Went for lunch today at 12:30pm. Ordered the Caesar salad and schnitzel, mom had butter and fries. The waitress didn't bring the salad out before our lunch, and the wait was a solid 30 minutes before the food came out and the restaurant was not busy. I saw our salad sitting for 15 minutes on the shelf and she never came by or brought it before the main meal like most restaurants do. It was obvious she forgot to bring the salad out. It also had too much dressing on it. A staff member tried to play it off that I should've told them I wanted the salad brought out before my meal. Why would my mom want to eat a salad with her burger and fries? Anyhow, the schnitzel was a generous size but tasted very gamey and was hard to cut-I needed a steak knife. The pierogis were over cooked. The burger was excellent and fries were tasty. The place is clean and ambiance is very relaxing. Overall, I was not impressed and would not come again for lunch here. read more

Was not a great breakfast. 3 of the items from the breakfast menu were out of stock. The latte had glitter sprinkles in it which was not on the menu description. Could not finish. It was my first time here and learned that the menu changes every few months. This restaurant has different chefs every few months so each person can showcase their recipes (really unique idea). Food was phenomenal. We ordered the Cajun Beef Sausage Hash 3.6/5 $16, Cajun Crawfish Benedict 4/5 (would've been 5/5 but the eggs were overcooked) $18, Lox Toast 4/5 $18, Banana Upside Down French Toast (please get this if it's still on the menu, I don't like too much sweetness and this was perfect) 5/5 $14. The service was standard and the ambiance was impeccable. I loved everything about this place from the looks, decor, easy menu (also liked the size of the menu. The perfect size and doesn't take up table space). There are hooks underneath the tables & bar area if you need a place for your bags. Two different bar areas. Women's bathroom has two stalls both clean, not sure about the men's though! Thank you to the owner + manager for not limiting dress code and looks for their employees! My wife and our two toddlers stumbled by this beautiful restaurant on our way to the airport. Although they weren't officially open yet, the owner and staff welcomed us in and proceeded to deliver a high class experience. The food, service and atmosphere were amazing. What a lovely experience. Downtown Utica was the perfect mid-point for us, with easy access to the main freeways. Get here before the current menu changes on 5/4 (even though I am confident the next menu will also be amazing). The atmosphere of this place is adorable and the service was spot on. My favorite bar is Sugar House in Detroit and my all time favorite drink is the E.F.G, Host's Galactic Conquest is pretty damn close in flavor. It's not smoked like the E.F.G buy what a treat it was. My boyfriend and I have had Host on our list of places we want to eat out and experience for quite some time. In December we finally made a reservation and it did not disappoint. The food and cocktails were delicious! Based off the menu at that time we ordered Brussel Sprouts, Lobster Mac n Cheese and Lamb Burger. All very very good! We ordered a few temporary holiday cocktails and their Espresso Martini is the best I have had yet. But what made our experience even better was our waitress, very personable, very attentive, gave her own options when asked and she actually brought us a free appetizer, due to an extra being made, and the Fried Chicken was even better than the rest. Would highly recommend and the best part is that every few months there is a new menu/Chef, so we will be back several times a year! read more

ATTENTION DOWNTOWN UTICA!!! THIS IS EVERYTHING YOU COULD BE! TAKE NOTES!!! I hope this is the start of a Downtown Utica face lift. This is the cutest like downtown area and it's lack luster is so heartbreaking. Host gives the perfect example of the revenue that could come back to Utica. Think of the bars back in 2008 and all of the people... this could be the new Utica. I've been here a couple time now. Beautiful ambience, great food, great service, delicious drinks! I'm quite the critic, but this place has impressed me. Note- the menu changes with the chef, so everything I've had (and review) may not be there when you go. But, I love this concept, always new and keeps you coming back to see what's new I've had the Lox toast- great! A little cheap on the Lox and onion- but still filling and great taste! The Cajun crawfish Benedict was good.... The hollandaise sauce was cold.... Not a of huge fan of that, made the whole dish cold. The kale salad was good, nice light meal. Now, for the STAR of the show... THE GRITS! As some one who frequents the south, Michigan is NOT the place for grits but this place nailed it!!! My wife and I visited on 10/29 after learning of Host from a neighbor. This restaurant does not disappoint. The interior is a beautifully renovated building in downtown Utica. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. We ordered Flannel Jams and Conjuring Spring from the cocktail (both delicious, well balanced drinks). For dinner we ordered the smoked plum and burrata, leek bread pudding, grilled asparagus and the burger. Everything was delicious and amazingly flavorful. Was lucky enough to attend when Chef Tim was in the Kitchen. I had scallops that were perfectly prepared on a celery root puree and a spicy corn sauce - fantastic! Others at the table raved about their salmon rockefeller and lamb chops. The Art Vandelay cocktail was also a hit. This guest chef format made my recent trip to the like-concept Frame look like a fast food desperation stop. Looking forward to trying brunch and keeping an eye on future menus. read more

