We went to Hoshi on the day of my birthday. I wanted to try this restaurant since it was first open. The place has a nice waterfront view from both the patio and inside the restaurant. They have some very interesting beer selections. We ordered their sweet potato beer. The beer was smooth and didn't have a stronger bitter after taste. They also gave me a glass of complimentary champagne for my birthday as well! Everyone ordered a hot pot of some sort so we ended up doing the same as well cuz... you know... FOMO They have kaiseki too but I can't eat shellfish so we didn't go for that option. We ordered: - chicken karaage - salmon and toro oshi - salmon sashimi - sukiyaki hotpot - oden They have free parkings shared with Na Jia. Overall, we really enjoyed the dinner. Nice view, food and drink.

You can't ask for the better location to enjoy great japanese classics, a class of cocktail, and the perfect sunset. If you want something truly special, you gotta try their Matsutake Suimono, inspired by traditional soups served to emperors in ancient Japan. You can pre-order this in advance but definitely worth it. Seasonal produce/seafood such as clams, okra, crab meat, all incorporated in a thickened clear soup had plenty of umami and truly satisfying. Along with this, their special menu features were all great for a summer feast to share with family and friends. Bluefin Tuna w/Mango Salsa had very good textural contrasts and balance of flavours were consistent. Sakemuchi Clams were one of our favourites of the night, with gentle plump meat (and no grits) plus plenty of sake flavour. Mentaiko Dashi Maki Tamago was also our favourite with its sweet eggy aroma and the tart/savoury sauce complementing the egg's richness very well. Beef Tongue Steak was not dry and the garlic chips were crispy without being burnt, which took skills. They were also very generous with large pieces of seared seafoods for their Aburi Set Chef's Selection. Thanks to the gracious staff, it was a tasty meal with great atmosphere. We really enjoyed the vibrant colors on each plate and fresh seafoods.

Nice spot for a casual bite of Japanese food. Is it the best Japanese food? No. But I've had far, far worse, and the food is anywhere from decent to pretty good, the location is excellent, and service great. It's very well priced, especially given the location, and a fairly sizeable patio for a small restaurant. Just a warning that the patio is in the shade by the afternoon, and coupled with the cool marine breeze, it can be quite blustery and cold even during a summer evening, so I recommend bringing a sweater or jacket along.

The old M8 location by the water. Prices on the high side for what you get. Didn't think the unagi was worth $9 a piece. Wasn't even hot or preferably slightly crispy burnt. Best dish was the large clams. Beef tongue well marinated but not particularly tender. For a restaurant with a decent view food is acceptable. Note parking access closed at 10 pm sharp. PS forgot to mention online reservation works. Got an email and text promptly after filling up web form.

Came for happy hour today. I had the sunset cocktail and the tatanka cocktail. The tatanka cocktail is made with apple juice. It was on the sweeter side. The sunset cocktail was more refreshing and sour. I prefer the sunset over the tatanka. The pizza sushi tasted like a crispier okonomoyaki. Would not recommend. The oysters did not taste fresh (or maybe it was just ours). There was a very strong milky flavour and the soy sauce ponzu sauce did not help with the fishy flavour. The Toro aburi sushi was the best thing we had all night. Very smokey - you really can't go wrong with aburi sushi. Would recommend it but it is on the pricier side. The beef tongue came with a salad and garlic chips. Some parts were very nice and flavourful while the end parts were chewy and disappointing. Would not order this again. Overall i felt like it was a bit pricey for happy hour. The food was mediocre. Would definitely recommend the aburi sushi and the sunset cocktail but other than that I would probably not go again unless I was looking for somewhere with a nice view and they have free parking downtown which is great.

Good location but poor service. First, the sashimi had a piece ofhair, and then the Sakamushi clam soup had a few clams with mud and shells on the inside. The waitress only said that she would notify this to the supplier... Other foods are still quite satisfactory.

Hoshi is an amazing restaurant, the food was amazing, the sashimi tasted really fresh and was prepared well and also visually appealing. The tempura was not overly greasy and tasted great, the desserts were also great! The rolls were also delicious, a lot of different choices to choose from! Would recommend this restaurant to friends and family! On top of the food, the restaurant is in a great location with views of the water and boats from the patio and inside. The owners are incredibly nice and friendly, servers are attentive and hospitable. The area itself is beautiful for a walk around after dinner as well, there is free visitor parking in a underground once you receive a pass from the restaurant.

