I had hit a weight loss plateau and wanted a guided class to try new workouts. In my third class, I was being helped by a new instructor and Alex (the manager) or so I thought. It was clear that during the whole class that I needed modifications and guidance. In my last station #18, it was a box jump, since I was not guided to not do it, I tried it and felt my knee pop. I was stuck on the box since I couldn't step down with just one functional leg and in excruciating pain. Alex ran over and helped me down and was evaluating my knee. He said to elevate it and ice it and that if I didn't feel better, I should get seen by a physician the next day. He also mentioned "oh, you had an injury already" which I was adamant I had never. Long story short, it's been 4 months later, full right lateral meniscus repair (not a shave down) and thousands in medical bills, I'm using a cane after 2 months preop because of the long recovery due to this injury and a big hit to my weight loss journey. The only response I got from this place was that since I signed a waiver, it was my own liability and any injury is on me. Why have 2 instructors if you don't need to be guided and coached on these dangerous exercises that are not meant for everyone? As a medical professional it is mind boggling that a franchise like this is so irresponsible and has such negligence with their clients after having to pay big bucks to attend these classes. I truly hope this doesn't happen to you because the physical, mental and emotional pain this has caused me all these months is truly devastating . They also are the first smaller place I've come across that has chains to clamp on a barbell. Dumbbells up to 150 I believe, though it may be 130. They also have a room for "spin" and zumba and the like. And some ellipticals. But who cares about that. I just love the family feel, the price, and that nobody looks at you funny when you grunt and sweat and really push yourself. Also, I've not yet found a day where it was really crowded. The review below (above?) me makes the last owner sound like a nightmare, but this place is allot different with the new owners, and they put allot of money into repairing everything before they reopened. At this point, my doctor put me on blood pressure medication. Instead of looking at the causes of why my numbers were high, the answer in the medical community is to prescribe drugs. At this point, intellectually I knew I had to lose weight, exercise smarter and, more importantly, eat better. I met Lorna at a women's health group that I hosted at my home and more recently when she was substituting at my Pilates class. I sincerely feel that I was meant to meet up with her again - the stars were aligned! We discussed my concerns, fears, hopes and commitment level and in only six weeks I had lost weight, but more importantly, I decreased my blood pressure so that I could eventually be taken off medication. I have never been so thrilled. I feel radically better in my health and well-being. Coupled with taking one-on-one Pilates instruction with Lorna and following her nutrition plan, I have changed the course of what could have been a disastrous road. This is not a miracle (well, it is kind of), but more of a "no brainer diet". This is life changing. If you open your heart and mind to eating right and really understanding the way your body either rejects or accepts food, it will liberate you. Do you really think opening up a bag of pretzels is better for you than eating celery or an apple? We all know the answer, but if you're not getting the proper nutrients from your food, you will never feel satisfied and that is why we overeat. The one thing that I am so grateful for is my overall well-being. I am not exaggerating the fact that four months ago I could barely walk upon waking. Getting out of bed and placing my feet down on the floor - the pain was at times unbearable. Since combining the Pilates, which is better than any strength-training class I have ever taken and bringing natural, organic anti-inflammatory foods and spices into my daily diet, I no longer suffer from the intense pain from heel spurs and shoulder pains. I whole-heartedly believe that I could not have accomplished this pain-free life without Lorna's help. Is this easy? No. But it works. I look younger. I feel younger. My skin glows. I have been training at AMP for a couple months now, twice a week with Heather (and one session…read morewith Mike when Heather was out sick). I love her, I love the place, and I love the rest of the crew. Let's start with the place - it's actually two storefronts, with a break in the wall between them. One side is filled with weight-lifting platforms and bar setups (I have yet to try the "barserker" bootcamp, but it seems like my childhood gymnastics skills might come in handy!). The other side is open with astroturf and all sorts of big movement equipment - a weight sled, gigantic long ropes, mini hurdles, etc. There's pretty much every kind of weighted item you could desire (dumbells, kettle bells, medicine balls, vibr bars), plus trickier stuff like resistance bands, TRX cables, and so on. Now let's talk about their philosophy. I specifically asked during my initial consultation whether they consider themselves to be like crossfit (I had a bad experience with crossfit...). They emphatically said no, that's not their style. AMP is focused on natural movement. It's not about bigger, faster, more more more. It's about doing it right, even if that only means you get 3 reps in. And trust me. Heather and I spent a good 15 minutes during a session trying to get just 3 good, real pushups out of me. BUT!!! The next session after that tedious session, I busted out more good pushups. Then this morning it was like I have done pushups all my life. Heather was thrilled, I couldn't believe it, the world is a new place. This is the whole point of AMP. Do it carefully, do it right, and you will see amazing progress at a reasonable pace. Finally, a quick note to those who are worried about current state of fitness, prior injuries, etc. From what I can tell, the clientele at AMP ranges from SUPER fit people to average Jills and Joes, to those who are working themselves back from injury. They are very careful to match you with a trainer who can fit your specific needs and they have a great stable of people to choose from who each have a slightly different background (straight-up trainer, physical therapist, champ weight-lifter, etc.) So don't worry about it - just go, get a consultation, ask questions, be honest in your needs, and you'll love it.
