of maybe 6, we sat at the table for 25 minutes without one person coming up to us. The table behind us was served their drinks, ordered their food and a second round of beverages. wait staff continued to look at us and walk away. Recently moved to the area. I took a seat at the bar and immediately felt comfortable. Kelly the bartender was awesome in making me feel right at home. Had the steak tips, rice pilaf, and green beans. Tips were cooked to perfection. Beans were nice and crisp. The pilaf was very flavorful. They had a decent selection of draft beer. Nice and cold. I would just like to pass on a very positive experience we had last Saturday at The Horseshoe in North Reading. We had our small wedding reception (20 people) last Saturday Night at The Horseshoe. It was absolutely perfect! Our servers Amy & Jacki were on top of things none of our guests had to wait for anything. The pace of the event was great, not rushed not drawn out. We were in a huge outdoor tent along with another large party. Singer Tom Bruhl was in the tent entertaining us in his talented ways. Chef Al and his team gave us Perfect meals, all hot, fresh and delicious. Our guests were blown away, by the quality of the service and food. As it should be on your wedding day. All these successes could be partially because the Owner is heavily involved in his restaurant. He was in constant contact with my parents leading up to the event and checked on our party and our satisfaction at least 8-10 times during the course of the evening. I could go on and on, and give recommendations. But what I really want to say is Thank You to everyone at The Horseshoe for making a very special day in our lives even more memorable! read more

I think my impression of Horseshoe Grill is closer to their overall rating, though I have no problem erring on the side of generous. They do a lot of things right. If I had to sum up my experience in 3 words, it would be "Comfort BBQ Plus." The atmosphere is enjoyable and relaxing, and you can tell it's a popular destination by the number of people meeting here for drinks after dinner or girls' night out. I bet its even more enjoyable in the dining room in the winter when the fire is going. I was quite satisfied with the drink selection and the prompt service. The cornbread which came out with our drinks was dense and relatively moist. The maple butter that came with it would have benefited from having been at room temperature a few more minutes before coming to the table. This satisfaction continued with the sides accompanying our dinners. I know they have more, but I'd be content with the beans and cole slaw every time, especially the slaw. It was fresh and had horseradish without being too creamy. Where I will get picky is with the BBQ portions of our meals. I felt the half bbq chicken and the St. Louis Ribs suffered the same ailments. They could have been a little less dry, and they could have had an even stronger flavor. They were still satisfying. This is one of those places where, despite the bbq not living completely up to expectations, I would want to come back and sample much more of the menu. read more

The kids went with the nachos grande to start. It could be renamed the Kilimanjaro of Queso. Nana and the boys leveled it and reported positive flavor. Trying to AMP up my protein intake, I went with the Ahi app and small plate fillet. They were kind to substitute the potato's with a more caveman friendly steamed broccoli. The food was well prepared and I applaud the ownership's desire to bring a more upscale level of dinning to Rt 28. "Nothing special - disappointing" Okay, with that out of the way: I still haven't learned despite going there five or six times that there's nothing but average food here that is priced too high. My last visit included the Horseshoe steak tips. They were pretty bad - full of gristle and an unremarkable marinade. I asked for medium and got a range of doneness from rare to well done on my plate. The time before that I had pulled pork. The only way to make it palatable was to smother it with barbecue sauce. It's sad - Pat Lee and his family has tried so hard to make this place a destination for dinner. Their waitstaff leaves a lot to be desired. Again, on the last visit, the waitress I had was inattentive and unhelpful. Will I go back again? Probably. We've been to the Horseshoe Grille about a half dozen times and have never had a bad experience. The restaurant is nicely decorated with a centrally located fireplace in the main dining area. The booths are roomy and seating is not cramped, and the tables are well spaced. It's nicely styled inside and out and has an upscale vibe. The waitstaff is attentive and well-trained. The managers routinely check the dining room and greet patrons. Tonight was no exception and the on duty manager was incredibly nice and friendly when he stopped by our table. Our waitress was also very nice and checked on us several times, took dirty dishes away promptly and offered us their dessert selection at the end. Their training and experience shows and we've felt well tended to every time we've been there. The food is very good with an eye toward presentation. I had a bowl of Death Valley chili (a bean chili with melted cheese, chilis, onion and peppers on top, served with nacho chips) and we had a half order of nachos grande as an appetizer. The only thing I'd say is that the Death Valley chili was very similar to the nachos grande, so in hindsight I would have ordered one or the other, not both. For the entree I had an andouille sausage flat bread pizza, served on a plank. It was cheesy and good. My wife got the panko-crusted chicken and she said it was "delish." I saw a rack of their ribs on their way to another table and they looked very good. I think that's what I'll order next time. Parking can be a little bit of a challenge when it's busy, and they do a brisk business. However, there is parking around back and a convenient path, behind barriers to allow patrons to enter and exit safely. With young ones, parking lots everywhere can be a little harrowing, so I appreciate the extra thought and design they put into the parking area. read more

