After a crazy week of work, I decided to play hookie on Friday and take a me day. I arrived on time and lucked up with 2 hr street parking on Madison. This spa is located in Old Town Alexandria so parking can be tricky. Anyhoo it's in the same building as One Life Fitness. Very easy to find. Not too many amenities to enjoy before being serviced and a very small restroom/changing area. Literally 1 toilet and 2 showers. The entire spa was really small. I felt bad like I was cheating on my regular masseuse. LOL but this was a gift! So I guess I can make an exception ;) My service was with Suzy. I opted for the 50 min hot stone massage and I did inform Suzy that I wanted a full body reset and gave her the green light to really apply pressure and dig deep into my massage. This type of massage doesn't take place on the typical massage table. The whole vibe of the room was a mix of a relaxing spa and HEAVEN! My therapist came into the room and the magic started!! While stretching my body, she found knots on my body that I didn't even know I had! She contorted my body in ways I didn't know it w could bend! She then got a walker and began walking on my back...my legs...my feet, my arms...my hands...you get it! The only place she didn't walk on was my head (they offer a separate massage especially for your head and I plan on checking it out as well)!! The head massage is called an "Indian head" massage . My body is usually riddled with constant pain (especially my hips and legs). Can you imagine my excitement when I got up from the floor and there was not a pain in my body to be found?!!! That said, I booked a salt room session and left feeling unsure if the halotherapy element was actually functioning. I've been to several salt caves with active halogenerators, and there are consistent effects I usually experience: I feel the salt in my chest, my nose may start running or I might cough a bit as it starts clearing things out, and I almost always feel a sense of deep calm settle in after about 5 to 10 minutes. None of that happened here. I heard the machine running, but there was no visible salt mist, no salty taste on my lips, and no sensation in my chest, nose, or on my skin. Within 5 to 10 minutes, I actually found myself hoping the session would be over -- which has never happened to me in a salt room before. I felt antsy and restless, not relaxed, and even debated getting up and leaving early. That's when I really started to question whether the halogenerator was working at all. I asked about it after the session, calmly and out of curiosity. The staff member responded defensively, pointing to a bit of salt buildup on the output pipe as proof that it was working. But residue like that doesn't necessarily mean it was operating during my session -- that could've built up weeks or months ago. I explained that I've done halotherapy before and that I didn't feel any of the usual physical or emotional effects. I wasn't trying to be difficult, just offering feedback in case the generator needed maintenance. Unfortunately, the response felt dismissive rather than open to my experience. This place has a lot going for it visually, and I'd love to return if I could trust the therapeutic element was being taken seriously. If you're coming for actual halotherapy, I'd recommend asking how the generator works, when it was last serviced, and what to expect. The environment is gorgeous, but the experience didn't feel aligned with how real salt therapy usually affects me -- and that's hard to overlook.