Unpleasant experience at Host Friday night. Called on Thursday to inquire about a reservation for their "ghost bar" and was told no availability. Then inquired about their Instagram post that stated "separate and dedicated space for guests that dine with us prior in the evening". Proceeded to make an 8 pm reservation for Friday and was told to "tell the hostess right away that you are planning to go up to the ghost bar after dining" and you will be put on the wait list for the area upstairs reserved for the dining guests". Arrived 10 minutes earlier than our reserved time and did as instructed and told the hostess we did, indeed, plan to go upstairs after eating and was told it was completely reserved and that it would not be possible. I had advised that is not what I was told on the phone or what their Instagram post had listed. The hostess replied that they changed the way they way doing things last week. I informed her that I had just called the day before and she said they changed things again just that day and that the only way we could get into the ghost bar would be if someone else canceled. We thought we would give it a shot. After ordering a round of drinks and a pizza, we were told they stopped making pizza and could we order from their main menu. Normally, that would not have been an issue but truly there was nothing on the menu that appealed to our group (authentic Spanish menu) and settled on the meat/cheese board that came with like only 4 little bread crostini's. When we asked if we could get a few more crostini's to finish up the remaining meat/cheese; the waitress advised "she didn't know" and "wasn't sure if they could do that". It truly seemed like the ghost bar was just a ruse to get customers to spend money on a meal. We were all very frustrated that after playing their little game not only did they not follow through with what we had been advised but also disappointed that they seemed to care less that we had made a reservation as suggested and were not going to get up to the ghost bar which was our intention in the first place. Needless to say, we were not the only group that seemed to be having this experience and we seen many groups turn and leave. We will not be visiting Host anytime soon after their lack of organization and careless regard for their customers. read more

Went to dinner at Host with a group of 7. The food was excellent, but the pacing of items wasn't great. The majority of the table ordered only entrees, so it's not like there were multiple stages of small plates everyone was sharing. The 4 star rating is due to the 3% credit card processing fee that was included in the bill. I understand the costs of rising input/food prices, but this line item should already be embedded in the cost of the food/drinks. It's unusual for a restaurant of this caliber to charge this. So, I'd return for the food, but would bring cash. read more

My fiance and I had dinner here on Oct. 14th and had an overall good experience. The dinner menu was excellent and the service was good. However, about a week later, we came back for brunch and it was a completely different experience: 1.) There was no host or hostess to greet you initially when you walk through the door (same thing happened our first time there). The server who eventually greeted us was unsure of the seating process/ online reservations. 2.) The service during brunch was terrible: The server was unfamiliar with the menu, when asked about items or specifics on the menu, his reply was "That's a good question..." We asked the server more than five times for condiments, drink refills, and the bill. I had to keep reminding him to bring the bill and eventually I just walked the bill up to him because it was taking so long for him to come back, mind you it was not that busy where this should have been an issue, he was cleaning silverware. 3.) Brunch was unremarkable, at best. The potatoes were tasteless, the bananas foster french toast was a whole loaf of bread, toasted, with hardened caramelized sauce on top, rendering the "french toast" inedible, with barely any bananas. The brunch presentation was lackadaisical with the items appearing to be just tossed on the plate (night and day difference from dinner one week prior). 4.) The owner, whom we have met before and was very nice, only approached a hand full of tables to check on their experience in which we were not included. As a brand new business and business owner I would hope he would check on everyones experience given how small of a restaurant it is. Host is an awesome idea and a great trendy spot for the Utica area. We are writing this review because we want to see this place do well and flourish. My fiance and I visit a lot of restaurants in the metro Detroit and Detroit area: Vertical, Marrow, Mabel Grays, Highlands, Grey Ghost, She Wolfe, San Morello, etc. We see many similarities between the aforementioned places and Host especially when it comes to the food and ambiance, however, it is just missing that quality customer service. Without that, a restaurant can fail. Being a new restaurant or not, there should be zero issues or excuses for the poor service. That should be the number one priority. Sorry this got long winded but like I said we just really want to see this place improve and do better. read more

Had dinner with my wife last night. I would expect from a high-priced upscale place that there would be at least free bread or bread sticks while you wait for your meal. Also my wife's meal came and she completely ate it before my steak arrived at the table. Steak quality was sub-par at best. Expected much better quality meat and tast from a $45 steak. Not to mention, the side was French fries. The room was loud. Sound deadening could be addressed. Could've had a better meal for less cost somewhere else.