I went here for the first time last night with my boyfriend. We were in the mood for barbecue, so we ordered the BBQ sampler, turkey tips, and a burger. All the food was outstanding! Our server was an older woman. I believe her name was something like Jean? Anyway, she was very friendly and helpful. She let us know about the specials for that day, and even though it was late and nearing the end of the day, she still put in 100% effort. We have not ventured out for outdoor dining but it is a nice treat to have a local restaurant with good food. This place is awful. I ordered Surf n Turf and the lobster tail was too salty it took away any flavor that it had. My 6oz tenderloin was not cooked to medium well(which i asked for) instead it came back medium rare. My waitress has very poor customer service. She never checked in. It took her forever to bring us the check and wrap up our food. My mother ordered ribs. They were fatty and thin and didn't seem to have any meat on them. Celebrated a Friday night with takeout here. I went a few years ago, and this time I debated between the butternut squash noodles and veggie burger. I decided on the veggie burger as it was much cheaper. It was pretty decent, but had a strong taste of cumin. I wish there were more spices to it. I loved the side of fries it came with; they were just the right amount of greasy and were both soft and crispy. They reheated very well the next day, too. Tried the "shoe" for the first time last night. We have been missing out! This place is great!! From the minute we walked in until the moment we left we were treated like family. The bartenders, Amy and Katie were extremely friendly. We chose to eat at the bar as we were watching the basketball game. (They have several televisions, great place to watch a game). When it was time to order, Amy explained the menu to us. They are known for their BBQ. The menu is extensive but not so much that you can't make a decision. Husband had the BBQ tasting plate which consisted of two kinds of pulled pork, two ribs and some onion rings with a side of calamari. All was delicious. I had the seared scallops and substituted fries for the rice. Also came with green beans. Scallops were fantastic!! Couldn't finish them. When it was time to leave, the owner, Pat came over and introduced himself and gave us a container of their cornbread and two sides of sauce as a thank you!! Can't say enough good things about the Horeshoe. But get there early or make a reservation because it was packed by 6:00 pm and people were still coming in when we left at 9:00!! read more

Hello I'm street eating legend King Eat, and today I'll be reviewing Horseshoe Grille. Ate here the other day and it was alright. We got a couple bowls of cornbread (complimentary) which were pretty good. The bread is nice (not AMAZING!!) and moist, but I was hoping it'd be warm which it wasn't. The butter that came with it was pretty cold and not easy to spread. So when you're putting your clumps of butter on your cornbread you're kinda tearing the bread up at the same time. They should find some way to soften the butter or serve whipped butter. The beer selection was pretty basic, so they seem to try to take two basic beers, and mix it into one great beer that ends up being ok. For example; they have Guiness and blue moon, so they put them together and call it a black and blue. Sure. Instead they should do this; remove 3 beers from your drafts and replace them with Mayflower, Jacks Abbey...and...... Stone? Sure. The buffalo chicken dip was alright. I thought the chips that came with it were really good though Ordered the St Louis ribs, and they were ok. Kind of on the dry side. The roasted rosemary sweet potatoes were petty good, but nothing you couldn't make at home, and the BBQ baked beans were.......BBQ baked beans. Our waitress was sweet, answered all questions and gave us extra cornbread. Plus. Would I go back? Maybe to try the ice cream cake I saw the people next to us eating, or slide my number to the cute waitress (if I didn't have a girlfriend). Pulled chicken was bland, Ribs were, at best, Applebees or 99 quality. As previous reviews mention, no BBQ sauce at table and the food was only drizzled with sauce. Pulled pork was the best of the bbq we ordered, but it was not spectacular and very dry. Chili was heavy brown bean flavor, light on meat and more the kind that would get poured on hot dogs or served over nachos. When the bill came it was surprisingly more expensive than I anticipated. I think this is a probably a great place to hang if you are going to grab some beers, wings, etc. But in terms of a quality meal out, I was disappointed. read more

I used to be a big fan. We went for dinner tonight and sat in the new outdoor area. While the outdoor area shows potential to be superb (it is still not complete) the service was atrocious. They have a new GM / host who spent the evening schmoozing the tables but he failed to recognize that our waters and beverages were all empty. After we were done with appetizers it took so long to have our plates clears that we finally got up and cleared / stacked them all. Drinks took forever to come. A root bear took over 20 minutes. All of the food came out cold. It was honestly one of my worst restaurant experiences in awhile. It wasn't a busy night and the waitress never once apologized, not did the GM / host. I should preface this review by saying BBQ is not one of favorite cuisines but I had a craving. Ordered the meatball app, ribs, meatloaf, brussel sprouts and the bread pudding bites. Overall like a 5-6/10. The meatballs were okay, the ribs would have been far better had they been cooked longer because they were very tough :/ the sauce was good so I wish the ribs had been cooked better and it would have been better. The meatloaf was my partners so no review on that. The sprouts were good but nothing to write home about, had the bacon been fattier and perhaps prepped differently the dish would have been a little less dry. I LOVE that hey offer roasted beets as a side so props on that. And the cornbread was stellar! So good and bad with the meals. Anyhoo. Overall not a bad meal but not really worth the slightly higher price you pay here. Probably won't order again though. read more