The service was terrible and the price was ridiculous high. It's very hard to communicate with the waitress. Spent almost $300 for two!!! The drink taste bad because of excessive ice. The price for uni menu doesn't fit with the taste. The waitress told us they have the sea snails when we placed the order. We waited until we pay and got notified that they were sold out....very disappointed... we also got served with the very expensive wagyu beef without even knowing that until we pay. Not recommend this place and it ruined our Valentine's Day.

Pretty damned good-a sunny table in a sunny little cafe with delicious food and outstanding service from happy friendly people. So glad to see the seawall with some life on it and this place is the icing on the cake-can't wait to head down again!

This restaurant has been on my radar to try for awhile now. Finally going to be in the downtown area for the evening and took the opportunity to check it out. A word of caution, if you are using gps to get here, you will either ended up circling back over to the other side of the Burrard bridge or it will tell you to jump down the bridge. Therefore it is best to look at the location on the map to get to the restaurant. I'll save everyone the trouble, although the restaurant address says located on Beach avenue, the physical restaurant is actually situated along the seawall underneath the Burrard bridge. There are a fair amount of pay parking nearby. I called ahead to reserved a table even though it's on a weekday evening. When we arrived, my memory recalled from my memory many years ago it used to be an Asian fusion restaurant before? We were greeted and offered a table by the window, thank goodness not a small cubicle. Inside of the restaurant was quite small but had a warm welcoming ambience to it, there's also a patio outside with additional seatings. The waitresses were friendly, attentive and very informative on the menu and the daily specials. After scanning the code onto my phone and browsing through the menu, here were the food we ordered; 1. Truffle corn. The taste was decent but the price for half a corn sliced into 4 spears is a bit steep. 2. Mozuku bafun uni shooter. Quite tasty with a nice refreshing flavour to it. 3. 5 kinds of sashimi chefs pick. Everything were fresh and delicious. 4. Foie gras aburi and albacore toro. The foie gras were nicely seared and tasty, however the toro were a bit dry and didn't have that nice buttery flavour. 5. Bafun uni and otoro nigiris. The bafun uni were good and the otoro barely made it to the borderline freshness. 6. Chu toro nigiris. Ordered them but the waitress came back and told us the chu toros weren't so fresh so the chef wouldn't serve them. Much appreciated for not serving not so fresh sushi! Thumbs up 7. Whisky grilled Miyazaki A5 wagyu with mustard sauce. Ate quite a bit of regular wagyu and A5 wagyu in various style of cuisines to various methods of cooking ever since they were introduced by the restaurants here. I don't know what to say about this dish?!? It was a bit more chewy then the A5 I am used to eating and the smothering of the overly sweet sauce totally masked and killed the beautiful and buttery flavour of the A5!! As far as I know, a nice quick seared at higher temp with a minimal seasoning is more then needed to bring out the beautiful natural buttery and tender taste of most wagyu especially the A5 wagyu?? Totally disappointed with this dish. An A5 failed! Overall, this is a nice little place to sit down and enjoy some fresh sushi as long as you don't mind its steeper prices. Both the service and food quality are okay, except for the failed A5 wagyu. but with the price I paid here compared to a few hidden gems, I would rather go to them for the same or better quality but at cheaper price tag. I would give this place a good 3-3.5 stars but cause of the wagyu, sorry a soft 2 stars.

My friends and I decided to meetup and enjoy and sushi dinner and we chose Hoshi since we all haven't been here before. The restaurant is at a beautiful location with views of the water but it is a bit tricky to find, you have to go down the stairs by the grass to see the restaurant. We decided to eat on the patio since it was such a beautiful day. We all decided to get drinks, my friends both got the sunset beach drink and I got a drink that was like a gin & tonic but it had berries (don't remember the name). We really wanted to try their sashimi and oshi here so we decided to get an order of the sockeye salmon sashimi, they were so nice to add an additional piece so the 3 of us could all have 2! And we got the sockeye salmon oshi and toro oshi. We all agreed that the sockeye salmon sashimi was some of the freshest fish we've ever had it was soo good! Both the salmon and toro oshi were amazing, perfect fish to rice ratio and the sauce was amazing. We also got the hotate butter scallops and it was so juicy and flavourful, it also came with grilled mushrooms and they were so delicious and had the nice grilled smell. We also got a side of kushikatsu which was just skewered pork katsu and it was really good as well, they did a great job frying and the batter was crispy and light and paired well with the katsu sauce, I got kind of unlucky as my piece was mainly fat but my friends pieces were all meat. We also got the sunset roll to try which consisted of tempura prawn, cucumber, avocado, topped with sockeye salmon, tobiko and their housemade spicy mayo. The roll was really good, nothing too crazy but their housemade spicy mayo was amazing and took the roll up a notch. Lastly, we got the kimchi beef yakiudon to share and it was my first time trying a kimchi yakiudon and it was quite tasty although spicy, I did like how the pieces of beef were really big. All in all, we all agreed to return since everything was so good but the waitress only provided us with 1 menu and we later saw inside that they had another set menu which we will try next time.

