I was very disappointed with my recent takeout order from Hot Off De Grill. While I did not dine in, the business has clean booth seating and the service was excellent. I ordered the jerk pork entrée with rice and peas, topped with oxtail gravy and cabbage. Unfortunately, the jerk pork container was layered in a way that felt misleading. The top portion had fresher, tender chopped pieces, but underneath were tough, burnt end pieces that were difficult to chew and enjoy. It seemed like the better pieces were placed on top while the bottom was filled with overcooked scraps. I understand it may have been later in the day and food could have been limited, but quality and consistency should still be maintained. I've had better experiences before, which made this one especially disappointing. read more

Let's talk about it. I dropped off my daughter 10 mins away for a birthday brunch with her teen friends. I was craving Jamaican food and my son was willing to try it out for the first time. I found this place on Google and I'm glad we chose this location. Staff was really nice place and place looked pretty clean. We had the oxtail meal, jerk, chicken, and jerk pork. Was it pricey? Maybe a little bit, this cost about $60 including two drinks. For the price, I would've appreciated more than 2 plantains in the oxtail meal. The oxtail could've been richer, didn't cook enough for the gravy to stick and they were majority small pieces of oxtail. I've made better oxtails at home, but I'm low key a chef. Let's go back to the gravy, delicious! I wish I had more on the rice and peas. The jerk pork was the star of the whole meal. Make sure to have them toss the pork in the jerk and get a side of jerk sauce! The chicken was too tender, had a bourbon chicken from the food court texture. I REALLY wanted to love this place! Jamaican food is scarce in these parts. We do have ONE Jamaican restaurant but if you go there after 5 pm, they are usually out of almost every item on the menu so I don't go often. Anywho, I have been seeing this little new spot in the BK plaza on Pines Blvd and decided I had to stop in. It's rare that you see a Jamaican menu with jerk shrimp and jerk fish. I'm a pescatarian so that's music to my ears. I walked into a very clean restaurant with pleasant people greeting me from behind the counter. I ordered Jerk Shrimp (w/rice & peas, plantain) and a side of the Cole slaw with mango. I paid $13.99 for the meal and another 3 bucks for the slaw. They told me the shrimp is made to order...impressive. I only waited about 6 minutes or so and I was on my way. I had errands but I was hungry so I took a minute to eat in the car. Upon first glance of my meal, honestly, it did not look appealing but that's not a deal breaker. Taste: the jerk shrimp was very light in color and didn't appear grilled or marinated at all. It had a wet look (which I'm not accustomed to when thinking "JERK". It looked more sautéed than grilled and it tasted...well...weird. It had a chemical taste which I realized after a few bites, was ginger. I love ginger but the ginger on this shrimp tasted like it came from a package and not like real ginger. I personally did not like the shrimp. The Rice: I grew up in south Florida but I've been to Jamaica many times and I've had rice so amazing you could eat it just like that with nothing on it. My rice tasted very dry and not very good at all. I didn't get the nice coconut flavor. Maybe it was there but I only tasted hints of what may have been coconut milk but I wasn't sure. The plantain: it just tasted either old or it was the frozen kind. Fresh sweet plantain is unmistakable. I know there are a lot of places that do frozen but in Miami (or south Florida) ...a tropical paradise, fresh is the only way to go. The Coleslaw: is still in my fridge 2 days later. I took 2 bites. It wasn't horrible BUT it tasted like store bought slaw dressing with mango chunks. That's all. I don't like leaving bad reviews and like I said, I wanted to love this place. I have always LOVED Jamaican food but again, it's hard to come by out here. Guess it's back to driving east to get good Jamaican food. This makes me sad. I had hope for this place. read more

Sad to say that Ruchi Indian Restaurant has permanently closed, but happy to say that a nice Caribbean restaurant has taken its place. The staff was super friendly and food was ready pretty quickly. Order the Hodg Jerk Chicken and the meat was pretty tasty! Came with mushy rice and red bean and steamed cabbage. While the jerk chicken tasted great, the rice and cabbage was ok. Felt like the meal just need a little more sauce. The Portland curry goat was pretty good. Prices are a bit higher than expanded, but hey that's what you call 'inflation'. After striking out finding jerk chicken at another Jamaican joint the other day, I got real excited to try this spot. Without consulting Yelp, we decided it was worth a shot. I was disappointed by the jerk, it did have a nice heat, but the sauce was oddly syrupy and sweet (thankfully after it mellowed for a day in the fridge it was better). We ordered a whole chopped jerk chicken and a small rice and peas. This must have been a deformed chicken, because it had at least 5 drumsticks and almost no breast! The rice and peas was great, but I really wanted some amazing jerk sauce to smother on my rice. My wife and I make two meals of it at home with our own sides. Pickup was to be ready in 30-40 minutes, though at a 40 minute arrival, it was awkwardly hard to get a clear indication of why I was waiting, though ten minutes later out it came from the kitchen and I was on my way. I've had their other dishes in months past, and have never been disappointed, only a bit perhaps in the hugely inflating prices. But again, amounts are large and a good value when that's considered. But both times coming I'm always charged a different price from what the menu says menu says 12.99 for a small curry goat was charged 38.50 today for two small meals. I don't drink soda, fruit juices, and many other unhealthy beverages - water is what I drink the most, tap luckily is very good here in Pembroke Pines. My meals here avg $10-$15 and have always asked and gotten a cup of tap water, with and without ice. On this visit, today Sat 9/17, I was told that they only serve bottled water, which is a LIE! Right in front of the cashier is a stack of white Styrofoam cups and to the left is a sink with faucet, in the back directly behind the cashier is the ice and other faucet, where my water has come from in the past and did today. I always wish that there was a good Jamaican Restaurant in Pembroke Pines and I thought this would be the based solely on on how clean it is. Today I ordered two large containers of chicken soup and I was shocked that it was served in what appears to be a one cup container or maybe a little bigger. The cost of the two soups $17.10 including a "BOWL FEE" of $2 each for the pleasure of taking home the food in a container and not your hand. This is the height of absurdity, does that mean I could have saved $4 by taking home my own container? I tried to order online, but there is a minimum order to avoid "take out fee".
