I've always been curious about Hot Pot Chen as we drove by it, and I was so happy to have tried it out for dinner this past weekend. We came in around 6 p.m. and it wasn't too busy. The interior is very spacious (it doesn't look like it would be from the outside) and clean. There are many booths inside, and we just had to wait for a couple of parties in front of us before we were able to get a booth/table. I'm gluten free and the server was very understanding, letting me know my options and explaining which items could not be made gluten free. They have gluten free soy sauce, so they can make most of the stir fries gluten free, and the dishes with white sauce don't have soy sauce. I really wanted to try the hot pot, but our server explained that they already contain soy sauce that can't be substituted with gluten free soy sauce. I really appreciated her letting me know rather than just taking a guess me potentially getting sick from it. We ordered the Spicy Cucumber Salad and we were surprised when our server asked and offered to make it gluten free. I got the Vegetarian Paradise as my main dish and it was full of goodies! The sauce was delicious and well seasoned, not too salty. I asked for extra chili oil because I love spice. My boyfriend got spicy beef noodle soup, and he really enjoyed it, but it became a little too spicy for him toward the end. This update is overdue!! Since my first visit to Hot Pot Chen (when I feel like I didn't order the right dishes), I have been back several times and am a big fan now! Their specialty fish hot pot is totally the way to go. It's SO good, so customizable, and feels both like a special meal to share but approachable enough to order any day. When in the mood for noodle soup, their noodle soups hit the spot as well. Have tried several and like all that I've tried. Finally, I finally tried some of their more American Chinese items as well, and these were tasty too! I would heartily recommend checking out Hot Pot Chen. read more

But they only sell small one at $1.95 This time I got two hot and sour soup and since they require $10 min to charge on the website, got the chicken in garlic sauce. The soup was decent, lacked sourness though. Could have used more vinegar. While the chicken in garlic sauce was good, it was too oily. I was looking for a place for lunch, in Ann Arbor. Walking in, from the parking lot, you enter at the bar. There were a dozen other people, sitting around other tables and booths. It too a few minutes before the service, not too long, placed order, waitress stopped over with a glass of water, my order of pork fried rice and an egg roll arrived. I've been coming here since it was Gourmet Garden. Their lunch specials were an amazing deal. I'm partial to the kungpao chicken, veg lomein, sizzling hot pots, shrimp- stuffed eggplant, and all of the soups. The best dish, by far is the Ma la scallops. First off, I really enjoyed their Sesame Beef dish and had to order it again this time! It had just the right amount of breading and sweetness, and I enjoyed the broccoli, green and red peppers, and even sliced mushrooms that came with it. I personally thought the dish would have been even more enjoyable if there was more sauce so I would recommend asking for extra sauce if you're the type to want to smother it over your rice. I was not too impressed by the Vegetable Lo Mein, however, because the noodles were too broken apart in my opinion and lacked flavor when eaten by itself. Stopped in for week day lunch. Same people and cooks, just different name. The service is very friendly and helpful. The food, however, not so much. I ordered the lunch special of hunan (ma-la) scallops. Beautiful, large scallops, cooked PERFECTLY. I couldn't believe it. Very nice. Then one taste and I was done. The whole dish tasted like dish soap. It was the sauce. I don't know why. I thought it was that they washed the veggies and scallops in soapy water, and the woman brought me out an extra dish of sauce. I tried more sauce and realized it was the sauce. I am a fan of this place for the service, and quality of the ingredients. Perhaps it was me, and my taste buds, but something was surely off. I had to leave the rest of the dish. Invite your Chinese friend/partner when you eat here; it's totally decent if you know what to order. Then ask for the real Chinese menu. They serve a variety of cuisine, including Canton, but the dishes we tried (and the sauce) have a fairly distinct Sichuan flavor. I had the 米线 (rice noodles with veggies and some other goodies) and it was respectable after I added 醋、辣椒油 (vinegar and hot oil). There's an American menu that appears to be pretty standard, i.e. not actually Chinese food but I understand there's a market for it. Overall pleasant ambience, friendly and low key environment. We came to Ann Arbor after leaving this wonderful city in 2002 for great San Francisco area. Searching yelp for restaurants, I decided to skip "Hot Pot Chen" at first. Until our friend explained it is not hotpot but regular restaurant. We had a wonderful banquet like lunch. The soup (not listed on regular manual) is called 鼎邊銼 in Taiwan, and based on my best memory it is called 鍋邊糊。 This traditional dish is from south east china regional (閩南，福建）。The next is sweet and sour fish (石斑魚塊） with a decoration (not listed on the regular manual). The third one, may your wish come true (事事如意）is also not on the list. The chicken with basil and soy source (三杯雞） is another hit (this one is on the menial list). Fantastic food! One of the most authentic Chinese dishes I had in the state of Michigan. The appetizer duck neck just amazing. The grilled fish is so tender and juicy that melted immediately in the mouth. The spice and saltiness is just right to the point. I hate that I don't have a bigger stomach. Unbelievable!! This is the second time I've called in an order for pick up, (3 dinner items), and asked to pay with a card over the phone as I've done many times, and was told "I'm too busy". I said " you're too busy to take my payment??" And he said "Yes! I'm too busy!" I said "Are you kidding me? I can't give you my card number?", and he said NO! I was appalled at how rude he was. I will NEVER order from them again and will tell everyone I know about my experience. This is my first review I've ever left for a restaurant. But having this happen twice, I felt compelled to. I added the door dash app because I was getting tired of all of my home cooking. This was the first restaurant I ordered from in a while. The food was great! I loved the sweet and sour chicken sauce because it had grilled peppers and flavorful pineapples. My normal Chinese go-to (closed for COVID) has soggy white pineapple and a couple Luke warm onions served in with the chicken. The chicken was high quality breast mead T, and fried so it was really crispy on the outside, with tender chicken on the inside. The veggie egg rolls were yummy. Even the kids ate them, the duck sauce was not those little packets, but served in a little container and it tasted like fresh mangoes. Also got the garlic vegetables. Good variety with all my favorites including lots of broccoli and nice flavored sauce. Nice how they let you pick your spice level on the garlic sauce. All in all, definitely hit the spot for dinner for me and my three kids, with leftovers for lunch the next day. Felt like I should leave a review because I'm surprised to see such low rating overall.