Delicious cocktails and friendly warm welcoming service. We had the oshi rolls and some other items not posted in the pictures. I recommend ordering the Bluefin salsa sashimi it's amazing. Stroll down the seawall after for a nice walk by the water. Perfect for date night!

One of the best parts is the ever-changing menu of daily specials alongside the regular menu, so there's always something new to try while still coming back to your favorites. This visit we ordered the shrimp garlic fried rice, Agedashi Nasu, Grilled Squid with Garlic Mayo, and an assortment of sashimi. The shrimp garlic fried rice is an absolute must every time. It's packed with flavor, perfectly seasoned, and somehow manages to be comforting without feeling too heavy. It is a large dish and can easily be shared by 3-4, depending on what else you order. We also love the Agedashi Nasu here with melt-in-your-mouth eggplant wrapped in a light, delicate coating that soaks up the savory broth. Service is always quick and organized, even when the restaurant is busy. Dishes arrive as they're ready, making it easy to share everything around the table, which is exactly how an izakaya experience should feel. If it's your first visit, don't skip the shrimp garlic fried rice, and make sure to check out the daily specials before ordering. They often feature seasonal dishes that aren't available on the regular menu and are well worth trying.

But in other parts of the world the meal is what's important and so is a quick turn around. Guu with Garlic reminded me a lot of the Izakaya restaurants I found under the train lines of Tokyo in many ways, including the amount of time it felt right to stay. The food came out quick, the servers took orders quicker, and the alcohol came out chilled and as nice contrast to the hot food. Looking around and you see the hand written menu on blackboard surfaces on the walls and this feeling of authenticity. The heat of the flames from the kitchen can be felt and seen if you sit at the bar. And the flavors just hit all the right notes. Starting with appetizers, a section izakayas shine at, the first dish we got was their scallop and mayo pizza. With a crispy crunch on the bottom and crust, this reminds you of the flavors of a baked volcano roll or scallop roll you can find in almost any North American sushi restaurant. Just like that dish, it's important to eat it while it's still hot so it doesn't get gross and 느끼 에. Then came the yellowtail tuna "tempura" pieces. Thick pieces of yellowtail tuna flash fried for just the right crisp on the outside with slight pink of the fish inside. It is meaty without being oily or fatty. Great bite. The beef tongue after was interesting. From the color of the sauce it accompanies it you would think it would be heavy in flavor but it is actually light and citrusy. A good cut into the richer tones of the beef tongue. The yaki udon was one of the best I ever had. It was smokey without being overpowering. The beef was thin and tender and balanced well with the mushrooms it also came with. The udon noodles stayed bouncy and chewy which I didn't expect from being grilled. Very tasty and highly recommend this dish. For our final bite we shared a hot stone bowl of their pork and cabbage rice. With the hot stone bowl constantly cooking even after this dish arrived it was imperative to stir the ingredients together constantly for the first two minutes. It allowed for the runny egg to meld with the rice and the crispy texture of some ingredients was a nice bonus. All in all, I loved eating here and if my appetite was bigger I would've tried more on their menu. A solid place to eat with a great atmosphere, if you're looking for delicious food that won't take too much of your time but still lingers in your memories you have to check out Guu with Garlic.

I was planning on requesting a second serving of cabbage but I was full at the end. The dipping sauce for the katsu was a little too tard for me though so I could only dap my katsu pieces very very lightly in it so I wasn't able to experience the full flavour of the sauce. I made reservations about 4 months in advance. Upon arrival, one of the hostesses opened the door for us, and asked us to wait in a very ornate waiting area. We only waited a couple of minutes before another hostess seated us at the main seating area. The space is very dark, and only lit with candles while the rest of the diners trickled in. During that time they take drink orders, which is limited to sake, wine, beer and a few non-alcoholic drinks. Of note, they don't provide a drink menu, so we were a little surprised by the cost - the yuzu sake and the plum wine were $30 each. My non-alcoholic drink was $12, but a fair size. The theatrical portion started a few minutes later than the official start time - closer to 6pm. The shades lifted, the lights turned on, and the chefs introduced themselves. And from that moment on, they immediately went to work preparing our meal. They operate like clockwork to show the ingredients whole to the diners, and then preparing them, and serving them. Soon as the one dish was completed by all the diners, the next round came shortly after. Over 20+ dishes, there was very little wait time in between each. Each time a dish was served, a hostess was there to describe the dish and provided tips on how best to eat it. The food was overall was very good. Most of the ingredients are imported from Japan, so I would imagine that it's part of the reason it's so expensive. This is definitely a splurge meal. I think half the diners at our sitting was celebrating a birthday. On the most part, the food is very good, watching the chefs at work is part of the entertainment, and the service is excellent. At the start, guests sit in silence as a black screen conceals the chefs. You see their shadows moving behind it. A bell rings, the screen lifts, and the performance begins. Dinner is a 25+ course experience priced at $325 per person. It's undeniably a splurge, but for a milestone celebration, it feels justified. The menu is seafood-forward, with many ingredients flown in from Japan. Each ingredient is presented before preparation, then carefully assembled and served directly from chef to guest. Courses arrive one by one, never rushed. The service team moves seamlessly in the background, refilling water and attending to drinks (available as an add-on) without disrupting the flow. The finale is a matcha ceremony, whisked in front of you with the same quiet precision that defines the evening. People who haven't been to an izakaya may think it's loud and noisy, but the point of izakayas is they're supposed to be vibrant, high energy, and filled with cheerful chatter. Think of a tapas-style pub/bar for people to unwind and gather to chat after a long day at work. I loved the atmosphere, as it's casual, entertaining, and lively. The food was great and I couldn't think of a dish I didn't like. The sashimi were so fresh and high quality. Of course they use freshly grated wasabi too. Me, I know nothing about Izakaya or what is or isn't authentic Japanese cuisine, so this review is coming from someone with zero knowledge or expectation of any specific foods or experiences. Despite it being a weeknight, the place was packed. It was good that we had a reservation. There was a couple in line before me and they were walk-ins, and there were no available seats for them. I noted how small this place was, and crowded, with the tables close together and a long bar with a counter and barstools there (also close together). Our reserved table was right by the front door - literally, - so every time the door opened, we got a gust of cold air (and it was a cold February night when we were there). I kept my coat on. Truth be known, I was not very comfortable. Also, it was loud. Very loud. I like how the staff shout Japanese greetings to diners whenever they enter but between the frequent shouts and the sheer volume of chatter from all the diners, all sitting close together in close proximity, it was kinda hard to hear what my friends were saying during our dinner. That said, the environment was super vibrant and, again, my friends said this was very typical of an Izakaya in Japan. Food-wise, I have no idea what my friends ordered. The menu was primarily available by way of a QR code and I had no idea what the dishes were, so I deferred to my friends' knowledge. But I can attest that all the dishes were DELICIOUS. We had some sort of Japanese street food "pancakes" (they were wonderful). We had some sort of stirfry beef with noodles (amazing). We had two types of sashimi (omg both were so fresh and so so good!). We had a few other dishes that I can't recall, but I remember I loved them. So.... the food here was GREAT. Service was also attentive which I hadn't expected, being as busy as the restaurant was. I really liked this place but I'll probably go back in the summertime when the weather is nicer as I was cold there, and I'd dine at an off-time, when the volume wasn't so loud. (I'm too old for the loudness!).

The food was presented beautifully, especially the crispy tempura, which was perfectly seasoned and light. The quality of everything we ordered was impressive. We were particularly fond of the rolls served on the dark ceramic plates. It was such a relaxing atmosphere to spend an evening in, and we will definitely be back again soon.

She did not smile, barely spoke to us, and when we said "thank you," she simply put the food on the table in silence. What was especially disturbing was the obvious difference in the way she treated us compared with guests at another table. She was smiling, talking, and being friendly with them, while showing us a completely different attitude. We felt singled out and discriminated against, and it made us very uncomfortable. In all the many years my family and I have lived in Vancouver, this was the worst and most disgusting restaurant service experience we have ever had. The prices are also quite high compared with other sushi cafés, but there was nothing special about the experience to justify paying that much--especially with such poor service. High prices do not excuse disrespectful treatment of customers. We will definitely not return, and I would not recommend this place to anyone who expects basic courtesy and respectful service.
